Appearance and Physiology
Early Spirit Chickens retain the shape of Precious Chickens but become larger, heavier, and more visibly spiritual 7.
- Plumage: The first transformed birds have gray-black feathers streaked with iridescent light 7.
- Size and weight: These birds are roughly half again as large as ordinary Precious Chickens and weigh as much as two or three of them 7.
- Higher-tier changes: Second-tier specimens have substantially tougher beaks and claws, requiring stronger processing materials for Spirit Cuisine. Most third-tier chickens are nearly human height 226 342.
- Spiritual power: They absorb Spiritual Qi directly into their flesh rather than refining it into Law Power within a Dantian. Stored bodily spiritual power can substitute for Law Power to a limited extent 174.
- Lifespan: Wang Ba initially estimates a transformed low-grade chicken’s maximum lifespan at fifty-eight to sixty years. Higher-grade descendants substantially exceed this estimate 7 38 100.
- Intelligence: Many of Wang Ba’s chickens remain intellectually deficient even at the third tier, unlike ordinary spirit beasts developing self-awareness at that stage. Body-seized individuals are important exceptions 259 263.
Breeding and Husbandry
Origin and Bloodline Transformation
Daoist Jiao Hu describes Precious Chickens as the mundane chicken breed closest to Spirit Chickens. They can occasionally advance naturally through prolonged nourishment by Spiritual Qi; their ordinary transformed form remains a harmless meat chicken 16.
| Method | Requirements and Results |
|---|---|
| Natural nourishment | Spiritual Qi gradually transforms the body and bloodline from the outside inward. This normally takes a long time 16. |
| Lifespan deposition | Wang Ba deposits lifespan into Precious Chickens to trigger transformation. Extracting lifespan afterward does not reverse the change 7. |
| Daoist Jiao Hu’s formula | Each course uses one powdered middle-grade Spirit Stone, one jin of first-tier superior-grade Meridian-Passing Grass seeds, two jin of first-tier mid-grade Moonlight Liquid, and two liang of powdered Spirit Chicken gizzard lining. The book guarantees advancement within three courses 16. |
| Wang Ba’s cheaper trials | After spending thirty-two low-grade Spirit Stones and three gourds of Tendon-Cutting Nematodes, he produces two chickens nearing transformation. This provides a public explanation for his breeding success 23. |
| Second-tier breeding methods | Ten Thousand Beasts Office records describe special ingredients, its exclusive Nameless Formation, and nourishment from a second-tier Spirit Vein. Its middle-grade advancement instructions omit precise ingredient proportions 141. |
- Economic limitation: Jiao Hu’s formula is prohibitively expensive for ordinary low-grade production: its middle-grade Spirit Stone alone is worth one hundred low-grade stones 16.
- Bloodline selection: Chickens given the same treatment respond differently; Wang Ba interprets stronger Spiritual Qi development as evidence of richer bloodlines 23.
- Higher-grade parents: Better breeding stock generally produces offspring with stronger foundations, but willingness to mate and breeding success decline as grade rises 32 100.
- Mutation inheritance: Jia Nine’s beautiful male offspring proves that at least some mutant traits can be inherited 102.
Reproduction
- Crossbreeding with Precious Chickens: A Spirit Chicken rooster and Precious Chicken hen produce Jia Five, a forty-two-year-lifespan chick Wang Ba calls a “Half-Spirit Chicken” 12 17 18.
- Incubation difficulties: Jia Four’s three eggs take nearly two months to hatch. She repeatedly abandons them and must be driven back by Jia Five 32.
- Artificial insemination: The Primordial Yang Reversal Technique successfully fertilizes Precious Chicken eggs but initially has little effect on Spirit Chickens 88.
- Grade-dependent fertilization: During Jia Ten Five’s breeding activity, first-tier hens achieve about sixty percent fertilization, while second-tier low-grade hens fall below twenty percent 182.
- Selective breeding: After roughly three generations of selection, Wang Ba develops more than thirty willing male breeders. Each can mate with one or two hundred hens in a year 300.
- Third-tier bottleneck: At that point, third-tier reproduction still depends entirely on Jia Ten Five and Jia Seventeen 300.
- Sexual transformation: Jia Ten Five develops both reproductive systems and incubates fertilized eggs. Separately, Wang Ba’s Yin-Yang Union Incantation experiments induce male-like reproductive development in a hen 340 389.
Feed and Living Conditions
- Feed quality: Dingjiu Manor’s Spirit Chicken feed contains roughly three to four times the Spiritual Qi of Precious Chicken feed, along with additional herbs and minerals 52.
- Waste conversion: The breed can consume otherwise unusable waste pills and insects, gathering and purifying their Spiritual Qi 16.
- Routine care: Feeding, cleaning, illness checks, and egg collection remain necessary even though Spirit Chickens ordinarily do not become ill 52 53.
- Breeding environment: Wang Ba improves reproductive conditions by providing spacious grounds, woods, streams, grass, abundant food, and introduced spirit insects 300.
- Individual dietary limits: Snow Phoenix Chickens reject feed dropped on dirt and select crushed Spirit Stones while ignoring bran, fish bones, and insects 340.
Abilities and Uses
Spirit Cuisine
Spirit Chickens bred from Precious Chickens are valued for gentle nourishment and assistance with cultivation bottlenecks 16 225.
- Essence Blood: Eating their flesh strengthens Essence Blood and gradually improves the body 16 72.
- Bottleneck support: Prolonged consumption can help Qi Refining cultivators break through without medicinal-pill toxicity 16.
- Law Power and Yin Spirit Power: In one recorded cultivation session, a male chicken provides Wang Ba with five wisps of gaseous Law Power and two drops of Yin Spirit Power. These are results from his particular methods, not a universal yield 72.
- Digestive limits: Early in his cultivation, Wang Ba struggles to consume even one whole chicken. Improved physical cultivation increases both his digestion and retention of its Spiritual Qi 45 72.
Spirit Chicken Essence
Spirit Chicken Essence concentrates the benefits of large quantities of chickens into prepared Spirit Cuisine 225.
| Preparation | Documented Benefits and Limits |
|---|---|
| Ordinary Spirit Chicken Essence | Increases Law Power without pill toxins and can improve breakthrough chances by roughly ten or twenty percent 225. |
| Second-tier Spirit Chicken Essence | Nourishes Spiritual Qi, Essence, blood Qi, and the Divine Soul 226. |
| Second-tier high-grade preparation | May have a slight effect even on early Gold Core cultivators whose cores are below the fifth grade. Reliable ingredient production remains difficult 289. |
| Third-tier Spirit Chicken Essence | Helps Wang Ba accumulate the Law Power needed to reach late Foundation Establishment 300. |
| Phoenix Feather Chicken Essence | Developed for appearance-improving effects; its ingredients are limited to second-tier supreme grade at the time Wang Ba discusses the recipe with Ma Shengxu 300 302. |
Lifespan Resource
Wang Ba’s ability to deposit and extract lifespan makes Spirit Chicken husbandry a major source of cultivation resources.
- Permanent transformation: A chicken remains a Spirit Chicken after its deposited lifespan is withdrawn 7.
- Large-scale harvesting: Repeatedly transforming and draining chickens supplies lifespan for Wang Ba’s cultivation 9 24.
- Accumulated reserve: High-frequency breeding for Spirit Chicken Essence helps him save twenty thousand years of lifespan despite substantial expenditures 141.
Combat and Specialized Techniques
Ordinary meat chickens are not combat animals, but mutations and possessed individuals can acquire very different capabilities 16 38.
- Physical combat: Jia Seven gains enough strength and speed to crush pebbles, unlike her siblings 38.
- Spirit-beast techniques: After knowledge infusion, Jia Ten Five fires spiritually propelled feather arrows through the coop and strikes its third-tier formation 259.
- Cultivation adaptation: Jia Ten Five identifies chicken equivalents of human acupoints to practice a blood-Qi cultivation method 427.
- Bloodline stimulation: Spirit Chickens gather reverently beneath Er Ya’s Fire Paulownia, where their bloodlines become unusually active. Body-seized chickens do not display the same response 447.
Notable Varieties and Specimens
| Variety / Specimen | Distinguishing Traits |
|---|---|
| Ordinary meat chickens | Raised chiefly for food; advancement does not automatically grant combat ability 16 184. |
| Half-Spirit Chicken | Wang Ba’s designation for Jia Five, born from a Spirit Chicken rooster and Precious Chicken hen 18. |
| Phantom Chicken | Combat-capable variant; notable specimens include Jia Seven and the supreme-grade Jia Thirteen 38 102. |
| Phoenix Feather Chicken | Ornamental mutation with spectacular multicolored plumage. Jia Nine passes the trait to Jia Ten, prompting Wang Ba to name the variety 96 102. |
| White-Crowing Chicken | Can ward off evil 121. |
| Black Feather Chicken | Produced by crossing White-Crowing and Phoenix Feather Chickens. Can devour Yin Ghosts, but is naturally impotent and unable to mate 116 121 293 431. |
| Snow Phoenix Chicken | Apparent Snow Yang–Phoenix Feather hybrid with pale plumage and potent flames; two early specimens are third-tier low grade 340. |
| Jia Ten Five | Possessed by Lin Xiwen’s remnant soul. Becomes a key breeder, develops both reproductive systems, and continues cultivating through the fourth tier 174 300 340 427. |
| Jia Seventeen | Receives an incomplete Divine Soul, assists in refining Spirit Chicken Essence, and becomes another essential third-tier breeder 254 259 300. |
| Er Ya | Extraordinary offspring connected to Jia Ten Five and Fanming. Hatches at fourth-tier middle grade with multiple chicken-lineage traits and exceptionally strong Bing-Ding Fire; later stimulates nearby chickens’ bloodlines 431 447. |
History and Story Role
Wang Ba’s Early Livelihood
Spirit Chickens initially provide Wang Ba with food, market income, and extractable lifespan. His trade with Shopkeeper Lu lets him exchange one Spirit Chicken for numerous Precious Chickens, expanding the stock he can transform. Successfully demonstrating a cheaper breeding method also gives him a legitimate explanation for producing birds that would otherwise attract suspicion 9 10 23.
Market Trade
| Market Context | Recorded Price or Terms |
|---|---|
| Low-grade rooster | Three low-grade Spirit Stones 9 16. |
| Low-grade hen | Six low-grade Spirit Stones 16. |
| High-grade stock at Hundred Beasts Garden | Roosters: 150 low-grade Spirit Stones; hens: 230 66. |
| Yu Changchun’s feed agreement | Three Spirit Chickens each month in exchange for a reliable Chicken Feed supply 88. |
| Zhang Qingniu’s barter agreement | Monthly exchanges of Spirit Chickens for second-tier spirit grain bran and spirit wheat bran 139. |
Sales later decline as cultivators adopt faster Heavenly Gate Sect cultivation methods, and the market shop limits purchases to 150 chickens per month. During this period, Bu Chan’s Spirit Fields help support the household when chickens will not sell 118 338.
Heavenly Gate Sect and Fanming
The Heavenly Gate Sect pressures Wang Ba to breed increasingly powerful chickens capable of bearing Fanming’s Primordial Spirit. Bai Yu supplies materials but warns that failure could cost Wang Ba his life 141.
During the sect’s collapse, Lu Yuansheng uses a third-tier Spirit Chicken empowered by Fanming against Ning Daohuan. Its borrowed power fails, but Fanming later escapes inside a Black Spirit Chicken. Wang Ba subsequently discovers Fanming possessing Bing Yi and attempting to transfer into Jia Ten Five 221 395.
Later Applications
- Dao Seed incubation: Wang Ba implants the Moruo Colossal Elephant Dao Seed into a supreme fourth-tier chicken. The seed drains its vitality, leaving a withered body around a dark-purple embryo 548 551.
- High-tier beast provisions: Fourth-tier Spirit Chickens form the payment used to obtain fifty drops of essence blood from the Ghost-Eyed Chi Dragon 564.
- Battle against Man: Wang Ba releases chickens into the golden star to disrupt Man. After the first flock is killed, he releases more chickens alongside turtles, lizards, and Moruo Colossal Elephants 672.
