Background / History

Early Life and the Chicken Farm

Bu Chan descends from a cultivation lineage and was sent to the Eastern Saint Sect before meeting Wang Ba. At their first documented meeting, she is already a first-tier middle-grade spirit plant specialist. She introduces the practical skills of her fellow newly admitted cultivators and proposes cooperation with Wang Ba, whose specialty is raising spirit chickens 94.

She subsequently helps at his Chicken Farm, harvesting spirit fruit, tending fields, and feeding spirit beasts. Alongside this work, she cultivates at Spiritwater Courtyard and undertakes Free Missions 101 113.

Before their mission to Meng Xing Village, Bu Chan directly confesses that she wants to become Wang Ba's dao companion. Rather than demand an immediate answer, she urges him to let their relationship develop naturally and concentrate on surviving the mission 122. They later announce their agreement to become dao companions to Shen Fu, and she helps refurbish the Chicken Farm's living quarters 137 138.

Leaving the Heavenly Gate Sect's Territory

While Wang Ba travels between garrisons, Bu Chan continues maintaining the farm and producing supplies. She collects Hundred-Fragrance Bee wax for him despite severe stings to her hands. The deteriorating military situation makes Wang Ba fear that she will be conscripted to the front 185.

The pair endure a frightening separation before reuniting. When Wang Ba embraces her publicly with tears in his eyes, she shields his face from onlookers rather than expose his vulnerability 208 209. He later arranges for her and Shen Fu to leave ahead of him; they reunite in Canglan City before Shen Fu departs alone 213 219.

At White Cloud Flat, Bu Chan reaches Foundation Establishment and continues cultivating the Thousand-God Wood. Her careful management accelerates its production of Divine Essence Dew 226 227.

Rescue from Yuan Wenzhi

Concerned that Wang Ba is increasingly dealing with Gold Core cultivators, Bu Chan insists on learning defensive, restraining, and healing techniques. Although she initially struggles, she practices them repeatedly 241 252.

When Yuan Wenzhi carries off the immobilized Wang Ba, she intercepts him, seals his escape routes with talismans, and detonates two hundred Heavenly Thunder Seeds. She then charges through the blast to retrieve Wang Ba 252.

During the pursuit, she uses her body, spirit beasts, vines, and underground movement to protect him. Yuan's Large Brush Law Artifact pierces her chest, but she continues fleeing. When Wang Ba is wounded, she exhausts herself using the Life-Restoring Technique to heal him. He recovers in time to catch her as she collapses 252.

Motherhood and Life in the Myriad Phenomena Sect

During her recovery, Bu Chan learns that she is pregnant. Although she fears her child might lack the means to cultivate, she asks Wang Ba not to ruin himself purchasing costly prenatal improvements. He nevertheless chooses to pursue both spiritual-root cultivation and innate Qi-and-blood strengthening 256.

After joining Wang Ba at Myriad Laws Peak, she continues tending spirit fields throughout a pregnancy lasting nearly ten years. With his encouragement, she also begins taking flower-viewing excursions with Gu Wen 282 295 300 305. She gives birth shortly before Wang Ba leaves for a coastal patrol and proposes the names Yi'an and Six Jin for their son 312.

Wang Ba later publicly rejects a proposed marriage to Qin Lingxiao, affirming his existing marriage to Bu Chan. In the same period, Ma Shengxu accepts her as his seventh disciple and arranges her instruction around caring for her young child 338.

Bu Chan becomes a deacon and eventually Deputy Minister of the Spirit Plant Department. By the time she prepares for Nascent Soul, she is also the leading candidate for minister, though her aptitude delays her breakthrough despite extensive support from the sect and Wang Ba 354 437 548.

Later Cultivation

After successfully reaching Nascent Soul, Bu Chan remains closely involved with her family. She later welcomes Wang Yi'an's wife, Xuanwen, and discovers that she already has more than twenty grandchildren and a great-grandson 549 691.

Her cultivation eventually accelerates through the Nine-Colored Gourd Vine. Immortal blood stimulates its growth and brings her to the threshold of Spirit Transformation; a later mixture of Immortal Blood and Immortal Marrow Jade Liquid pushes her into Void Refinement 679 743.

In her latest documented appearance, Wang Ba gives her nine-colored divine soil for the vine. Recognizing his need to resume cultivation, she leaves for spirit-plant work at the Hundred Arts Academy without forcing him to explain his reluctance to part 833.

Appearance

  • Features: Fair skin, delicate hands, and almond-shaped eyes; later descriptions emphasize refined, graceful features and a composed, dignified bearing 94 584 691.
  • Figure: Described as neither plump nor thin 362.
  • Clothing and hairstyle: At her Foundation Establishment breakthrough, she wears a Cloud-Rising Bun, a Vermilion Long Skirt, and a Purple Gauze Overcoat. She is also shown in palace attire and plain cultivator clothing 226 249 619.
  • Mature appearance: Later scenes retain her blushing expressiveness while emphasizing greater mature charm 833.

Personality

Bu Chan combines gentleness with directness. Although she can become shy around Wang Ba, she boldly questions him at their first meeting and later initiates their romantic relationship. Her confession frames dao companionship as mutual support in cultivation, not an obligation to return her feelings 94 122.

She is observant and composed under pressure. Bai Yu notices her ability to remain calm despite his superior cultivation, while Wang Ba is surprised by how methodically she handles preparations during a crisis involving the Xuli Sect. He comes to recognize that her quiet support has concealed neither a lack of courage nor a lack of intelligence 128 232.

Years of insecurity make her industrious almost to a fault. Even after obtaining better cultivation conditions, she struggles to leave good fields unused or allow herself leisure. Her slow progress in learning combat techniques does not stop her from practicing them thousands of times 241 252 283 295.

As a mother, she is affectionate but strict. Wang Ba's frequent absences leave her handling much of Wang Yi'an's upbringing, and she readily reprimands his disrespectful remarks. Beneath that sternness, she listens warmly even when he explains tribulation knowledge she already possesses 341 400 549.

Her support for Wang Ba does not erase her fear for him. She encourages him to pursue difficult obligations, yet after his dangerous Spirit Transformation tribulation, she openly protests that the sect repeatedly sends him into mortal danger 338 584.

Abilities & Skills

Spirit Plant Cultivation

Bu Chan's principal specialty is growing and tending spirit plants, which also forms the basis of her cultivation 94 678.

  • Begins as a first-tier middle-grade spirit plant specialist 94.
  • Accelerates the Thousand-God Wood's Divine Essence Dew maturation by at least twenty percent 227.
  • Gains Law Power and advances through the growth of spirit plants 678.
  • Detects changes in plants that Wang Ba initially overlooks and assesses the Emperor Willow's improvement through direct examination 678.
  • Instructs other Spirit Plant Masters and serves in the Spirit Plant Department's leadership 400 437.

Cultivation Methods and Physique

  • Origin Wood True Method: Improves through her long work in spirit fields. Earth-vein nourishment strengthens her body until it approaches that of a body cultivator 146.
  • Millet Peak cultivation method: Taught by Ma Shengxu upon accepting her as his disciple 338.
  • Second Dantian: Cultivates one without substantially slowing the progress of her main Dantian 213.
  • Heaven-and-Earth Reversion Method: Practiced with Wang Ba to supplement cultivation; it also aids his study of the Yin-Yang Dao 446.

Defensive and Support Techniques

Wang Ba selects three second-tier techniques suited to her physique and metal, wood, and water Spiritual Roots 241.

Technique Function Demonstrated Use / Limitation
Stone-Copper Body Temporarily increases physical toughness. Protects much of her body while she charges through the Heavenly Thunder Seed explosion; uncovered portions of her arms are burned 241 252.
Ten Thousand Vines Technique Rapidly produces vines comparable to second-tier Law Artifacts for restraining opponents. Her early attempts produce only calf-high vines. During the rescue, she later uses vines to carry herself and Wang Ba 241 252.
Life-Restoring Technique Draws vitality from nearby living things to repair injuries. Drains surrounding greenery to heal Wang Ba, exhausting her until she collapses 241 252.

Nine-Colored Gourd Vine

The vine is Bu Chan's bonded spirit plant and becomes central to her later breakthroughs 743.

  • Its growth after absorbing immortal blood brings her to a Spirit Transformation Dao opportunity 679.
  • After absorbing Immortal Blood and Immortal Marrow Jade Liquid, it triggers her rapid rise to Void Refinement 743.
  • Its phantom within her Primordial Spirit withstands tribulation lightning after her crude emerald-green Dao Domain is shattered 743.
  • The lightning tempers both her Primordial Spirit and bonded plant 743.
  • Its roots are later planted in nine-colored divine soil, which can provide a hundred days of plant growth in one day 833.

Jadeite Emerald Pearl Burst Refinement

Bu Chan learns to refine these third-tier beads from Gu Wen, using materials supplied by her 312.

  • Their explosions obstruct Divine Sense rather than relying on great destructive force.
  • An unprepared Nascent Soul cultivator can suffer a momentary lapse.
  • High-grade materials make refinement difficult; Bu Chan spends two or three years producing the batch she gives Wang Ba 312.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Storage Bag, Storage Ring, and flying Law Artifact — Used for supplies, harvested crops, and travel 101 134 213.
  • Protective talismans and Law Artifacts — Wang Ba repeatedly equips her, including high-grade defenses before Meng Xing Village and first-tier supreme-grade artifacts with accessible second-tier talismans later 122 187.
  • Two hundred second-tier supreme-grade Heavenly Thunder Seeds — Purchased by Wang Ba and expended together during her ambush of Yuan Wenzhi 247 252.
  • Spirit Beast Bags — Carry protective beasts, including Jia Twelve and an Azurewater Spirit Turtle before Meng Xing Village; later used to deploy Boli and spirit turtles during the rescue 122 252.
  • Substitute Death Copper Coin — Originally given to Wang Ba by Shen Ying, then entrusted to Bu Chan with instructions to bathe it regularly in her Divine Soul 283.
  • Nine-colored divine soil — Given by Wang Ba to accelerate her bonded vine's growth and allow it to nourish her in return 833.

  • Wang Yi'an / Six Jin — Son. She chooses his names, manages much of his upbringing, and remains deeply concerned for his safety during his travels 312 400 409 485.
  • Ma Shengxu — Master. Accepts her as his seventh disciple, teaches Millet Peak's method, and helps her recover her cultivation after childbirth 338 341.
  • Shen Fu — Old friend and Wang Ba's junior brother. Shares meals and teasing exchanges with her; she wishes him well when he leaves to travel independently 101 137 219.

  • Boli — Mysterious Phoenix Parrot entrusted to her care. Intercepts Yuan Wenzhi's brush during the rescue, distressing Bu Chan when it is struck away 219 252.
  • Wang Qingyang — Wang Ba's disciple. Shares family gatherings with Bu Chan and reaches Nascent Soul alongside her 485 549.
  • Xuanwen — Daughter-in-law. Bu Chan warmly welcomes her and eagerly asks after the grandchildren 691.
