Background / History
Creation and upbringing
Vought created Homelander using Soldier Boy’s genes. Dr. Jonah Vogelbaum was responsible for his creation and occupied a paternal position in his early life, although he also feared him. Homelander did not learn that Soldier Boy was his biological father until Lucian revealed it 52 55 170.
Homelander grew up in a laboratory, observed through glass and rewarded with praise for completing tests. Staff showed him Soldier Boy’s promotional films, making the older hero an early idol. Once Homelander could control his powers, Vought placed him before cameras as a supposedly perfect protector 148 159 170.
Translucent’s disappearance
Homelander personally searched the neighborhood where Translucent’s tracking signal disappeared. Lucian attempted to divert him with a fabricated robbery report, but Homelander examined his vital signs and became suspicious. Lucian subsequently used a livestream to interrupt the confrontation without openly revealing his powers 18 19.
After the Deep recovered Translucent’s remains in a zinc box, Homelander treated the murder as an attack on himself. He overruled Madelyn Stillwell’s efforts to prioritize containment and public relations, insisting on pursuing the killer personally 32.
Becca, Madelyn, and Ryan
Mesmer’s photographs of Butcher’s group prompted Homelander to investigate Becca Butcher’s disappearance. Madelyn’s evasions led him to Vogelbaum, whom he questioned about whether he had a child 50 52 55.
Butcher later held Madelyn hostage with C4, intending to hurt Homelander through his attachment to her. Faced with conflicting accounts about his child, Homelander demanded to know whether Madelyn had genuinely cared about him. He snapped her neck when she pleaded for Teddy’s safety, then survived Butcher’s explosion unharmed and saved Butcher at the last moment 59 60.
Butcher subsequently discovered that Becca was alive and raising Ryan, Homelander’s son. Becca forced Homelander to release Butcher by threatening suicide and warning that she would tell Ryan he was responsible 84 87.
Struggle for control of the Seven
Homelander viewed Stormfront’s appointment without his approval as a challenge from Stan Edgar. He recruited Ashley as an informant, offering her a senior vice presidency while ordering her to report on management, recruitment, and publicity plans 92.
Lucian initially won his favor by expressing admiration without the fear Homelander habitually heard in other teammates. Encouraged by the team’s resistance to Edgar, Homelander declared the Seven his real family and denounced Vought as a company living off their fame. He then took control of Edgar’s proposed mission as a demonstration of the Seven’s unity 104 105.
Alliance with Stormfront
Public accusations of murder shattered Homelander’s attempt to address protesters, and he fled the gathering. Stormfront exploited the humiliation by using fabricated evidence, fake accounts, and memes to improve his approval ratings. Her acceptance of his violence drew him into an intimate relationship 115 119.
When Stormfront’s Nazi identity was exposed at a congressional hearing, Homelander considered stopping her attack to restore his heroic reputation but did not act. He carried her away and ultimately accepted her past after she assured him that she loved him. He then asked her to help raise Ryan as part of a family 126 127 129.
Defeat by Lucian
During the attempt to rescue Ryan, sonic emitters drew Homelander away from the safe house. He later intervened to protect Stormfront from Butcher, who had acquired Supe powers 136 141.
Butcher wounded Homelander with sustained Heat Vision and close-range attacks, but Homelander’s superior physique eventually overwhelmed him. Before Homelander could deliver the killing blow, Lucian intervened and challenged him 142 145 146.
Lucian’s Stellar Collapse nearly killed Homelander, leaving him extensively burned, internally injured, and temporarily unable to use Heat Vision. He escaped through unstable flight and concealed his condition rather than seek treatment, terrified that witnesses would discover his defeat 148 151.
Flight, depowerment, and Soldier Boy
After seeing evidence that Lucian and Soldier Boy were together, Homelander abandoned Vought Tower. Soldier Boy repeatedly tracked him through successive hideouts and eventually secured his return by warning that Lucian would otherwise come himself 159 169.
Homelander admitted to Lucian that what he wanted most was love, not fame or authority. Lucian revealed his parentage and ordered Soldier Boy to remove his powers so that he could experience ordinary life 170 171.
Afterward, Homelander begged Soldier Boy for a family. Soldier Boy responded harshly but did not abandon him, instead taking him to the Supe Affairs Bureau and promising to teach him from the basics. Homelander was subsequently assigned to help care for children with uncontrolled abilities 172 173.
Appearance
- Build and features: Tall and powerfully built, with blond hair, blue eyes, and a handsome face 32 58 92.
- Hero costume: A Stars and Stripes–themed suit, bright red cape, chest emblem, and leather boots 18 59 119.
- Heat Vision: His eyes glow red before firing, with sufficient heat to distort the surrounding air 19.
- After depowerment: Changes into an ordinary jacket and jeans, wearing a face mask after Soldier Boy orders him to abandon his costume 173.
Personality
Homelander carefully separates his public performance from his private behavior. He can switch from visible hostility to a camera-ready smile almost instantly and delivers convincing speeches about selfless protection. Privately, he regards ordinary people as inferior and resents being controlled by executives without powers 92 93 105.
His craving for love makes him vulnerable to manipulation. Madelyn’s reassurance and Stormfront’s acceptance both become substitutes for the unconditional affection he lacked while growing up. His wish to form a family with Ryan is sincere, but it coexists with possessiveness and contempt for Becca’s parenting 47 55 119 129.
Challenges to his supremacy provoke disproportionate anger, particularly when opponents damage his face or make him bleed. Defeat exposes an equally intense fear of humiliation: he refuses medical care to hide his injuries and later flees Vought rather than risk confronting Lucian and Soldier Boy together 142 146 151 159.
Abilities & Skills
Superhuman Strength and Durability
Before depowerment, Homelander’s physique surpassed both powered Butcher and Lucian in direct physical exchanges 142 146 147.
- Drives Butcher through a forest and into a mountainside, breaking bones despite his enhanced body 142.
- Survives the C4 explosion that levels Madelyn’s villa without injury 60.
- Injures Lucian’s internal organs through several layers of defensive abilities and protective equipment 147.
- Limits: Sustained Heat Vision burns through his skin; Stellar Collapse causes catastrophic injuries without killing him 142 148.
Flight and Speed
Homelander can hover, maneuver freely in the air, and accelerate beyond the speed of sound 18 146.
- Exceeds Mach 3 during his ground-level exchanges with Lucian 146.
- Destroys Lucian’s footing to force a fight into the air, where Lucian’s ground-based speed is less effective 147.
- Uses aerial mobility and repeated ranged attacks to gain the advantage over Soldier Boy 169.
Heat Vision
His signature attack projects destructive crimson beams from his eyes 108 142.
- Slices through reinforced concrete and bisects Black Noir II 108.
- Cuts glowing fissures through mountain rock, leaving molten trails 142.
- Limits: Lucian’s enhanced Heat Vision can overpower his beams; severe damage from Stellar Collapse temporarily prevents him from firing 146 148.
Enhanced Senses
Homelander combines superhuman hearing, smell, and X-ray vision to investigate targets and track opponents 18 147.
- Monitors heartbeat, breathing, and blood pressure for signs of deception 18 98.
- Detects internal injuries and a weakening heartbeat while standing over Butcher 145.
- Uses X-ray vision and hearing to compensate after Lucian temporarily blinds him 147.
- Limits: His readings can mislead him when a speaker’s technically truthful statements conceal their intentions, as Lucian demonstrates 104.
Combat Judgment
Homelander is less technically skilled than Butcher, but can exploit environmental and mobility advantages 145 147.
- Recognizes Lucian’s dependence on solid footing and deliberately collapses the slope beneath him 147.
- Adjusts his tactics against Soldier Boy by avoiding close combat and attacking from changing aerial positions 169.
- Limit: His superior physique often compensates for deficiencies in fighting technique rather than eliminating them 145.
