Personality

Minato is gentle, cheerful, and composed. Jiraiya considers him an ideal inheritor of the Will of Fire, while Orochimaru values his quick thinking. He openly identifies protecting Konoha and spending time with loved ones as the things he enjoys most 100 133 169.

His loyalty does not prevent him from questioning Konoha’s leadership. The Third Hokage’s reluctance to act decisively against Danzō disappoints him and strengthens his resolve to become Hokage himself. Conversely, his reverence for the office is strong enough that he threatens to fight Tsunade when she insults it 167 168 169 229.

Minato is less assured in romance. He initially fails to acknowledge that Kushina is his girlfriend until she physically prompts him, and he is easily embarrassed by Ye Feng’s teasing. He also has a mischievous side: after discovering Ye Feng’s secret use of Flying Thunder God, he bargains for four meals in exchange for silence 18 155 203.

His concern for others can override his usual composure. Believing Ye Feng is dying drives him into a chakra-exhausting attack against the Third Kazekage. Later, his determination to protect Naruto makes him resist involving his son in dangerous missions and war 249 632 662.

Flying Thunder God Technique

Minato’s signature Space-Time Ninjutsu allows him to teleport to specially placed marks and marked kunai. He learns it after beginning his study of the technique’s scroll and modifies its execution 104 116 135 141.

History

Team 7 and Early Recognition

Already acquainted with Ye Feng, Minato becomes his partner in developing the Rasengan. Their experimentation absorbs him so completely that he forgets a promised shopping date with Kushina 18 57.

He later takes charge of Team 7, consisting of Ye Feng, Kakashi Hatake, and Uchiha Shinichi. Alongside training them through sparring, he leads their first C-rank mission against Black Wind Stockade. After learning the range of Ye Feng’s sensory ability, he orders the squad to keep it secret 100 103 108.

Minato represents Konoha in a jonin match against Yura and Toroi, defeating both. His public use of Flying Thunder God attracts Orochimaru’s admiration and prompts the Third Raikage to order an investigation into him 133 134 135.

Root Attacks and Hokage Ambitions

After Root ninja attack him and Ye Feng, Minato reports the incident to the Third Hokage. He is dismayed when the response falls short of the immediate action against Danzō he hoped for. Jiraiya explains the political history behind the Third Hokage’s tolerance of Danzō, but Minato remains unwilling to accept it 167 168.

With Jiraiya’s encouragement, his earlier dream of becoming Hokage becomes a concrete commitment to changing Konoha. During a later crisis, he helps Orochimaru protect the hospitalized Third Hokage and Hatake Sakumo from attackers 169 224 226 227.

Sunagakure and Iwagakure Battles

Facing the Third Kazekage exposes the limits of Minato’s offensive power against iron-sand defenses. When Ye Feng takes a seemingly fatal blow meant for him, Minato unleashes his experimental repeated-teleportation assault. The Kazekage survives behind an iron-sand layer, leaving Minato nearly unable to move from chakra exhaustion 248 249.

Minato refuses the Kazekage’s offer to spare him in exchange for service and is rescued before the killing blow lands. He subsequently returns to operations with Ye Feng and Tsunade, participating in ambushes against isolated Sunagakure ninja 250 260.

Against Iwagakure, he kills at least thirty ninja and badly injures more than a dozen within seconds, although the attack again leaves him depleted. By Konoha’s postwar celebrations, he has earned the title Yellow Flash 284 342.

Ryūmyaku Mission and the Visiting Naruto

During the mission involving Sara and Anrokuzan, Minato helps investigate a barrier and coordinates the effort to protect Sara while she shuts down the Ryūmyaku 382 385.

He meets a visiting Naruto who identifies him as his father and the Fourth Hokage. Their conflicting accounts of Konoha’s leadership reveal that they come from different worlds: Tsunade is becoming the Fourth Hokage in Minato’s world. Minato consequently decides that erasing their memories is unnecessary 392.

He returns believing Ye Feng has died during the mission and grieves with Kushina, also telling her about meeting their future son 393.

Third Shinobi World War and Fifth Hokage

During Ye Feng’s absence, Minato fights on the Kumogakure front against the Fourth Raikage and Eight-Tails jinchūriki. He kills or wounds more than a dozen elite jonin and ultimately captures the Raikage, forcing Kumogakure’s withdrawal 416.

He then accompanies Kakashi’s team toward Kannabi Bridge but leaves to assist against an Iwagakure attack. The bridge mission succeeds, though its aftermath includes Obito’s burial, Rin’s death, and Kakashi’s despair 416.

Minato’s wartime achievements win broad support. After Tsunade steps down, he succeeds her as Fifth Hokage, rather than becoming Fourth Hokage as his counterpart did in the visiting Naruto’s world 392 416 459.

Naruto’s Birth and the Nine-Tails Attack

Forewarned of a threat during Kushina’s delivery, Minato arranges multiple possible birthing sites. A White Zetsu impersonating him nevertheless attacks Kushina and triggers premature labor 442 458.

Minato stabilizes the Nine-Tails seal during delivery, then rescues the newborn Naruto when Obito takes him hostage. After the Nine-Tails breaks free, he entrusts Kushina to Shadow Six and uses Flying Thunder God to evade the beast while buying time for her treatment 459 460 461.

Both parents survive. Afterward, Ye Feng finds Minato and Kushina together at home, happily gathered around Naruto 466.

Hokage Administration and the Allied Shinobi Forces

As Hokage, Minato oversees Konoha’s development, purchases Spirit Talismans for the village, and arranges for the Hyuga Clan to take in Toneri. Although concerned about the destabilizing potential of the Tenseigan, he accepts Ye Feng’s judgment 479 528 539.

After learning that the Akatsuki intend to gather the tailed beasts into an ultimate weapon, he orders warnings sent to the hidden villages and calls a Five Kage Summit. He subsequently assumes command of the Allied Shinobi Forces, appointing the Fourth Raikage deputy commander and Shikaku Nara chief strategist 632 644.

During the war, he fights the reincarnated Tobirama while Sasuke and Itachi engage Hashirama. Naruto rescues him from Tobirama’s electrified-water trap, forcing Minato to acknowledge that he can no longer keep his son out of the conflict 656 662.

Natural-Energy Resurgence

After rain revitalizes the Shinobi World, Minato discovers that his own strength has risen to late Super-Kage level. He reports the restoration of vegetation and water in formerly arid regions to Ye Feng 804.

Ye Feng warns that animals, summoning beasts, and gifted civilians may also have become stronger. Minato immediately teleports away to discuss the resulting security risks with the other four deputy alliance leaders 804.
