Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Basic Hatchery 20 Establishes the core needed to sustain and reproduce the planetary Swarm; available strains remain limited.
Level Two Hive 24 32 The Hatchery grows larger, while its level-two Hive Mind supports coordination but lacks the advanced command functions of higher-level counterparts.
Combined melee–ranged force 28 Needle Crawlers supplement Zerglings, providing inexpensive ranged fire and emergency shotgun-like volleys.
Venomspiders and upgraded fortifications 43 The army recovers to 20,000 units, including 3,000 Venomspiders. Specialized Creep Tumors gain stronger defenses, five spiked tentacles, and ranged needle sacs.
Tier Three Hatchery preparations 53 59 The next Hatchery upgrade is expected to bring the branch into Tier One Civilization. Geothermal infrastructure is prepared to sustain 200,000–300,000 Swarm members once operational.
Psionically enhanced fleet designs 109 Modified Brood Lords launch Scourge and receive psionic organs capable of Psionics Enchantment.
Level Four evolution initiated 115 Zhang Han supplies genetic code and orders Isha to begin upgrading the Hatchery.
Abaddon’s network incorporated 216 Abaddon becomes a subordinate network core and offers expertise in genetic editing, hatching, and psionic fleet optimization.
Adaptive Ghost Bug spellcasting 244 Ghost Bugs advance beyond mechanically applying enchantments and barriers, learning Psionic Storm and more precise offensive and defensive techniques.
Sixteen-system expansion 281 Zhang Han commands three million fleet vessels and more than ten billion Warrior Bugs. His psionic capacity and shortage of commanders—not hatching capacity—limit further growth.
Dual-consciousness network support 310 Zhang Han’s humanity consciousness gains 30% more psionic power after being shattered by a Shroud weapon. His two consciousnesses can support at least twice the network size.
Expansion toward eighty systems 336 Colonization puts Zhang Han’s holdings on course to exceed eighty systems, with developing Hatcheries expected to multiply fleet production.
“Void Swarm” capabilities 370 Under Zhang Han’s influence, vessels gain intangibility, broader combat enhancements, and armor-corroding attacks. He considers “Void Swarm” a more fitting description than “psionic Swarm.”
Certified Overmind Authority 398 A provisional council of one hundred Overminds recognizes Zhang Han. His network upgrade is completed, granting him the highest authority in the current Milky Way Swarm Network.

Background / History

Formation and ancient expansion

The Swarm was among the earliest civilizations to reach the stars. Its original homeworld is outside Galaxy 427, but its location is absent from the Hive Mind’s available memories. Rather than exploring primarily out of curiosity, it expanded to acquire biomass, enrich its gene pool, and evolve 4.

Laplace created the Swarm Network and changed its permissions system to incorporate races allied with the Zerg into their genes. This transformed a single “race” into a broader “swarm.” He also established Overminds and ordinary Nodes to preserve organization as the collective expanded 343 344.

The Swarm’s genetic records span at least one hundred million years. Its ultimate ambitions extend beyond conquering galaxies: it seeks a form of existence capable of surviving the Big Crunch and Great Extinction 102 152.

The Ivan Zerg expedition

An ancient expedition was displaced millions of light-years by a navigation error and reached a barren planet with critically depleted resources. After a year of gathering energy and minerals, it still lacked rare elements needed for a reliable journey to another star system 95.

Supplies preserved by the lost Ivan Zerg civilization saved the expedition. The Swarm subsequently rebuilt on an ocean planet, developed undisturbed for decades, and eventually consumed the galaxy. Its Overmind left the name Ivan Zerg on every stripped planet. The expedition’s near-destruction prompted lasting improvements in environmental engineering and energy efficiency 98.

Defeat and fragmentation in Galaxy 427

The Swarm entered Galaxy 427 with a relatively small intergalactic expedition, intending to develop quietly before consuming the galaxy. Local civilizations instead used the Shroud to predict its arrival, allowing the Stellaris Council to launch a preemptive attack 4.

A Shroud-based weapon shattered the Overmind’s consciousness. The loss of centralized authority caused the command permissions system to collapse, leaving Hatcheries and Nodes independent. Many produced Queens and Logic Cerebrates to lead them, and rival branches began fighting both the Council and one another 4.

The Hive Mind serving Zhang Han’s branch instead preserved what it believed were Overmind fragments and waited for their awakening. Zhang Han later concluded that his human consciousness had been collected by mistake; his memories of playing StarCraft helped convince the Hive Mind that he belonged to the Overmind 4 113.

Rebuilding on Tabi Star

During the escape from the Antill fleet, most of the branch sacrificed themselves to repair and sustain the Overlord carrying the Hive Swarm Consciousness. After months of travel and passage through a hidden wormhole, only three badly damaged Overlords reached their destination 7.

The branch rebuilt in Death Forest. Chloe gathered biomass, developed its Hatchery, and commanded its defense while Zhang Han remained dormant. Her forces defeated a Beast Tide numbering well over one hundred thousand. Zhang Han subsequently contracted the Behemoth, spared the surviving beasts, and promised to restrict the Swarm’s hunting 52 53.

Rival Swarms and reunification

The Astrologers’ Association attempted to seize the Swarm’s power. Joanna created a rival Hatchery by fusing Typhon with a Drone and intended to defeat Zhang Han so that her daughter could lead the Swarm. Her branch produced large numbers of creatures but lacked psionic vessels and genes needed for further evolution 143 148.

Zhang Han later defeated Abaddon and incorporated his network. As his holdings expanded, he cooperated with Kundera against Zagara, another major contender for Overmind Authority. Zagara ultimately accepted assistance from the Whisperers in the Void and escaped through a Shroud Passage 216 281 397.

With Laplace’s guidance, Zhang Han contacted the wider Swarm Council. Its recognition established his highest authority within the current Milky Way Swarm Network, rather than making him the sole Overmind of the entire cosmic Swarm 397 398.

Organization and Society

Command Structure

Component Function
Overmind Holds the highest authority within its network and determines the Swarm’s direction. Its strength increases with the size of the collective 32 234.
Executor An individual authorized by the Overmind to command the Swarm. Executors may be Queens, Infestors, Cerebrates, or other suitable beings 32.
Swarm Node Directs subordinate forces or networks. Capable command Nodes are a persistent bottleneck during rapid expansion 281.
Hive Mind Handles daily operations, calculations, and coordination. It supports decision-makers rather than independently choosing the Swarm’s development 32 81.
Cerebrates Supply computing power and specialized support. Ordinary Cerebrates have deliberately limited intelligence suited to repetitive calculation 81.
Overlords Connect Swarm units to the network and provide transport; connectivity alone does not make them commanders 7 281.
Swarm Council Certifies Overmind Authority. The provisional council examining Zhang Han consists of one hundred Overminds 398.

Collective Identity

  • Shared purpose, distinct minds: The network combines hive-mind authority with gestalt-like individuality. Members share memories and influence the Overmind’s decisions 116.
  • Functional equality: Differences in authority are presented as differences in duty, not distinctions between noble and lowly members 35 116.
  • Meaningful sacrifice: Individuals willingly die for the collective, but the Swarm expects deaths and reclamation to serve a useful purpose 18 131 232.
  • Outsider inclusion: Membership is not restricted to Zerg ancestry. Laplace explicitly identifies the incorporation of other races as part of the Swarm’s founding ideals 344.
  • Unequal individual intelligence: Basic combat creatures possess simple emotions and limited reasoning, while intelligent Nodes can have rich personalities and attachments 69 274.
  • Capacity for disagreement: Gult refuses Zhang Han’s offer of recruitment because he believes abandoning his principles would harm the Swarm’s future 373.
  • Exceptions to collective selflessness: Queen One places her own survival above her fleet, while Zagara refuses to accept defeat in the struggle for Overmind Authority 375 397.

Overmind Succession

  • An Overmind combines a Logical Consciousness with the Swarm’s vast collective consciousness 234.
  • Overminds eventually merge into the network, ordinarily leaving a new emotional, logical avatar to continue leading 234.
  • A surviving Hatchery can rebuild a population and network; intelligent Logic Bugs or a Hive Mind can potentially develop into a new Overmind 113.
  • Council certification requires genuine willingness to die for the Swarm and dedicate one’s wisdom to its advancement. No consciousness can lie during the examination, including Laplace 398.

Abilities & Skills

Swarm Network

  • Battlefield coordination: Translates broad orders into tightly synchronized formations, flanking attacks, withdrawals, and individual movements 31 34 38.
  • Shared experience: A creature can learn from another’s encounter. Combat observations become database entries that other units use to exploit enemy weaknesses 18 39.
  • Predictive support: The Hive Mind can identify an enemy’s preparatory movements, calculate an attack’s likely area, and direct threatened units away 46.
  • Knowledge transfer: Members can upload manufacturing procedures and spell models, allowing others to imitate them while the network performs supporting calculations 309.
  • Psychological influence: Collective currents can reshape members’ values and intensify hunger, loyalty, or bloodlust. The network does not actively suppress independent thought 56 293 344.
  • Capacity limits: Psionic support, computing resources, and available Nodes constrain effective control. Neglected units may follow only basic attack-on-sight orders 281.

Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology

  • Living technology: Swarm buildings are large organisms, while mobile combat strains are smaller specialized organisms 24.
  • Genetic archives: Technology and history are encoded in genes, preserving knowledge across immense spans of time 152.
  • Specialized strains: Gene editing adjusts weapons, armor, ammunition, and body plans for particular enemies and environments 214 365.
  • Cellular nanorobots: The Swarm can manufacture exceptionally advanced bodies, but rarely equips mass armies this way because of the cost 112.
  • Biological warfare: Abaddon’s recorded campaigns demonstrate the use of microorganisms, plagues, and viruses to collapse enemy forces without direct battle 30.
  • Hatchery restrictions: Powerful strains require sufficiently advanced Hatcheries and supporting genetic structures; stored knowledge alone does not guarantee immediate production 20 30.

Creep and Resource Infrastructure

  • Combat enhancement: Creep releases stimulants that improve movement, attack speed, and stamina recovery 31.
  • Supply network: It transports nutrients and energy, helping replenish units and support regeneration 31.
  • Enemy immobilization: Its mucus adheres to creatures lacking Swarm pheromones and hardens into burdensome masses 31.
  • Defensive adaptation: Creep Tumors can develop spiked tentacles and ranged needle sacs 31 43.
  • Energy harvesting: Specialized structures exploit geothermal heat; underwater Creep absorbs seabed nutrients and recovers biomass sinking from battles above 59 292.
  • Operating cost: Fully activating Creep’s enhancements consumes substantial energy, so they normally run at low intensity 31.

Psionics and Void Enhancements

  • Early limitation: Stars observes that Swarm creatures possess substantial psionic power but initially cannot use it effectively 55.
  • Ghost Bug support: Ghost Bugs draw on collective power, share discoveries, and provide enchantments, barriers, offensive spells, and Frost-Mist Armor 244 303.
  • Fleet-wide improvement: Psionics theory helps Zhang Han’s fleet achieve favorable exchange ratios against Zagara’s elite forces under equal computing and command conditions 362.
  • Void-state defense: Later vessels gain a 50% chance of avoiding damage through intangibility; high-energy weapons such as Tachyon Lances bypass this protection 370.
  • Void-state attack: Vessels can become intangible while attacking and corrode most metallic armor, but not neutron armor 370.
  • Research objective: Abaddon proposes that understanding the Shroud could let the Swarm overcome dimensional restrictions and become a tier IV civilization. This remains a research ambition, not a confirmed advancement 266.

Infiltration and Subversion

  • Mimic operatives: The Swarm has extensive experience infiltrating civilizations, overthrowing governments, sabotaging infrastructure, and gathering intelligence 189.
  • Shapeshifting: Mimics can change form or combine features from different strains, though their size prevents transformation into enormous units such as Ultralisks 197.
  • Political infiltration: Swarm-aligned agents embedded within allied civilizations help fracture the combined fleet at Fairy Great Wall One 356.
  • Economic integration: Johnny proposes making Swarm production indispensable to foreign industrial chains so that profitable partners will tolerate his identity 260.

Notable Units

Unit / Strain Role and distinguishing traits
Zergling Fast, inexpensive melee fighter armed with bone blades; often forms the vanguard of combined formations 21 31.
Needle Crawler Low-cost ranged support with penetrating needles and a close-range burst discharge; costs only one-tenth more energy than a Zergling 28.
Hydralisk Needle-firing combat strain with variants specializing in rapid fire or heavily armored targets 214.
Venomspider Uses acid, strong adhesive silk, and an acid-injecting stinger. Excels in complex terrain but has a brittle shell and weak regeneration 43.
Fire Roach / Plasma Bug Artillery strain using corrosive acid or searing plasma; size and ammunition vary with battlefield needs 214.
Defiler Support strain capable of releasing gray mist that disrupts projectiles and can cause enemy artillery to fall among friendly troops 214.
Mutalisk Mobile, inexpensive aerial fighter with rapid recovery, offset by limited firepower and relative fragility 70.
Scourge Expendable impact attacker used to damage ships, pin down enemies, and buy time 3 319.
Corruptor Flexible fleet unit capable of fighting at close or long range 319.
Brood Lord Major fleet damage dealer; modified designs launch Scourge instead of explosive Broodlings 109 319.
Devourer One of the fleet’s principal damage-dealing strains 319.
Fang Warship Armored ramming vessel produced in light, heavy, and superheavy forms; effective use depends heavily on command 149 319.
Specialized Leviathan Heavy biological warship equipped with four Gigaton-Class Electromagnetic Cannons 149.
Ghost Bug Psionic specialist whose shared learning and access to collective power enhance entire fleets 244 303.
Heroic units Exceptional strains preserved in the gene bank, requiring costly hatching procedures 216.

Warfare and Limitations

Military Doctrine

  • Concentrate superiority: The Swarm favors isolating weaker enemy groups, destroying them with superior local forces, and expanding while surviving enemies regroup 30 32.
  • Speed at every stage: Its inherited doctrine emphasizes hatching, marching, killing, and delivering firepower as quickly as possible 76.
  • Strategic attrition: Resources sufficient for a conventional civilization’s fleet can produce a Swarm fleet ten to twenty times larger 113.
  • Adapt through combat: Shared records allow repeated engagements to improve the effectiveness of surviving and newly hatched units 39 50.
  • Defend in depth: Underground Hatcheries, geothermal supplies, tunnels, and planetary installations allow resistance even after losing control of space 36 163.
  • Conceal orbital targets: Gray Fog Spores obstruct optical and radar detection, forcing enemies to deploy ground forces to locate installations 163.

Vulnerabilities

  • Command disruption: Destroying central command organisms can collapse a force’s coordination. The Shroud weapon’s attack on the original Overmind fragmented the expedition itself 4 6.
  • Field-shield incompatibility: Conventional energy shields interfere with the Swarm Network. Disconnected non-Logic units become confused or frenzied and may attack allies 150.
  • Infrastructure dependence: Losing combat troops is replaceable, but destroying Creep damages the foundations supporting the army 36.
  • Resource requirements: Biomass, energy, and rare elements remain essential; isolated fleets can exhaust themselves sustaining critical organisms 7 95.
  • Costly heavy bodies: Ships larger than ordinary biological organs can sustain require fusion-reactor organs, sharply increasing hatching costs 150.
  • Individual inferiority in some matchups: Low-level strains can be outclassed by advanced armored soldiers, forcing the Swarm to accept unfavorable casualties 141 163.
  • Incomplete scientific understanding: Even after consuming Ether Drakes and devoting extensive Cerebrate research to them, the Swarm cannot fully explain their existence 102.
