Background / History

Withdrawal from Konoha

Tsunade rarely stayed in Konoha after the Second Shinobi World War. Her wartime losses left her unwilling to involve herself with the village or the Hokage position, and her fear of blood prevented her from continuing her work as a medical ninja 11 12.

While away, she traveled with Shizune and spent considerable time gambling. Hiruzen Sarutobi wanted her to return, both for her abilities and for the stability her reputation could bring to Konoha 3 9 12.

Return and Apprenticeship

Shihui Aburame sought Tsunade as both a medical teacher and a powerful protector. Through his father, Shibi Aburame, he arranged an apprenticeship request with a generous payment. Tsunade answered with a condition: Shihui had to learn the Chakra Scalpel within one month before she would consider returning 3.

After receiving Hiruzen’s report that a six-year-old had met her condition, Tsunade suspected a trick but returned to investigate. She initially agreed to teach Shihui for only two days. His demonstrated medical talent and extraordinary physical strength then convinced her that he could inherit her skills 9 11 12.

Her instruction developed into an ongoing apprenticeship at the former Senju residence. Although she remained reluctant to take part in village affairs, training Shihui became a personal priority 13 17 32.

Appearance

Personality

Tsunade is forceful, impatient, and quick to express irritation physically. She kicks open Hiruzen’s office door when demanding to meet Shihui and punches away a persistent noble seeking surgery. Her temper also surfaces when Shihui jokes about her finances and gambling 11 27 42 45.

She readily accepts wagers despite her consistently poor luck. Shizune has never seen her win, and Tsunade sometimes blames Konoha for losses that Shizune considers entirely typical. She also enjoys alcohol enough to delegate a lesson to Shizune after receiving Shihui’s nectar wine 13 21 22.

As a teacher, she rejects shortcuts in medical training and becomes serious when discussing a medic’s responsibilities. She recognizes Shihui’s talent without letting him become complacent, adjusts instruction to his abilities, and respects his preference when choosing his next technique 13 16 43 44.

Her affection is usually expressed through teasing, head pats, and protective gestures rather than open praise. As she grows closer to Shihui, she dries his hair, brings him milk, slows her walking pace for him, and carries him when he is exhausted. Shizune notices that he makes her laugh in a way she has not heard for a long time 26 27 33 44 45 46.

Medical Ninjutsu

Tsunade is regarded as the strongest medical ninja and a benchmark against which other medical talents are measured. Her fear of blood prevents her from performing surgery, but she remains capable of examination and instruction 8 12 27 43.
