Power Progression
Documented Cultivation
Gu Masters have nine major ranks, each divided into initial, middle, upper, and peak stages. Rank Five is the pinnacle of mortal cultivation; Rank Six marks the transition to Gu Immortal 3 41 217.
The following milestones document Shihui Aburame’s advancement through this system.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rank One | 41 | Retrospectively revealed to have begun when the system used Hope Gu to open his aperture after reincarnation. He began attempting cultivation at three or four years old. |
| Rank One, middle stage | 41 | His Liquor Worm refined his essence to upper-stage potency without changing his actual cultivation stage. |
| Rank One, upper stage | 65 | Advanced from middle stage using a Bronze Relic Gu. |
| Rank Two, initial stage | 103 | Advanced through accumulated cultivation. His primeval essence became red steel essence. |
| Rank Four, upper stage | 174 | Reached after three years cultivating in Rōran without Primeval Stones or comparable external resources. |
| Rank Five, initial stage | 217 | Repeatedly washed his aperture with primeval essence until it changed to a pale-purple, crystal-like hue. |
| Rank Five, middle stage | 229 | Used a Purple Crystal Relic Gu obtained after defeating Sasori. |
| Rank Five, upper stage | 256 | Identified as his stage immediately before using another Purple Crystal Relic Gu; the intervening breakthrough is not described. |
| Rank Five, peak stage | 256 | Advanced from upper stage using the Purple Crystal Relic Gu. |
| Rank Six Gu Immortal | 282 | Balanced heaven, earth, and human qi to form a super-grade blessed land exceeding ten million mu, with fifty beads of green grape immortal essence. |
Documented Gu Advancements
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rank Two White Jade Gu | 41 | Refined from Jade Skin Gu, White Boar Gu, and suitable wild boar tusks. Provides more than twice Jade Skin Gu’s defense. |
| Rank Two Moon Raiment Gu | 41 | Refined from Moonlight Gu and two Little Light Gu. Has three times Moonlight Gu’s attack power. |
| Rank Two Four Flavors Liquor Worm | 103 | Advanced from the Liquor Worm after Shihui reached Rank Two. Refines Rank Two essence upward by one minor stage. |
| Rank Six All-Out Effort Gu | 282 | Selected for advancement into Immortal Gu during Shihui’s immortal ascension. |
| Rank Six Borrow Strength Gu | 282 | Also advanced during immortal ascension; its improved rank later strengthens Six Arm Heavenly Zombie King. |
Nature and Operation
Forms and Wills
- Gu are not exclusively insects. Wine Sack Flower Gu is a plant, while Three Star Cave is a Gu worm that grows into an enormous habitable tree 13 113.
- Their appearances vary considerably. Moonlight Gu resembles translucent, moonlit jade; the Liquor Worm resembles a pearly silkworm; White Jade Gu resembles a smooth, lustrous pebble 4 41.
- Natural Gu possess wills. Subduing one requires erasing its will, a dangerous process. Gu supplied by Shihui’s achievement system lack wills and function as tools 2.
- Reusable and consumable Gu both exist. A consumable Gu may grant either a temporary effect, such as Flower Boar Gu’s strength boost, or a permanent alteration, such as Iron Bone Gu’s reinforcement 31 136.
Primeval Essence and the Aperture
- Primeval essence activates Gu. It combines the user’s vital energy with heaven-and-earth primordial essence, identified in the Shinobi World as natural energy. Shihui initially compares it to an extremely weakened form of senjutsu chakra 1.
- The aperture stores essence and Gu. Shihui’s Rank One aperture contains a bronze sea whose individual drops are condensed primeval essence 2.
- Cultivation strengthens the aperture. Gu Masters repeatedly scour its walls with primeval essence; Shihui initially replenishes his reserves by absorbing surrounding energy because he has not found Primeval Stones 3.
- Higher ranks improve essence quality. One portion of Rank Two red steel essence is comparable to ten portions of Rank One green copper essence 103.
- Control also consumes mental stamina. Prolonged use of Gu causes exhaustion even when essence remains available 174.
Rank and Practical Limits
- Gu rank and user rank are separate. Shihui possesses Rank Five Rejuvenation Gu while still a Rank One Gu Master 1 41.
- Higher-ranked Gu can exceed a user’s sustainable output. Shihui initially postpones refining White Jade Gu because of its essence requirements; the Liquor Worm later lets him barely operate Rank Two Gu early 21 41.
- Using Gu above one’s rank can restrict performance. As a Rank Two Gu Master, Shihui struggles to extend his Rank Three Mist Finch’s reconnaissance beyond Konoha’s boundary 113.
- Specialization can outweigh rank. The Rank One Liquor Worm is more valuable than some Rank Two Gu, while Lifespan Gu remain exceptionally precious despite their comparatively low ranks 41 235.
- Shadow Clones cannot duplicate Gu. Shihui’s clones lack the aperture required to be Gu Masters, reducing their combat strength by ninety percent 154.
Acquisition and Refinement
Achievement Rewards
- Shihui’s Great Love Immortal Venerable Achievement System awards Gu for completed achievements, beginning with Rejuvenation Gu for his new life and Moonlight Gu for planting Moon Orchids 1.
- Rewards can come from social interactions, training, political changes, or battle outcomes—not just cultivation breakthroughs 2 65 190 229.
- A reward can exceed Shihui’s usable rank. The system holds Flying Bear Strength Gu for him while he remains Rank Five, preventing the Immortal Gu from damaging his aperture 268.
Combined Refinement
- Ingredients can include multiple Gu and ordinary materials. White Jade Gu requires two Gu plus suitable wild boar tusks; its refinement consumes the component Gu 21 41.
- Gu can have branching advancement paths. Moonlight Gu is explicitly described as having several 1.
- An advanced form may replace an obsolete specialization. The Rank One Liquor Worm stops refining essence effectively once its user becomes Rank Two, making Four Flavors Liquor Worm its practical replacement 41 103.
- Recipes can be prohibitively expensive. Hundred-Year Wood Charm normally requires Wood Charm Gu and a Hundred-Year Lifespan Gu—a cost Shihui considers unjustifiable because Lifespan Gu are much more valuable 195.
- Immortal refinement normally requires recipes. During Shihui’s ascension, the system instead permits him to advance two mortal Gu directly 282.
Feeding
| Gu | Feeding Requirement |
|---|---|
| Moonlight Gu | Moon Orchids, which Shihui grows at his home 1. |
| Black Boar Gu and White Boar Gu | Together consume two pigs every five days 21. |
| Jade Skin Gu | Two taels of jade every ten days 19. |
| Liquor Worm | Alcohol; Wine Sack Flower Gu’s nectar wine is suitable food 13 41. |
Abilities and Applications
Strength Enhancement
Gu can permanently modify the body, produce temporary surges of strength, or manifest beast-strength phantoms.
- Black Boar Gu and White Boar Gu: Permanently increase physical strength. Their effects remain even if the Gu dies, and they can be used on different people in turn; White Boar Gu’s enhancement has an upper limit 2 21 51.
- Flower Boar Gu and Brute Force Longhorn Beetle Gu: Consumable strength boosts lasting ten breaths and five breaths respectively 31 51.
- Galloping Horse Strength Gu and White Elephant Primeval Strength Gu: Add corresponding beast-strength phantoms. Their manifestation is not naturally guaranteed 144 146.
- All-Out Effort Gu: Guarantees beast-strength phantom manifestation and the release of the user’s full physical strength 160.
- Group Strength Gu: Gathers collective strength into one body, allowing Shihui to deploy multiple beast-strength phantoms simultaneously 213.
- Borrow Strength Gu: Cannot function alone; paired Gu allow it to draw power from sources such as the heavens, earth, flames, and flowing water 224.
Offense and Battlefield Control
- Moonlight Gu: Releases Moon Blades; Little Light Gu strengthens those attacks 1 41.
- Snow Filling the Sky Gu: Creates an icy domain across thousands of paces. For a Snow Woman Gu user, that environment also strengthens related ice-and-snow abilities 213.
- Fixed Sound Gu: Sends invisible sound waves that bind a target. It must connect to work and can be dodged by sufficiently fast opponents 221.
- Mind Capturing Gu: Temporarily prevents a target from perceiving or thinking, creating combat openings and assisting enslavement 268.
- Death Is Imminent: A Rank Seven Rule Path Immortal Gu that sets a target’s time of death. It cannot affect beings above Rank Seven; Shihui uses it to kill Black Zetsu 311.
Defense and Healing
- Copper Skin Gu, Jade Skin Gu, and White Jade Gu: Provide progressively stronger skin defense 5 19 41.
- Iron Bone Gu: A consumable that permanently makes every bone as hard as steel 136.
- Self-Reliance Gu: Heals its user during combat, with effectiveness increasing alongside the strength cultivated within the body 139.
- Snow Wash Gu: A Rank Four healing Gu specializing in detoxification 168.
- Immortality Grass: Preserves a thread of life, preventing the user’s final breath from fading 166.
- Water Curtain Skyflower Gu: Withstands attacks from Rank Five Gu Masters despite being Rank Four; it helps protect Sunagakure from Deidara’s self-destruction 229 250.
- Genjutsu disruption: Gu inside Shihui’s aperture release primeval essence to break Sasuke’s Sharingan genjutsu, functioning as external helpers comparable to a jinchūriki’s partner 115.
Movement, Concealment, and Reconnaissance
- Mist Finch Gu: Creates a remotely controlled finch that returns information to its user 113.
- Hidden Stone Gu: Grants invisibility but cannot conceal clothing; it can be refined into Hidden Scale Gu 23.
- Trace Concealment and Invisibility Gu: Conceals both the user and their traces. Its stated counters are specific Rank Five investigative Gu or strength reaching Gu Immortal level 268.
- Light Rainbow Gu: Turns its user into light for exceptionally rapid movement. Its speed can exceed the user’s ability to react, making supporting thought-enhancement Gu desirable 151.
- Earth Tunnel Gu: A child-and-mother pair that establishes a teleportation passage between two locations; Shihui also uses it to evacuate wounded shinobi 254 268.
Transformation and Enslavement
- Male Beauty Gu: Alters a male Gu Master’s appearance; Shihui uses it to conceal his identity in Kusagakure 152 194.
- Snow Woman Gu: An Ice Path transformation Gu that turns a female user into a snow woman 129.
- Hundred-Year Wood Charm: Transforms its user into a tree spirit able to replenish energy during battle. Prolonged use beyond its extended fighting window risks erosion into a tree-man body 195.
- Enslavement Gu: A Rank Five consumable used to subdue Orochimaru after Shihui weakens and immobilizes him; successful use is not automatic 190 219.
- Beast Enslavement Gu: Its Rank Seven form controls nonhuman beings. Shihui uses it on Black Zetsu, Mount Myōboku’s leadership, and Kaguya 304 311 315.
- Sea Oath Gu: A Rank Six Immortal Gu enforcing an oath sworn facing the sea. Breaking the oath destroys both body and soul 271.
Lifespan, Storage, and Support
- Lifespan Gu: Extend life without the drawbacks Shihui associates with other longevity methods. Ten-Year Lifespan Gu randomly adds ten to ninety years; Thousand-Year Lifespan Gu adds exactly one thousand 110 237.
- Three Star Cave: A mobile, strongly defended Rank Three Gu House that becomes a tree with three vertically arranged rooms 111.
- Azure Sky Well Gu: A Rank Five storage Gu refined from Azure Sky Gu and Heavenly Well Gu 235.
- White Cloud Cushion Gu: Accelerates cultivation by improving how effectively primeval essence nourishes the aperture 268.
- Effect Amplification Gu: A Rank Five support Gu that increases other Gu’s effects fivefold across different paths, including strength and defense 229.
- Conversion Gu: A Rank Six Immortal Gu that consumes energy to generate random mortal Gu within the immortal aperture after a period of time 288.
Killer Moves
A killer move combines several Gu to produce an effect greater than any component alone. Improving a core Gu can also elevate the resulting move 221 304.
| Killer Move | Principal Gu | Effects and Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Ice Blade Tempest / Ice Blade Storm | Gale Gu, Spinning Heel Gu, Ice Blade Gu | A compound technique Shihui assembles for Hinata 196. |
| Giant Spirit Transformation | Giant Spirit Body Gu, Giant Spirit Heart Gu, Giant Spirit Will Gu | Triples body size, strength, mental stamina, and will; the transformed body glows white 173 174. |
| Golden Rainbow Strike | Rainbow Transformation Gu, Golden Thread Robe Gu, Swallow Wing Gu | Combines the golden-arrow transformation with defensive and wing-based support Gu 205. |
| Six Arm Heavenly Zombie King | Borrow Strength Gu, six great flying zombie Gu, and environmental strength Gu | Increases toughness more than tenfold, removes pain, and grants powerful recovery. Water Strength Gu completes Shihui’s environmental support set 221 246. |
| Immortal Six Arm Heavenly Zombie King | Rank Six Borrow Strength Gu, supported by Rank Seven Strength Immortal Gu | Upgrades the formerly Rank Five move into an Immortal Killer Move 304. |
| Myriad Self First Style: Giant Hand | Self Strength Immortal Gu as a core | An offensive Immortal Killer Move obtained upon Shihui’s ascension 282. |
| Sword Dragon Transformation | Rank Six Dragon Strength and Transformation Immortal Gu; Rank Seven Dragon Breath and Dragon Scale | Transforms Shihui into a dragon and briefly brings him to Rank Seven Gu Immortal-level power 305. |
| Reverse Flow Protection Seal | Self Strength and Perseverance among its core Gu | A defensive Myriad Self style that reflects Kaguya’s Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack. Perseverance helps sustain other Immortal Gu and killer moves 311. |
History in the Shinobi World
Shihui’s Early Use
Shihui first receives Gu through his achievement system and uses Moonlight Gu to drive away Hinata’s bullies. His growing collection supplies abilities outside ordinary ninjutsu, but he initially keeps most of them private 1 48.
To explain their appearance, he plans to present Gu as an unusual kekkei genkai or mutated kikaichū. Tsunade continues to understand them as kikaichū mutations even after becoming a Gu Master herself 48 125 237.
Sharing Gu and Opening Apertures
Shihui begins distributing suitable Gu to people close to him rather than retaining abilities he has outgrown. Hinata receives an ice-and-snow specialization, while plant-type Gu offer Tsunade abilities resembling Wood Release 196 198 204 213.
Tsunade becomes a Gu Master through Human Strength Triumphs over Heaven Gu, which can forcibly open an aperture even in someone lacking cultivation aptitude. Her new aperture makes gathering natural energy markedly easier, and her existing ninja abilities remain compatible with Gu cultivation 217 223 224 288.
Establishing a Gu Master Lineage
After reaching Rank Six, Shihui discovers Hope Gu in a glowing underground river. Combined with Conversion Gu’s ability to produce mortal Gu, this provides a foundation for training Gu Masters beyond his immediate circle 288 289.
Hanabi subsequently awakens a Rank One aperture with B-grade aptitude, matching Hinata’s aptitude. When testing more demanding Gu, she borrows Shihui’s power rather than operating them solely through her own cultivation 293.
Naming Notes
- Azure Sky Gu refers to two differently described Gu in the supplied chapters: a Rank Four storage Gu obtained in Rōran, and a Rank Five bamboo-shaped poison Gu later found in Shihui’s immortal aperture 174 301.
- Enslave Beast Gu and Beast Enslavement Gu have different documented scopes: the Rank Six version controls beasts, while the Rank Seven version explicitly controls nonhuman beings 273 304.
- The author’s explanatory note describes Gu as skills: one Gu can be understood as one ability or ninjutsu 1.
