Background / History

Overseeing Planetary Space

Jia Nan guards the Planetary Space entrance during its opening period. Although the space contains no Demon Beasts that could invade the outside world, the Nine Provinces Alliance assigns Grandmasters to protect it because of its importance as an inheritance site. He welcomes the arriving students and shatters the black screen concealing its sky-blue entrance 12.

Before admitting them, he establishes a five-hour limit for obtaining an inheritance, explains that Detection Chips will record their actions, and prohibits attacks between students. He also uses genjutsu to expose students whose chakra affinity has been artificially raised. Qi Yuan’s unusually quick escape from the illusion catches his attention 13.

Investigating Qi Yuan’s Inheritance

Jia Nan initially regards Qi Yuan’s choice of the Sharingan as wasted potential. Reviewing his Detection Chip footage, however, reveals that Qi Yuan cleared the Inheritance Tower’s first six floors faster than Jia Nan himself had done. The recording also exposes Zhou Hua’s and Lin Tao’s attacks on him 21 22.

His disappointment turns to shock when he sees Qi Yuan obtain all fifteen King’s Legacies on the seventh layer and enter the eighth. After confirming the event through Xu Ying’s recording, Jia Nan puts Xiao Zhang to sleep and reports directly to Yu Wang 22.

Yu Wang explains that three previous entrants to the eighth layer died shortly after returning, but identifies Qi Yuan as a possible exception because his body remains healthy. Jia Nan offers to examine Qi Yuan’s memories; Yu Wang declines and orders him to keep the matter quiet 23.

Lin Tao’s Hearing

Jia Nan summons Lin Tao and Qi Yuan to address the ambush. He rejects attempts by Lin Tao and Lin Qiang to reverse the blame, then intervenes when Liu Tianjun threatens Qi Yuan. He permits Qi Yuan’s proposed life-or-death rematch while warning the opposing side to reconsider; Qi Yuan kills Lin Tao almost immediately 23 25.

When the confrontation escalates, Jia Nan defeats Liu Tianjun through genjutsu and prevents further retaliation. He warns Qi Yuan that Liu Tianjun may seek revenge and orders those present not to publicize the incident, concerned about the criticism a novice ninja would attract 26.

Learning that Qi Yuan’s expulsion prevents him from entering the Martial Trial, Jia Nan offers to contact Mayor Sima Nan to reverse it. When Qi Yuan refuses to return to the school, Jia Nan instead grants him special permission to participate without school enrollment 26 27.

The Martial Trial

Jia Nan announces that the Martial Trial will take place in a newly discovered D-Rank Secret Realm, with results determined by the Chakra Crystals students collect. He makes participation voluntary but emphasizes that fighting Demon Beasts is a ninja’s responsibility 30.

The decision follows the catastrophic losses in Qing Province, which have increased the Alliance’s urgency to prepare young ninjas. Jia Nan gives students repeated opportunities to withdraw, warns that later withdrawal will be treated as desertion, and states that no Guardians will accompany them inside 31.

After Qi Yuan breaks the Four Violet Flames Formation and saves the endangered participants, Jia Nan arrives and recognizes his strength as comparable to an ordinary Grandmaster. Worried that Qi Yuan’s abilities will attract dangerous attention, he ends the trial and orders a realm-wide search for survivors, medical assistance, and the tallying of crystals 35 36.

Protecting Qi Yuan

After the trial, Jia Nan explains the human body’s difficulty supporting the Sharingan, Yunlong’s deteriorating condition, and the existence of Foreign Races capable of wielding the Mangekyō Sharingan. He also answers Qi Yuan’s questions about Tailed Beasts and Jinchūriki, while acknowledging the limits of his knowledge 36 37.

He warns that Yang Tianbao has become the Wind King’s successor and promises to seek Yu Wang’s intervention if the Yang Family targets Qi Yuan. Later, at Qi Yuan’s request, he contacts Sima Nan to arrange Yan Gang’s appointment as principal of Shangcheng No. 1 Middle School 37 40.

When informed that Liu Tianjun participated in an assassination attempt against Qi Yuan, Jia Nan orders Sima Nan to suppress the news and gather evidence that the Liu Family cannot dispute. He subsequently rushes to Shangcheng City after Yu Wang’s abrupt departure, calls for medical help upon seeing Qi Yuan exhausted, and witnesses Yu Wang’s offer to take him as a disciple. Yu Wang later instructs Jia Nan to publicize Qi Yuan’s new status 45 49 50.

Appearance

  • Age and features: An elderly man with a goatee, often seen smiling or stroking his beard 12 13.
  • Demeanor: Usually appears kindly and can look like an ordinary old man when approaching students 12 21.
  • Chakra presence: When released, his aura is vast and suffocating enough to make students tremble and put Qi Yuan on edge 12.

Personality

Jia Nan combines an approachable manner with a strong concern for humanity’s future. He welcomes students as humanity’s prodigies and regards exceptional inheritances as gains for Yu Province, not merely for their recipients’ families 12 21.

He strongly condemns infighting that undermines humanity’s survival. Lin Tao’s ambush angers him because tolerating such behavior would encourage others to disregard the law. He also refuses to let Liu Tianjun use clan influence to intimidate Qi Yuan 22 25.

His protection is pragmatic rather than entirely hands-off. He controls sensitive information, shields Qi Yuan from publicity, and considers examining his memories before Yu Wang rejects the proposal. During the Martial Trial briefing, Qi Yuan suspects mental influence in his rousing speech, though Jia Nan still allows students to withdraw 23 26 31 36.

Abilities & Skills

Grandmaster-Level Combat Ability

Jia Nan is a Level Five Grandmaster ranked 72nd in the Nine Provinces. The rankings reflect Demon Beast combat records rather than combat strength alone; inclusion requires killing at least ten Demon Beasts of the same realm 21 22.

  • His chakra suppresses Liu Tianjun’s killing intent during their confrontation 25.
  • Liu Tianjun recognizes that Jia Nan is considerably stronger than him 25.
  • Even after winning the Martial Trial, Qi Yuan remains unsure whether he could defeat Jia Nan at full strength 36.

Genjutsu

Jia Nan specializes in genjutsu and can affect both inexperienced students and Grandmaster-level opponents 13 23 26.

  • Screening: Uses a voice-based illusion to draw out students who artificially raised their chakra affinity 13.
  • Sleep induction: Leaves Xiao Zhang muddled and then sends him into a deep sleep after confirming that the eighth-layer recording remains confidential 22.
  • Combat suppression: Traps Liu Tianjun in a Genjutsu Space, injuring him and forcing him to concede. Liu Tianjun understands that Jia Nan deliberately spared his life 26.
  • Proposed memory examination: Offers to inspect Qi Yuan’s memories, but does not proceed because Yu Wang refuses 23.
  • Limits: Qi Yuan breaks free of his initial screening illusion quickly enough to surprise him. Jia Nan is not a sensory ninja and cannot independently assess Qi Yuan’s internal condition as Yu Wang does 13 23.

Command and Influence

  • Commands Guardian personnel, including Cao Yang’s squad, sensor ninjas, and medical teams 23 36.
  • Has authority to contact Yu Wang directly 22.
  • Can grant exceptional permission to enter the Martial Trial without school enrollment 27.
  • Has sufficient influence with Sima Nan to arrange Yan Gang’s appointment as a school principal through a direct call 40.

Relationships

  • Qi Yuan — A promising junior whom Jia Nan initially underestimates because of the Sharingan. He becomes his protector, facilitates his Martial Trial participation, and helps shield him from political and public pressure 21 26 27 45.
  • Yu Wang — His superior and political backer. Jia Nan reports sensitive discoveries directly to him and follows his instructions concerning Qi Yuan 22 23 26 50.
  • Liu Tianjun — A fellow Grandmaster whose intimidation and interference Jia Nan opposes. Their confrontation ends with Liu Tianjun defeated by his genjutsu 25 26.
  • Cao Yang — A subordinate entrusted with arrests, reports, and trial-related orders 23 35 36.
  • Sima Nan — A friendly official contact in Shangcheng City who values Jia Nan’s favor and carries out his instructions 26 40 45.
  • Yan Gang — Qi Yuan’s guardian figure, whom Jia Nan assists by securing his appointment as principal of Shangcheng No. 1 Middle School 40.
  • Xiao Zhang — The subordinate who brings him Qi Yuan’s Detection Chip footage and corroborates the eighth-layer entry with Xu Ying’s recording 21 22.
