Appearance

  • Elderly appearance: Described as an old man wearing green robes 14.
  • Green hair: A recognizable feature when he arrives to join Spirit Hall 52.
  • Green gleam in his eyes: Appears when he becomes suspicious or angry 3 6.
  • Elder's attire: Later wears an Elder's Martial Soul Robe with green clothing 130.
  • Improved vitality: After consuming the Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, he reports feeling younger, with more abundant blood and vitality 73.

Personality

Dugu Bo is proud, suspicious, and notoriously sharp-tongued. He poisons Yu Xiaogang to test his claims of medical expertise and nearly clashes with Yue Guan when he suspects Spirit Hall wants his medicinal garden. His desire for independence initially leads him to declare that he will never join Spirit Hall 3 4.

His granddaughter is his clearest emotional vulnerability. Concern for Dugu Yan makes him reconsider Tang San's offer, seek help for her damaged cultivation, and restrain himself from killing Yu Xiaogang because doing so would destroy his relationship with her. Although often overbearing, he can set aside his temper and reason gently with her when necessary 4 15 24 26.

He is deeply loyal to people who have helped him. He protects Tang San's access to the immortal herbs, offers assistance beyond their original bargain, and joins Spirit Hall at his friend's invitation. His gratitude toward the Heaven Dou Imperial Family also survives his change of allegiance, prompting him to ask that their bloodline be spared 31 32 52.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorus Snake Martial Soul

Dugu Bo's Martial Soul produces powerful venom and allows him to assume an enormous emerald serpent form 32 130.

  • Releases green poisonous mist across enclosed rooms or large battlefield areas 57 130 136.
  • After the Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, produces more poison without losing toxicity 32.
  • Dissolves Yu Tianheng's lightning dragon into corrosive liquid, which kills soldiers struck by it 130.
  • Retains the same outward appearance after its herb-induced improvement 32.

Poison Mastery

Dugu Bo has spent decades studying poison and specializes in using it to overcome opponents with greater Soul Power 4 57.

  • Covert poisoning: Administers a colorless, odorless mixture of five poisons to test Tang San 4.
  • Incapacitation: Poisons the Clear Sky Sect's Third Elder, numbing his hands and bringing him down before he can reach Dugu Bo 57.
  • Sensory disruption: Poisons Level 97 Mighty Lion Douluo, causing double vision, numbness, and dulled senses that create an opening for Gui Mei 77.
  • Battlefield suppression: Uses poisonous mist to overwhelm Heaven Dou's forces at Jialing Pass 136.
  • Nonlethal harassment: Uses poison to humiliate Yu Xiaogang with gastrointestinal illness rather than kill him 24 25.

Medicine and Toxicology

Dugu Bo's medical knowledge lets him recognize the effectiveness of Tang San's antidote as soon as he takes it. He also identifies the dangers of incompatible Soul Beast toxins in Dugu Yan's cultivation 5 14.

  • Understands that different poisonous effects can provide varied applications without introducing incompatible venom sources 14.
  • Recognizes the feasibility of Tang San's mixed-poison method once its buffering and absorption principles are explained 25 26.
  • Keeps rare poisons and ingredients that Tang San cannot readily obtain elsewhere 24 26.
  • Initially lacks reliable knowledge of many immortal herbs and cannot safely consume or harvest all of them 5 31 32.

Poisonous Backlash and Treatment

The Jade Phosphorus Snake's poison harms its wielder and can afflict descendants. Dugu Bo's own poisoning had penetrated his marrow and tormented him for decades 4 5.

  • Tang San's treatment redirects the toxins into a Soul Bone rather than stripping away Dugu Bo's poison arts 5.
  • Before consuming the orchid, daily management takes nearly two hours; afterward, it takes about one hour 32.
  • The Soul Bone method remains temporary because its capacity will eventually reach a limit 32.
  • The orchid substantially reduces backlash but does not establish a permanent cure for the family's inherited Martial Soul flaw 32.
  • His poison cannot overcome Tang San's herb-enhanced poison immunity 25.

Poison God's Inheritance

Tang San retrieves the Poison God's power from the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well and transfers it to Dugu Bo, judging his poison mastery exceptionally suited to the divine position 143.

  • Grants access to the Poison God's inheritance and trials 143.
  • Motivates him to complete his trials quickly after witnessing Yue Guan's immediate progress with the Flower God's inheritance 143.
  • Does not yet establish him as the fully ascended Poison God 143.

Equipment & Resources

  • Soul Bone: Stores the toxins redirected through Tang San's treatment; its finite capacity remains a long-term concern 5 32.
  • Tang San's antidote: Prescribed once daily at midnight to support the transfer of toxins into the Soul Bone 5.
  • Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well medicinal garden: His secluded treasure ground in Sunset Forest, containing numerous rare and immortal herbs. He allows Tang San to collect the immortal herbs and later promises to keep others from obtaining them 4 5 31.
  • Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid: A gift from Tang San that he consumes to improve cultivation, vitality, and tolerance of his own poison 31 32 73.
  • Spirit Hall Elder Token: Issued by Tang San when Dugu Bo formally joins Spirit Hall 52.
  • Poison reserves: Supplies Tang San with difficult-to-find poisons while warning him about the dangers of Heaven Dou politics 26.

History

Meeting Tang San

At Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Dugu Bo rejects Yu Xiaogang's claim that he can cure the poisoning affecting him and Dugu Yan. He becomes especially hostile when Yu Xiaogang reveals knowledge of his secret medicinal garden. Tang San subsequently approaches with the same promise, accompanied by Yue Guan 3 4.

Tang San persuades him to visit the garden alone and accepts a poison test. Dugu Bo promises three tasks, provided they do not cross his bottom line, if Tang San cures both him and his granddaughter. He is then stunned when Tang San consumes two dangerous immortal herbs and survives immersion in the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 4.

After Tang San prepares effective medicine, Dugu Bo's distrust gives way to appreciation. He permits Tang San to take the garden's immortal herbs and returns to the academy with medicine for Dugu Yan 5 6.

Dugu Yan's Cultivation Crisis

Dugu Bo objects when Yu Xiaogang directs Dugu Yan to absorb a Man-Faced Spider Emperor, weakening her native venom and risking conflicts with future Soul Rings. He publicly challenges Yu Xiaogang's understanding of poison and demands that Dugu Yan withdraw from the remaining tournament matches. Her continued loyalty to her teacher prevents him from resolving the dispute by force 13 14 15.

When Tang San returns to Heaven Dou, Dugu Bo asks him to repair the damage caused by the incompatible toxins. Tang San proposes a workable mixed-poison method, and Dugu Bo persuades Dugu Yan to try it. By their later forest expedition, Dugu Bo confirms that her Martial Soul problem has been solved 24 25 26 95.

Joining Spirit Hall

Dugu Bo initially refuses factional membership because he fears losing his freedom. His friendship with Tang San nevertheless deepens: he safeguards the medicinal garden, receives the Eight-Petal Immortal Orchid, and accompanies Tang San to approach the Strength Clan 4 31 32.

After Tang San becomes Acting Pope, Dugu Bo formally joins Spirit Hall as an elder. Before accepting, he asks Tang San to preserve the Heaven Dou Imperial Family's line in recognition of their past kindness. Tang San reassures him and insists that Gui Mei treat him respectfully as a benefactor and friend 52.
