Power Progression
Rasa’s documented changes concern his posthumous conversion and the puppet’s development, rather than a living rank advancement.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Living Kage-level shinobi | 63 138 | Already renowned as the “strongest Kazekage,” with Magnet Release suited to offense, defense, and gold extraction. |
| Completed human puppet | 139 | Sasori installed Rasa’s removed heart into the prepared puppet, enabling it to wield his Iron Sand techniques. Its initial integration was insufficient to reproduce his full living strength. |
| Improved puppet compatibility | 234 | Further modifications brought the puppet’s compatibility to a high level; it continued using Iron Sand Drizzle. |
Appearance
- Hair: Blue 63.
- Eyes: Yellow 63.
- Clothing: A white Kazekage robe worn over blue ninja clothing 63.
- Human puppet: Retained his recognizable appearance; its eyes became more lifelike after Sasori installed his heart 137 139.
Personality
Rasa combined careful preparation with a strong instinct for self-preservation. He ordered puppet scouts ahead while keeping their operators back, then reversed an attempted ambush through an elaborate deception. When threatened by Sōkyū Hatake’s lightning attack, however, he ordered Ebizo to shield him and escaped with the remaining troops 63 64 66.
He was deeply protective of his authority. Although he disliked Chiyo, her position on the Council of Elders obliged him to hear her advice. He regarded the prospective successors Pakura and the younger Rasa as threats, withholding their deployment and accusing the latter of seeking his position. Council approval of their flank assignments left him furious at his inability to intervene 77 90 93.
His treatment of Ebizo also showed a tension between expediency and obligation. He publicly claimed Ebizo had volunteered to stay behind, yet later privately acknowledged that he owed him and suppressed his anger when Chiyo bypassed him during ransom discussions 66 78.
Abilities & Skills
Magnet Release
Rasa emitted magnetic fields and controlled Iron Sand for combat, reconnaissance, and economic purposes 63 64.
- Offense and defense: Used Iron Sand to attack enemies and reinforced Ebizo’s puppet defenses during his retreat 63 66.
- Reconnaissance: Orochimaru considered his magnetic detection superior to ordinary scouting methods and ordered his troops to remain one li away 64.
- Gold extraction: Located gold dust in the desert to supplement Sunagakure’s finances 63 86.
- Tracking evidence: Gold dust found near his abduction site and along the subsequent route helped Pakura and Sōkyū follow his trail. Both suspected he had left it deliberately 134 135 136.
Iron Sand Techniques
| Technique | Applications and limits |
|---|---|
| Iron Sand Shower / Iron Sand Drizzle | Forms a mass of iron sand into numerous high-speed needles. Its broad coverage and sustained attack make it difficult to evade, but Pikachu’s Thunderbolt blocked Rasa’s living use of it 65. |
| Iron Sand World Method | Creates a large airborne barrier covered in long spikes, combining piercing attacks with extensive area restriction. The Third Kazekage can move freely within it; his newly completed puppet used it to force Sōkyū back only temporarily 139. |
Electromagnetic Puppet Formation
A coordinated trap developed with Sunagakure’s strategists over six months on the battlefield 64.
- Used puppets disguised as people while the actual shinobi disguised themselves as puppets and passed through Konoha’s blockade 64.
- Repositioned the decoys into a formation surrounding Orochimaru and his troops 64.
- Was intended to delay Konoha’s defenders while Rasa attacked their base; a Konoha subordinate estimated dismantling it would take at least three hours 64.
- Ultimately failed to secure its intended advantage: Orochimaru’s real body had avoided the trap, and Ebizo was captured after Sōkyū intervened 67.
Transformation Technique
- Disguised himself as Orochimaru to approach Konoha’s base after activating the puppet trap 64.
Human Puppet Form
Sasori completed the puppet by installing Rasa’s heart, preserving access to his Magnet Release techniques 138 139.
- Retained techniques: Demonstrated Iron Sand Shower and Iron Sand World Method 139.
- Durability: Withstood repeated attacks from Pakura despite being driven back 140.
- Initial limitation: Could not reproduce Rasa’s full living power immediately after completion and required further refinement 139 140.
- Control: Operated under Sasori rather than acting as the living Kazekage 139.
History
Accession and Wartime Finances
After the Second Kazekage’s death, Fujiwara Terushita served as acting Kazekage because Rasa was not yet ready to take office. Terushita’s unwillingness to hold the position permanently preceded Rasa’s eventual tenure as the Third 124.
Sunagakure’s limited finances and grain reserves made a prolonged war difficult. Repeated funding cuts from the Land of Wind’s daimyo forced Rasa to extract gold to supplement village revenue. His presence at the front interrupted that work, increasing the pressure to win quickly 77 86.
Campaign Against Konoha
Rasa led a puppet force into a valley and turned Orochimaru’s planned ambush into the Electromagnetic Puppet Formation. After disguising himself as Orochimaru, he attempted to bypass the trapped force and strike Konoha’s base 63 64.
Sōkyū Hatake’s intervention disrupted the operation. Rasa ordered Ebizo to absorb the boy’s lightning attack, reinforced his defenses, and escaped. Upon learning that Sōkyū was six years old and the son of Hatake Sakumo, he issued a kill-on-sight order, reasoning that the boy’s powerful ninjutsu required preparation time 65 66.
Sōkyū later played a Tone Dial recording of the order to sacrifice Ebizo. Chiyo recognized the voices but publicly dismissed the recording as an enemy scheme and rallied Sunagakure to attack 71.
Command Disputes and Truce
Mounting casualties prompted Chiyo to demand reinforcements from Pakura and the younger Rasa, the leading candidates for Fourth Kazekage. The Third reluctantly summoned them, then kept them away from the main fighting under the stated purpose of ambushing Tsunade 77 90.
His suspicions worsened as Konoha spread rumors about the candidates’ inactivity. He also grew frustrated when Nara Rokuten, his planted source within Konoha, stopped appearing on the battlefield. Pakura and the younger Rasa eventually secured flank assignments with the senior leadership’s approval, overriding his objections 90 91 92 93.
When intelligence suggested that Ōnoki and Iwagakure’s missing forces might attack Sunagakure, Rasa recalled the flank forces. He subsequently accepted a half-month truce with Konoha and agreed to withdraw ten kilometers 93 97 98.
Iwagakure War and the Raid on His Office
Rasa and Bunpuku defended Sunagakure against Iwagakure forces led by Roshi. While they were occupied, Sōkyū infiltrated Rasa’s office, stole documents and personal effects, and stripped the gold from his hidden room 108 117 118 124.
The raid also struck the village’s ninjutsu repository and grain stores. A report placed casualties near four hundred. On learning that his secret room—including its walls—and years of savings had been taken, Rasa roared Sōkyū’s name and spat blood 124.
Abduction and Death
After Sunagakure and Iwagakure concluded a two-year Non-Aggression Pact, Rasa disappeared while traveling alone within the Land of Wind. Information from a Bounty Station placed him in Higuma Town before he headed toward Executioner’s Cliff; investigators found battle traces and gold dust roughly ten kilometers south of the cliff 132 134.
Pakura and Sōkyū followed the gold-dust trail to Sasori. Rasa was still alive on an operating table, but most of his organs had been removed. He begged to be killed while Sasori prepared to extract his heart 135 136 137 138.
During Sōkyū and Pikachu’s attack, Sasori forcibly removed the heart and protected it with his own body. Rasa’s death completed Sōkyū’s mission requirement to kill a Kage-level fighter. Sasori then installed the heart in the puppet and used it against Sōkyū and Pakura 139.
Aftermath
News of Rasa’s death spread in Year 45 of Konoha. Sunagakure charged Sasori with abducting and killing its Kazekage and classified him as an S-rank missing-nin with a twenty-million-yen bounty 142.
Pakura sealed Rasa’s hollowed-out corpse, but Sōkyū secretly obtained flesh, blood, and the brain for Orochimaru’s research. The younger Rasa succeeded him as Fourth Kazekage and concluded a ceasefire with Konoha involving war reparations and Ebizo’s ransom 139 143 144.
Possessions
- Hidden office compartments — Held village intelligence, Sunagakure documents, and personal effects; looted by Sōkyū 117.
- Secret gold room — Contained a gold nightstand, a three-meter gold bed, gold decorations, and gold beneath the wall surfaces, concealed by outer coverings 117 118.
- Erotic outfit collection — Stored in his largest hidden room 117.
- Accumulated savings — Lost in Sōkyū’s raid, provoking his furious reaction 124.
Relationships
- Ebizo — Subordinate and puppet-force captain. Rasa sacrificed his safety to escape Sōkyū’s attack, leading to Ebizo’s capture by Konoha 63 66 67.
- Chiyo — Senior elder and wartime ally whose influence constrained his authority. Their relationship deteriorated over Ebizo’s capture and the exposure of Rasa’s order 71 77 78.
- Orochimaru — Opposing commander; the target of his puppet trap and his counterpart in the temporary truce negotiations 64 98.
- Sōkyū Hatake — Enemy who disrupted his plans, exposed his abandonment of Ebizo, stole his savings, and deliberately sought his death to complete a mission 66 71 124 139.
- Pakura — Potential successor whom he sidelined. She later searched for him and attempted to stop Sasori from completing his puppet 90 135 138 139.
- Rasa, the Fourth Kazekage — Younger successor candidate whom the Third suspected of seeking to replace him; ultimately inherited his office 90 143 144.
- Bunpuku — Allied defender who fought alongside him against Roshi’s invasion 108 124.
- Fujiwara Terushita — Former acting Kazekage who held office before Rasa was ready to succeed the Second 124.
- Sasori — Abductor and killer who used his heart to complete a human puppet retaining his abilities 137 138 139.
