Holders and Succession

Holder / Candidate Position Details
Old Yu Wang Previous holder Father of Gu Huan. After his death, Gu Huan used Impure World Reincarnation to summon him in an attempt to overthrow Gu Cheng; his spiritual body dissipated after a few days 41 99.
Gu Cheng Current holder Took office decades before Qi Yuan’s emergence and greatly raised Yu Province’s standing within the alliance 49 50.
Qi Yuan Designated successor Accepted Gu Cheng as his teacher and agreed to inherit responsibility for protecting Yu Province. Gu Cheng later reaffirmed his appointment before the other provincial rulers 50 75.

Succession is not automatically hereditary: Old Yu Wang did not grant the position to his biological son, Gu Huan. Gu Huan’s resentment over this decision contributed to his rebellion against Gu Cheng 41 99.

Gu Cheng also passed over his four established King-level disciples when choosing a successor. He believed none could hold Desolate Heaven City after his death, whereas Qi Yuan’s Mangekyō Sharingan and potential mastery of Flying Thunder God offered a viable replacement 50.

Responsibilities and Authority

  • Defending Desolate Heaven City: Gu Cheng spends most of his time at this stronghold near the border of Yu Province and Central Province rather than in Yudu 50.
  • Containing connected Secret Realms: The city’s entrance connects to at least twenty S-Rank Secret Realm Spaces, whose passages opened to one another more than a decade earlier. Desolate Heaven City is their only exit into the outside world 50.
  • Protecting an outnumbered province: Gu Cheng identifies at least fifty King Beasts beyond the entrance, while Yu Province has fewer than twenty Kings. Rivalries among the beasts help prevent a united invasion 50.
  • Directing provincial personnel: Gu Cheng issues orders to Guardian Wardens, assigns investigations to his disciples, and dispatches Qi Yuan to assist Qing Province 23 49 60.
  • Representing Yu Province: He participates in communications between the provincial rulers and defends his chosen successor against their objections 75.
  • Limits outside his province: During the confrontation with Cangnan, Gu Cheng can order his own forces to withdraw but cannot compel Central Province’s Guardians to do the same 114.

History

Gu Cheng’s Rise and Gu Huan’s Rebellion

Gu Cheng obtained Tobirama Senju’s inheritance after failing to open the Inheritance Tower’s eighth layer despite possessing a chakra affinity of 280. He eventually became one of the strongest Kings in the Nine Provinces Alliance, and Yu Province’s standing rose considerably during his rule 22 49.

Gu Huan, his former junior fellow disciple and the previous Yu Wang’s son, pursued human experimentation and attempted to exploit his deceased father. Gu Cheng believed he had killed him, but Gu Huan survived through the methods of Orochimaru’s inheritance and later became the Freemasons’ leader 41 50 99.

Choosing Qi Yuan

Jia Nan brought Qi Yuan to Gu Cheng’s attention after recordings showed him entering the Inheritance Tower’s eighth layer. Gu Cheng examined him through the Telescope Technique and found that he was healthy despite possessing the Sharingan, with chakra approaching level five. He refused Jia Nan’s suggestion to examine Qi Yuan’s memories and ordered that his condition remain confidential 22 23.

After the Freemasons attacked Shangcheng City, Gu Cheng traced Gu Huan’s chakra toward Huangyan City. Gu Huan escaped before he arrived, so Gu Cheng summoned King Yong to investigate the local clans for possible collusion 49.

Gu Cheng then offered Qi Yuan his techniques, support against the Yang Family, and the position of future ruler. At seventy, he could feel his strength declining and feared that Desolate Heaven City would fall without a capable successor. Qi Yuan accepted the responsibility, and Gu Cheng ordered his discipleship publicly announced to deter Fengzhou and Gu Huan 49 50.

Supporting His Successor

Gu Cheng supplied Qi Yuan with ninjutsu, sealing techniques, forbidden techniques, and his personal experience with Flying Thunder God. He assigned him relief work in Qing Province to prepare him for greater responsibility, while promising to handle the Wind King if Qi Yuan pursued his feud with the Yang Family 51 60.

When other rulers pressured Qi Yuan to preserve Yang Tianbao as the One-Tail’s vessel, Gu Cheng refused to overrule his disciple. He subsequently teleported to Qing Province out of concern that the Wind King and Azure King would threaten Qi Yuan. The journey left him with less than ten percent of his chakra; upon arrival, he acknowledged that Qi Yuan had already surpassed him 75 77.

The Fall of Desolate Heaven City

When Pain’s forces attacked with six hundred billion Explosive Tags, Gu Cheng immediately ordered a retreat. He countered the bombardment with a massive flood, killed Xuntong and Preta Path with Water Severing Wave, and coordinated a trap with his four senior disciples 102 103.

The defenders initially disabled several Paths, but Deva Path broke their formation and killed three of Gu Cheng’s disciples. Super Shinra Tensei then destroyed more than half the city and killed most of its inhabitants. Exhausted and nearly killed by Human Path, Gu Cheng was rescued by Hongye, Qi Yuan’s Wood Clone 103 104.

Believing himself near death, Gu Cheng tried to entrust Yu Province to Qi Yuan once more. Hongye healed him and promised to restore the dead. When Rinne Rebirth brought the casualties back, Gu Cheng tearfully embraced his four senior disciples, whom he regarded as his closest family 104 107.

Ten-Tails and Infinite Tsukuyomi

Gu Cheng later redirected a Ten-Tails Tailed Beast Bomb with Flying Thunder God and joined other High-Level Kings in trapping the beast within a Four Red Yang Formation. Cangnan broke the barrier, and the Ten-Tails’ strengthened attack exceeded what Gu Cheng dared approach and mark for teleportation 112 113.

During the Infinite Tsukuyomi, Yanling sheltered Gu Cheng and the others inside Perfect Susanoo. Gu Cheng subsequently witnessed Qi Yuan’s true body arrive to confront Kaguya and was astonished by chakra far exceeding even Ten-Tails-host Yanling’s 122 125.

Current Holder: Gu Cheng

Appearance

  • Tall and slender, with the face of a young man despite being around seventy 22 50.
  • Usually composed, carrying the bearing of someone accustomed to authority 22.
  • His youthful appearance contrasts with the weariness he shows when discussing his declining strength and Yu Province’s future 50.

Personality

Gu Cheng prioritizes the province’s survival over lineage or seniority. He openly acknowledges that his reputation as a guardian deity exaggerates what he can accomplish alone, and he chooses Qi Yuan because he believes the younger ninja can shoulder a burden his established disciples cannot 50.

He is fiercely protective of his disciples without treating their secrets as his property. He refuses to probe Qi Yuan’s memories, rebukes King Dong for prying into his knowledge of the Rinnegan, and supports his decisions before the other rulers 23 75 97.

His attachment to his disciples is familial: he has no children and considers them his closest relatives. Their deaths leave him grief-stricken, while their resurrection moves him to tears 103 107.

Abilities & Skills

Tobirama Senju’s Inheritance

Gu Cheng possesses Tobirama Senju’s legacy and has reached the Nine-Star King rank 22 77.

  • Holds a chakra affinity of 280 22.
  • Possesses extensive ninjutsu, sealing, and forbidden-technique knowledge, which he passes on to Qi Yuan 49 51.
  • At seventy, reports declining energy and reduced endurance over the preceding year 50.

Flying Thunder God Technique

His signature Space-Time Ninjutsu allows him to teleport through Flying Thunder God Marks 22 49.

  • Uses marks near Jia Nan to reach him immediately 22 49.
  • Must travel indirectly when no coordinate exists at his destination, as demonstrated by his route through Mingcheng City to Huangyan City 49.
  • Long-distance travel consumes enormous chakra; reaching Qing Province leaves him severely depleted 77.
  • Can redirect a Tailed Beast Bomb, but must approach and mark it. The strengthened Ten-Tails’ attack is too dangerous for him to touch 112 113.
  • None of his first four disciples mastered the technique 60.

Sensory Ninjutsu and Telescope Technique

Gu Cheng can extend his perception across more than half of Yu Province and use the Telescope Technique to display a distant subject 22 23.

  • Assesses Qi Yuan’s physical health and chakra reserves remotely 23.
  • Detects Gu Huan’s chakra and traces him toward Huangyan City 49.
  • Recognizes that Qi Yuan’s normal chakra exceeds an average entry-level King’s 60.

Water Release and Elemental Ninjutsu

Water Release is one of Gu Cheng’s specialties 103.

  • Great Exploding Water Colliding Wave: Submerges nearly half of Desolate Heaven City and disables Xuntong’s Explosive Tags 103.
  • Water Severing Wave: A concealed high-pressure jet cuts through Preta Path and Xuntong 103.
  • Also deploys wind, lightning, and fire techniques against Pain’s forces 103.

Spirit Transformation Technique

This S-Rank forbidden technique separates his spirit from his physical body 103.

  • Makes his spirit form essentially immune to physical attacks 103.
  • Allows direct interference with a target’s mind and will, ignoring distance 103.
  • Lets him pass through the Four Red Yang Formation and kill trapped Foreign Race fighters 103.
  • Does not prevent Deva Path from breaking the formation and attacking its maintainers 103.

Genjutsu and Barrier Tactics

  • Bringer-of-Darkness Technique: Conceals the defenders’ preparations, though Pain’s Rinnegan prevents the intended blinding effect 103.
  • Four Red Yang Formation: Used with his disciples against Pain’s forces and later with other High-Level Kings against the Ten-Tails 103 113.
  • Impure World Reincarnation: Included among the techniques he gives Qi Yuan. Gu Cheng explains that spiritual bodies are unusually difficult to capture in their world, limiting the technique’s usefulness 99.

Equipment and Teaching Materials

  • Sealing Scroll: Contains S-Rank ninjutsu offered to Qi Yuan 49.
  • Flying Thunder God notes: A scroll recording Gu Cheng’s personal training experience with the technique 60.
  • Kunai: Carried during his intervention against the Ten-Tails 112.
  • Personal phone: Used to summon Yong He to investigate Huangyan City 49.

Relationships

  • Qi Yuan — Disciple and designated successor. Gu Cheng entrusts him with Yu Province’s future and supports him against rival rulers 50 75 77.
  • Gu Huan — Former junior fellow disciple and enemy. His experiments involving Old Yu Wang led Gu Cheng to attack him, mistakenly believing him dead 41 50.
  • Yong He / King Yong — Senior disciple and Level Seven King, entrusted with the Huangyan City investigation 49.
  • King Dong — Senior disciple whom Gu Cheng rebukes for questioning Qi Yuan about private knowledge 97.
  • Jia Nan — Direct subordinate and Guardian Warden, serving as a reporting channel and coordinator for Qi Yuan’s affairs 22 23 50.
  • Yong Fan — King Yong’s son and Gu Cheng’s granddisciple. Unlike his father, he takes an interest in the succession and resents Qi Yuan’s sudden elevation 57.
  • Huang Tian — Longstanding opponent who previously could not face Gu Cheng alone; obtaining the Rinnegan reverses that balance 103.
