Background / History

Childhood and Awakening

Kai's parents were Spirit Hall deacons who helped children awaken their martial souls. Shortly after his birth, they died while trying to evacuate villagers caught in the battle between Tang Hao and Qian Xunji. Spirit Hall provided Gold Soul Coins as compensation, but its leaders' failure to take meaningful responsibility became the source of Kai's resentment 1.

Su Yuntao, a close friend of his parents, cared for Kai and helped preserve his inherited home. The property had passed from his grandparents to his father and then to him; it included a courtyard and a basement cultivation chamber 1 3.

During his awakening, Kai activated the check-in system and received twin martial souls, level 20 innate full soul power, and the support of two Titled Douluos. He refused Su Yuntao's invitation to join Spirit Hall, promised to repay his kindness, and asked him to conceal the twin martial souls 1.

Forming His Household and Obtaining Soul Spirits

Leng Yaozhu and Leng Yulai arrived at Kai's home and addressed him as their lord. After testing his body and spiritual power, Leng Yaozhu estimated that he could withstand an ordinary soul ring of roughly fifteen hundred years. The sisters recommended further physical training and whale rubber to improve his endurance 3.

Kai proposed obtaining funds by robbing traffickers and the oppressive nobles behind them. Leng Yulai subsequently returned with valuables, ten-thousand-year whale glue, and Gu Luoyi, a rescued girl who wanted strength to avenge her parents. Recognizing her loss and remembering Su Yuntao's care for him, Kai welcomed her into their group 4 6.

At Leng Yulai's reminder, Kai chose the Soul Spirit Method rather than hunting a separate Soul Beast for every ring. An injured ten-thousand-year Light Saint Tiger willingly contracted with him in exchange for care of its cub, Adola. Kai received two ten-thousand-year rings and later helped secure a thousand-year Light Spirit Butterfly for Gu Luoyi 7 12 13.

Nuoding Academy and the Tang Family Conflict

Kai and Gu Luoyi entered Nuoding Academy with a private dormitory arranged through Su Yuntao. Kai's public records concealed his twin martial souls and level 20 awakening, presenting him instead as a student with one top-level martial soul and innate full soul power. The Leng sisters posed as teachers from a secluded sect 7 13.

When Yu Xiaogang demanded that Kai and Gu Luoyi become his disciples, the sisters challenged his qualifications. During the resulting debate, Kai displayed his first two ten-thousand-year rings, directly contradicting Yu Xiaogang's claimed limits for early soul rings. Leng Yulai intervened when Yu Xiaogang demanded the method behind them 15 17.

Tang Hao and Tang San also targeted the method. Kai acted as bait while his companions captured Tang San. The Leng sisters then defeated Tang Hao, severed his left arm and right leg, took two inherited Soul Bones, and extracted the Tang family's cultivation knowledge through Soul Search 21 22.

Leng Yulai's search revealed that Tang San was a reincarnator and that people close to him could hear his thoughts. Concerned that Tang San might claim the immortal herbs first, Kai immediately redirected his group toward the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 23.

Cooperation with Dugu Bo

Kai approached Dugu Bo through negotiation rather than claiming his medicinal garden by force. He identified Dugu Bo's poisoning symptoms and explained several possible treatments, including their drawbacks. His proposals included using two plants with the well's waters, transferring poison into a Soul Bone, condensing a Poison Pellet, or evolving Dugu Bo's martial soul 25.

Kai recognized Dugu Bo as the well's owner because he had discovered it first. His priority was preventing its resources from reaching Tang San or the Clear Sky Sect. After hearing about Tang Hao's attempted robbery, Dugu Bo agreed to guard the well against them 23 27.

Back at Nuoding Academy, Kai warned the dean about possible retaliation and supplied a Soul Tool to summon help. Tang Hao did not attack the academy during the following six years 29 43.

Graduation and Skywater Academy

Kai graduated from Nuoding Academy as both a Soul Ancestor and a Level 4 Soul Engineer. He gave Soul Tools to Su Yuntao and the dean in gratitude, intending to remain in contact with them 43.

He rejected the imperial academies to avoid becoming bound to either empire, and again refused Spirit Hall's academy over his parents' treatment. Skywater Academy initially seemed unsuitable because it admitted only female students, despite its expertise with ice and water martial souls 46 47.

Kai eventually selected Exotic Beast Academy and set out with his companions, hoping to participate in the Soul Master Tournament. Their journey changed course after an encounter with Shrek and Skywater representatives at an inn. Kai supported helping Skywater when Ma Hongjun harassed Shui Bing'er; the Leng sisters intervened, and Kai's group paid for the damage afterward 67 68 71.

The encounter led to an alliance with Skywater. Shui Jingyan offered Kai a tournament-team position, and he and Gu Luoyi ultimately registered as students there. With the Leng sisters' backing, Skywater, Godwind, and Blazing Fire agreed to merge, while their leaders also discussed establishing a sect 78 80.

Personality

Kai is loyal to those who care for him. He credits Su Yuntao with his survival, promises to repay him, and later gives both him and Nuoding Academy's dean personally manufactured Soul Tools. His compassion toward Gu Luoyi comes from recognizing an orphan's vulnerability in his own experience 1 6 43.

His resentment is directed more narrowly than blanket hatred of Spirit Hall. He acknowledges its achievements and does not blame ordinary personnel such as Su Yuntao, but cannot accept how its leaders treated his parents' deaths. He likewise rejects allegiance to imperial families, drawing on an egalitarian outlook from his previous life 1 46 47.

Kai combines generosity toward companions with ruthless treatment of enemies. He feels no moral burden about robbing traffickers and oppressive nobles, helps arrange the ambush against Tang Hao, and considers accepting Ning Rongrong and Zhu Zhuqing partly to undermine Tang San's plans 4 21 78.

He is cautious about dependence on established powers. He conceals sensitive abilities, considers founding his own faction, and seeks alliances that support his future growth rather than placing him under another ruler 1 68 80.
