Chapters 51–75 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 51Taking three strikes

Anyo met White Fang at a Sunagakure outpost, where they fought three sword strikes before White Fang released the seal suppressing Anyo’s chakra. After returning to Konoha to rest, Anyo spotted Tsunade outside a gambling den and persuaded her to play cards.

  • Anyo reached a Sunagakure outpost just as White Fang attacked, and White Fang challenged him with his sword.
  • Anyo defended against White Fang’s strikes and used his Blade-Breaking Technique, but was knocked back after their blades clashed.
  • White Fang let Anyo survive, removed his Sunagakure forehead protector, and released the Sealing Jutsu that had suppressed his chakra.
  • White Fang told Anyo to rest in Konoha before heading toward the battlefield near Iwagakure, and Anyo warned him about Sunagakure’s puppets and poisons.
  • Anyo returned to Konoha and slept, then woke and realized he had little money left.
  • Anyo recognized Tsunade outside a gambling establishment and used her embarrassment to persuade her to play cards with him.

Ch. 52Losing his head over gambling, awakening the Sharingan

Anyo lost repeatedly to Tsunade at cards, Hanafuda, and mahjong, then discovered that the shock of losing had awakened his Two-Tomoe Sharingan. Tsunade learned he was Uchiha and agreed to keep his clan identity secret in exchange for another bottle of medicine, while Orochimaru called from outside that Tsunade’s little brother was missing.

  • Anyo lost two high-card rounds and a Hanafuda game to Tsunade, emptying his wallet.
  • Anyo wagered a bottle of poison on mahjong, but Tsunade won with a Heavenly Hand.
  • Tsunade noticed Anyo’s newly awakened Two-Tomoe Sharingan and realized he belonged to the Uchiha Clan.
  • Anyo offered Tsunade another bottle of medicine to keep his identity secret, and she accepted.
  • Orochimaru called from outside and told Tsunade that her little brother was gone.

Ch. 53War council

After her younger brother died in the war, Tsunade attended a meeting where the Third Hokage outlined Konoha’s losses and proposed organizing ninja into four-person squads. Tsunade called for medical specialists in every squad, and Dan supported her as the debate began.

  • Tsunade saw her younger brother’s body and took back the necklace Orochimaru had recovered; Orochimaru then summoned Anyo to attend the Hokage’s meeting.
  • Anyo arrived at the meeting, where the Third Hokage reported Konoha’s severe wartime losses and asked Anyo to present intelligence about other nations.
  • Anyo presented his intelligence, and the Third Hokage proposed forming four-person ninja squads led by Jonin.
  • Tsunade objected that each squad needed a medical specialist and urged Konoha to train medical ninja and establish a medical system.
  • Dan supported Tsunade’s request, saying Konoha should learn from the ninja who had already died.

Ch. 54Forced to learn

At a meeting, Anyo endorsed Tsunade’s plan to train more medical ninjas and develop a medical system, then was taken to the hospital and taught medical ninjutsu. Tsunade was impressed by his exceptional learning speed and ordered him to stay for intensive lessons, while Anyo remained unsure whether his teacher, White Fang, would let him pursue the work.

  • The Third Hokage asked Anyo for his opinion, and Anyo supported Tsunade’s proposal while explaining how trained medical ninjas could reduce Konoha’s losses in a prolonged war.
  • Anyo’s comment about Tsunade possibly dying angered her, and the Third Hokage ended the meeting before she could act.
  • After the other ninjas left, Tsunade carried Anyo to the hospital and made him observe her medical work.
  • Anyo quickly learned medical chakra techniques and helped remove foreign objects from a patient’s wounds, impressing Tsunade with his talent.
  • Tsunade asked whether Anyo would become a medical ninja, and he said the choice depended on whether White Fang would let him.
  • Tsunade ordered Anyo to stay at the hospital for the next few days and undergo intensive lessons.

Ch. 55Poison-making and antidotes

Anyo showed Tsunade two poisons from Sunagakure, and she identified one and developed an antidote for the other while immersing herself in research. After sharing breakfast and another day of medical work, Anyo proposed a combat role for medical ninja and demonstrated how the Chakra Scalpel could be used as a weapon, leaving Tsunade laughing.

  • Anyo explained that one poison came from two harmless flower buds, and Tsunade tasted it and identified its ingredients as bauhinia and mimosa.
  • Tsunade analyzed Anyo's mixture of five deadly venoms and produced a transparent antidote, then asked him for more poisons.
  • Tsunade researched antidotes through the night, and Anyo covered her with a blanket before she woke and joined him for breakfast.
  • Anyo and Tsunade returned to the hospital, where he argued that Konoha needed a comprehensive medical system and explained the obstacles to assigning medical ninja to squads.
  • Anyo proposed a combat system for medical ninja and used a Chakra Scalpel to sever the pathways in his own arm before healing himself, making Tsunade laugh.

Ch. 56Anyao's Summoning Beast

Anyo and Tsunade tested using medical ninjutsu to disable opponents and developed the idea of delivering poison gas at range. After inhaling a toxin during their research, Anyo summoned Katsuyu as his summoning beast and collapsed, leaving Tsunade to treat him while Katsuyu examined her new summoner.

  • Tsunade tested Anyo’s chakra scalpel technique on herself and confirmed that it could disable an opponent’s arm.
  • Anyo suggested using poison gas to let medical ninjas attack from a distance, and Tsunade recruited him to help research poisons.
  • Anyo accidentally inhaled a toxin, and Tsunade told him to deal with its effects himself.
  • Anyo persuaded Tsunade to let him sign her summoning scroll and choose Katsuyu as his summoning beast.
  • Anyo summoned Katsuyu, then lost consciousness; Tsunade caught him and treated him while Katsuyu examined her new summoner.

Ch. 57Becoming an Anbu

Anyo recovered from Tsunade’s poison experiments and continued studying toxins with her and Katsuyu. The Third Hokage promoted him to Anbu Squad Captain and sent him to the Iwagakure battlefield, where he left Tsunade without saying goodbye in person.

  • Anyo summoned Katsuyu, who explained that Tsunade had saved him, and told her he wanted to become someone like the First Hokage.
  • The Third Hokage summoned Anyo and said his intelligence work had earned him a promotion to Jonin and the ability to lead missions.
  • Anyo voiced his preference to remain with his teacher, then accepted the Third Hokage’s offer to join the Anbu.
  • The Third Hokage appointed Anyo Anbu Squad Captain and ordered him to lead a selected team to support the Iwagakure battlefield, leaving that night.
  • Anyo put on his Anbu mask, went to Tsunade’s office, and said goodbye before leaving; Tsunade opened the door after he was already gone.

Ch. 58The battlefield situation

Anyo’s Anbu squad attacked Iwagakure’s rear supply lines, but Katsuyu warned him that Tsunade and Jiraiya were trapped after an ambush. Anyo sent his squad to exploit a weakness elsewhere and went alone to draw Iwa ninja away, preparing to fight the ten pursuers.

  • Anyo led his ten-member Anbu squad on guerrilla strikes against Iwagakure’s rear, losing four members over half a month of operations.
  • Katsuyu told Anyo that Tsunade and Jiraiya were trapped in a mountain after their squad was ambushed, with Jiraiya gravely wounded.
  • Anyo ordered the remaining Anbu to attack a weakly defended target while he went alone to buy time for reinforcements to reach the Sannin.
  • Anyo found Iwa ninja bombarding the mountain, transformed into Jiraiya, and used a Fire Release attack to draw some of them away.
  • Anyo led ten pursuing Iwa ninja into the forest, released his disguise, and prepared to fight them with his Sharingan and short sword.

Ch. 59The weight of life

Anyo returned to the Logistics Outpost and found his squad caught in the destruction caused by a rampaging Five-Tails Jinchuriki. As Iwa ninja closed in and his wounded teammates urged him to leave them behind, Anyo chose to teach them Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags.

  • After confirming the Sannin had been rescued, Anyo flew toward the Logistics Outpost and found it burning as the transformed Five-Tails Jinchuriki rampaged through both sides’ forces.
  • Anyo used the Spirit Transformation Technique to locate his squad, then rescued four survivors and treated their worst injuries with medical ninjutsu and Katsuyu’s help.
  • An injured Anbu member explained that he had used his eye power to make the Jinchuriki go berserk, destroying Iwagakure’s largest logistics supply outpost.
  • Iwa ninja spotted Anyo’s low-flying group, and the surviving squad members urged him to abandon them while one Anbu member jumped off the Eagle Puppet to cover his escape.
  • Anyo released Katsuyu’s summoning, gave the wounded members explosive tags, and began teaching them Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags.

Ch. 60Three-Tomoe Sharingan

After his Anbu squad sacrificed themselves to destroy Iwagakure's supply bases, Anyo awakened his Three-Tomoe Sharingan and returned to Konoha. He reported to the Third Hokage, agreed to rest before joining White Fang at the Sunagakure front, and reunited with Kurenai Yuhi, ending the day invited to dinner at her home.

  • Anyo watched the Anbu squad use Mutually Multiplying Explosive Tags, and his Sharingan evolved into the Three-Tomoe Sharingan as he flew away.
  • The Anbu squad's final explosion devastated Iwagakure's supply depot, and the Tsuchikage berated the Five-Tails Jinchuriki after he reverted to human form.
  • Anyo returned to Konoha and gave the Third Hokage a detailed report, then asked to join his teacher at the Sunagakure front.
  • The Third Hokage ordered Anyo to rest in Konoha for three days before leaving for the battlefield.
  • Anyo met Kurenai Yuhi in the street, spent the day with her, and accepted Shinku's invitation to dinner.

Ch. 61The Sunagakure battlefield

Anyo left Konoha after studying genjutsu with Shinku and joined White Fang on the Sunagakure battlefield. He attacked an enemy base, shattered its barrier with Iaido, and left its defender bleeding as the fight began.

  • Shinku offered to teach Anyo genjutsu during his three days at the house, and Anyo improved his control of the Bringer-of-Darkness Technique.
  • Anyo left a bird-shaped puppet for Kurenai Yuhi before departing for his mission, and Shinku encouraged her to train so she could become a ninja.
  • Anyo reached White Fang’s base and explained that he feared the Uchiha Clan’s future and had felt lost without his teacher’s guidance.
  • White Fang gave Anyo a map of suspected enemy positions in Sunagakure, and Anyo set out alone to attack them.
  • Anyo struck the first enemy base with a Great Fireball Technique, then broke its barrier with an Iaido slash and wounded the defender.

Ch. 62Practicing with the Sharingan

Anyo wiped out a Sand Ninja outpost, then listened to White Fang’s advice and resolved to master his Sharingan. After three months of fighting and recovering from a near-fatal wound, he received White Fang’s signal to return and abandoned his next attack.

  • Anyo slaughtered the ninja at the outpost, using his sword techniques and the Bringer-of-Darkness Technique, and collapsed from exhaustion and injuries.
  • White Fang revealed that he had followed Anyo, urged him to use and master his Sharingan, and learned that Lady Tsunade had taught him Medical Ninjutsu.
  • White Fang promised to record Anyo’s military achievements and left, while Anyo continued fighting alone for three months.
  • A near-fatal wound awakened more of Anyo’s Sharingan potential, and he used its perception and genjutsu to gain an advantage in battle.
  • Anyo spotted White Fang’s mark on an eagle’s talon, inferred that he was being summoned back, and left the outpost without attacking.

Ch. 63The Softhearted White Fang

Anyo agreed to White Fang’s request to return the rescued Sand Ninja children to Sunagakure, despite discovering that their parents were his friend’s parents. After sneaking into the village, he reunited with Sasori, promised they would fight side by side one day, and accepted a puppet he could use to contact him.

  • White Fang asked Anyo to take the surviving children from the battlefield back to Sunagakure, explaining that the dying Puppeteers had pleaded for their safety.
  • Anyo recognized the dead Puppeteers as the parents of a friend he had made in Sunagakure, then agreed to transport the children after White Fang erased their memories.
  • Anyo carried the sleeping children inside a Wooden Ox, disguised himself as a Puppeteer, and entered Sunagakure through a secret passage.
  • Sasori recognized Anyo as Brother Kurotsuchi and rejoiced that he was alive, though he had been told Anyo died on the battlefield.
  • Anyo promised Sasori they would fight side by side when Sasori became a Ninja, and Sasori gave him a marked bird-shaped puppet to contact him.

Ch. 64Dan Katō's death

After Dan Katō died in battle, Anyo used the Spirit Transformation Technique to kill the Sand Ninja responsible and promised to protect Dan’s niece, Shizune. Tsunade took command of Konoha’s forces, and the chapter left the two armies facing off as Chiyo unleashed poisonous mist.

  • Sunagakure’s Third Kazekage called for a final decisive battle against Konoha after Chiyo rejected his peace plan and prepared deadly poisons.
  • Sunagakure’s poison attacks pushed Konoha back until the Iwagakure ninja withdrew, allowing the Third Hokage to stabilize the front with the Sannin.
  • Sand Ninja attacked Dan Katō while he used the Spirit Transformation Technique, and Tsunade could not save him; Dan asked Anyo to protect his niece, Shizune, before dying.
  • Anyo sent his soul after Dan’s killers and silently killed them, then returned to his body as Tsunade realized what he had done.
  • White Fang handed command to Tsunade, who accepted; when Chiyo attacked Konoha with poisonous mist, Tsunade challenged her over seeking revenge on the battlefield.

Ch. 65The end of the Second Shinobi World War

Tsunade and Konoha defeated Sunagakure’s forces, securing an armistice that brought the Second Shinobi World War to an end. As the Sannin returned through Amegakure, Anyo revealed that he had led the Anbu squad that destroyed Iwagakure’s Logistics Outpost.

  • Tsunade identified Chiyo’s poison gases and neutralized them with prepared pills, then proved Chiyo’s poisoned needles could not harm her.
  • Orochimaru ordered Konoha’s army to charge, and Ebizo persuaded Chiyo to retreat rather than risk Sunagakure’s forces in a direct fight.
  • The Third Kazekage offered an armistice near Sunagakure, Tsunade accepted, and Konoha’s victory ended the fighting on the remaining fronts.
  • Tsunade gave the peace agreement to White Fang and called Anyo to travel with her and the other Sannin through Amegakure.
  • Orochimaru asked who had led the Anbu raid on Iwagakure’s Logistics Outpost, and Anyo admitted that he had been the squad leader.

Ch. 66At last, the Rinnegan

After the war, Anyo recognized Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan in a cave and considered taking Nagato’s Rinnegan, but changed his plans when Jiraiya agreed to care for them. Anyo offered to take Konan to Konoha for training, leaving her future with the group undecided.

  • Jiraiya told Tsunade he might travel again because he believed he would meet the Person of Destiny.
  • Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan emerged from the cave to ask the Konoha ninja for food, and Anyo recognized them.
  • Yahiko asked to learn ninjutsu, and Jiraiya decided to stay and look after the three orphans.
  • Anyo revealed that he had met Yahiko and Konan before, while Nagato recoiled in fear at the sight of him.
  • Anyo decided not to pursue Nagato’s Rinnegan and offered to take Konan to Konoha for an education.

Ch. 67Taking Konan Away

Anyo persuaded Yahiko and Nagato to let Konan leave with him so he could train her, despite her distress at being separated from them. After taking her to town, he bought food and explained that he wanted her help in a future war, while Tsunade returned from gambling in a foul mood.

  • Anyo argued that Konan could escape hardship by leaving with him, and Yahiko and Nagato reluctantly urged her to go.
  • Konan tearfully left with Anyo, Tsunade, and Orochimaru while Jiraiya stayed behind with Yahiko and Nagato.
  • Anyo won money at the town casino and bought a large amount of food for the group.
  • Orochimaru asked why Anyo had chosen Konan, and Anyo said he wanted to train her to help him in a possible Third Shinobi World War.
  • Tsunade returned after losing money, saw that the food was gone, and smashed the table in anger.

Ch. 68Bringing Konan Home

Anyo brought Konan to Konoha after the war and arranged for her to live with him and attend the Ninja Academy. After reporting to the Third Hokage, he chose to recruit his own Anbu squad members.

  • Tsunade taught Anyo poison neutralization and Medical Ninjutsu while Konan listened, and Anyo promised Konan she would reunite with her friends once she could protect herself.
  • Anyo and Konan arrived in a jubilant Konoha, where he showed her the Ninja Academy and promised to teach her after she graduated.
  • Anyo gave Konan a home and arranged for her to begin attending academy classes the next day.
  • Anyo reported to the Third Hokage, who praised his wartime service and confirmed that Konan could become part of Konoha.
  • The Third Hokage offered to assign Anbu members to Anyo, but Anyo chose to recruit his own squad as the Anbu were reduced to five members per squad.

Ch. 69The two girls meet

Kurenai Yuhi met Anyo’s student Konan and offered to take her to the Ninja Academy. Anyo then began searching for Uchiha Mikoto, but found her home empty and decided to look for Uchiha Fugaku.

  • Kurenai Yuhi arrived at Anyo’s house and met Konan, who explained that she was Anyo’s student.
  • Anyo introduced Kurenai Yuhi as his Genjutsu teacher, and Kurenai warmly offered to help Konan at school.
  • Kurenai Yuhi volunteered to take Konan to the Ninja Academy, and Anyo gave her Konan’s identification tag.
  • Anyo set out to recruit Uchiha Mikoto and found his former home abandoned and in disrepair.
  • Anyo infiltrated the Uchiha Clan’s residence and found that Uchiha Mikoto’s house was empty.
  • Anyo found Uchiha Fugaku’s name among Mikoto’s books and notes and decided to visit his home.

Ch. 70Anyao vs. Fugaku

Anyo went to the Military Police Force headquarters to find Mikoto and recruit her into his Anbu squad. Fugaku intervened and fought Anyo, but Mikoto stopped them before either could land a fatal blow.

  • Anyo entered the Military Police Force headquarters by bringing a Sand Ninja prisoner to be locked up.
  • Anyo found Mikoto and asked her to join his Anbu squad, and she recognized him from years earlier.
  • Fugaku arrived and told Anyo that Mikoto would not be joining him.
  • Fugaku attacked Anyo with his Sharingan, and Anyo countered with a sword technique that threatened Fugaku's life.
  • Mikoto rushed between them, so Anyo withdrew his attack and Fugaku lowered his kunai.

Ch. 71Konoha-Style Swordsmanship

After Mikoto refused Anyo’s offer to join the Anbu, he asked White Fang for advice on finding a squad member and improving his skills. White Fang sent him to seek instruction from Heiye, a master of Konoha-Style Swordsmanship whose dangerous lessons had once permanently injured his child.

  • Mikoto told Anyo she would not join the Anbu because she and Fugaku were engaged and planned to start a family, and Anyo left the Police Force wishing her well.
  • Anyo visited White Fang at the Interrogation Department and asked for advice about finding Anbu squad members and choosing what to train.
  • White Fang criticized Anyo for dividing his attention among too many skills, then gave him his sword and told him to seek out Heiye.
  • Anyo brought White Fang’s sword to the Third Hokage, who warned him that Heiye’s swordsmanship instruction was dangerous and had once badly injured his own child.
  • Anyo insisted he could handle the risks, and the Third Hokage agreed to notify Heiye as Anyo waited at the training ground in Konoha Forest.

Ch. 72A contest of swordsmanship

Anyo faced Heiye in a fierce swordsmanship duel, countering his secret techniques before Heiye vanished into the darkness. Afterward, Anyo discovered that Gekko Hayate and Uzuki Yugao had watched the fight, and Hayate asked his name.

  • Anyo waited at the training ground until Heiye ambushed him with Konoha Style: Dance of the Crescent Moon, but Anyo evaded the attack.
  • Heiye used Secret technique: Moon Shadow, and Anyo met his sword with the Dancing Blade Technique.
  • Heiye unleashed Secret technique: Night of the Hazy Moon, but Anyo destroyed the phantom blades with his Blade-Breaking Technique.
  • Anyo began an Iaido counterattack, but Heiye disappeared into the darkness and said they could continue tomorrow.
  • Anyo called out two hidden children, and Gekko Hayate introduced himself and Uzuki Yugao before asking Anyo's name.

Ch. 73Transparent Release

Anyo used Genjutsu to learn that Heiye's Kekkei Genkai was Transparent Release, then agreed to teach Gekko Hayate and Yugao swordsmanship. He began testing their foundations by demonstrating a technique that resembled Dance of the Crescent Moon and setting them a sword-striking challenge.

  • Gekko Hayate asked Anyo to teach him and Yugao swordsmanship, and Anyo asked how Heiye had disappeared.
  • Anyo used Genjutsu to make Gekko Hayate reveal that Heiye's Kekkei Genkai was Transparent Release.
  • Yugao confronted Anyo, then agreed to let him teach them after he promised to release the Genjutsu and keep Hayate unaware of what had happened.
  • Anyo released the Genjutsu and told the two children he would stop teaching them if they lacked the talent to master the basics.
  • Anyo demonstrated a sword attack that resembled Dance of the Crescent Moon, then challenged them to strike three marks on the training dummy within three seconds.
  • Gekko Hayate picked up a Wooden Sword and charged at the training dummy, determined to pass Anyo's test.

Ch. 74A blade for killing

Anyo developed the idea of a sword technique that could block all five senses after studying Heiye’s swordsmanship, then got White Fang’s permission to test his skills on prisoners. He entered a chamber holding more than a hundred disgraced ninja and killed the first one to attack him.

  • Anyo treated Gekko Hayate after he overtrained, then told him and Yugao to practice for a week before he judged their progress.
  • Anyo analyzed Heiye’s swordsmanship and resolved to develop techniques that could block an opponent’s five senses.
  • Anyo visited White Fang and explained that he wanted to create a sword technique for perfect one-hit kills.
  • White Fang gave Anyo a key and warned him not to underestimate his opponents.
  • Anyo entered the underground chamber of imprisoned ninja, offered them a chance to escape by defeating him, and killed the first attacker.

Ch. 75Illusion Blade Technique

Anyo developed the Illusion Blade Technique after a night of killing prisoners, prompting White Fang to direct him toward a genjutsu expert who could help him overcome its remaining weakness. Before he could seek that instruction, Kurenai Yuhi asked him to take her to his house so she could walk to school with Konan.

  • White Fang and Yamanaka Ertian discovered that Anyo had killed most of the prisoners, and the surviving prisoners begged to be taken away from him.
  • Anyo explained that he had developed the Illusion Blade Technique to block sight and hearing, but still needed a way to defeat an opponent’s sense of touch.
  • White Fang suggested that a genjutsu specialist who could create a Genjutsu Space might teach Anyo how to overcome that limitation.
  • Anyo burned and buried the bodies, then set off to find the genjutsu specialist.
  • Kurenai Yuhi mistook Anyo’s arrival for an offer to escort her to school and asked him to take her to his house so she could go with Konan.
  • Kurenai Yuhi told Anyo that Konan had become popular at school by folding paper cranes and had made her a paper flower.
