Background / History
War of the Ancients
Before his transformation, Illidan was already renowned for his talent in the arcane arts. He and his older brother, Malfurion, rescued Tyrande, Aaron, and Vereesa from a fel lord; Illidan delivered the finishing blow with an enormous meteor. At Black Rook Hold, he fought directly from the wall’s edge rather than sheltering behind it, using precisely targeted spells against the attacking demons 537 745 750.
During the defense, Illidan took command of Moon Guard mages pursuing infiltrating assassins. His superior strength and magical talent gradually won their acceptance. He later stormed out when the resistance selected Jarod as its new commander 754 761.
Illidan accepted fel power to infiltrate the demons and reach the Well of Eternity. Malfurion reacted angrily to his altered condition, while Illidan insisted that his apparent cooperation with the enemy had been necessary. He then guided Aaron’s party through the Eternal Palace and helped recover the Dragon Soul before the group reached the portal through which Sargeras was beginning to emerge 765 766 767.
The novel’s altered history differs from Aaron’s remembered account of Illidan’s attempt to recreate the Well of Eternity. Aaron believed Jarod had intervened and nearly been killed; Shandris instead identified Aaron himself as the person who stopped Illidan 537.
Imprisonment and release
Illidan spent ten thousand years imprisoned under the Watchers. His isolated cell contained overlapping restraints across his body, floor, walls, and ceiling—security exceeding that used for the prison’s greater demons. Aaron infiltrated the prison to ask how the fel-afflicted Shen'dralar could retain control of themselves 533 534.
Illidan’s answer was to strengthen their wills and adapt to fel until they could wield it as their own power. He cited his own resistance as evidence, although Aaron initially found the advice frustratingly simple 534 535.
During the renewed demonic invasion, Tyrande requested the Watchers’ assistance. An existing agreement also entitled Illidan to freedom when the demons returned, compelling Maiev to release him. Her hostility remained, and she continued threatening him even while accompanying him into battle 710.
Battle of Mount Hyjal
After killing a Doomguard and absorbing its fel, Illidan sought out Mannoroth, whom he had failed to kill ten thousand years earlier. He wounded the Pit Lord and fought him at a disadvantage until Aaron and the dragons moved to assist. Malygos ultimately killed Mannoroth, leaving Illidan displeased that his intended prey had been taken from him 710 711 712 713.
Illidan subsequently absorbed the Skull of Gul'dan’s energy and became a true demon. Malfurion told him he would be banished after the war, but Illidan remained focused on killing more demons. He recruited Aaron for a raid on the Legion’s headquarters, disguised him as a Felguard, and killed most of the Dreadlords stationed there 721 722.
Archimonde learned of the raid and pursued them. His attack through a spell projection disrupted Illidan’s fel circulation, demonstrating the gulf between their strength. Illidan turned to the Skull of Gul'dan for help, drawing on it to form a portal 724.
Conquest of Outland
After the battle, Illidan recruited Night Elves for a campaign against the Legion. His plan was to obtain an artifact from the Tomb of Sargeras, acquire further resources in Draenor, and eventually attack Argus. He delayed departure until Aaron joined him because Aaron’s ancient warnings had predicted capture by Kil'jaeden and Maiev if he went alone 777 778.
Illidan secured Lady Vashj’s assistance by promising power to resist the influence responsible for the Naga’s transformation. After reaching the Broken Shore, he recovered the Eye of Sargeras and opened a portal to Outland as Maiev’s Watchers attacked 778 779.
In Outland, Illidan seized Hellfire Citadel, spared and subdued Kargath Bladefist, and retained him under Night Elf and Naga supervision. During the advance toward the Black Temple, Aaron persuaded Illidan to lift the Arakkoa’s curse rather than destroy their settlements. The restored flyers joined his army 782 783 784 789.
Illidan defeated Magtheridon and bound him with the Eye of Sargeras, becoming Outland’s new king. Aaron blocked Maiev’s assassination attempt immediately afterward. Clearing the remaining demons from the Black Temple took more than half a month 791 792.
At Aaron’s urging, Illidan spared Maiev and her Watchers rather than executing them. He sent them through a portal to Azeroth, then began formally training his followers as Demon Hunters 792 793.
Campaign against the Legion
Illidan’s trained Illidari attacked Nathreza, the Dreadlords’ homeworld. He destroyed it by detonating its portal, then used information recovered there to locate the Sargerite Keystone. A subsequent assault captured Mardum and secured the Keystone, allowing preparations for the Argus expedition 836.
Illidan activated the Keystone while Khadgar’s mages helped open the portal that carried the expedition’s five warships to Argus. During the ground campaign, he disguised himself as an ordinary Demon Hunter to fight despite Aaron’s warning to avoid Xe'ra. She recognized him, and their confrontation required intervention from Odyn and Aaron 837 844.
After Sargeras’s imprisonment and the Legion’s collapse, Illidan volunteered to stay on Argus with his Demon Hunters. He intended to turn the planet into a base for exterminating the remaining demons 850.
Appearance
Before becoming a Demon Hunter, Illidan has black hair, golden eyes shining with arcane radiance, and an Arcanist’s robes. His later transformations replace this appearance with a blindfolded fel-user and eventually a towering winged demon 534 745 721.
- Eyes: Burned blind by fel; he does not depend on ordinary eyesight to perceive his surroundings 525 534.
- Demonic form: More than three meters tall and sufficiently similar to a Dreadlord that Legion soldiers hesitate to question him 721 722.
- Wings: Capable of flight, including aerial movement during battle 781 791.
- Signature weapons: Carries the paired Warglaives of Azzinoth 791.
Personality
Illidan is proud, competitive, and eager to demonstrate his strength. During the ancient war, he treats battlefield achievement as a way to win Tyrande’s favor and imagines that becoming the war’s hero might lead her to choose him. Even Gul'dan’s account of raising a fel volcano provokes his reluctance to admit inferiority to a dead man 750 767 789.
His central commitment is destroying demons, regardless of the cost to his reputation or body. He accepts Malfurion’s threatened banishment without apparent concern and derives intense satisfaction from fighting the Legion on Argus 721 844.
He is also impatient and ruthless toward perceived obstacles. Aaron repeatedly restrains his impulse to kill troublesome scouts, expedition soldiers, prisoners, or hostile Arakkoa. Nevertheless, Illidan can accept alternatives when they serve his campaign, including recruiting the Arakkoa and sparing the Watchers 786 787 789 792 793.
Abilities & Skills
Arcane magic
Illidan retains the spellcasting expertise that made him one of the Kaldorei Empire’s foremost young magical prodigies 710.
- Offensive spells: Uses fireballs, precise combat spells, and an enormous arcane-powered meteor 745 750.
- Disguises: Gives Aaron a Felguard’s appearance, fel scent, and sulfurous odor to infiltrate Legion forces 722.
- Utility magic: Effortlessly casts a translation spell on Aaron 710.
- Energy manipulation: Channels the Dragon Soul’s escaping power and combines arcane and fel magic in binding spells 767 791.
Fel mastery and resistance
Illidan withstands fel’s mental influence through exceptional willpower and treats adaptation as the key to controlling it 525 534 535.
- Absorbs fel from slain demons and demonic artifacts 710 721.
- Receives extensive knowledge of demons through Sargeras’s gift, supplemented by his own experience and the Skull of Gul'dan 722 791.
- Remains vulnerable to overwhelming power: Archimonde’s projected attack interferes with his internal fel circulation 724.
- Avoids direct exposure to powerful Holy Light because of the fel within him 712.
Warglaive combat and mobility
Illidan combines close knowledge of demon weaknesses with speed, evasive movement, and paired warglaives 710 791.
- Uses terrain to control an opponent’s attacks and exploit openings 710.
- Attacks beneath Mannoroth’s vulnerable belly after evading his spear 711.
- Defeats elite Doomguards and wounds Magtheridon by darting between his limbs and attacking his back and neck 791.
Enhanced perception
Illidan perceives the world without functioning eyes 534 712.
- Recognizes Aaron by scent despite his magical disguise 534.
- Uses shadow sight to detect the Holy Light overflowing from Malygos 712.
- Recognizes Mannoroth’s voice from a distance despite ten thousand years without contact 711.
Portals, bindings, and curse removal
Illidan’s strongest large-scale workings frequently employ artifacts 779 789 791.
- Opens the Outland gateway with the Skull of Gul'dan and Eye of Sargeras 779.
- Subdues Kargath with a spell and imprisons Magtheridon through a contest of will reinforced by the Eye 783 791.
- Lifts the Arakkoa’s curse with the two artifacts, restoring their ability to fly 789.
- Activates the Sargerite Keystone for the expedition’s passage to Argus 837.
Demon Hunter training
Illidan establishes a training method intended to create hunters who understand demons, overcome their souls, and can regenerate in the Void 793.
- Combat preparation: Recruits learn warglaive fighting and must defeat individual, unrestrained demons themselves.
- Fel ingestion: Survivors consume demonic hearts and blood.
- Transformation ritual: Illidan uses the Eye of Sargeras to place fel runes upon them; their eyes burn away as the power takes hold.
- Cost: At least a tenth of the participants die during the transformation ritual alone, and completing it does not guarantee eventual success.
- Rationale: Illidan rejects safer fel siphoning as a method that would produce Warlocks rather than Demon Hunters 793.
