| Role | Space warfare, interstellar migration, planetary invasion, and the conquest or absorption of Hatchery systems 7 220 281. |
| Later Forms | Zhang Han’s forces develop into a psionic fleet and later the Void Swarm; these upgrades do not apply uniformly to rival fleets 303 370. |
| Status | Active during Laplace’s pursuit of Zagara 396. |
| First Appearance | Spaceborne Swarm forces appear during Zhang Han’s arrival, including battleship-sized Brood Lords 1. |
Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Conventional biological fleet | 3 | Mutalisks, Corruptors, Devourers, and Scourge provide complementary combat roles, but struggle to penetrate enemy field shields. |
| Redesigned psionic vessels | 109 | Zhang Han develops Brood Lords that launch psionically protected Scourge and Corruptors inspired by the Frost Serpent. Simulations show the cheaper new fleet defeating an equally numerous Antillian force while losing one vessel per 1.5 enemy vessels destroyed. |
| Recovered heavy weapons | 149 | Specialized Leviathans field four Gigaton-Class Electromagnetic Cannons each. This is recovered Swarm technology, not a new invention copied from the Antillians. |
| Abaddon-assisted optimization | 216 | After his defeat, Abaddon offers genetic-editing and hatching expertise to accelerate recovery and improve Zhang Han’s psionic fleets. |
| Fleet-wide psionic support | 224 | Ghost Bugs strengthen Zhang Han’s ships with psionic barriers and Psionics Enchantment during attacks on independent Hatcheries. |
| Anti-Antillian specialization | 267 | A fleet attacking Cadian uses Abaddon’s shared intelligence to field tougher Scourge, missile-specialized Mutalisks, faster armored Fang Warships, and projectiles adjusted to penetrate field shields. |
| Universal psionic capability | 289 | Cadian’s tactical computer identifies psionic abilities across Zhang Han’s entire attacking fleet, explaining its overwhelming combat advantage. |
| Layered defensive enhancement | 303 | Reinforced carapaces and Ghost Bug shields improve survivability. Heavy units can receive Frost-Mist Armor, effectively doubling their defenses. |
| Quality-focused assault fleet | 348 | Zhang Han hatches 100,000 specially strengthened ships, including 1,000 Leviathans armed with Tachyon Lances, to attack Gult’s Meteorite Fortresses. |
| Improved psionic efficiency | 362 | With equal computing power and command ability, Zhang Han’s fleet can destroy 1.5–1.8 of Zagara’s elite ships per vessel lost. |
| Deity-linked field amplification | 363 | Stars’s psionics field sharply strengthens her fleet. Scourge gain 30% more impact-explosion power, while 5,000 Ghost Bugs use Thunder Hell to tear open Moras’s encirclement. |
| Void Swarm | 370 | Vessels gain intangibility with a 50% chance to avoid damage, attacks that corrode most metallic armor, and broader improvements to speed, offense, and resistance. High-energy weapons such as Tachyon Lances bypass the intangibility advantage; neutron armor resists the corrosion. |
Background
The Swarm entered space to acquire biomass, expand its gene pool, and evolve. Its homeworld lies outside Galaxy 427. The invading force initially intended to develop quietly, but local civilizations used the Shroud to foresee its arrival and organize a preemptive attack 4.
A Shroud-based weapon shattered the Overmind’s consciousness and broke centralized command. Hatcheries produced Queens and Logic Cerebrates to replace it, while independent Nodes began fighting both the Stellaris Council and one another. Consequently, “Swarm Fleet” describes forces on opposing sides of the same civil war, not a single continuously unified command 4.
An earlier expedition illustrates the fleet’s dependence on material reserves. After a course correction consumed half its numbers, it reached a barren planet and spent a year gathering resources. Supplies later recovered from a repository enabled it to reach an ocean world, hatch a replacement fleet, and begin decades of expansion that ended with the consumption of an entire galaxy 95 98.
During Zhang Han’s early retreat, the fleet divided into decoys to mislead pursuers. Its creatures then sacrificed their own biomass to repair the Overlord carrying the Hive Swarm Consciousness. After months of travel and passage through a hidden wormhole, only three badly damaged Overlords reached the destination, later identified as Tabi Star 7 252.
Organization and Command
Swarm Network
- Collective coordination: The network links individual creatures into a fighting whole, enabling synchronized pincer movements, flanking attacks, and withdrawal after mass charges 35.
- Highest authority: The Overmind holds supreme permissions, but individual minds share memories and influence its decisions through the collective thought current 116.
- Fleet command: Core Nodes and Cerebrates organize formations and distribute orders. Large forces can be divided into subsidiary networks for separate campaigns 211 281.
- Protective priority: The network can subordinate aggression to the Overmind’s survival, as it does when Zhang Han senses Zagara’s neutron-star trap 305.
- Command vulnerability: Destroying central command units can collapse a fleet’s coordination. Zagara later disrupts the network strongly enough to prevent the Specialized Cerebrate from transferring his consciousness before death 6 330.
Command Limits
- Zhang Han’s expansion is constrained by his psionic capacity and the number of capable commanders, prompting the use of simplified Nodes for lower-level command 281.
- Lesser Nodes can follow rigid instructions but perform substantially worse than their parent War Cerebrates. This becomes a weakness during the rapid expansion into the Libra Sector 300.
- Computing power also affects production: when Isha concentrates on repairing Zhang Han’s human consciousness, Tabi Star’s fleet-hatching efficiency falls by more than half 243.
- Superior vessels do not guarantee victory. At Cadian, Zagara’s more agile formations and better tactical command offset Zhang Han’s advantages in unit quality and fortress firepower 317.
Fleet Composition
| Unit | Battlefield Role | Distinguishing Features |
|---|---|---|
| Fang Warship | Vanguard, damage absorption, and ramming | Cheap, heavily armored vessels with fang-like rams. Light, heavy, and superheavy variants withstand attacks from progressively heavier enemy units 204 319. |
| Mutalisk | Frigate-equivalent screen and harassment | Highly maneuverable, with relatively weak firepower; protects larger vessels and supports flexible engagements 210. |
| Scourge | Armor-piercing suicide attack | Explodes against enemy ships. Slow approaches can bypass field shields, but expose it to point-defense fire; tougher carapaces and psionic protection improve its chances 3 109 267. |
| Corruptor | Intermediate combat vessel | Can fight at close or long range. Zhang Han’s psionic version uses destructive white-light breath derived from the Frost Serpent 109 210 319. |
| Brood Lord | Long-range heavy fire support | Battleship-equivalent organism. Zhang Han’s redesigned version launches Scourge protected by Psionics Enchantment 109 210. |
| Devourer | Close-range heavy assault | More heavily armored and damaging than a Brood Lord, but shorter-ranged. Its corrosive acid can dissolve a Council destroyer 210. |
| Swarm Leviathan | Heavy combat backbone | An ordinary specimen is approximately ten kilometers long. Specialized variants carry Bio-Gigaton Cannons or Tachyon Lances 211 272 348. |
| Ghost Bug | Psionic fleet support | Supplies barriers, Psionics Enchantment, and Frost-Mist Armor; coordinated groups can unleash large-scale attacks such as Thunder Hell 224 303 363. |
| Nether Bug | Psionic offense and enhancement | Uses Psionic Storm and Psionics Enchantment to damage enemy formations and strengthen friendly forces 348. |
| Warrior Bug Nest | Mobile reinforcement platform | Thirty-kilometer-wide organisms deployed by Zagara. They continuously hatch replacements while their egg and energy reserves last 317. |
| Overlord | Transport, reconnaissance, and command support | Carries important consciousnesses and supplies scouting information through the network 7 361. |
A conventional formation places Fang Warships first, followed by Devourers, Corruptors, Leviathans, and long-range Brood Lords at the rear 211.
Abilities and Warfare
Biological Production
- Fleets are hatched rather than assembled and crewed. Their production depends on available matter and energy 3.
- For the resources an ordinary interstellar civilization spends on one fleet, the Swarm can produce a force ten to twenty times larger 113.
- The Dyson Membrane supplies enough energy for Tabi Star’s Giant Hatchery to produce 1,000 vessels daily while retaining a surplus. The system’s Space Hatchery later produces 4,000 vessels per day 204 303.
- During resource-starved voyages, fleet organisms can be consumed to preserve essential units or fuel further travel 7 95.
Adaptive Specialization
- Genetic engineering allows fleets to change armor, weapon organs, projectile behavior, and unit composition against particular opponents 267 365.
- Combat information can benefit rival Swarm factions: Abaddon broadcasts Antillian weaknesses over the public network despite the Swarm’s political fragmentation 267.
- Zhang Han’s fleets adapt to Libra Sector weapons until ordinary hits can no longer destroy their ships as reliably as before 354.
- Adaptation also works against Zhang Han. Zagara’s ships develop vibrating carapaces that destabilize psionic spells and reduce their damage 376.
Shields and Defense Penetration
- Conventional field shields are incompatible with ordinary Swarm units. Their fields interfere with the Swarm Network, disconnecting creatures from command and causing confusion, frenzy, or attacks on allies 150.
- Early fleets compensate with thick armor, high damage, and overwhelming numbers rather than field shields 150.
- Psionic barriers provide a later defensive alternative without the stated network-interference problem 224 303.
- Slow acid projectiles, Scourge, and ramming attacks can breach enemy field shields. Later psionic fleets also make high-speed plasma and electromagnetic weapons effective against them 355.
- Exceptional shields remain dangerous: the Titan Peacemaker resists most attacks, and even specialized Leviathan Bio-Gigaton Cannons lose much of their effectiveness against it 272.
Attrition and Invasion
- Fleets can fight to the last creature rather than withdraw after losses that would break an ordinary navy 355.
- Hyperspace exits are natural engagement points, but their dimensions limit how many vessels can fight at once. At Cadian, each side can engage only about 200,000 units simultaneously 317.
- Space superiority does not ensure quick planetary conquest. Underground Hatcheries and extensive tunnels allow defenders to continue fighting after the surface is bombarded 163 374.
- Control of battlefield cleanup matters: during Zhang Han’s assault on Gult, the defenders recover the fallen biomass, reducing the lasting value of his ground attack 349.
Documented Fleet Strength
These figures describe particular forces or command-wide totals, not the strength of every Swarm faction combined.
| Chapter | Force | Recorded Strength |
|---|---|---|
| 151 | Abaddon’s defending fleet | 600,000 vessels; nevertheless outmatched by a Council reinforcement force of 30,000 ships and three Titans. |
| 204 | Zhang Han’s fleet | 20,000 vessels: 10,000 Fang Warships, 7,000 Psionics Corruptors, and 3,000 psionic Brood Lords. |
| 210 | Zhang Han’s Tabi Star defense | 35,000 vessels, accompanied by 200 Star Eaters. |
| 226 | Zhang Han’s fleet after absorbing Kagat | 180,000 vessels departing for the next system; another 20,000 newly hatched vessels prepare to leave Tabi Star. |
| 233 | Zhang Han’s next Hatchery assault | 200,000 vessels. |
| 243 | Zhang Han’s early offensive | 350,000 vessels, below the originally planned 500,000. |
| 281 | Zhang Han’s three-fleet expansion | 3,000,000 total: 1,500,000 under Kagar, 700,000 under Kagat, and 800,000 under Zhang Han. |
| 310 | Returning expeditionary fleets | Kagar’s force reaches 1,700,000; Kagat and Chloe’s force reaches 750,000. |
| 330 | Zhang Han’s rebuilt forces | 4,200,000 after returning fleets and reinforcements arrive. Recent fighting has cost 1,500,000 vessels, of which 500,000 have already been replaced. |
| 397 | Zagara’s remaining force | 400,000 vessels, compared with nearly 10,000,000 half a year earlier. |
Major Campaigns
Early Antillian Engagements
Zhang Han’s retreating forces exploit an Antillian commander’s belief that they are protecting an important command organism. Successive departures draw away pursuit groups and force costly covering attacks, leaving the commander with only 200 of his original 400 warships before he orders his flagship’s secret main gun fired 6.
In a later battle, Abaddon’s fleet initially contains an Antillian force at a hyperspace exit. Three Council Titans and their accompanying fleet reverse the situation, destroying Leviathans and breaking the encirclement despite the Swarm’s enormous numerical advantage 149 151.
Unification Through Conquest
Abaddon’s defeat gives Zhang Han access to an experienced genetic specialist and intelligence on nearby independent Hatcheries. Zhang Han follows connected Hyperspace Routes, absorbing Nodes and integrating their fleets rather than relying solely on new production 216 220 226.
Kagar’s fleet becomes another target of this strategy. Zhang Han traps it, stretches its formation, and uses an elite ambush to open a route toward the Leviathan carrying its core Node 252.
Cadian and the Libra Sector
Zhang Han’s 400,000-strong attacking force destroys Cadian’s 50,000-ship combined fleet in under five hours. Its universal psionic abilities mark a decisive change from the Swarm’s earlier dependence on numerical superiority 289.
Expansion into the Libra Sector prompts the Council to acknowledge that local fleets cannot stop a million-strong Swarm force whose biological vessels now approach Steel Fleet combat quality. Even small Swarm rearguards become costly to eliminate 299 303.
War with Zagara
Zagara’s neutron-star trap forces Zhang Han to sacrifice tens of thousands of rearguard ships while escaping into hyperspace. Her subsequent offensive combines pressure at Cadian with detached attacks on his poorly defended production systems 305 317.
After surviving the crisis, Zhang Han rebuilds and divides his forces between defense and renewed expansion: 2.2 million vessels remain near Cadian and the Stargate, while two million form five expeditionary forces 330 331.
Later offensives combine specialized Tachyon Lance Leviathans, psionics fields, and the Void Swarm’s new properties to break fortified positions. Stars and Chloe strike into Zagara’s rear, while Laplace’s pursuing Void Swarm eventually catches the forces she leaves behind during her attempted escape 348 368 370 396.
Mixed Fleets in the Libra Sector
A Swarm force confronting Gu Teng is joined by 20,000 unidentified steel vessels. The apparent alliance is part of a larger operation involving twenty civilizations that have sided with the Swarm, including five with ships embedded inside the defending combined fleet 355 356.
The biological contingent remains orderly under an ordinary War Cerebrate. Johnny lacks fleet-command talent, while Typhon is occupied coordinating the expanding network’s increasingly complex consciousnesses 356.
