Background / History

Origins and the Freemasons

Gu Huan was Old Yu Wang’s biological son and the junior fellow apprentice of Gu Cheng, the contemporary Yu Wang. He resented his father for passing over him as successor and turned to human experimentation, eventually using Old Yu Wang’s corpse in his research. Gu Cheng apparently killed him after discovering his actions, but Gu Huan survived through the life-preserving methods of Orochimaru’s Inheritance. After leaving Yu Province, he joined the Freemasons and rose to become their leader 41.

Seeking enough power to surpass Gu Cheng, Gu Huan pursued Amber’s Rinnegan-bearing body for thirty years. He eventually took it through Living Corpse Reincarnation, unaware that Amber had deliberately allowed the possession so Gu Huan’s consciousness would bear the Rinnegan’s worst side effects 41 80.

First Conflict with Qi Yuan

Gu Huan became interested in Qi Yuan’s Sharingan and Eight Gates, regarding him as valuable experimental material. While his real body remained impaired by the Rinnegan, he and Zhao Hua attacked through sacrificial Shapeshifting Technique Bodies inside a Four Violet Flames Formation 42 46.

Qi Yuan destroyed their snake attacks and forced Gu Huan to expose the feline-headed form carrying an imitation Rinnegan. After overcoming Banshō Ten’in, Qi Yuan trapped him in genjutsu through his ordinary left eye and extracted information about his real body. Zhao Hua interrupted the interrogation, but Gu Huan’s final attempt to apply a Cursed Seal failed against Susanoo 46 48.

The encounter also revealed Gu Huan’s survival to Gu Cheng. Knowing he could not defeat his senior brother in his current condition, Gu Huan fled Huangyan City with Zhao Hua before Gu Cheng arrived 49.

Amber’s Takeover and Gu Huan’s Return

Amber reclaimed his body and operated under Gu Huan’s name as the Freemasons’ leader. Consequently, the figure called “Gu Huan” who subdued Yun Ce and fought Yanling at the underground headquarters was primarily Amber, not the original human researcher 80 95 98.

Gu Huan’s consciousness had nevertheless survived. Amber feared that using Gu Huan’s senjutsu could revive him, and his spiritual power awakened during the battle with Yanling. After Yanling defeated them and took their eyes, Gu Huan survived in a weakened state; Amber died completely 98 99 108.

Using information from Amber’s memories, Gu Huan led Zhao Hua to the Amber Clan’s Hidden Shrine. There they noticed disturbing gaps in humanity’s history, only for an external illusion to erase their suspicions. A spiritual fragment concealed behind an ancestral portrait then killed Zhao Hua and attempted to possess Gu Huan. Gu Huan resisted and devoured it instead, gaining the Ōtsutsuki elder’s knowledge and power 108 109.

Ten-Tails Possession and Infinite Tsukuyomi

Gu Huan followed the Ten-Tails’ aura and watched the ensuing Six Paths battles from hiding. Rather than intervene immediately, he waited until Hongye became a Ten-Tails jinchūriki, then used a simulated Ōtsutsuki spirit to seize his body. Hongye escaped through the Spirit Transformation Technique, denying Gu Huan access to his consciousness and secrets 109 112 117 120.

Although suspicious of Black Zetsu’s sudden offer of service, Gu Huan accepted the opportunity to activate Infinite Tsukuyomi. He summoned the God Tree, opened a Rinne Sharingan, and illuminated the Nine Provinces Alliance and its connected worlds. His incomplete inherited memories did not reveal that the God Tree already had a master, making his apparent triumph serve Kaguya’s resurrection instead 121.

Gu Huan’s enormous chakra reserves did not compensate for his poor adaptation to Hongye’s body. Yanling gained the upper hand and broke through his Truth-Seeking Orb defenses with Daytime Tiger. Black Zetsu then struck from behind and used the occupied body to resurrect Kaguya. Yanling captured Gu Huan’s surviving spirit snake and preserved it inside the Naraka Path’s King of Hell 123 124.

Reincarnation and the Fall of the Gu Family

Qi Yuan searched Gu Huan’s memories for methods of refining Chakra Fruits, but found only information about planting God Trees. He then sent Gu Huan’s spirit through the Soul Reaper Gate as an investigator, secretly placing a Limbo shadow inside him. Gu Huan entered the other world with his memories erased and was reborn as a daughter in the Gu Family, guardians of the Eight-Mirror Sword 130 131.

In Soul Society, Gu Huan resumed experimental research on Hollows and Zanpakuto users. She sought Bankai with Sode no Shirayuki and hoped that understanding the Eight-Mirror Sword would grant her entry to the Soul King Palace 191.

After her powerful grandfather died, the Gu Family lost its protection. The Captain-Commander ordered its extermination, and Gu Huan fled with the Eight-Mirror Sword. Following months of pursuit by Captain-level opponents, she reached Hueco Mundo, where the Gu Family had maintained connections 191 192.

Ruler of Hueco Mundo

Over the following decades, Gu Huan completed Hollowfication, reached peak Level Eight, and defeated Hueco Mundo’s ruler. She planned to conquer Soul Society and eventually return to the Nine Provinces World to repay Qi Yuan for her humiliation 196.

Her confidence collapsed when Qi Yuan arrived: his aura alone left her trembling. She explained the Eight-Mirror Sword’s connection to the Soul King Palace, but Qi Yuan drew the weapon away and absorbed its laws. The sword she possessed was only a projection of the true Eight-Mirror Sword 196 197.

Appearance

  • Amber’s vessel: A feline-headed Foreign Race body with a Rinnegan in the right eye socket and an ordinary amber-colored left eye. Gu Huan disliked its appearance 41 46 48.
  • After absorbing the elder: White hair and thin, antenna-like growths on his forehead 109.
  • Hongye’s possessed body: White hair, a horn, floating Truth-Seeking Orbs, and a forehead Rinne Sharingan. Yanling’s Daytime Tiger broke the horn 120 121 123.
  • Soul Society incarnation: A female body; later displayed signs of Hollowfication on her face 131 196.
  • Research attire: Wore a laboratory coat while conducting experiments in Soul Society 191.

Personality

Gu Huan combines obsessive curiosity with a willingness to treat people as experimental material. Qi Yuan’s unusual abilities excite him even during combat, while his interest in the Foreign Races’ origins drives him to explore the Hidden Shrine despite his weakened state. In Soul Society, he returns to research almost immediately upon gaining the opportunity 42 47 108 191.

His ambition began with resentment over the Yu Wang succession and expanded into a desire for Ōtsutsuki power and dominion over multiple worlds. Nevertheless, he can be patient and calculating: he waits for stronger opponents to exhaust themselves and distrusts Black Zetsu’s conspicuous changes of allegiance 41 115 117 121 196.

Gu Huan’s confidence repeatedly depends on his perceived advantage. He celebrates each new body or breakthrough, but retreats when confronted by Gu Cheng’s strength or Qi Yuan’s overwhelming aura. His attachment to his reincarnated family is limited; he values the conveniences and research materials they provide more than their survival 49 120 191 197.

Abilities & Skills

Orochimaru’s Inheritance and Body Transfer

Gu Huan’s inherited techniques support bodily replacement and repeated survival after apparent death 41 108.

  • Living Corpse Reincarnation: Transfers his consciousness into another body; used to seize Amber’s vessel 41.
  • Limitations: Requires another vessel within a few years unless further developed. His recent transfer also left his mental power unstable and vulnerable to genjutsu 47 48.
  • Spiritual survival: His consciousness endured Amber’s takeover, and a spirit-snake remnant survived the loss of Hongye’s occupied body 98 124.
  • Enhanced possession: After absorbing the Ōtsutsuki fragment, condensed a simulated spirit that bypassed Hongye’s Truth-Seeking Orbs and Shinra Tensei to enter his body 120.

Shapeshifting Technique

Gu Huan remotely operates sacrificial bodies that reproduce his appearance and techniques 46 48.

  • Can reproduce forbidden techniques and Kekkei Genkai, including an incomplete imitation Rinnegan 46 48.
  • The body used against Qi Yuan possessed less than one-tenth of his real strength 48.
  • Limited chakra restricted its available techniques; genjutsu cast on it could affect his controlling consciousness 48.

Snake Techniques and Cursed Seals

Gu Huan employs venomous snakes for restraint and overwhelming attacks 46.

  • Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Releases large snakes from his sleeves 46.
  • Many Snakes Formation: Produces a mass of snakes that can climb over one another to pursue airborne targets 46.
  • Paralytic venom: Claimed that a single bite would render Qi Yuan unable to move 46.
  • Cursed Seal attack: Attempted to bite Qi Yuan and apply a seal, but struck Susanoo instead 48.

Senjutsu

Gu Huan obtained the means to practice sage arts after nearly dying in an unusual S-Rank Secret Realm Space in Lei Province—the same space where a previous Thunder King died 98.

  • Sage Art: White Rage Technique: Amber used Gu Huan’s inherited knowledge to force Yanling’s Perfect Susanoo to regress 98.
  • Using these arts risked reawakening Gu Huan’s suppressed consciousness within Amber 98.

Borrowed Rinnegan and Six Paths Powers

Gu Huan’s access to these abilities depended on occupied vessels rather than a documented natural awakening of his original body’s eyes 41 120.

  • Banshō Ten’in: Used through his Shapeshifting Technique Body to pull Qi Yuan toward him 48.
  • Truth-Seeking Orbs: Controlled Hongye’s five orbs, but Yanling’s Six Paths-enhanced attacks and Daytime Tiger penetrated their defenses 120 123.
  • Ten-Tails regeneration: Rapidly repaired injuries sustained against Yanling 123.
  • Infinite Tsukuyomi and World of Trees Birth: Cast while occupying Hongye, trapping victims in dreams and binding them to the God Tree 121 122.
  • Rinne Sharingan limits: Could not use Amenominaka or the eye’s other abilities beyond Infinite Tsukuyomi; its nine tomoe dropped to six after casting 123.
  • Combat limitation: Struggled to express the borrowed body’s full strength despite possessing more chakra than Yanling 123.

Research and Shinigami Development

Gu Huan applies experimentation to unfamiliar power systems rather than relying solely on inherited techniques 191.

  • Studied naturally occurring Hollows and humans with powerful Zanpakuto inheritances 191.
  • Used research to deepen her understanding of Sode no Shirayuki and accelerate progress toward Bankai 191.
  • Completed Hollowfication and reached peak Level Eight in Hueco Mundo 196.

  • Six Paths Staff — Wielded while occupying Hongye’s body, including during his duel with Yanling 121 123.
  • Sode no Shirayuki — Ice-and-snow-type Zanpakuto obtained from a Secret Realm Space in Soul Society 191.

  • Gu Cheng / Yu Wang — Senior fellow apprentice and longstanding enemy; apparently killed Gu Huan after discovering his experiments 41 49.
  • Zhao Hua — Disciple and assistant. Rescued Gu Huan from genjutsu and accompanied him to the Hidden Shrine, where the concealed spirit killed him 48 108 109.
  • Amber — Intended victim of Living Corpse Reincarnation who instead exploited Gu Huan to absorb the Rinnegan’s side effects. Their struggle continued within Amber’s body 80 98.
  • Qi Yuan / Yanling — Recurring enemy, captor, and eventual controller. Preserved Gu Huan’s spirit and dispatched him to investigate another world 48 99 124 131.
  • Hongye — Victim of Gu Huan’s enhanced possession technique; escaped in spirit form before Gu Huan could obtain his secrets 120.
  • Black Zetsu — Untrusted temporary collaborator who betrayed Gu Huan and used his occupied body to resurrect Kaguya 121 123 124.
  • Gu Family of Soul Society — Reincarnated family and source of research resources. Gu Huan escaped its extermination carrying the Eight-Mirror Sword 131 191 192.
