Background / History
Childhood and Godolkin University
During a family camping trip, nine-year-old Cate became annoyed with her younger brother and told him to “go away and never come back.” Her newly triggered power compelled him to obey, causing his disappearance and eventual death. Her parents subsequently confined her to her bedroom for nine years and required her to wear thick leather gloves to prevent further accidental contact 9.
Cate also began hearing nearby people’s thoughts, including her parents’ fear of her. The overwhelming noise made the outside world frightening and discouraged her from escaping. Indira Shetty eventually brought her to Godolkin University and supplied medication that silenced the thoughts, presenting herself as the person who could help Cate live normally 9 84.
At Godolkin, Cate remained isolated, wearing a hoodie, gloves, and noise-canceling headphones while reading psychology rather than participating in the surrounding displays of power. She initially hoped to graduate and prove to her parents that she was not a monster 25 125.
Becoming Lucian’s Accomplice
Lucian approached Cate through her interest in psychology, then challenged her belief that her powers made her monstrous. His comments about her gloves provoked a severe reaction, and he later found her hiding in an abandoned gym 27 28.
After witnessing Lucian defeat Luke, Cate connected with his stated fear of becoming a product controlled by Vought. She disclosed her childhood confinement, accepted his reassurance, and reciprocated his kiss. When Lucian threatened to kill Luke to prevent him from exposing his abilities, Cate intervened and agreed to alter Luke’s memories instead 29 30.
This was her first willing defiance of Shetty’s instructions. Lucian called them “accomplices,” and Cate adopted the term when saying goodbye 30 31.
Recovering Her Abilities
Lucian initially cultivated Cate’s attachment to obtain her psychic abilities, secretly beginning to copy them through physical contact. To conceal his intentions from her potential mind-reading, he altered his own memories so that he believed his pursuit of her was motivated by sincere affection 63 64 66.
As their relationship developed, Cate gained confidence using her power. After successfully calming a hospitalized Supe, she followed Lucian’s advice to reduce her medication; by a later counseling session, she was taking it only once every three days 70 82.
The medication was not simply stabilizing her powers: it suppressed her telepathy and weakened her memory manipulation. Lucian helped her recognize the returning “noise” as passive mind-reading and taught her to control it directly 64 84.
Shetty’s Betrayal and Departure
While practicing near Shetty’s office, Cate accidentally heard the dean planning to separate her from Lucian, eliminate him, and use Cate to control uncooperative Supes. Devastated, she waited for Lucian rather than confronting Shetty alone 121.
During their confrontation, Cate compelled Shetty to explain herself. Shetty admitted that she intended to isolate Cate emotionally and use her to force experimental subjects to cooperate with research into a virus that would kill Supes. She also admitted that her affection for Cate had been real, but that revenge for her husband and child had made everyone—including Cate and herself—expendable 123 124.
Cate chose to leave rather than kill Shetty. At Lucian’s request, she erased Shetty’s knowledge of the virus research. Unable to return to her former life at Godolkin after Lucian’s actions there, she declined his offer of a place in The Seven and accepted a job as his personal assistant 124 125.
Enhancement and Field Operations
Cate embraced their Long Island home, planning its furnishings, garden, and even a future nursery. However, she refused to remain merely protected at the villa. After seeing the extent of Lucian’s operations, she requested the enhancement serum so she could contribute rather than become a burden 130 131 132.
The injection triggered a traumatic psychic crisis, which Lucian contained with Mental Cage and Full-Dimensional Memory Manipulation. The successful transformation strengthened her body and gave her much firmer control over her commands 132.
Cate subsequently joined dangerous operations alongside Lucian and Annie. She was assigned to restrain members of Butcher’s group if they used Temporary Compound V, and later helped Lucian dismantle and replace Stormfront’s Nazi beliefs 135 138 143 152.
When Lucian disappeared in the blast that drove Homelander away, Cate forced A-Train to search for him despite Lucian’s earlier mental conditioning. After his rescue, she admitted that she had considered controlling the president and launching nuclear weapons at Homelander if Lucian had died 149.
Supe Affairs Bureau
As Lucian’s assistant, Cate relayed research updates, Supe registration figures, dangerous-subject assessments, and departmental funding requests 169.
Her childhood experience also motivated her to ask for schools where young Supes could learn to control their abilities instead of being confined or taken for experiments. Lucian instructed Neuman to prepare a program combining power training with ordinary education 172.
Cate later helped Lucian keep Godolkin unconscious and prevent him from projecting his consciousness into another body. After receiving V1, she remained among the powerful allies capable of maintaining order during Lucian’s absence, and said goodbye before his departure to another world 173 175 177.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Long, pale-blond hair and blue eyes 63 132.
- Early clothing: An oversized gray hoodie, thick black leather gloves, and large noise-canceling headphones. Her clothing and posture emphasize her desire to avoid contact 9 25.
- Later clothing: Her wardrobe includes a fitted black top and a fitted coat; she no longer consistently hides behind her earlier oversized clothing 152 177.
- Gloves: Initially an almost permanent barrier between herself and others. She gradually abandons them as her confidence and control improve 27 77 131.
Personality
Cate’s early behavior is shaped by guilt, prolonged confinement, and fear of hurting others. She is withdrawn, wary of attention, and deeply sensitive about her gloves. Despite knowing how destructive her power can be, she cannot bring herself to use it when Lucian initially challenges her to touch him 25 27 28.
Her need for reassurance develops into intense dependence on Lucian. His unexplained absences frighten her, and she asks him not to enter her life only to disappear again. She becomes fiercely jealous of Annie, interpreting their relationship as a threat and considering mental coercion against her 63 74 77 91.
Her growing confidence does not consistently produce restraint. Cate offers to control Lucian’s researchers to secure their loyalty and makes extreme retaliatory threats when she fears losing him. Her plan to launch nuclear weapons is an admission of intent, not an action she carries out 131 149 150.
Nevertheless, she retains compassion in specific circumstances. She cannot bring herself to kill Shetty even after learning the truth, and later advocates for children suffering the same confinement and fear she experienced 124 172.
Abilities & Skills
Mind Control and Behavioral Compulsion
Cate can impose commands that override a target’s behavior 28 63.
- Original trigger: Bare-skin contact combined with a command; gloves serve as a physical barrier 30 84.
- Applications: Inducing sleep, forcing answers, suppressing resistance, and controlling other Supes 70 124 173.
- Overriding conditioning: Compels A-Train to overcome Lucian’s earlier mind control and search the blast site 149.
- Post-enhancement precision: After her first serum injection, she reports that commands require explicit intent rather than activating accidentally 132.
- Post-V1 range: Can affect visible individuals or groups within a few dozen meters without physical contact 175.
Memory and Belief Manipulation
Her LV5 psychic ability includes all-dimensional memory manipulation 63.
- Replaces Luke’s memories of his confrontation with Lucian with a false training accident 30.
- Completely removes Shetty’s knowledge of the Supe-virus research 124.
- Works with Lucian to break down Stormfront’s entrenched Nazi beliefs and replace them with Marxist and Communist doctrine 152.
- Her earliest demonstrated memory alteration leaves her gasping, sweating, and physically drained 30.
Telepathy and Mental Control Techniques
Cate can hear thoughts without touching their source 64 84.
- Initially experiences surrounding thoughts as uncontrollable noise that causes headaches and interferes with sleep 64 84.
- Learns to close a visualized mental “door” to block unwanted input 84.
- Uncovers Shetty’s plans by accidentally hearing her thoughts while practicing nearby 121.
- A mental-prison function is listed among her LV5 abilities, although no separate use by Cate is described in the provided events 63.
Enhanced Physique
Cate’s physical enhancement develops alongside her psychic abilities 63 132 156 175.
- At LV2, possesses increased resistance to injury and slightly accelerated recovery 63.
- At LV3, her muscle tissue can stop a standard-caliber handgun bullet fired at close range 132.
- Eventually reaches Super Physique LV5 after V1 enhancement 175.
- Cannot fly during the operation against Stormfront and relies on Annie for aerial transport 143.
Limits and Psychic Resistance
- Shetty’s medication suppresses passive telepathy and weakens the depth and scope of memory manipulation 64.
- Lucian warns her against entering Stormfront’s mind alone because its entrenched Nazi ideology could resist control and contaminate her own thoughts. Their later successful intervention requires both of them working together 143 152.
- Her first enhancement-serum injection intensifies traumatic memories and nearly destabilizes her consciousness; Lucian intervenes psychically to complete the transformation safely 132.
Administrative Skills
- Handles Lucian’s calls, scheduling, and everyday matters as his personal assistant 125.
- Relays technical reports and operational requests between Lucian, Sister Sage, and Bureau departments 169.
- Cooks breakfast for Lucian after her initial enhancement 132.
