Background / History
Early Life and Mine Appointment
Ralf came from Pasture Town, where dealings with the Western Mountains clans were common. He grew up hearing legends of the Children of the Forest and believed that the Old Gods and magic were real 8 11.
A former thief, he stole a preparation of Sweet Sleep Flower from Maester Albert’s drying herbs and discovered its effects through experimentation. His talent for extracting secrets helped earn Rickard “Scar” Flint’s trust and increasingly important assignments. When Rickard left the mine, Ralf took charge, but his laziness allowed discipline among the workers to deteriorate 8 11.
Bloodheart Clan Captivity
When Bel’s Bloodheart Clan seized the mine, Ralf missed his opportunity to escape because he refused to abandon a bag of embezzled gems. Thin Pigeon had the departure beacon lit before Ralf could reach the transport ship 8.
Recognizing that the attackers intended more than ordinary plunder, Ralf pretended to surrender and persuaded the miners barricaded underground to come out. The prisoners condemned him as a traitor, while Ralf feared that House Flint might later punish his apparent collaboration 8 11.
He cultivated the clan warriors with alcohol, gifts, and venison seasoned with Sweet Sleep Flower. His questioning revealed that Bel was seeking treasure promised by the clan’s god, Be’lakor. Ralf continued investigating despite having opportunities to attempt a rescue, hoping to understand the danger before acting 11.
After witnessing the clan’s ritual, Ralf was forced to drink Bloodwine and taken into the Blackstone Ruins. There he discovered that Bel was sacrificing people and that the captive miners had become vacant and unresponsive 16.
Escape from the Blackstone Ruins
When Bel’s scream broke the miners’ stupor, Ralf passed them a concealed dagger and led an attack on their captors. As slain warriors began rising as Wights, he ordered several miners to secure the exit and organized the others into three lines for withdrawal 16.
Ralf and Thin Pigeon stood at the front of the group, but the Wights remained motionless. Ralf then saw a winged, horned demon that Thin Pigeon could not perceive. Thin Pigeon had foremen carry him out of the ruins while the miners escaped 17.
Service at the Alchemy Workshop
Following his magical awakening, Ralf helped Eddard construct Magic Energy Number One. He supplied blood used with Ice Dragonglass and Valyrian steel during the coating of the engine’s cylinder and piston, then received responsibility for the workshops 28.
At the Alchemy Workshop, he maintained the lime kiln’s modified magic array and was asked to operate a new rotary furnace. He initially hesitated because he feared damaging the iron-intensive machinery and losing his standing in House Flint. Eddard’s reassurance strengthened his loyalty 31.
Later, his bloodline destabilized during a visit by the Red Priestess Sinvara. Eddard found no evidence that she had attacked him; her presence appeared to have provoked the Demon Child within him. Eddard suppressed the outbreak and entrusted the problem to the White Holy Tree 40.
The assignment of trained rune wizards to local departments subsequently eased Ralf’s workload. He remained head of the Alchemy Workshop while participating in Eddard’s experiments with Magma Demon summoning 47 49.
Appearance
- Ordinary appearance: Thin, small, and shifty-looking, with a body described as frail enough to seem vulnerable to a gust of wind 25.
- Demonic eyes: Vertical pupils surrounded by fine scales; their dark centers resemble volcanoes about to erupt 25.
- Advancing transformation: Demonic scales began growing in additional places as workshop heat accelerated his bloodline’s awakening 40.
- Magma fusion: Cracks spread across his skin, appearing as though lava and flames might burst through them 49.
Personality
Ralf initially combines laziness, greed, and a strong instinct for self-preservation. He neglects his mining duties, embezzles gems, and is visibly terrified by Bel. Nevertheless, he notices inconsistencies in the clan’s behavior and uses apparent submission to investigate rather than simply abandoning the other captives 8 11.
His resourcefulness becomes clearest under pressure. Despite his fear, he arms the miners, initiates their revolt, and imposes order when the dead begin rising. His bravery is imperfect: the actual sight of the Wights quickly weakens his initial confidence 16 17.
Eddard’s trust gives Ralf a stronger sense of loyalty and purpose. He becomes determined to fulfill his lord’s requests and later expresses an ambition to overcome the limitations of his bloodline. Demonic power also brings intoxicating satisfaction, making restraint an ongoing concern 25 31 49.
Abilities & Skills
Supernatural Perception
Ralf can perceive supernatural forms and energies that ordinary observers cannot see 17 25.
- Sees the demon at the Blackstone Ruins while Thin Pigeon sees only Wights 17.
- Briefly glimpses Eddard’s monstrous appearance, though less clearly than “One-Eye” Billy 21.
- After awakening his demonic eyes, perceives energy as smoke within a distorted, hazy world 25.
Demon Child Bloodline
His implanted Demon Child Soul grants a small amount of mental power and supports demonic spellcasting 25 28.
- His bleeding stops quickly after he cuts his wrist to supply blood for Eddard’s engine-making work 28.
- Controls Ice and Fire Dragonglass more effectively than Bran, whose talents favor producing it 28.
- Heat accelerates his bloodline’s awakening, but insufficient integration with the Demon Child Soul can cause his power to run wild 40.
- Eddard identifies defeating and consuming the Demon Child Soul in the Dream World as the solution to his unstable fusion; the confrontation itself is not shown in the supplied account 40.
Dragonglass and Industrial Magic
Ralf applies magic to heating, metalworking, and lime production 28 31.
- Learns to use perception in making Fire-attribute Dragonglass 27.
- Maintains the modified Summoning Magic Array’s spatial containment function, helping prevent the lime kiln from burning out 31.
- Can activate Fire Dragonglass at intermediate intensity, sufficient for iron smelting and crude cement production 31.
- Cannot reproduce Eddard’s high-intensity activation capable of melting Valyrian steel 31.
Demon Summoning and Fusion
Ralf’s summoning develops from a dangerous early success into a new bloodline ability 28 49.
- Personally summons a Dragonglass Lesser Demon, though it nearly tears him apart 28.
- Summons a Magma Demon through equivalent exchange, aided by the souls of Children of the Forest and Fire Dragonglass; the dragonglass crumbles during the spell 49.
- Merges with the summoned Magma Demon, gaining an intense sensation of increased power 49.
- His belief that he could melt steel is explicitly corrected by Eddard as an illusion caused by uncontrolled demonic power. The summoned demon is weaker than Ralf himself 49.
Deception and Information Gathering
- Builds trust through food, drink, gifts, and carefully staged conversation 11.
- Uses Sweet Sleep Flower to impair targets and encourage disclosure; the preparation stolen from Albert produces a drunkenness-like effect rather than the full poison’s lethal effect 11.
- Extracts the purpose of Bel’s occupation and information about the clan’s supernatural patron 11.

- Rickard “Scar” Flint — Cousin and former superior. Ralf’s information-gathering talents earned Rickard’s trust and contributed to his appointment at the mine 8 11.
- Bran “Housecat” Flint — Fellow pioneer of Eddard’s magical awakening experiments. They train together before taking responsibility for the workshops and mines respectively 25 26 28.
- Thin Pigeon — Initially disliked for ordering Ralf around. Later fights beside him during the miners’ escape and arranges for him to be carried out of the ruins 8 16 17.
- Maester Albert — Source of Ralf’s stolen Sweet Sleep Flower and a collaborator in Eddard’s magical-industrial experiments. Bandages Ralf after his blood donation 11 28.
- White Holy Tree — Teaches Ralf to use his powers in the Dream World and is later entrusted with his unstable soul-fusion problem 26 27 40.
