Background / History
Childhood and Sakumo’s Death
Kakashi’s mother died early, while his father’s missions and his own shinobi career frequently left Sōkyū alone at home. Despite being the younger child, Sōkyū cooked for himself and later prepared meals for Kakashi. After Sakumo’s death, Kakashi recognized how little attention he had paid to his brother’s needs and promised their parents that he would care for him 2 4.
His talent attracted competing interest from Konoha’s leadership. Danzō demanded custody of him, arguing that he could make Kakashi loyal to the village, but Hiruzen refused and stated that Kakashi was already on the Anbu evaluation list 4.
Joining Team Minato
Kakashi’s previous team placements repeatedly collapsed because of arguments with his teammates, leaving him without a squad after his promotion to Chunin. Hiruzen consequently arranged a new placement under Minato Namikaze. Kakashi initially rejected the idea, saying he was unsuited to working with others, but eventually joined Minato alongside Obito Uchiha and Rin Nohara 4 5 8.
The team undertook missions outside Konoha and later fought on the war fronts. At home, Kakashi’s frequent sparring and quarrels with Sōkyū gradually eased his gloom. He also supplied his brother with the Chakra Extraction and Three Body Technique scrolls 9 15 19 24.
The Hatake Brothers’ Different Paths
While Kakashi served at the front, Sōkyū became involved in village politics and planned to restore Sakumo’s reputation. Kakashi returned for his brother’s first day at the Academy, initially disguising the visit as a letter-delivery assignment 40.
During their private discussion, Sōkyū demonstrated his recovery from a Lightning Blade wound and Bakusaiga’s destructive power to prove that he could protect the household. Kakashi agreed not to expose or obstruct his plans, but asked him not to act against Konoha. He wanted justice for their father without harming the village 41 42.
Obito’s Sacrifice and Rin’s Apparent Death
On the Iwagakure front, Kakashi suffered a serious left-eye injury. When an enemy technique collapsed the cave sheltering the team, Obito pushed him clear and was crushed beneath a rock. Obito entrusted his left Sharingan to Kakashi and asked him to protect Rin 163.
Kakashi subsequently believed that both Obito and Sōkyū had died. He demanded to remain on the battlefield to avenge them, despite Minato’s insistence that he return to Konoha to recover. During this period, Konoha’s leadership downplayed Sōkyū’s achievements while promoting Kakashi’s reputation as the Copy Ninja 165 182.
After Kirigakure placed the Three-Tails inside Rin, Kakashi attempted to bring her home and refused her request to kill her. Rin deliberately stepped into his Lightning Blade to prevent the planned attack on Konoha. The apparent killing awakened Kakashi’s Mangekyō Sharingan and left him overwhelmed by guilt 182 183.
Unaware that Rin had survived through Sōkyū’s intervention, Kakashi withdrew emotionally. He asked Minato to help him join the Anbu because he could not bear to form or lead another team. Minato agreed to raise the request with the Hokage; the conversation does not itself confirm his admission 185 186.
Leaving Konoha and Reuniting in Rōran
Sōkyū’s defection forced Kakashi to confront the conflict between his family and his loyalty to Konoha. Ordered to watch the Hatake compound and report his brother’s return, he instead urged Sōkyū to escape when they met. Hiruzen witnessed his choice and expressed disappointment in him 209 210.
Sōkyū later secured Sakumo’s public vindication and moved the entire Hatake compound to Rōran. Kakashi accompanied him, effectively breaking with Konoha even though the village had not formally declared him a rogue ninja at that point 216.
In Rōran, Kakashi discovered that both Rin and Obito were alive. Learning the truth lifted the guilt surrounding their apparent deaths, while Sakumo’s exoneration relieved his remaining burden. He readily agreed to prepare grilled fish for his reunited friends 216.
Becoming the Fifth Raikage
Kakashi later accompanied Pakura and Kaguya Ōtsutsuki into Kumogakure to reach Sōkyū at the God Stone. He volunteered to cross the dangerous lightning himself, arguing that his lightning-nature chakra gave him a better chance of enduring it. His attempt to disrupt the storm with Thunderclap failed, and Kaguya’s intervention ultimately helped awaken Sōkyū 290 292 293 295.
Following Sōkyū’s victory over Kumogakure, the village’s senior officials submitted to Kakashi, and Sōkyū named him Fifth Raikage. Orochimaru and Kakuzu were assigned to assist him, while Mayuri Kurotsuchi was tasked with installing a copy of Rōran’s defense network 308.
Kakashi represented Kumogakure at the Five Kage Summit, surprising even Minato. Rasa challenged his legitimacy as a former Konoha shinobi, but Kakashi retained the seat and subsequently returned to oversee the village’s administration 308 309 312.
Appearance
- Hair: White or silver 41 308 318.
- Mask: Wears a black mask covering his mouth and nose 274.
- Eyes: His exposed eye is described as having a “dead-fish” look; his left eye later holds Obito’s transplanted Sharingan 16 165.
- Eye covering: A later description explicitly notes that he does not wear the slanted eye covering associated with his original-story counterpart 274.
- Raikage insignia: Appears at the summit wearing a Kumogakure forehead protector and carrying the Raikage hat 308.
Personality
Kakashi initially presents himself as cold, blunt, and difficult to approach. His friction with earlier teammates repeatedly prevented lasting squad assignments, while his exchanges with Obito often escalate into arguments or fights 4 5 16 149.
He expresses affection awkwardly and often conceals concern behind practical excuses. He claims to have returned home on routine business rather than admitting that he came for Sōkyū’s school enrollment. Beneath that reserve, he values his bonds deeply and is willing to risk his life for them 9 40 165.
His strong loyalty to Konoha conflicts with his desire to protect his family. Although he initially cannot imagine acting against the Hokage, he refuses to betray Sōkyū when faced with the actual choice. Repeated losses intensify his self-blame, but his reunion with Rin and Obito allows him to become noticeably more relaxed 42 186 210 216.
As Raikage, he enjoys his new authority while taking its responsibilities seriously. His trust in Sōkyū does not make him politically complacent: he recognizes that Rōran’s technological support also creates dependence and rejects the assumption that family ties exempt Kumogakure from consequences 309 318 337.
Abilities & Skills
White Fang Swordsmanship
Kakashi uses the Hatake family’s sword style in close combat 24 41.
- Combines sword sequences with the Body Flicker Technique to reposition around an opponent.
- Practices with wooden swords during sparring with Sōkyū.
- Uses defensive lightning to repel Sōkyū’s Wind Scar during a later match 41.
Lightning Release
Lightning Release is his most prominently demonstrated elemental specialty; Sōkyū also identifies water and earth as natures Kakashi is skilled in 19.
- Chidori: Concentrates lightning chakra in his hand for a high-speed piercing thrust. Developed after he failed to incorporate Lightning Release into the Rasengan 24.
- Lightning Blade: A piercing attack powerful enough to pass through Sōkyū’s body. Early demonstrations show that Kakashi cannot reliably halt or redirect the charge 41 183.
- Thunderclap: Projects blue lightning in an attempt to draw away the God Stone’s storm. The much stronger lightning neutralizes it almost immediately 293.
- Limitations: Before obtaining the Sharingan, his unfinished Chidori has accuracy and control problems. Even later, exhaustion and momentum prevent him from avoiding Rin when she steps into his attack 24 183.
Sharingan
Kakashi receives Obito’s left Sharingan after the cave collapse and later awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan 163 165 183.
- The transplanted eye initially displays two tomoe 165.
- His subsequent wartime reputation is that of the Copy Ninja 182.
- The supplied events establish his Mangekyō awakening, but do not demonstrate a named Mangekyō ability 183.
Movement and Basic Ninjutsu
- Body Flicker Technique: Used for surprise approaches, pursuit, and sword combinations 19 24 41.
- Substitution Technique: Replaces himself with a log to evade Wind Scar 24.
- Chakra-enhanced movement: Keeps pace with Sōkyū’s Lightning Soru over a race to the front by increasing his chakra output, though he arrives panting 151.
- Situational awareness: Can detect the numerous watchers surrounding the Hatake compound once he regains his composure 210.
- Thousand Years of Death: Attempts to copy Sōkyū’s prank technique; striking Iron Body instead injures his hands 25.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- White Fang: His personal blade, carried behind his back; Kakashi judges Bakusaiga to be considerably more powerful 24 41.
- Wooden swords: Used for training and sibling sparring 18 24 41.
- Kunai: Drawn while defending Rin from Kirigakure pursuers 183.
- Kumogakure forehead protector and Raikage hat: Worn upon taking his place at the Five Kage Summit 308.
Relationships
- Sōkyū Hatake — Younger brother and eventual political backer. Their relationship combines teasing, sparring, and mutual protectiveness; Kakashi ultimately chooses his brother’s safety over reporting him to Konoha 4 24 210 308.
- Hatake Sakumo — Father. His suicide and damaged reputation weigh heavily on Kakashi until Sōkyū clears his name. Sakumo later appears alongside Kakashi, and both offer to shield Sōkyū from Hagoromo 216 274.
- Minato Namikaze — Teacher and emotional mentor. Brings Kakashi into his team, supports him after his losses, and agrees to discuss his Anbu request with the Hokage 5 8 186.
- Obito Uchiha — Teammate, rival, and close friend. Their constant quarrels coexist with Obito’s repeated efforts to save Kakashi, culminating in the gift of his Sharingan 40 149 163.
- Rin Nohara — Teammate whose apparent death becomes a major source of guilt. Sōkyū repeatedly teases Kakashi about her, but Kakashi denies that they are romantically involved 8 41 186 216.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former Hokage and authority figure. Kakashi initially remains deeply loyal to him, but their relationship fractures when he protects Sōkyū 42 210.
- Pakura — Fellow participant in the mission to reach Sōkyū at the God Stone. Kakashi argues against letting her cross the lightning without protection 292.
- Orochimaru and Kakuzu — Assigned by Sōkyū to help him administer Kumogakure 308.
Governance of Kumogakure
| Area | Policy or Development |
|---|---|
| Administrative transition | Returns from the summit to take over Kumogakure’s management 312. |
| Military modernization | Rōran’s support provides new Lightning Release Armor and improved communications equipment 318. |
| Infrastructure dependence | Nearly all village defense systems and energy networks become connected to Rōran’s central control system. Kakashi recognizes this as both protection and a means of keeping Kumogakure tied to Rōran 318. |
| Relations with Rōran | Orders continued cooperation and rejects claims that being Sōkyū’s brother will automatically shield the village 337. |
| Relations with Iwagakure | Sends Ōnoki a private message of sympathy and support after Iwagakure’s reconstruction agreement 337. |
