Background / History

Origins and the Black Empire

Xal'atath claims to have been one of the Black Empire’s leaders. Although she initially describes herself as an Old God, she later qualifies this as being “part of an Old God.” Aaron distinguishes the weapon’s Old God-derived material from the identity of the soul inhabiting it; her status as a genuine fifth Old God is therefore not established 73 209.

She spent tens of thousands of years imprisoned in a dagger forged from part of an Old God’s limb. Despite her confinement, she could perceive events outside and influence others through whispers. Under the Void’s influence, she sought to overthrow the Titans’ order and corrupt Azeroth 104 209 435.

Her schemes included persuading trolls to sacrifice themselves to awaken Kith'ix. During the later journey to Zandalar, she nostalgically recalls inciting the Zandalari to unearth him, an undertaking associated with an attempted return of the Black Empire 435 835.

Natalie Selin

The former Stormwind bishop Natalie Selin discovered Xal'atath while investigating orcs conducting evil rituals. Touching the weapon revealed its name in her mind. Its whispers offered knowledge and power concerning the Void while Natalie’s notes became increasingly incoherent 40.

Xal'atath drove Natalie mad and tempted her followers into murdering her. Those followers subsequently committed repeated sacrificial atrocities in Eastweald 40 85.

Encounter with Aaron

When Aaron grasped the dagger, Xal'atath claimed to know his secrets and prevented him from dropping it. The Holy Light within him erupted as the being behind his powers fought her through his body. Aaron lost consciousness and experienced repeated nightmare deaths; Xal'atath later admits that she used illusions during his earlier unconsciousness in an attempt to control his mind 45 377.

The confrontation broke the dagger and stripped its remaining hilt of shadow properties. When Xal'atath subsequently revealed herself, she possessed a luminous, elf-like form and confirmed that she had been freed from the blade—but not granted complete freedom 46 56 73.

Appearance

  • Elf-like spirit: Resembles a High Elf, with long ears and an insubstantial body 73.
  • Hair and complexion: Exceptionally fair skin and long white hair with a faint golden glow. The ends of her hair merge into moving, tentacle-like strands 73.
  • Val'kyr presentation: Broad golden wings, a body formed from Holy Light, and a smooth mask covering the upper face. Wing-shaped ornaments extend backward from the mask’s sides 73 104 105.
  • Adjustable size and clothing: Can change her manifested clothing and enlarge herself from approximately human size to the size of a female Vrykul 105.
  • Silver disguise: Can recolor her Holy Light body from gold to silvery white; the change takes about ten minutes during the Valkyrion infiltration 400.

Personality

Xal'atath is proud, sharp-tongued, and habitually manipulative. She bargains over assistance, demands that Aaron ask properly for help, and retaliates against him through embarrassing pranks. After negotiating access to the outside world, she immediately appears in revealing clothing and pretends that Aaron requested it, provoking Vereesa’s suspicion 104 105 208.

Her transformation does not erase her darker instincts. She treats forcibly recruiting Val'kyr as an opportunity to bully them and proposes taking over Garona’s control spell rather than removing it. She also questions Aaron’s assumption that the Holy Light is beyond criticism 332 495 540.

Her resentment centers on captivity and the loss of her body. Seeing magically reduced beasts reminds her of being forged into a dagger, prompting a rare admission of grief. Later, she deliberately becomes unhelpful in the hope that Aaron will replace her with another Val'kyr and send her away 209 608.

Nevertheless, she repeatedly protects him at personal cost. She expends her manifestation’s strength against Zakajz, disrupts Ner'zhul during Aaron’s escape, and authorizes Aaron to use the Holy Light sustaining her existence when Sargeras threatens to enter Azeroth 155 650 769.

Abilities & Skills

Mental Manipulation and Illusions

Xal'atath specializes in influencing perception, emotion, and behavior 40 208 372.

  • Corrupting whispers: Offers knowledge and power while drawing listeners toward madness and atrocities, as demonstrated with Natalie and her followers 40 85.
  • Nightmare illusions: Torments Aaron with illusions while attempting to control his mind 377.
  • Mass interference: Turns nearly half of a pursuing flock against the others with a glance, causing the attackers to destroy one another 208.
  • Psychological suggestion: Reinforces disguises and false information without relying solely on continuously maintained mind control 400 403 613.
  • Direct control and interrogation: Controls Yegoda while questioning her and places the acolytes Andrew and Edward under mind control for Aaron 540 600.
  • Limits: The attacking birds are unusually vulnerable because troll conditioning has reduced them to near-mindless puppets. Aaron does not assume she can repeat the feat against mentally resistant enemies or Lich King-controlled gargoyles 209 213.

Breaking Undead Domination

Xal'atath can sever the Lich King’s control by reading an undead subject’s memories and amplifying deeply rooted emotions 301 372.

  • Frees Sindragosa by intensifying her hatred of Malygos 300 301.
  • Uses the same approach on a captured lich after examining his experiences before and after death 371 372.
  • Risk: Freedom from Ner'zhul does not guarantee loyalty or emotional stability. Sindragosa becomes violently unstable, and Xal'atath warns that another subject might also go mad 371.

Holy Light Projection and Flight

Her external body is a projection made from Holy Light rather than her true body leaving Aaron’s mental prison 104 400.

  • Manifests wings and flies independently; her wings also provide Aaron with increased mobility during the battle against Zakajz 105 154.
  • Changes size, clothing, and coloration to impersonate different Val'kyr 105 400.
  • Reinforces the Thorn of the Holy Light to break a stalemate against Zakajz’s shadow power 155.
  • Power dependence: Her vitality recovers when Aaron recovers, supporting her statement that she draws power from him 156.
  • Lost capability: She states that, before becoming a Holy Light creature, she could have attempted to absorb Zakajz’s shadow power 154.

Possession and Emergency Protection

Xal'atath can temporarily control Aaron’s body, including with his permission 386.

  • Demonstrates physical capabilities that prompt Aaron to explore strengthening his own body with Holy Light 106.
  • Takes over during the confrontation with Ner'zhul and uses Aaron’s weapon to cut through the enclosing bone giant 649 650.
  • Disrupts Ner'zhul after he pulls at her soul, giving Aaron an opening to escape 650.
  • Cost: The encounter leaves her unresponsive and resting with closed eyes in Aaron’s mental space afterward 652.

Soul Preservation and Transfer

Xal'atath preserves endangered souls and routes them through Aaron’s mental space to Azeroth or the Halls of Valor 156 494.

  • Stops Thoradin’s soul from fading and offers him service protecting Azeroth in the Halls of Valor 156.
  • Transfers a serpent Loa’s soul through a pillar of light connected to Aaron 250.
  • Finds Tortheldrin among corrupted soul fragments, stabilizes him with nature power, and sends him to Azeroth 494.
  • Gathers Anasterian’s fragmented soul, but respects his refusal of eternal life 675.
  • Warns that transporting Algalon would be different from previous transfers because he is a complete being, not merely a soul 428.
  • Unconfirmed ability: She refuses to give Aaron a straight answer when asked whether she can restore someone to ordinary life rather than undeath 288.

Val'kyr Conversion

Xal'atath captures and converts Val'kyr serving hostile powers to Azeroth’s side 288 328 403.

  • Transforms Annhylde into a golden Val'kyr and recruits her 288.
  • Binds Aradne with golden runes before her conversion 328 332.
  • Converts more than a hundred captured Val'kyr at Valkyrion in three days with Annhylde and Aradne’s assistance 403.

Knowledge, Languages, and Communication

Her tens of thousands of years of experience make her a source of magical, historical, and linguistic knowledge 461 536.

  • Languages: Translates Tauren speech and states that she also knows the Murlocs’ Aquatic 461.
  • Magical analysis: Distinguishes mental suggestion from ongoing mind control and identifies a death-magic connection between Valkyrion’s ritual circle and Ner'zhul 403 613.
  • Old God expertise: Detects the approaching naga’s connection to N'Zoth and provides expertise concerning the concealed domain of Ny'alotha 77 831.
  • Information transfer: Uses golden light to convey information to Archaedas and later shows Ra-den events that occurred during his imprisonment 185 820.
  • Liaison work: Relays Azeroth’s instructions, helps Aaron contact Archaedas, and receives the Tidestone from Azeroth for delivery 265 479 575.

Confinement and Weaknesses

Restriction Effect
Mental prison Confined to a roughly ten-meter cube within Aaron’s mind, enclosed by golden barriers. Neither she nor the untrained Aaron can access its other regions 104.
Emergency exit The prison’s door opens only when Aaron faces danger beyond his ability to handle. Its golden defenses strike Xal'atath when she attempts to force access 104.
Controlled observation A window permits observation and external projection. Aaron can close it, giving him leverage over her cooperation 104 377.
Sensory dependence Aaron concludes that her awareness of the outside world depends on his senses 111.
Soul-targeting attacks The white flames at Ygrim’s gate destroy her projection and injure her soul, leaving her too weak to fight Ygrim for Aaron 121 125.
Renewed Void corruption Ny'alotha strongly affects her Old God-derived nature. She limits her activity there because attracting N'Zoth’s attention could cause her to turn back to darkness 832.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Xal'atath, Blade of the Black Empire — Her former prison, a sentient shadow dagger made from an Old God’s limb. Its destruction releases her from the weapon but leads to confinement within Aaron instead 46 73 104 435.
  • Thorn of the Holy Light — The purified remnant of the dagger, wielded by Aaron. Supplying Holy Light produces an approximately arm-length blade that can persist for about half an hour after the supply stops. Xal'atath later channels power through it against Zakajz 56 155.

Relationships

  • Aaron — Former target turned host and long-term companion. Their cooperation combines mutual dependence, bargaining, insults, and repeated rescues. He refuses to replace her despite her attempts to make him send her away 45 104 608 650.
  • Azeroth — Her superior and the power behind her work alongside Aaron. Xal'atath treats her with unusual reverence but repeatedly resents being kept bound to Aaron 389 403 608.
  • Vereesa Windrunner — Initially a target of Xal'atath’s teasing through staged misunderstandings about Aaron. They later become friendly, and Xal'atath reassures her during Aaron’s struggle with Frostmourne 105 109 377.
  • Stellagosa — Becomes friendly with Xal'atath during their travels despite Xal'atath’s frequent mockery of Aaron 109.
  • Natalie Selin — Former wielder whom Xal'atath drove mad; she also induced Natalie’s followers to murder her 40 85.
  • Annhylde and Aradne — Converted Val'kyr who later assist her in changing the allegiance of Valkyrion’s captives. Aradne remains openly resentful and afraid of her 288 332 403.
  • Ner'zhul — Enemy whose domination she can break. Their direct confrontation during Aaron’s escape leaves her exhausted 301 372 650 652.
