Background / History

Founding and Madara's departure

Hashirama Senju and Uchiha Madara founded the village near the end of the Warring States Era. They leveled surrounding mountains, opened a passage through the forest, and established the settlement that later expanded across generations. 498

In Hidden Leaf Year 2, Hashirama won the Hokage election by an overwhelming margin. Madara, increasingly isolated from both villagers and his own clan, left the village after no Uchiha agreed to follow him. 3 Shin'yu subsequently returned in secret to steal sealing records from the Hokage Building, using Sharingan hypnosis to bypass Senju guards. 5 6

Madara and Shin'yu's break with the village escalated into direct violence: Shin'yu attacked with his Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo before Madara extracted him from Hashirama's confrontation. 13 They later raided the guarded underground chamber beneath Naka Shrine and freed Uchiha Hikari from her seal. 14 16

Institutional development

Following Madara's departure, Hashirama and Tobirama expanded the village through Land of Fire investment, mission commissions, and a policy of chakra education open to children regardless of clan or social status. 44

• Hidden Leaf Academy — Founded by Tobirama in Hidden Leaf Year 11 to standardize ninja education. Its first class included Hiruzen Sarutobi, Danzō Shimura, Mitokado Homura, Akimichi Torifu, and Uchiha Kagami. 113
• Anbu — Established in Year 12 as the Hidden Leaf Village Assassination Tactics Special Forces. Directly subordinate to the Hokage, its members protect the Hokage, repel infiltrators, conduct reconnaissance, and perform assassinations. 113
• Uzumaki alliance — The village formalized relations with Whirlpool Tide Village in Year 9; its ninja uniforms bore the Uzumaki emblem as a symbol of that alliance. 113

Hashirama died in Hidden Leaf Year 13. His death was announced within the village but withheld from the wider world, after which the leadership elected Tobirama as Second Hokage. 151 171

Later instability

The village's strength declined after Hashirama's death. Tobirama found the major clan heads complacent after years of peace, while most younger elite ninja had not yet reached Kage level. 171

Under Hiruzen, the village eventually recovered from the First Shinobi World War, but became entangled with Hidden Sand and Hidden Stone in Rain Country, whose strategic position made it a contested battlefield. 270 During the later war, Uchiha forces held the western front while Tsunade's medical corps aided Hidden Rain against Hidden Sand. 294

Layout and Landmarks

Konoha is situated among mountains, forests, and clear water. Its streets and buildings spread outward in a fan-shaped arrangement beneath Hokage Rock. 498

• Hokage Rock — The village's spiritual symbol and a restricted sacred site, bearing monumental carvings of its Hokage. 497
• Hokage Building — Administrative center containing guarded archives and hidden chambers that stored sensitive sealing history and forbidden techniques. 5 6

Administration and Security

The Hokage commands the village's military response, intelligence assets, and special forces. During the Chinoike Clan's Human Bomb assault, Hiruzen coordinated the Sensing, Communications, Sealing, and Uchiha forces, explicitly ordering nonlethal containment of controlled civilians. 57

The village employs sensory barriers and dedicated sensing teams to detect abnormal chakra signatures. These defenses identified Kagami when he reappeared in Konoha, though they proved ineffective against elite infiltrators capable of concealing their presence. 498 515

Security failures repeatedly exposed sensitive resources:

• Shin'yu infiltrated the Hokage Building and stole secret scrolls. 6
