History

Origins and Division

House Flint traces its ancestry to the First Men of Shatterstone Mountain. At its height, the ancestral house controlled the passage between the North and the south alongside the Marsh Kings of the Neck. Marriage ties with the Crannogmen helped it resist House Stark from the north and Ironborn raiders from the south 8.

Its decline culminated in defeat by Rickard Stark, the King in the North known as the “Laughing Wolf.” Guided by his wife, a princess of the Marsh King, Rickard attacked through the Neck from the east. House Flint subsequently split into three branches 8:

Branch Settlement and Allegiance
Flint's Finger Received Flint's Finger and swore allegiance to House Stark beneath a heart tree; adopted “As Strong as Stone” as its words 8.
Widow's Watch Received lands on a narrow peninsula in the eastern North and likewise swore allegiance to House Stark; its words are “We Stand Watch” 8.
Mountain Flint Clan Descendants who refused submission withdrew into the Western Mountains around Shatterstone Mountain 8.

Eddard's Succession

After the deaths of Eddard's immediate family, Rickard “Scar” Flint expected to inherit the lordship. Instead, Winterfell located Eddard, the family's second son, and his appointment received recognition from both House Stark and the royal House Baratheon 3 29.

Unknown to the household, the original Edd Flint had died, and Li Ke, a man from another world, now inhabited his body. Initially withdrawn and dependent on Maester Albert, the new Eddard eventually confronted Rickard, asserted his authority, and convened the castle's principal officers 1 3.

The Mining Crisis

The Bloodheart Clan occupied House Flint's mine, killed workers, and captured others. An escaped transport brought warning to Flint's Finger, prompting Eddard to mobilize soldiers, hired fighters, sailors, and supplies 8 9.

House Flint defeated an Ironborn ambush at Mine Harbor using a transport as bait and two concealed oared warships. Arthur Stone then led the land expedition against the Bloodheart Clan. Although slain clan warriors rose as wights, the trained guards held the formation together and helped prevent a rout 12 13 14 15.

The expedition returned with rescued miners and captured enemies. Eddard publicly celebrated the soldiers, offered returning miners double wages, and assigned prisoners to labor rather than immediate execution 21.

Consolidation and Expansion

Eddard refused House Dustin's subsequent attempt to obtain control of the mine under the guise of assistance. He then prepared its reopening with prisoners and forty-five Dragonglass Lesser Demons 30 32.

During the voyage to the mine, House Flint defeated another pirate force led by Emmy Blacktyde and Mord Farwynd, capturing all but one of the attackers' five longships. The restored mines subsequently supported the rebuilding of Flint's Finger, the reorganization of its troops, and the establishment of a municipal administration 33 38.

Territory and Seat

House Flint's lands occupy a peninsula bordering the Sunset Sea to the west and the Neck to the east. Saline soil and marshland restrict cultivation in the southern and eastern parts of the domain, making grain supply an early concern for Eddard's administration 1 4.

Location Function
Flint's Finger / Crystal's Scar Castle and surrounding settlement; developed into a city with rebuilt docks, paved streets, workshops, and a municipal administration 37 38.
Golden Wheat Village Settlement around the house's farm; initially housed nearly eighty percent of Flint's Finger's commoners 9.
Farm Town Southern settlement that, together with Golden Wheat Village, provided the agricultural foundation for the domain 4 9.
Pasture Town Settlement near the Western Mountains; supplied cavalry during the mining expedition, while its residents traded with mountain clans 4 8 14.
Salt Spear Town Way station near Salt Spear Strand, marking the boundary between the Neck and House Flint's lands 4.
Western Mountains Mine Mineral deposit roughly 160 kilometers from the castle; later expanded into an underground mining complex 4 38.
Mine Harbor Shipping point through which ore is transported to the castle 38.

Flint's Finger Castle

  • Layout: A cliffside complex of roughly 10,000 square meters, containing a keep, courtyard, outer walls, stables, smithy, armory, and godswood 3.
  • Keep: Four aboveground floors and three underground grain-storage levels. It originally lacked dungeon cells 3.
  • Towers: The Great Tower became Eddard's private library and records room; the smaller tower included a lookout and lighthouse using whale-oil lamps and glass reflectors 3.
  • Gatehouse: A roughly ten-meter entrance passage beneath a three-story gatehouse, with more than twenty murder holes for defensive fire and hot oil 29.
  • Godswood: Contains the heart tree, lilacs, and smoke-plum vines. The tree is approximately five hundred years old and serves as a node of the White Holy Tree 39.

Members and Household

  • Eddard “Edd” Flint — Head of the house and lord of its domain; directs its administrative, industrial, and magical development 1 4 27.

  • Bran “Housecat” Flint — Rickard's younger son; becomes a magically awakened practitioner and is appointed to oversee the mines 25 32.
  • Maester Albert — Serves House Flint for more than twenty years. Advises Eddard, assists with agriculture and engineering, and organizes academy classes 1 24 27 43.

  • Sinvara — Red Priestess introduced by Eddard as a member of House Flint; appointed to teach beginner academy students 43.

Government and Reforms

Administration and Agriculture

  • Direct tax collection: Eddard replaces the system of subjects delivering taxes with officials collecting money and grain. He explicitly states that the reform is not a tax increase 4.
  • Infrastructure planning: His initial program calls for roads, new plots, granaries, workshops, a farm, and a commercial estate 4.
  • Agricultural instruction: Maester Albert and Beris are tasked with teaching farmers, including the use of compost made from human and animal waste 24.
  • Municipal organization: Later reforms establish a municipal administration. Visiting ships and travelers are directed through registration and reception facilities 37 38 46.
  • Household welfare: The first concrete housing is allocated to castle servants' families 43.

Prisoner Labor

  • Pirate Reform Act: Captured pirates can earn their freedom by accumulating points through labor 35.
  • Mine assignments: Prisoners work alongside magical creatures, while ordinary miners are reassigned to ore handling and delivery 32 38.
  • Monitoring: Parasite Demons secretly watch the prisoners for Eddard 35.
  • Ransom: Arthur Stone offers Emmy Blacktyde the opportunity to seek ransom from his family 35.

Economy and Industry

Mining and Manufacturing

  • Magical excavation: Dragonglass Lesser Demons become permanent underground miners. Later, Crystal Demon Spiders also excavate ore, while prisoners load carts and veteran miners handle the material before shipment 34 38.
  • Alchemy Workshop: Develops cement production and supplies construction powder and dock adhesive used in rebuilding the settlement 32 37.
  • Magical heat: Fire-attribute Dragonglass provides a potential continuous heat source for lime-burning and steelmaking 27.
  • Powered machinery: Eddard gives Albert a Dragonglass-powered Stirling-engine design. The resulting Magic Energy Number One draws outside commercial interest 27 29 37.
  • Financial limits: Before the mines reopen, wages and construction nearly exhaust the treasury. Eddard expects cement and steel sales to provide new income 32.
