| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Initial dragonglass alteration | 7 | Through his supernatural perception, Eddard sees Albert as partly human and partly dragonglass. When Eddard approaches with his perception, the dragonglass spreads and Albert’s uncertainty gives way to reverence and agreement. No spellcasting is demonstrated. |
| Complete dragonglass corruption; awakening deferred | 25 | After witnessing Bran and Ralf’s awakenings, Albert fully accepts Eddard’s mastery of magic, and his dragonglass corruption becomes complete. He declines an awakening because of his age; Eddard also considers the procedure too dangerous to attempt carelessly. |
| Magical awakening and dual modification | 38 | By this chapter, Eddard has modified Albert with a Parasite Demon in the Dream World and Demon Child dragonglass in the Real World. Albert is no longer stooped and can manipulate dragonglass structures and laboratory liquid. |
Background / History
Long Service to House Flint
Albert left the Citadel after qualifying as a maester and continued corresponding with it. By the beginning of the story, he has served House Flint for more than twenty years and personally delivered Eddard at birth. He formerly lived and maintained records in the castle’s rookery tower, but Eddard’s father moved his bedroom and office into the main keep as he grew older 1 5.
After the reborn Eddard initially withdraws from public affairs, Albert handles the castle’s business. He brings the young lord a requested history of House Stark, worries about his health, and reassures him that his Citadel education will help him govern. That night, Albert reads a message from the south and murmurs about the Glass Candle and flames 1 3.
Reforms and the Glass Candle
Albert introduces the principal castle staff at Eddard’s first council and presents his plans for taxation, construction, and a Household Guard. His own research has identified rich mineral deposits in the western mountains, though difficult terrain has previously prevented their development 3 4.
His Citadel connections make him difficult for Eddard to mislead: Albert recognizes that the new sanitation regulations do not come from established practices in Oldtown. Eddard therefore shows him the Glass Candle and claims it revealed ancient Valyrian knowledge. Albert reacts with fear, then curiosity, but leaves without resolving his doubts about magic 5.
During Eddard’s prolonged unconsciousness, Albert monitors his condition and examines him after he wakes. Unknown to Albert, Eddard’s newly awakened perception has already influenced his thoughts, strengthening his acceptance of the lord 7.
From Skeptic to Magical Researcher
Albert helps supply the response to the mine attacks and later receives orders to drug twenty weakened female Clan Warriors and have them taken to a cellar for Eddard’s experiments. He also works with Beris to teach farmers Eddard’s composting and agricultural methods 9 21 24.
Witnessing Bran and Ralf’s awakenings convinces Albert that magic is real. Although he initially refuses to undergo the process himself, he commits to recording the discoveries and training literate apprentices. His research soon includes summoned demons, Parasite Demon remains, and a Demon Child preserved in dragonglass 25 26 27 28.
Eddard later promises him an awakening ritual. By the dragon-creation experiment, Albert has undergone both Dream World and Real World modifications. At Albert’s urging, Eddard attempts to create a dragon before pursuing other mythical creatures; the resulting lizardlike hybrid dies upon release from its chamber 32 38.
Industry and the Magic Academy
Albert refines the drawings for Eddard’s dragonglass-powered Stirling engine and helps develop the Alchemy Workshop’s machinery through repeated experimentation. He also warns when construction, wages, and the prototype threaten to exhaust the territory’s funds and materials 27 28 32 40.
For the Magic Academy, Albert prepares plans, discusses student selection with the White Holy Tree, and organizes more than two hundred students into beginner, intermediate, and advanced classes. Thirty exceptionally talented students enter the advanced class under Eddard. Albert also keeps the teaching materials available for supervised reading 43 44.
He remains active in laboratory work afterward. During the investigation of the strange organism obtained from Alan Farwynd, Albert records its behavior and opens its dragonglass containment prism at Eddard’s command. Eddard subsequently confronts and seals the entity he identifies as the Drowned God 49.
Appearance
- Aged build: Initially stooped and frail enough to receive a guard’s support on the castle stairs 1 38.
- Voice: Somewhat hoarse and shrill 1.
- Hands: Withered, with few calluses apart from those on his right thumb, index finger, and middle finger 7.
- After awakening: No longer stooped; later possesses enough physical stamina to spend several entire nights preparing academy plans 38 43.
- Supernatural appearance: Eddard initially perceives him as a half-human, half-dragonglass figure. This is a vision through Eddard’s perception, not an ordinary visible feature 7.
Personality
Albert is protective of Eddard, expressing concern over his late-night writing, encouraging him through the uncertainty of ruling, and insisting on examining him before allowing him out of bed. His long service gives him the confidence to direct the household when the lord’s health is at stake 1 7.
His scholarly curiosity competes with a strong fear of uncontrolled magic. He initially repeats the warning that magic is a “sword without a hilt,” yet direct evidence transforms his skepticism into enthusiasm. That enthusiasm can become reckless: he rushes toward a newly transformed demon to obtain a specimen and nearly suffers a claw attack before Eddard intervenes 25 26.
Albert dreams of becoming an archmaester, educating students, and writing a work bearing his name. He initially judges himself too old to risk awakening, preferring to preserve knowledge for successors. After his modification restores his vigor, he throws himself into educational planning and magical research 25 43.
Abilities & Skills
Medicine and Drug Preparation
Albert practices medicine as House Flint’s maester and has a longstanding interest in the human body 1 7 27.
- Delivered Eddard and later monitored his heartbeat and circulation during his prolonged unconsciousness 1 7.
- Prepares a weakened Sweet Sleep Flower compound to manage his insomnia. Because he omits stronger poisons, this preparation produces effects resembling drunkenness rather than the full compound’s lethal effects 11.
- His medical experience helps him approach disturbing demon specimens with curiosity rather than being overwhelmed by their appearance 27.
Research and Engineering
Albert turns Eddard’s concepts into workable designs and maintains detailed experimental records 27 38 40.
- Refines the Stirling-engine drawings and revises the prototype’s dimensions 27 28.
- Co-develops the Alchemy Workshop’s steel-production machinery, including crucibles, crushers, forging presses, conveying pipes, and lime kilns 40.
- Records the dragon-hybrid experiment and the behavior of the organism suspected of being connected to the Drowned God 38 49.
- Deduces that the western mountains contain substantial mineral resources 4.
Dragonglass Manipulation
Following his awakening, Albert directly controls parts of the dragonglass laboratory 38.
- Grows a Dragonglass Pillar from the floor and directs liquid into a specimen container 38.
- Opens a gap in a containment prism to release an experimental organism 49.
- No named combat spell, formal magical rank, or demonstrated offensive application is given.
Teaching and Academic Organization
Albert helps establish an education system outside the Citadel’s usual control 43.
- Teaches agricultural methods with Beris and is assigned to educate Brandon and Bran alongside Eddard 5 24.
- Plans student selection with the White Holy Tree and assigns academy classes 43.
- Holds lesson materials that students may consult on-site but may not remove 44.
- Is designated, alongside Eddard, to personally instruct outstanding students 43.
Administration and Political Advice
Albert combines household management with knowledge of regional affairs 3 29 32.
- Presents Eddard’s reforms and explains recruitment requirements to officials 4.
- Monitors the shortage of funds and supplies, warning against commitments the treasury cannot sustain 32.
- Correctly identifies House Dustin’s likely attempt to gain control of House Flint’s mine 29 30.
- Notices that Beris’s learning resembles a maester’s education more than a minor nobleman’s 38.
Equipment / Items
- Custom reservoir quill — Made by Eddard with a small gold nib and a cylindrical gold ink reservoir inside the hollow shaft, allowing Albert to write continuously without repeatedly dipping it 38.
- Wooden clipboard — Used to hold reform documents and laboratory notes 4 38.
- Demon Child specimen — A Demon Child’s original form enclosed in a Dragonglass Pillar, given to him by Eddard for study before his awakening 28.
- Academy teaching materials — Kept in his custody for students’ supervised review 44.
Relationships
- Eddard “Edd” Flint — Lord, former patient from birth, research partner, and source of his magical awakening. Eddard considers Albert an exceptionally valuable intellectual resource, though he initially fears Albert’s ability to expose inconsistencies in his knowledge and secretly influences his thoughts 1 5 7 28 38.
- Beris — Fellow administrator and partner in spreading agricultural knowledge. Albert privately questions whether Beris’s education indicates a background beyond his claimed minor nobility 24 38.
- Ralf “Eel” — Fellow participant in Eddard’s magical research. Ralf previously stole Albert’s sleep preparation and repurposed it for extracting information; Albert later witnesses his awakening and Magma Demon summoning 11 25 49.
- Bran “Housecat” and Brandon “Big Bear” — Assigned pupils under Albert and Eddard. Bran’s magical awakening becomes part of the demonstration that overturns Albert’s skepticism 5 25.
- White Holy Tree — Collaborates with Albert in the Dream World to select academy students, including the especially gifted children taught by Eddard 43 44.
- Little Arthur — A promising academy student whom Albert believes may become the first to truly master a Fire Demon’s power 44.
