Background / History
Eddard's current consciousness originally belonged to Li Ke, a Chinese orphan from Blue Star. Introverted and insecure, Li Ke studied humanities at junior college and entered a difficult working life. After losing his savings to a telecom scam, he died of anger in his rented room and awakened in the body of Edd Flint, whose original occupant had died more than a month before the opening chapter 1.
The original Eddard was House Flint's younger son and had studied at the Citadel without expecting to inherit. His father, mother, and elder brother died of a fever, leaving the family without its intended heir. He consequently left his studies to become lord of Flint's Finger. His inheritance received recognition from Winterfell and the royal court, frustrating his uncle Rickard's ambitions 1 3.
Li Ke inherited Eddard's memories, which helped him adapt to the local language and understand his position. Recognizing Westeros from a television series he had watched, he feared the coming catastrophe associated with the Others. Rather than initially seeking conquest, he began recording remembered modern knowledge to improve his territory and secure his survival 1.
Appearance
- Original appearance: A handsome, black-haired, black-eyed youth, approximately 1.7 meters tall, with a somewhat frail build. His dark hair and eyes come from his mother of House Blackwood 2.
- Golden Eye: Following his awakening, his eyes appear golden within his supernatural perception, with an additional golden eye between his brows 7.
- Mutated body: His perceived body below the neck becomes extensively transformed, including hands as thick as his thighs 7.
- Combat form: During the fight with B'lack, his left hand becomes a blood-red clawed limb capable of opening into a huge maw; his right arm becomes twisted Dragonglass, and his head resembles an evil-eye creature 18.
- Perception tentacles: When forging machinery, countless eye-bearing tentacles manifest around his head. Their visibility varies: some observers perceive his monstrous form clearly, while others see only fleeting glimpses or nothing unusual 21 28.
Personality
Eddard's early behavior is shaped by fear, displacement, and a desire for security. He initially hides in the keep and leaves administration to Maester Albert, but deliberately rehearses the confident speech and gestures he later uses to assert his authority. His ambition grows from improving his own circumstances into building a powerful magical city rather than merely accumulating wealth 1 3 30.
He approaches magic experimentally, keeping notes, testing limitations, and seeking enough data to make reliable use of unfamiliar powers. Research increasingly absorbs him: he sometimes prefers the Dream World and neglects food or rest while working 12 22 28.
His concern for his subjects coexists with calculated exploitation. He prioritizes rescuing miners, offers improved wages, and moves dangerous underground work away from ordinary miners. However, he also manipulates beliefs and perceptions, drugs captured women for experiments, exploits prisoners through compulsory labor, and secretly arranges slave purchases to increase his workforce 15 21 32 40.
He rewards useful service and remains supportive of early followers. Even after Bran and Ralf's initial magical potential is largely exhausted, he intends to continue trusting and supporting them 38.
Abilities & Skills
Golden Eye
The Golden Eye amplifies Eddard's perception and supports both manipulation and retrospection, techniques refined through White Holy Tree's calculations 7 34.
- Senses emotions and reveals distorted supernatural aspects of people and objects 7 9.
- Extracts information about the past from souls and perceives possible future events; the future remains uncertain 9 15.
- Combines foreseen fragments into realistic illusions that influence others' decisions 15.
- Analyzes an opponent's movements and the operation of its powers at high speed 17.
- Does not itself supply the tangible destructive energy Eddard needs against B'lack; he must draw on his wrist powers instead 17.
Perception Skinchanging
White Holy Tree names Eddard's unusual ability Perception Skinchanging, distinguishing it from conventional possession of a living host 23.
- Allows him to travel along the boundary between reality and the Dream World without occupying a creature 23.
- Supports remote observation, communication, and possession, including his interventions through Billy and Bran 13 14 15.
- Operates freely across House Flint's lands, but becomes weaker with distance. White Holy Tree's predicted restrictions beyond those lands remain untested 23.
- Meets substantial resistance from intact human souls, particularly those protected by strong religious convictions. His early attempts to possess other pirates largely fail 13.
Dream World and Soul Manipulation
Eddard's Dream World arises from his own abilities. White Holy Tree attributes his access to an unexplained interaction between his soul, bloodline, the castle's Heart Tree, and the Glass Candle 23.
- Controls the Heart Tree's processing of corrupted souls and uses its accumulated knowledge 10 22.
- Creates White Holy Tree, a logical assistant built from the Weirwood's consciousness and his memories 22.
- Reshapes B'lack into Demonspawn and uses its offspring for parasitic modification 23 27.
- Places Alys Rivers's soul inside a spider monster, creating the Dragonglass Spider Mother 36.
- Faces a serious risk of losing control if he attempts to modify the powerful consciousnesses sealed within his hands and chest 22.
Flame and Dragonglass Magic
The powers associated with Eddard's wrists provide flame energy and a Dragonglass-related mixture of ice and fire 17.
- Forms weapons, devours demonic beings, and seals spirits or other entities in Dragonglass 17 18 49.
- Produces Fire-attribute Dragonglass by infusing Dragonglass with purified souls of the Children of the Forest; those souls gradually disappear as the heat is consumed 27.
- Melts and recasts Valyrian steel using flame and Twisted Souls 27 28.
- Creates Dragonglass Lesser Demons for mining and the Dragonglass Magic Array for rune awakening 32 45.
Demonic Modification and Charm
- Parasite Demons: Mutate hosts to enhance their existing strengths. Successful subjects include animals, Rickard, Brandon, and several castle staff members 27 38.
- Charm Magic: Influences intelligent beings' souls and perceptions. Eddard's limited mental strength initially permits only simple applications, which work better on demoralized targets 33.
- Bloodline development: Uses magical modification as a foundation for his Bloodline Wizard Faction, while recognizing that complete mastery of pure mental power may require several generations of change 44 45.
Engineering and Administration
- Applies remembered knowledge to sanitation, composting, agriculture, road planning, taxation, and professional military organization 4 5 24.
- Designs a magical Stirling engine, drawing on engine studies undertaken after conversations with an engineer during his former work at a waste-incineration plant 27.
- Uses magical materials and biological resources to overcome manufacturing limitations, while relying on specialists such as Albert and Black to refine designs and prepare components 27 28.
- Organizes literacy and magical education into staged classes, with language, mathematics, physical education, and moral education among the first subjects 43.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Glass Candle — Connected to the original Eddard's Citadel research and to his access to the Dream World. Eddard presents it to Albert as the source of his unusual knowledge 5 23.

- Rogers Ryswell — Former envoy of House Dustin who accepts Eddard's invitation to change allegiance and swears himself to House Flint 30 39.
- Masse T — Commercial partner who arranges access to markets, slaves, Valyrian steel ornaments, and Ironborn contacts 40.
- House Stark — Liege house whose recognition secures Eddard's inheritance. Its prohibition on slave trading complicates his workforce policies 3 21.
- Aiju — Long-serving head maid who treats him with familial concern and repeatedly urges him to eat and rest 20 24 28.
