| Rank-29 Soul Grandmaster | 15 16 18 | Reached this level with extensive clan resources despite a detrimental Martial Soul mutation. Possesses two hundred-year Soul Rings but remains unable to break through to rank 30. |
Background / History
Yu Xiaogang was born into the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan as the son of Yu Yuanzhen, a rank-95 Super Douluo. His Martial Soul underwent a detrimental mutation, and substantial family resources only brought him to rank 29. After being expelled from the clan, he became determined to gain recognition through Martial Soul research and eventually return with enough prestige to reclaim a place in its genealogy 16 18 37 59.
Bibi Dong was his former girlfriend. Through her, he gained access to Spirit Hall’s books, which supplied material for his theories. When he later hears Tang San’s thoughts, he learns that she separated from him to protect him and that Qian Xunji sexually assaulted her, resulting in Qian Renxue’s birth 9 15.
He also traveled with Flender and Liu Erlong as the Golden Iron Triangle, serving as its Horn of Wisdom. He and Liu Erlong intended to marry, but Yu Luomian interrupted their wedding and revealed that they were first cousins. Yu Xiaogang fled, while Liu Erlong eventually established Blue Tyrant Academy and continued hoping he would return to her 16 77.
Appearance
Tang San describes Yu Xiaogang as a scruffy middle-aged man with a buzz cut and an ordinary, somewhat unattractive face 9.
- Hair: Closely cropped in a buzz cut 9.
- Injuries after the theoretical debate: A swollen face and several missing teeth from Leng Yulai’s slap 17 18.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is driven by the need to overturn his reputation as an unsuccessful cultivator. He seeks exceptionally talented disciples whose achievements could validate his theories, earn him invitations from the Two Great Empires, and force his clan to welcome him back. His ambitions later extend to training a god and reaching the Divine Realm through that disciple 8 15 37.
His desire for recognition repeatedly overrides honesty. He records Tang San’s techniques, makes alterations to disguise their origin, and claims them as his own research. Although he knows where the material came from, he increasingly treats his compilation as an original achievement 31 37 57.
He is vindictive toward criticism and rejection. After hearing Tang San’s contempt, he resolves to steal his opportunities and obstruct his future. His feelings toward Bibi Dong are similarly possessive: he first becomes furious over what Qian Xunji did to her, then privately condemns her for having another man’s child while still considering how to benefit from her knowledge and affection 9 10 20 57.
Abilities & Skills
Hearing Tang San’s Thoughts
Yu Xiaogang begins hearing Tang San’s internal monologue during their encounter at Nuoding Academy’s gate. He initially searches for an unseen speaker before realizing that the voice belongs to Tang San 8 9.
- Restricted target: He explicitly complains that he can only eavesdrop on Tang San 19.
- Knowledge gathering: Learns about Tang San’s previous life, Xiao Wu’s identity, the future Shrek Seven Devils, and Tang Hao’s protection 9 15 19.
- Technique acquisition: Obtains the Mysterious Heaven Skill and other Tang Sect methods by listening to Tang San’s thoughts 19 31 37.
- Not reincarnation: His information comes from eavesdropping; Zhao Wuji’s later suspicion that he might also be a reincarnator is speculation 19 54.
Martial Soul and Soul Rings
His unnamed mutated Martial Soul limits his cultivation despite his family’s investment. Academy students describe its form as neither pig nor dog and mock its flatulence-based Soul Skill 16 33.
- Cultivation ceiling shown: Rank 29 15 18.
- Soul Ring configuration: Two hundred-year rings 16.
- Golden Iron Triangle: His former team is known for a powerful three-in-one Martial Soul Fusion Skill 37.
- Unfulfilled breakthrough plan: He hopes to obtain Xiao Wu’s hundred-thousand-year Soul Ring and Soul Bone, but initially lacks the strength to act 15.
Martial Soul Theory
Yu Xiaogang presents himself as a leading theoretical authority and publishes the Martial Soul Ten Core Competition Theory. He acknowledges privately that his material came from Spirit Hall’s books, while Leng Yulai and Tang San accuse him of plagiarism and unsupported conclusions 9 16.
| Subject | Yu Xiaogang’s position | Challenge or outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Martial Soul quality | “There are no useless martial souls, only useless soul masters.” | Other characters contrast this claim with his own cultivation stagnation and dismissal of Blue Silver Grass 10 18. |
| Martial Soul categories | Only Beast Martial Souls and Tool Martial Souls exist. | Students question where water-ball and flame Martial Souls fit into this division 19. |
| Martial Soul mutation | Liu Erlong’s Fire Dragon is weaker than the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon because it lacks lightning’s physical enhancement. | Leng Yulai argues that its changed attribute represents a different developmental direction, not an automatic loss of strength 16 17. |
| Soul Ring absorption | Fixed age limits apply to each successive ring. | Kai’s ten-thousand-year first and second rings contradict these limits; Leng Yulai emphasizes constitution and pressure tolerance 17. |
| Blue Silver Grass development | In Tang San’s previous life, recommends poison and animal-type rings for control abilities. | Tang San considers this unsuitable for his life-attribute Martial Soul; his current-life plant-type first ring instead provides healing and stamina recovery 14 27 54. |
His publicly stated Soul Ring limits are as follows. These are his disputed theoretical limits, not his personal Soul Ring configuration 17.
| Soul Ring | Claimed Age Limit |
|---|---|
| First | 423 years 17 |
| Second | 764 years 17 |
| Third | 2,200 years 17 |
| Fourth | 7,000 years 17 |
| Fifth | 12,000 years 17 |
| Sixth | 20,000 years 17 |
| Seventh | 30,000–50,000 years 17 |
| Eighth | Over 50,000 years 17 |
| Ninth | Over 100,000 years 17 |
Gang Family Secret Manual
Yu Xiaogang compiles stolen Tang Sect cultivation methods and Self-Created Soul Skills into the Gang Family Secret Manual. He modifies passages both to conceal their similarity to Tang San’s techniques and because he does not fully understand some sections 37 57.
- Recipients: Dai Mubai, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun; he also claims to have changed Qin Ming through his instruction 57.
- Demonstrated benefits: Ma Hongjun’s Soul Power develops faster, Oscar passes level 30, and Dai Mubai gains confidence that he can challenge Dai Weisi 57 62.
- Uncertain safety: The narration questions the consequences of his haphazard modifications, but the supplied events do not establish a specific resulting injury 41.
- Ownership claim: He intends to publish first so that Tang San will appear to be the plagiarist rather than the source 31.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Rejecting Tang San
At Nuoding Academy’s entrance, Yu Xiaogang interrupts the confrontation between Tang San and an extortionate gatekeeper. Hearing that Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass with innate full Soul Power, he infers that the boy must have Twin Martial Souls and initially sees him as a means to prove his theories 8.
That plan changes when he hears Tang San’s thoughts. He discovers that Tang San was his disciple in a previous life, considers him useless, and intends to exploit his connections. Yu Xiaogang abandons recruitment but encourages Tang San to enroll so that he can continue gathering information. He publicly dismisses Blue Silver Grass while privately planning to seize Tang San’s opportunities 9 10.
Defeat at Nuoding Academy
After learning about Kai’s Heavenly Spear and innate full Soul Power, Yu Xiaogang approaches Kai and Gu Luoyi and demands that they acknowledge him as their teacher. Leng Yulai, already their instructor, confronts him and releases enough pressure to make him believe she is a Soul Saint 15.
Their dispute becomes an internal theoretical contest. Leng Yulai challenges his treatment of Martial Soul mutation and fixed Soul Ring limits. When Kai’s rings contradict his claims, Yu Xiaogang rushes forward demanding the method behind them. Leng Yulai slaps him down, knocking out several teeth, and the assembled teachers and students reject his defense that he is acting for the Soul Master World’s benefit 16 17.
Appropriating Tang San’s Techniques
Following his humiliation, Yu Xiaogang concentrates on recording and modifying the techniques overheard from Tang San. He plans to teach them at Shrek Academy, win the Soul Master Tournament through his students, and return to his clan as a celebrated researcher 19 31 37.
He leaves Nuoding Academy with his materials despite open ridicule from students and teachers. His departure prompts celebrations, while he threatens to have his future Shrek students defeat those mocking him 32 33.
Teaching at Shrek Academy
Yu Xiaogang reaches Shrek near Suotuo City and identifies himself through his connection to Flender. Though disappointed by the academy’s dilapidated condition, he accepts it as a starting point and anticipates eventually moving to Liu Erlong’s Blue Tyrant Academy 37.
He shares his purportedly original cultivation methods in exchange for the academy helping establish his reputation. Their benefits earn him the loyalty of Dai Mubai, Oscar, and Ma Hongjun, even as Zhao Wuji remains suspicious of his expertise and the manual’s origins 40 54 57 62.
The Stolen-Manual Dispute
Tang San’s arrival threatens Yu Xiaogang’s claims of authorship. Zhao Wuji hears enough of Tang San’s thoughts to question where the manuals came from and confronts Yu Xiaogang about having stolen material associated with the Clear Sky Sect 54 58 60.
Yu Xiaogang responds with a vicious oath invoking his own clan’s destruction, but fears that explaining his supposed research in front of Tang San will expose him. Zhao Wuji warns that his actions have endangered the entire academy 59 60.
Flender plans to send Yu Xiaogang back to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan for protection while moving the others to Blue Tyrant Academy without Tang San. Later, Tang San wakes to find Shrek’s teachers, students, and administrators gone; Yu Xiaogang’s individual arrival at his clan is not shown in the supplied passages 61 66.
