Background / History

Original Soldier Boy

The original Soldier Boy was a celebrated superhero of an earlier generation and a figure publicly associated with World War II. His appearance remained unchanged across decades 118 217 251.

In 1980, he provided a sample for a genetics study arranged by Edgar. A child carrying his genes—Homelander—was born the following year without his knowledge. Three years later, Vought arranged his betrayal during a mission in Nicaragua, handing him over to the Soviets with his teammates’ involvement 6.

He subsequently endured forty years of experimentation, including sulfuric acid applied to his eyes and an AK fired into his mouth. These experiments produced his Nuclear Chest Blast 6 150.

His former teammates also remembered him as an abusive leader. Black Noir described losing an acting opportunity because of him, enduring beatings and death threats, and being forced to hide behind a mask. Noir believed Soldier Boy feared being surpassed 54.

Transmigration and Return

The current Soldier Boy is a different consciousness who inherited the original owner’s memories. After escaping the Russian military base, he traveled to New York, where the Old Popsicle System fully activated as he approached the city 2 6.

His knowledge of The Boys allowed him to identify his arrival as occurring before the original story’s opening episode. He chose to intervene before Homelander’s deterioration became irreversible, regarding the man’s abusive upbringing as an explanation for—but not an excuse for—his behavior 2 3.

Appearance

  • Face: Exceptionally handsome, with rugged, roguish features likened to a superhero stepping out of a poster from the previous century 3 11.
  • Eyes: Pale blue; Homelander immediately notices their resemblance to his own 3 4.
  • Build: Tall and broad-backed, with a physical presence that Homelander comes to associate with security 17 20.
  • Bearing: Intimidating and openly contemptuous, without the nervousness most people display around Homelander 5.
  • Signature clothing: A classic green combat suit, which he privately dislikes but considers preferable to Homelander’s proposed replacement 54.

Personality

Soldier Boy is foul-mouthed, provocative, and quick to use violence. He insults Homelander during their first public meeting, lashes out at reporters, and humiliates opponents through both physical force and verbal abuse. He is considerably less concerned with preserving a polished public image than Homelander 4 5 42 182 252.

His treatment of Homelander combines mockery with genuine protection. He deliberately supplies the affection and dependable support missing from Homelander’s childhood, while recognizing that lasting change requires patience, restraint, empathy, and responsibility. He measures early progress not by sudden kindness, but by Homelander learning to consider another person’s feelings before acting 12 22 87.

His morality remains selective and frequently brutal. He kills abusive researchers in front of Homelander and later approves Homelander’s killing of a man whose crime did not warrant death, reasoning that someone who disregards another person’s life forfeits the same respect. His attempt to create better superheroes does not amount to a commitment to nonviolence or legal restraint 17 190.

Nevertheless, he increasingly accepts responsibility for harms connected to his family and position. He cannot dismiss Mother’s Milk’s suffering as an inconvenience, tries to compensate Butcher, and begins considering rules that would let ordinary people and Supes coexist more equally 156 207 208.

Abilities & Skills

Superhuman Strength and Combat Skill

His strength reaches Level 8, supported by extensive fighting experience and precise control over the force of individual blows 120 173.

  • Breaks A-Train’s leg and catches Queen Maeve’s punch before throwing her through a storefront window 9.
  • Stops Kenji’s speedboat escape and throws the boat away 94.
  • Defeats Bombsight in a short, forceful exchange, sending him more than a hundred meters with an initial strike 209.
  • Uses dirt in Homelander’s eyes, an off-balancing kick, and a pin to win a sparring match rather than relying solely on raw power 222.
  • Can prolong an interrogation by keeping his strikes below an opponent’s fatal threshold, as demonstrated against Raymond 173.

Super Durability and Healing

His durability rises from Level 7 to Level 8, while his documented healing rank is Level 5 2 120.

  • Initially withstands Homelander’s Heat Vision at approximately seventy percent power with only reddened skin and mild pain 5.
  • Takes Kenji’s telekinetically propelled debris directly to his face; a metal fragment striking his eye causes little more than itching 93.
  • Later suffers a muscle-deep wound from the upgraded Homelander’s Heat Vision, but heals completely within a short time 222.
  • Is not invulnerable: Homelander’s enhanced strength can hurt him, and his Heat Vision can breach his defenses 221 222 266.
  • Becomes vulnerable to broken bones and ordinary falls while his powers are suppressed 279.

Nuclear Chest Blast

Also called the Chest Beam, this ability releases concentrated energy from his chest. It serves both as a destructive weapon and a means of stripping Supes of their powers 68 117 150.

  • At Level 6, a single blast levels approximately one-third of a campus and nearly wipes out a large group of hostile Supes 68.
  • With intense concentration, he can reduce its destructive spread enough to use it indoors without the large-scale devastation others expect 150.
  • Requires charging and, after the campus blast, approximately ten-plus minutes before another use 68.
  • Sustained full-power output has a limit of roughly two and a half minutes and leaves him severely weakened 248.
  • Does not remove the Super Fish Jerry’s abilities, establishing a limit to its power-nullifying effect 268.
  • A copied version wielded by Gideon can suppress Soldier Boy’s own powers, though he suspects his mutations provide partial resistance 274 278.

Mobility and Vision

  • Super Speed: Reaches Level 2 after a system reward, correcting an initial weakness that left him only slightly faster than an ordinary person 24.
  • Super Flight: Begins at Level 1, with a 250-kilometer-per-hour limit; later becomes fast enough to break the sound barrier 51 209.
  • Super Vision: Awakens at Level 1 through a card and functions as a toggleable active skill 212.
  • Limit: Even after acquiring flight, his travel speed remains a recurring source of frustration compared with Homelander’s 120 135.

Physical Immortality

His Level 3 physical immortality is associated with Original Compound V. His unchanged appearance across decades distinguishes him from Homelander before the latter receives the original compound 51 217 220.

  • Preserves his youthful appearance despite the decades since his disappearance 217.
  • Does not prevent injury or the temporary suppression of his other powers 222 278 279.

Old Popsicle System

The system supplies ranked assessments, missions, rewards, an inventory, and an exchange shop 2 11 24.

  • Exchange Points: Purchase items and services, including ability upgrades, Compound V variants, and ability tests 11.
  • Stat inspection: Reveals another character’s abilities for ten Exchange Points 24 51 143 266.
  • Special rewards: Certain mission rewards can raise an ability by two levels and cannot be purchased in the shop 12.
  • Training rewards: Helping Ryan awaken a superpower triggers a random reward 135.
  • Reliability limit: The system later stops responding to his calls, although he can still access some panel functions 220 222 303.

Foreknowledge

His familiarity with the original story helps him identify hidden relationships, impending incidents, and useful recruits 3 84 85 112 128.

  • Recognizes Butcher from his language before Homelander identifies him 84 85.
  • Locates the laboratory connected to Homelander’s childhood without taking a detour 85.
  • Uses knowledge of Ryan’s original power awakening to devise pressure-based training 135 137.
  • Cannot assume events will unfold unchanged: Butcher still discovers Compound V despite major alterations to the timeline 85 116.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Green combat suit — His established costume. He retrieves it largely to avoid wearing Homelander’s red, white, and blue father-and-son branding design 52 53 54.
  • Shield — Used to block repeated attacks until it shatters during the Red V confrontation. Homelander repairs it, but Kenji’s projectiles later break it along the welded seams 68 69 93.
  • Cigars, cigarettes, and liquor — Regular personal possessions. Frenchie, Kimiko, and Kenji provoke his anger by stealing his whiskey and cigars 6 125.
  • System cards — Consumable rewards and purchases used to upgrade existing abilities or awaken new ones, including super vision 24 120 212.

Relationships

  • Homelander / John — Son of the original Soldier Boy and the central focus of the transmigrator’s efforts. Soldier Boy protects him, challenges his behavior, and publicly acknowledges their blood relationship during a crisis. Homelander develops deep trust and dependence on him 6 22 40 119 251.
  • Ryan — Grandson and trainee. Soldier Boy helps awaken his durability and flight through frightening, pressure-based exercises, then proposes wilderness survival to stimulate further powers 75 135 136 139 140.
  • Private Angel — Close companion and intimate partner. She advises him about Homelander and Original Compound V, heals his injuries during his power loss, and negotiates two days with him as payment for treating A-Train and Maeve 213 279 315.
  • Black Noir — Former victim of the original Soldier Boy’s abuse. The current occupant asks Homelander to spare him and later allows him to pursue acting while remaining available for Seven missions 8 54 125.
  • Stormfront / Clara — The original owner’s former romantic attachment. The current Soldier Boy rejects her attempts to recruit Homelander into Nazi world-domination plans and warns her against treating his son as a tool 25 26 60.
  • Ashley Barrett — Vought executive whom he refuses to abandon after Lucas imprisons her. He and Homelander break her out, earning her renewed loyalty 285 293.
  • Hughie Campbell and Robin — Protects Robin by disabling and warning A-Train. Later rescues Hughie from an assault and offers him employment at Vought 9 114.
  • Billy Butcher — Adversarial contact whose suffering he nevertheless recognizes. Offers compensation and urges him to rebuild his life with Becca rather than attempt to take Ryan from Homelander 182 207 208.
  • Mother’s Milk — Holds him responsible for his grandfather’s death and the resulting destruction of his family. Soldier Boy does not remember the incident and struggles to respond to the consequences inherited with his body 154 156.
  • The Deep — Subordinate who fears his punishments. Soldier Boy disciplines him for mistreating Starlight and Ryan, and later uses his command over marine life during the Super Fish investigation 231 254.
  • Bombsight — Old associate of the original Soldier Boy. Their reunion begins with a mistaken fight before recognition leads to reconciliation 209 210.
  • Edgar — Corporate opponent implicated in the original Soldier Boy’s betrayal. Soldier Boy forces concessions from him and states an intention to kill him 6 20 26.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Reclaiming a Place at Vought

After returning to New York, Soldier Boy confronts Homelander and reveals their biological connection. He also prevents Robin’s death by injuring A-Train and warning him away from Hughie and his girlfriend 5 6 9.

He attacks the laboratory responsible for Homelander’s childhood abuse, allowing Homelander to experience someone taking his side against his tormentors. He then confronts Vought’s leadership, demanding control of The Seven and ten percent of the company’s shares. Edgar agrees to the share demand, and Soldier Boy is subsequently announced as the team’s deputy leader 15 17 20 29.

Redirecting Homelander

Soldier Boy’s influence produces early acts of restraint: Homelander spares the mayor and his son, refrains from attacking Blindspot, and increasingly weighs his father’s judgment before committing violence 33 87.

Following the airplane rescue, Soldier Boy reassures him that saving more than a hundred people matters despite the incident’s failures. He accompanies him to the press conference and presents rescue footage in his defense 40 42.

A later public crisis tests whether Homelander will revert to indiscriminate violence. Soldier Boy prepares to depower him if necessary, but Homelander withdraws his Heat Vision. Soldier Boy then steps forward and reveals their father-son relationship to give Vought’s public-relations team a way to respond 117 118 119.

Training Ryan and Confronting Inherited Harm

Soldier Boy takes responsibility for Ryan’s power development, using intense fear and physical danger to trigger dormant abilities. His methods awaken durability and flight, while Black Noir later assists with a wilderness-training plan involving supernatural stories and dangerous animals 135 136 139 154.

At the same time, encounters with Black Noir and Mother’s Milk expose damage caused by the original owner. Soldier Boy restores Noir’s freedom to pursue acting but finds Mother’s Milk’s grief much harder to resolve 54 125 154 156.

Rules for Supes

Butcher’s forced compromises lead Soldier Boy to consider the structural imbalance between ordinary people and Supes. He conceives an order intended to make their coexistence more equal and later discusses his proposed Supe Act with Private Angel 208 213.

He also challenges The Seven to define themselves as people rather than merely collections of powers. By the announcement of the Sword of Damocles Project, he and Homelander regard it as a shared undertaking worth defending against rogue Supes 215 226.

Super Fish and Gideon

The Super Fish investigation takes Soldier Boy and Homelander into a frozen ocean environment, where they confront Jerry, an enormously powerful octopus. Soldier Boy discovers that his Chest Beam cannot remove the creature’s powers 266 267 268.

Later, Gideon copies the Nuclear Chest Blast inside Vought Tower. Soldier Boy forces him outside to protect the building and its occupants, but their mutual blasts suppress both combatants’ abilities. Soldier Boy returns to the tower effectively powerless and requires Private Angel’s healing after a fall 274 278 279.

Ashley’s Rescue and Renewed Conflict

When Lucas imprisons Ashley, Soldier Boy rejects the team’s cautious approach. His anger restores his abilities through the Will of the Tyrant, and he declares that he would act for any imprisoned teammate 285.

Homelander joins him at the White House, where they free Ashley despite the resulting confrontation with federal authority. Soldier Boy later remains active in combat, using his Chest Beam against a regenerating shadow controlled by a black-robed enemy 292 293 294 310.
