Background / History
Alliance with Sōkyū Hatake
Orochimaru respected Hatake Sakumo as a senior who had saved his life several times during the Second Shinobi World War. At Sakumo’s memorial, he became interested in the unusual remarks of Sakumo’s younger son, Sōkyū, and subsequently approached him through a small snake 5 6.
Their private discussion connected immortality to the survival of souls, cloned replacement bodies, and soul-transfer techniques. Orochimaru immediately questioned whether cloning would preserve his own consciousness or merely produce successive independent copies. Sōkyū proposed combining Living Corpse Reincarnation with the Spirit Transformation Technique to address the problem 6 7.
Sōkyū also warned that Danzo could eventually expose their human experimentation and discard Orochimaru. Citing his debt to Sakumo, Orochimaru accepted an alliance and agreed to preserve evidence of Danzo’s involvement. He then accepted Sōkyū as his apprentice, promising protection from Root in exchange for Sōkyū’s future assistance 7 8.
Command of the Sunagakure Front
When war broke out, Orochimaru received responsibility for the Sunagakure front. Rather than abandon his experiments, he packed up his laboratory to relocate it alongside his military assignment 26.
An attempted ambush of the Third Kazekage’s puppet army became a trap when the apparent enemy force proved to be puppets. The Kazekage intended to delay Orochimaru inside an Electromagnetic Puppet Formation while attacking Konoha’s base. Sōkyū intervened, and afterward revealed that the Orochimaru inside the formation had not been his real body 63 64 67.
Orochimaru kept Sōkyū close when confronting Chiyo and arranged for Tsunade to support the eastern battlefield. He also placed the medical division under Tsunade’s authority. When a suspected betrayal threatened the command, he submitted to Sōkyū’s lie detector himself before directing the remaining officers to be tested 70 85 86 87.
He and Sōkyū later exploited news of missing Iwagakure troops to pressure Sunagakure into negotiations. Orochimaru secured a half-month truce, a ten-kilometer withdrawal, and compensation. His force ultimately returned to Konoha after the Sunagakure conflict ended, receiving a public welcome for the first victory of the Third Shinobi World War 92 98 144 145.
Yamato’s Experiment
Following Sōkyū’s recommendation, Orochimaru recruited the boy later named Yamato as a candidate for Hashirama-cell implantation. He obtained the boy’s agreement by killing the Sand Shinobi responsible for his parents’ deaths, then arranged a death certificate for his original identity 127 128.
After a year and a half, the implanted cells stopped showing signs of rejection. Yamato recovered rapidly and successfully produced Wood Release. Orochimaru retained him as a concealed subordinate and assistant, withholding his identity even from Tsunade 127 128 129 131 144.
Defying Danzo and Seeking the Hokage Position
After Anko told him what had happened to Sōkyū on the Iwagakure front, Orochimaru demanded an explanation for Konoha’s failure to respond. Danzo threatened to treat an unauthorized departure as betrayal, but Orochimaru insisted on going, recalling his earlier regret over Senju Nawaki’s death. Tsunade accompanied him 166 167.
Together with Minato Namikaze and other Konoha fighters, they attacked Iwagakure’s field headquarters. Orochimaru killed Hōki, and the assault forced an enemy withdrawal. After Iwagakure’s eventual defeat, Orochimaru was effectively placed under house arrest in Konoha, where he continued laboratory work 168 182.
In Konoha Year 47, he entered the Fourth Hokage election despite previously preferring research to political office. Believing Sōkyū dead, he privately admitted that he wanted to fulfill his disciple’s wish and resolve the injustice surrounding Sakumo 188.
Danzo’s faction publicly exposed Orochimaru’s forbidden research during the election. Prepared for this tactic, Orochimaru played a Tone Dial recording of Danzo ordering experiments involving Hashirama’s cells, the Sharingan, and the Byakugan. The confrontation also deepened his disillusionment with Hiruzen Sarutobi 189 190 200.
Rōran and Ōtsutsuki Research
Sōkyū introduced Orochimaru to Mayuri Kurotsuchi, Rōran’s chief scientist. Their initial interest in one another quickly became an enthusiastic research partnership, with Orochimaru impressed by Mayuri’s laboratory and Mayuri intrigued by Impure World Reincarnation 220 221.
Their later work centered on captive Ōtsutsuki. After half a year studying Momoshiki, they decoded a star chart, routes, and communication signals from his blood. Orochimaru identified a heavily encrypted region as a possible important hub. Sōkyū ordered the findings secured and directed further intelligence extraction and the Deep Space Watch Project 338 339.
Urashiki’s capture supplied a second specimen and the remains of his Fish Basket. Orochimaru and Mayuri mapped his energy pathways, investigated chakra theft and storage, and obtained activation data by offering false hope of relaxed restraints 348 349 350.
When Isshiki infiltrated the laboratory, the scientists used prepared containment systems and layered electromagnetic defenses against him. Isshiki nevertheless exploited stored weapons and Kāma resonance, destroyed a power core, and reduced the laboratory’s defenses by forty percent 361 362 363 364.
Appearance
Orochimaru has a pale face, yellow-to-golden serpentine eyes, and a frequently flicking forked tongue 5 6 45 348.
- Eyes: His snake-like gaze often conceals his thoughts or becomes visibly intense when research interests him 6 45.
- Voice: Described as hoarse and possessing a snakelike slickness 334.
- Research clothing: Wears goggles and gloves while handling samples, and later appears in a simple research coat 188 334.
Personality
Immortality is Orochimaru’s foremost early research priority. He absorbs unfamiliar scientific ideas quickly but does not accept them uncritically: his first objection to cloning concerns the continuity of personal identity. His fascination with Sōkyū’s unusual body also leads to repeated requests for blood or opportunities to study him 7 49 50.
His cold demeanor coexists with strong personal loyalties. He explicitly says that he repays kindness, protects Sakumo’s son, and takes responsibility for Anko after her father dies saving him. Sōkyū’s presumed death eventually makes fulfilling his disciple’s wishes more urgent to him than experimentation 7 49 188.
That loyalty does not make him humane toward enemies. Although he tells Sōkyū that subjects in his laboratory sign consent forms, his later Ōtsutsuki research involves painful invasive procedures, restraint, and calculated deception. He treats Urashiki’s hope of release as a means of obtaining experimental cooperation 127 350.
Abilities & Skills
Ninjutsu Expertise
Orochimaru is described as having mastered the most ninjutsu among the Sannin 149.
- Shadow Clones: Conducts meetings or performs duties through clones while his real body remains occupied with experiments 14 26 78.
- Water Clone: Uses a clone to misdirect Sōkyū before attacking from behind 47.
- Limit: Despite his broad repertoire, he has not learned the Flying Thunder God Technique 149.
Snake Techniques
Orochimaru employs snakes for communication, protection, movement, and combat 6 14 45 46.
- Protective messenger: Leaves a small white snake with Sōkyū; crushing it signals Orochimaru to come 14.
- Snake-mediated appearances: Appears through a small snake’s mouth and is also shown leaving in the form of a white snake 45 287.
- Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Summons numerous large snakes for intimidation, restraint, capture, and repeated attacks; uses it against Sōkyū’s Wind Scar 46.
- Formation interference: Sends white snakes to work on the Electromagnetic Puppet Formation 64.
Eight Branches Technique
An S-rank forbidden technique described as Orochimaru’s largest and strongest ninjutsu at its introduction 47.
- Transforms him into a white snake with eight heads and eight tails.
- Used against Sōkyū’s lightning-based Thunder God Descent: God’s Relic during their Valley of the End duel 47.
Soru
A high-speed movement method learned from Sōkyū that does not require chakra 14.
- Generates explosive movement by stamping the ground dozens of times within approximately 0.36 seconds.
- Initially learns the force-generation method without full proficiency.
- Later outpaces Sōkyū’s use of the same technique 14 46.
Poison and Genjutsu
Orochimaru incorporates poison into combat and develops a visual technique to help Tsunade function despite her hemophobia 47 167.
- Four Black Snakes Formation: Uses poison during the formation-based portion of his duel with Sōkyū 47.
- Mosaic Technique: Makes blood appear as an indistinct blur to Tsunade, potentially preventing a hemophobic reaction.
- Limit: The demonstration establishes a possible workaround, not a confirmed cure 167.
Biological Research and Containment Engineering
His work spans cloned bodies, soul transfer, transplanted cells, Ōtsutsuki biology, and specialized laboratory defenses 7 127 338 362.
- Hashirama-cell research: Achieves stable implantation in Yamato, followed by demonstrated Wood Release 127 129.
- Energy-circuit mapping: Designs a holographic display system using probes implanted at Urashiki’s chakra nodes 350.
- Reverse engineering: Studies the Fish Basket’s spatial folding and chakra-storage mechanisms with Mayuri 348 350.
- Electromagnetic Imprison Array: Activates spatial interference, energy absorption and dispersal, and physical-impact reflection within the laboratory 362.
- Limits: Isshiki exploits interactions between his abilities to damage the defenses; the spatial lockdown also cannot restrain Sōkyū’s later transportation ability 363 364 368.
