Time seemed to slow in the sunlit ward of Konoha Hospital.

Ling's left arm was still in a cast, suspended before his chest, but thanks to Tsunade's superb Medical Ninjutsu and the Uzumaki Clan's powerful recuperative constitution, his bones were healing far faster than an ordinary person's. A tingling itch had replaced the constant, intense pain, signaling the rapid formation of new callus. The recovery of his eyes demanded even more care.

The aftereffects of forcing himself beyond his limits to activate the Eye of Purification and Erosion that day were far worse than he had imagined. It was not merely the depletion of his chakra network and the rupturing of blood vessels in his eyes. On a deeper level, the forced fusion of two entirely different powers-the Yin Release ocular power inherent to the Uchiha Sharingan and the older, more obscure Yin Release energy from the Mysterious Shard-had caused a kind of "rejection." They tangled and collided, yet maintained a dangerous balance under the Jōgan's peculiar harmonizing ability, leaving Ling's eyes extremely sensitive and unstable.

Tsunade came to examine him personally almost every day. Her Yang Release chakra acted like the most precise probe, carefully exploring the energy pathways within his eyes, her brow often furrowed.

"The two energies are slowly becoming more integrated," Tsunade explained after one examination, pointing to a complex spectrogram on an instrument with a researcher's focus in her voice. "This kind of fusion... I've never seen anything like it. The Sharingan's ocular power seems to be actively adapting to, or even 'devouring,' that foreign energy, but the foreign energy seems to be of a higher fundamental order, making the process unpredictable. How do you feel now?"

Ling closed his eyes and carefully assessed the sensations. "My vision is mostly clear, but I occasionally see double, especially when chakra is flowing intensely. When I concentrate, that sense of 'insight' is still there, but I don't dare use it lightly. The moment I try, my eyes feel as though they're about to explode."

"That's a self-protection mechanism," Tsunade said firmly. "Your body is warning you that these eyes aren't ready yet. Keep resting and take your medicine on schedule. I'll adjust the Sealing Jutsu Formula to stabilize them further. Remember, until I give you permission, you are absolutely forbidden from using your ocular power, even for the most basic observation."

"Understood." Ling nodded. He knew better than anyone how dangerous his eyes were at present. It was not just the risk of blindness; they could also trigger an energy backlash that damaged his foundation.

Alongside his physical treatment, psychological evaluations and intelligence reviews were also underway. A psychologist from the Yamanaka Clan visited regularly, gently helping him work through the killing, fear, and helplessness before absolute power that had accumulated during the mission, ensuring these negative emotions would not develop into inner demons. Analysts from the intelligence department asked him to recall the mission's details even more frequently, particularly the characteristics of Pain's and Konan's abilities, the structure of the Ryūmyaku Node, and the various clues within the Land of Rain. Drawing on the extraordinary memory and insight granted by the Jōgan-not through active use, but through lingering passive impressions-Ling supplied a wealth of valuable intelligence, helping Konoha steadily refine its understanding of the Akatsuki.

This enforced period of "idleness" was not entirely bad for Ling. It offered a rare opportunity to settle his mind, review what he had learned, and consider his future path.

As for taijutsu, despite the inconvenience of his left arm, he continued training his right arm and core strength. In his mind, he repeatedly played through every detail of his clashes with Pain and Konan, analyzing his shortcomings and areas for improvement. That brief encounter with opponents of such caliber had made him understand deeply that relying solely on his eyes was nowhere near enough. Physical fundamentals, combat intelligence, and the ability to adapt in battle were all indispensable.

Chakra control training was an even greater priority. Unable to use his ocular power, he focused more intently on improving the efficiency of his chakra refinement and the precision of his control. He tried concentrating his perception in his fingertips to imitate a Medical Ninja's Chakra Scalpel. Although he was nowhere near capable of treating anyone, this exercise in exceptionally fine control would greatly benefit both his future ninjutsu and his control of ocular power.

Occasionally, he also exchanged a few words with Uzumaki Xi, who was staying next door.

Xi's body recovered somewhat more slowly than Ling's; replenishing her depleted vital essence was not the work of a single day. Still, color gradually returned to her face, and much of the gloom left by her long imprisonment faded from her features. Shizune and the Medical Team took particularly good care of her, and Tsunade personally prepared a prescription to nourish her body.

One afternoon, sunlight streamed through the windows into the ward. After finishing a simple set of breathing exercises, Ling saw Xi sitting beside the window, gazing absently at the lush trees outside.

"What are you looking at?" Ling walked over and sat in a chair beside her, which he had dragged over with his right hand.

Xi came back to herself and smiled faintly, her dark red eyes looking a little warmer in the sunlight. "Nothing. I just think... it's wonderful to be able to look at sunlight and green leaves so peacefully." She paused, her voice gentle. "During those years in the Land of Rain, the sky was always gray, and the rain was bitterly cold, as though it would never end."

Ling was silent for a moment before asking, "About the Ryūmyaku... and your contract. What do you plan to do?"

Xi's gaze dimmed briefly. She lowered her head and looked at her still somewhat pale fingers. "The contract... Pain twisted it, but the connection is still there. I can feel the Ryūmyaku still roaring in pain. As the Seal Guardian Miko, stabilizing the Ryūmyaku is my duty. But..." She raised her head, confusion and a trace of fear in her eyes. "With my current strength, I couldn't possibly approach the Ryūmyaku's core again, let alone establish a new contract. And Pain, he..."

"Konoha will find a way," Ling reassured her, though he knew how difficult that would be. "With everyone working together, there will be a way. Your most important task right now is to recover."

"Yes." Xi nodded, determination returning to her gaze. "I'll get better as quickly as I can. Mr. Araki... and so many people from the Land of Rain... their sacrifices can't be in vain."

Her strength moved Ling a little. This seemingly frail girl held such resilient strength within her.

Aside from Xi, other people occasionally came to visit Ling.

Rock Lee and Tenten came once, bringing a basket of fruit and boundless enthusiasm. Waving the arm that had only just come out of its cast, Rock Lee loudly proclaimed that "the recovery speed of youth will never lose to Ling's," and promised they would have an all-out taijutsu match once Ling recovered. Tenten carefully washed and cut the fruit, reminding Ling to rest properly.

Neji also visited once, looking as aloof as ever, though his Byakugan held less of their former distance and more scrutiny and... perhaps a hint of recognition? He said little, merely leaving behind some of the Hyuga Clan's specially prepared ointment for soothing chakra pathways before departing.

The visitor who surprised Ling most was Naruto.

The boy seemed to have just returned from a mission outside the village, still travel-worn. The moment he entered the ward, he shouted boisterously, "Ling! I heard you came back from a su-per dangerous mission! Are you okay?"

He looked at Ling's arm in its sling and the faint marks around his eyes-the ruptured external blood vessels had healed, but outsiders could not see the internal problems-with blue eyes full of concern and... a barely perceptible hint of envy?

"It's nothing serious anymore." Ling smiled. He always found it difficult to turn away Naruto's unalloyed concern.

"Great!" Naruto sighed in relief, then grew excited again. "Let me tell you, the Pervy Sage and I ran into some really powerful opponents out there too! And I learned a new..."

He enthusiastically launched into an account of his training and missions with Jiraiya, gesticulating wildly and spitting as he spoke. Ling listened quietly, occasionally interjecting a sentence or two. He could sense that the vast, scorching chakra inside Naruto-the Nine-Tails'-seemed more condensed and... active than before? It seemed that, under Jiraiya's guidance, Naruto was growing at an equally astonishing pace.

Listening to Naruto's lively voice and looking at the peaceful scene of Konoha outside the window, Ling felt much of the heaviness and gloom from his experiences in the Land of Rain seem to lift. This was what he wanted to protect: this noisy, ordinary daily life.

Yet beneath the calm, the undercurrents had never stopped stirring.

That night, Ling had just finished a round of chakra meditation and was preparing to rest when the ward's door silently opened. The visitor was not a medical worker, but Fox, wearing a fox mask.

"How are you feeling?" Fox's voice came through the mask, cool as ever, yet seemingly less strictly businesslike than before, with an indescribable hint of... familiarity?

"Fine. Lady Tsunade said my recovery is progressing as expected," Ling answered, sitting up. He noticed that Fox's breathing was slightly quicker than usual. She carried the chill of the night and a very faint scent of... blood?

"Is there a mission?" Fox asked directly.

Fox walked to the window and checked the situation outside, then turned, her gaze sharp behind her mask. "In a sense. Though Danzo is dead and Root has officially been disbanded, a centipede doesn't stop moving the moment it dies. Some remnants utterly loyal to Danzo haven't given up entirely. They're still operating in secret, trying to rebuild Root, or... take revenge."

Ling's heart sank slightly. He had not been naive enough to believe that Danzo's death would solve everything, but hearing that the remnants were still active nevertheless struck him as troublesome.

"Are they targeting me?"

"We're not certain, but it's highly likely," Fox said. "You participated in the operation that brought Danzo down, and you possess the Sharingan they covet. From the scraps of intelligence we've intercepted recently and the peripheral bases we've cleared out, there are signs that they're paying close attention to you. Especially after word spread within a small circle that you brought back important intelligence from the Land of Rain and that your eyes had undergone a 'special change.'"

Ling frowned. This was indeed a problem. An open attack was easy to evade; a hidden one was hard to guard against. Being targeted by former Root members lurking in the shadows, skilled in assassination and conspiracy, was certainly not a pleasant experience.

"What does Lord Hokage intend to do?"

"Strengthen security and lure them out," Fox said succinctly. "Your security level has been raised again, and more concealed sentries have been stationed around the hospital. At the same time, we'll deliberately release vague information about your recovery and the 'instability' of your abilities to tempt them into acting. Then we'll have a chance to catch all these remnants in one sweep."

A very standard tactic. Use himself as bait to eliminate potential threats. Ling had no objection. In the ninja world, passive defense was never as effective as taking the initiative.

"What do I need to do?"

"Continue recovering 'without concern,'" Fox said. "Stay alert, but don't let on that you know. If you notice anything unusual, report it immediately through the emergency channel. We'll handle the rest."

"Understood."

Fox nodded, seemingly ready to leave, but paused before turning away. There seemed to be an exceedingly subtle change in her tone. "Your eyes... if they really are as 'special' as the report describes, perhaps someday they'll help us see more of what's hidden in the darkness. Protect them, and protect yourself."

With that, she lingered no longer. Her figure slipped into the shadows of the corridor beyond the door and vanished.

Ling sat alone on the hospital bed, the moonlight outside cool and clear. The embers of Root... the Akatsuki's threat... the hidden dangers in my own eyes... and that mysterious person whose whereabouts are unknown...

Tangled threads and potential crises closed around him like a spider's web. He drew a deep breath, feeling the faint itch of his healing left arm and the dormant power deep within his eyes, stirring restlessly.

His recovery period was nearing its end, and another storm seemed to be approaching. But this time, he was no longer the genin or novice Anbu who could only endure passively and struggle to survive desperate situations.

He was Crow. He was Uchiha Ling, wielder of the Eye of Purification and Erosion.

He looked forward to being tempered by the next storm.
