Background / History

Shi Xuan pursued immortality because he loved Xianxia, sought freedom and ease, and feared death. He inherited one thousand taels of silver and the possessions of Old Daoist Xu, but recognized that wealth, companions, Dharma, and land were all necessary for cultivating the Dao. 2

Though he was not formally Old Daoist Xu's disciple, Shi Xuan regarded the old Daoist's care for Du Bai as a debt of kindness. Since he chiefly cultivated the Treasury Records rather than the Returning to Truth Scripture, he intended to find a worthy successor for Old Daoist Xu's lineage. 3 14

After developing his martial arts and talisman craft, Shi Xuan travelled in search of cultivation opportunities. He eventually joined the Penglai Sect and became the disciple of Grandmaster Mo Yuan. 149

His early reputation was built on exceptional swordsmanship. By the Spirit Soul Stage, he was widely known as the foremost sword expert below Golden Core; Yu Ruoshui also described him as the Penglai Sect genius who advanced to Spirit Soul in less than twenty years and subdued ten thousand demons with one sword. 206 207

Shi Xuan is practical, cautious, and determined. He plans carefully, conceals his identity when necessary, and avoids taking risks without preparation; however, he also recognizes that the pursuit of the Great Dao sometimes requires decisive action despite the possibility of death. 2 167 352

He values freedom and longevity above worldly status. Although he served as First Seat of Tian Shu Peak, he regarded the position as burdensome and did not seek to reclaim it after attaining high-grade Golden Core. 141 283

His outward demeanor is calm, approachable, and humble even after becoming powerful. He treats allies respectfully, guides juniors patiently, and shares cultivation knowledge, yet remains ruthless toward enemies who threaten him or obstruct his path. 141 241 325
