Background / History

Isolated Childhood and Toneri’s Recognition

Naruto grows up without parents or family companionship. His identity as the Fourth Hokage’s son is concealed, while the villagers direct their hatred of the Nine-Tails toward him. Childhood malnutrition leaves him unusually short 67 85.

During a lonely walk beside Konoha’s river, Naruto encounters Toneri and Quxian near Sasuke. Accustomed to rejection, he initially assumes the well-dressed strangers will ignore him. Toneri instead calls him by name and expresses a desire to become his rival, moving Naruto deeply 10 11.

Toneri places Naruto under genjutsu to contact the Nine-Tails and obtain its chakra. He refuses to release the beast immediately because he considers its power essential to Naruto’s growth. Before leaving, he encourages Naruto to believe in himself, bringing him to tears 11 12.

Team 7 and the Chunin Exams

Five years later, Naruto is a member of Team 7 alongside Sasuke and Sakura, under Kakashi’s instruction. He enthusiastically challenges Toneri when they reunite. Toneri directs him toward the Chunin Exams, but Naruto realizes only after their conversation that he has again forgotten to ask his first rival’s name 67.

Following Orochimaru’s attack in the Forest of Death, Toneri finds Naruto unconscious, Sasuke collapsed, and Sakura distressed. He moves the boys beneath a tree and leaves Quxian and Yakumo to watch them 72. Naruto later defeats Neji in the exam arena before the Konoha Crush begins 78.

Failure to Retrieve Sasuke

When Sasuke leaves Konoha with the Sound Four, Naruto immediately asks Fifth Hokage Jiraiya for permission to retrieve him. A squad drawn from Konoha’s young ninja sets out in pursuit 100.

Naruto confronts Sasuke over his willingness to abandon comrades who risked their lives for him. Their shared loneliness has led Naruto to regard Sasuke as a brother, but Sasuke insists that Naruto cannot understand the pain of losing a family he once had. Their ensuing battle leaves Naruto gravely wounded and unconscious 100 101.

After Kakashi brings him home and he leaves the hospital, Naruto cries alone at the academy swing. Toneri renews his determination by reminding him that he is Sasuke’s closest bond in Konoha. Naruto resolves not to abandon his friend to hatred 101.

Discovering Toneri’s Allegiance

Three years later, Naruto encounters Toneri wearing an Akatsuki cloak. Shocked that someone he considers a friend belongs to the organization, he rejects Toneri’s claim that their opposing positions were established from the beginning 110.

Naruto challenges him to prove that people can overcome fate, despite Kakashi and Guy warning him that he is outmatched. Toneri disperses his Shadow Clones with repulsive force and knocks him down just as easily. Naruto responds to the defeat by resolving to grow stronger 111.

Defending Konoha

When Sasuke returns to Konoha seeking Danzo, Naruto intervenes to protect Kakashi and their former classmates. He again appeals to Sasuke to abandon hatred, but Sasuke refuses to relinquish his revenge 151.

Naruto’s Sage Mode cannot bridge the gap against Sasuke’s Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan. Sasuke cuts through his Spiraling Shuriken and strikes him into the ground with Susanoo 152. Naruto returns in Kurama Mode after gaining the Nine-Tails’ cooperation, using a chakra tail to drive Sasuke back from Kakashi 153.

Tsunade holds Naruto off while Sasuke interrogates Kakashi. Naruto desperately tries to prevent Sasuke from taking their teacher’s Sharingan, recognizing its importance as a keepsake from Kakashi’s friend. Jiraiya intervenes before Sasuke can remove the eye 154.

As the confrontation expands, Naruto opposes Akatsuki’s plan to enforce peace through overwhelming force. He maintains that understanding and forgiveness offer the path to lasting peace and continues fighting to stop Sasuke and Tsunade 157.

Fourth Shinobi World War

Naruto reaches the battlefield in his Nine-Tails chakra form and challenges Toneri’s methods. He intends to defeat Toneri so that he can persuade him, but must first evade a blade-pressure attack from Susanoo 172.

Hagoromo later grants Naruto Six Paths and Yang Release power, awakening his Asura chakra. Madara supplies additional tailed-beast chakra before the final confrontation with Toneri’s allies 180 182.

Naruto proves difficult for Sasuke and Yakumo to subdue because of his Shadow Clones and varied tailed-beast chakra properties. After Quxian defeats Guy, Naruto uses Yang Release to preserve Guy’s life. He then faces Quxian, Yakumo, and Sasuke despite believing victory unlikely 188.

Seventh Hokage and Postwar Life

By five years after the war, Naruto has become the Seventh Hokage, having succeeded Tsunade two years earlier. He remains single and has stopped pursuing Sakura after accepting that she does not reciprocate his feelings 190.

His former enemies become part of his peaceful social circle. He continues sparring to maintain his strength and attends gatherings with Sasuke, Toneri, Hanabi, Kakashi, and Jiraiya. Toneri and Hanabi turn his teasing about children back on him by encouraging him and Sasuke to consider dating women from the Hyuga Clan 193 194.

Naruto is emotionally direct: happiness, anger, and grief are readily visible in his words and actions. His childhood mistreatment makes genuine goodwill especially precious to him. He develops an intuitive sensitivity to how others feel about him and quickly recognizes Toneri’s apparent friendliness 11 67.

His loyalty can become uncompromising. He regards Sasuke as a brother and refuses to stop pursuing him even after repeated rejection. He also understands the emotional importance of Kakashi’s Sharingan and pleads with Sasuke to spare it, distressed both for his teacher and for what the act would mean about his friend 100 101 154.

Naruto rejects the idea that birth, allegiance, or fate must determine personal relationships. He continues treating Toneri and Sasuke as people he hopes to reach rather than enemies beyond redemption.
