Background / History
Childhood and the prophecy
Chloe was the youngest daughter of Altia’s emperor. Until age nine, she enjoyed an affectionate childhood with her parents and three elder brothers. A prophecy declaring that she would become an empress who united humanity transformed her position at court: her father began preparing her to inherit, replacing cultural lessons with military studies, swordsmanship, psionics, statecraft, and history 16.
Her brothers consequently treated her as a succession rival. Her mother appointed loyal knights, including Ymir, to protect her through dozens of assassination attempts. These attacks gradually made Chloe withdrawn, suspicious, and increasingly convinced that the prophecy defined her destiny 16.
When Chloe was sixteen, her dying mother revealed that she had been poisoned but refused to name the culprit. To protect Chloe, she arranged an engagement to the border marquis’s son, allowing Chloe to appear to abandon the succession struggle. Chloe accepted on the condition that, at eighteen, she would receive an elite escort into Death Forest. If she found no extraordinary opportunity there, she would return and marry 16.
Alliance with the Swarm
Chloe initially approached Zhang Han as a powerful magical beast she hoped to subdue. Her enhanced mind control failed, but their Mental Contract gave her an opportunity to claim that she had secured a mighty ally. Her knights’ ensuing submission reinforced her confidence in the prophecy 13 14.
Her attachment to the Swarm soon became personal. A Zergling’s sacrifice to protect a knight exposed her to its pain, courage, and determination through their mental link. After another disastrous hunt, a Hydralisk comforted her, and she began thinking of the Swarm as her family rather than merely a military resource 14 18.
As Executor, Chloe organized hunts, gathered biomass and biological abilities, expanded creep, and supported the Hatchery’s development while Zhang Han slept. She worked almost continuously and sought comfort beside his cocoon when lonely 20 28 52.
Defense against the Beast Tide
Facing a Beast Tide that exceeded her command capacity, Chloe studied archived Swarm battles and connected directly to the Level Two Hive’s brain. She developed layered defenses around Creep Tumors, launched flanking attacks, and used the Hive Mind’s coordination support to control a much larger army 30 31 32.
She allowed Stars to receive Neural Thorns and share command despite fearing that Stars might become more important than her. Their combined forces mounted a two-direction counterattack that inflicted at least 8,000 casualties. Chloe also helped assess experimental organisms during the development of the Venomspider 33 42.
After awakening, Zhang Han disconnected Chloe from the main network to preserve her independence. The resulting loss of shared perception and companionship devastated her. He offered a separate network, troops, and support for her ambitions, but Chloe increasingly treated the conquest of humanity as a mission through which she could earn her return to the Swarm 54 57.
Conquest of the human nations
Chloe returned to the Border Marquisate with the Swarm and imposed her authority over its nobles. She then captured Warrior Fortress, compelled Duke to surrender, and used the victory to attract western nobles, soldiers, and supplies to her cause 62 68 79.
She challenged Robert’s claim to the throne and refused George’s offer of a negotiated entry into the capital. After George’s apparent surrender initiative became an assassination attempt, she ordered the execution of the envoy’s accompanying party. Her subsequent anger also led her to destroy an enemy army without preserving valuable prisoners or winning over General Heinrich—a mistake she later recognized 79 103 104 109.
Chloe was crowned Queen of Altia and continued the campaign against Arthur’s Eastern Territory. She subsequently gained the submission of the Krolan Republic, whose legislators promoted a fabricated savior narrative to legitimize her rule. She had not commissioned the story but allowed it to proceed as a means of stabilization 124 125 147 156.
Against the Astrologers’ Association, Chloe used aerial reconnaissance, human armies as bait, and concealed Warrior Bugs to execute an encirclement. She later chose a decisive offensive into Highlander territory, where local support strengthened her position 157 160 168 172.
After the Association’s defeat, she helped retrieve data from its buried colony ship, became the Highlanders’ Great Khan, and marched against the Auklai Empire. Kamu persuaded her that uniting humanity mattered more than personally killing George. Her coronation as empress followed shortly after her nineteenth birthday 184 190 191 192 193.
Return to the Swarm
An exploding statue severely wounded Chloe after her attempt to contain the blast instead turned its fragments into lethal shrapnel. Kamu brought her to the core Hatchery for treatment 196.
Zhang Han welcomed her into the Swarm and assigned her responsibility for the evolving Hatchery on Tabi Star and the unification of the Human Kingdom. Working with Isha, Chloe chose a Mimic-based transformation rather than the genetic ascension used for Stars 197.
After her enhancements were complete, Chloe returned to Nishang. She supported the developing faith around the Four-Winged Dragon God, supervised Typhon’s assignments, and continued building a unified empire for the Overmind 218 231.
When the Overmind’s consciousness required reconstruction, Chloe connected herself to the Giant Cerebrate to help splice its fragments. She discovered an intimate memory from Zhang Han’s mortal life and decided to keep it secret 240 241.
Interstellar campaigns
Chloe entered her first space battle while still learning basic fleet compositions and unit statistics. Zair’s maneuvering exposed her inexperience, and frustration worsened her mistakes. Her fleet-scale psionic empowerment ultimately turned the engagement into a rout of Zair’s forces 319 320.
During later operations, Chloe accepted Stars’s apology for their earlier feud and emphasized the trust necessary between Swarm Nodes. They coordinated operations against Zagara’s forces, including the Moor III ambush and the advance toward the Twin Star System 349 375 376.
By this stage, Chloe’s developing command style strongly favored offense. Even retreats and maneuvers served her larger aim of renewing the attack and achieving strategic objectives quickly 377.
Appearance
Chloe’s original human appearance features long silver hair, blue eyes, pale skin, and a slender figure. Her enhanced body retains her facial likeness but prioritizes combat capability over preserving her original anatomy 19 79 197.
- Original appearance: Described as exceptionally beautiful, with a clear, flawless face 19 22.
- Enhanced height: Her true body stands 2.5 meters tall 197 230.
- Neural Thorn hair: Her silver hair becomes mimicry-capable Neural Thorns 197.
- Purple eyes: Replace her original blue eyes during modification 197.
- Wings and mimicry: Can fly in her Swarm form and transform back into her usual human appearance 231.
- Design template: Isha models the proposed enhanced body partly after the Queen of Blades 197.
Personality
Repeated assassination attempts turn Chloe’s childhood openness into arrogance, suspicion, and an intense need for control. She enjoys visible displays of authority and deliberately balances powerful subordinates against one another to prevent them from becoming independent centers of influence 14 16 24 168.
Her treatment of humans can be ruthless. She values obedience over affection, uses terror against hostile nobles, and increasingly employs human armies to limit Swarm casualties. Anger sometimes overrides her judgment, though she can recognize the strategic damage caused by her impulsiveness 68 73 80 83 109.
Within the Swarm, Chloe becomes warmer and more emotionally vulnerable. Its shared goodwill allows her to lower her defenses, and she values its sense of belonging above worldly wealth or sovereignty. Although prolonged network contact influences her thinking, her later decision to join the Swarm is explicitly presented as her own choice rather than brainwashing 19 28 115.
Her devotion also drives insecurity: she fears disappointing the Overmind and initially resents Stars’s superior standing. After returning to the Swarm herself, she becomes willing to acknowledge their shared immaturity and rebuild their relationship around cooperation 57 191 349.
Abilities & Skills
Psionics
Chloe possesses strong innate mental power, further enhanced by implants, network support, and her modified body 13 23 197.
- Mental influence: Can control unintelligent magical beasts and ordinarily overpower an adult human’s mind when sufficiently amplified; her attempt against Zhang Han fails 13.
- Telekinesis and projection: Creates a fortress model and retrieves a ring from Arthur’s hand at a distance 68 136.
- Voice amplification: Makes Duke’s surrender order audible across the battlefield 79.
- Lethal mental attack: Kills a city guard officer through direct psionic contact 77.
- Mental-world construction: Creates clothing and imagined objects within her consciousness space; excessive use can exhaust her body and cause collapse 29.
Network Command and Shared Perception
Her neural connections allow her to direct Swarm forces, use their senses, and draw on shared processing and psionic power 30 77 83 86.
- Shared vision: Observes distant armies through concealed Swarm scouts and a Hydralisk’s eyes 83 85.
- Computational support: Uses the small network to calculate artillery trajectories and improve the accuracy of twenty Magic Crystal Cannons 86.
- Memory access: Studies archived combat records and retrieves several memories simultaneously, at increased strain on her brain 30.
- Permission limits: As Executor, cannot independently authorize every Hatchery function or upgrade while Zhang Han sleeps 20 32 33.
- Emotional feedback: Severe agitation can unsettle nearby Swarm units, whose emotions can then intensify her own 191.
Psionics Enchantment and Psionics Field
Chloe learns Stars’s Psionics Enchantment from the network and later demonstrates fleet-scale empowerment 77 320.
- Army enchantment: Reinforces carapaces, sharpens natural weapons, and provides protective psionic shielding across 5,000 units 77.
- Fleet empowerment: Increases psionic attack output, survivability, and sublight speed throughout the affected fleet 320.
- Offensive acceleration: Uses her Psionics Field to drive ships rapidly into hostile formations 375.
- Source qualification: The breakthrough against Zair follows her prayer to the Overmind; the passage describes the power flowing through her as mysterious rather than explaining its mechanism 320.
Military Command
Chloe’s formal education provides a foundation, but her practical command ability develops through experience, Swarm records, and Cerebrate assistance 16 22 30 375.
- Ground tactics: Uses layered defenses, flanking attacks, night raids, bait forces, and concealed encirclements 31 39 160.
- Reconnaissance: Incorporates Guardian aerial intelligence into operational maps and ambush planning 157 160.
- Force management: Trades resources and political concessions for human troops to reduce Swarm losses and accelerate conquest 73 83.
- Limitations: Begins both ground and space command with limited practical experience; frustration can cause mistakes despite numerical superiority 22 319 320.
- Developed style: Favors rapid, repeated attacks, sometimes accepting substantial losses to achieve objectives quickly 377.
Mimic-Based Physiology
Isha’s modification gives Chloe an adaptable body designed for strength and increased psionic capability 197.
- Appearance alteration: Can mimic other forms and resume her familiar human appearance 197 231.
- Flight: Uses wings to travel between assignments 231.
- Combat-focused transformation: Preserves her facial likeness while allowing the remainder of her body to be optimized for power 197.
