First Appearance Chapter 21

Background / History

Li Yunwei played Calamity before it merged with reality. After the merger, she became a recognizable law enforcement officer in Linhai City: students knew her from television and credited her with leading numerous monster-clearing operations 21 25.

Her father works for Dragon Country’s General Security Bureau. She later uses his access privileges to help secure Chen Nian’s personal records 69.

Linhai University Recruitment

Li Yunwei attended Linhai University’s combat assessment with her unit to scout recruits. Although Sun Jing earned an A rating, she recognized that instructor Jiang Lie had deliberately gone easy on him and declined the principal’s suggestion to train him 21.

Chen Nian attracted her attention by withstanding Jiang Lie’s unusually powerful qigong attack and knocking him unconscious with one punch. She applauded the result and publicly confirmed that Jiang Lie’s attack could have crippled Chen Nian had he been weaker 22 23.

She then offered Chen Nian official benefits and development support. When he proposed merely joining the roster and reporting when available, she made an exception and accepted. Her colleagues noted that this was the first time she had personally recruited someone; she selected no other trainees that day 23.

World Boss Emergency

When a world boss appeared outside Linhai City, Li Yunwei explained that failing to defeat it within one day would bring the Blood Moon Calamity forward. She helped mobilize volunteers and contacted Chen Nian, who said he was away in Lu City and could not return 25.

As commander-in-chief of the raid, she recognized that the assembled fighters lacked sufficient damage output. She personally approached level-70 guild leader Chu Long and immediately accepted his demand for one hundred million to bring his guild into the battle 28.

Chu Long also failed to penetrate the Mountain-Carrying Turtle’s defenses. After a night of unsuccessful fighting, Li Yunwei blocked his guild’s attempted retreat, challenging their decision to abandon those still fighting. Once the boss was killed, she concluded that Buyu had intervened and realized that the legendary player might be in Linhai City 28 30.

Investigation of Chen Nian

When Qin Yu reported the theft of her epic equipment, Li Yunwei declined to take the case. She explained that more than a thousand loot disputes and incidents of infighting had occurred since the merger, exceeding the Bureau’s capacity to handle them all 32.

She nevertheless informed Chen Nian about the theft and warned him against recklessly confronting Chu Long. During their conversation, she caught inconsistencies in Chen Nian’s account of the world boss battle. A subsequent records check found his flight to Lu City but no recorded return flight, prompting her to investigate further 32.

Li Yunwei secretly watched Qin Yu’s confrontation with Chu Long’s guild at the docks, hoping to test Chen Nian’s abilities. She recognized that Xiao Cheng’s sudden strength came from someone controlling him, but could not locate the hidden operator 32 33 34.

Afterward, she called Chen Nian and requested an immediate selfie to verify his claim that he was home. When he deflected the request, she had the Bureau trace his phone and discovered that he was near the docks. She declined a colleague’s suggestion to arrest him and chose to handle the matter herself 35.

Her investigation continued quietly. She later connected Chen Nian’s travel from Linhai City to Jiangcheng with Buyu’s appearance there to defeat a Calamity Beast. Suspecting that they were the same person, she encrypted Chen Nian’s Bureau records before arranging a dungeon expedition intended to confirm her theory 69.

Calamity Beast Investigation

Li Yunwei later entered a valley with armed officers and support from two armed helicopters after witnesses reported someone summoning three Calamity Beasts. Her team instead discovered the beasts’ remains and found that every other monster in the area had also been killed 38 39.

The lack of a substantial battlefield led her to conclude that the beasts had been slaughtered with almost no opportunity to resist. Suspecting Buyu, she ordered a withdrawal rather than risk angering the unknown expert through an intrusive search. She hoped he would also fight when the Blood Moon Calamity arrived 39.

Moonlight Palace Expedition and Identity Confirmation

Li Yunwei invited Chen Nian to explore a newly discovered high-level dungeon with an elite party that included two second-tier Transcendents. She readily accepted his request to bring Qin Yu and arranged to meet at the train station at eight that evening. Privately, confirming his identity was as important to her as clearing the dungeon 69.

The eight-person party included Li Yunwei, Chen Nian, Qin Yu, and five elite Transcendents, among them the second-tier Paladin Qian Meng and Thunder Shadow Warrior Jiang Yunlei. When several members mocked Qin Yu and provoked Chen Nian, Li Yunwei tried to prevent the conflict from escalating, fearing that Chen Nian might kill them. She led the group to the hidden entrance and explained that a level-90 team had already gone missing there 70.

During the Moonlight Wolf King’s challenge, Jiang Yunlei and Qian Meng failed their attempts, leaving the party’s survival dependent on the final round. Li Yunwei calmly accepted Chen Nian’s decision to take it. His easy victory reinforced her suspicions, and she did not believe his subsequent claim that using a Calamity Gem had left him weakened 72 73.

When Qian Meng and the others demanded Chen Nian’s Moonlight Wolf Ring, Li Yunwei defended his right to the reward, pointing out that he had saved their lives. After Jiang Yunlei knocked Qin Yu unconscious and the others threatened the couple, she stepped aside. She later refused Qian Meng’s plea for rescue, explaining that she had already warned them 74 75.

Li Yunwei finally asked Chen Nian directly whether he was Buyu. After he killed four attackers with the Death God Domain, he acknowledged her discovery by asking how she had identified him. She explained that she had pieced together his irregularities over time and assured him that his information had already been placed under the highest clearance level, inaccessible to ordinary people 75 76.

Although Chen Nian remarked that he had killed the elites she brought, Li Yunwei did not condemn him. She stated that humanity should unite against the Calamity but that some people still needed to be purged. She agreed to keep his identity secret, take Qin Yu home, and tell her that Li Yunwei had talked the party out of a fight 76.

Blood Moon Calamity Defense

Before the Blood Moon Calamity, Li Yunwei helped organize military defenses outside Linhai City and assign participating Transcendents to suitable positions. She repeatedly tried to contact Chen Nian and became increasingly anxious when he remained unreachable. Knowing his identity, she estimated that his presence would improve the city’s survival prospects by at least thirty percentage points—an advantage that even another thousand Transcendents could not replace 80.

As field commander, she initially ordered conventional ground forces and aerial bombardment to handle the weakest monsters, conserving the Transcendents’ power for later waves. When level-40 to level-50 monsters arrived, she relayed the order to move ordinary combat personnel into logistics and mobilized nearly five thousand Transcendents to defend the front line 82 83.

Chen Nian’s return brought her considerable relief. As the battle escalated, she examined reports of Demon God Rank Calamity Beasts devastating foreign cities and warned that the creature emerging from the stone coffin might surpass the Calamity Demon Generals 86 88.

When monster teleportation arrays appeared inside Linhai City, Li Yunwei broadcast an appeal to the remaining Transcendents who had avoided the front lines. She reminded them that ordinary people were already fighting to protect them and urged them to find the courage to resist. Her appeal mobilized the city’s remaining fighting force against the monsters attacking civilians 88.

During Chen Nian’s confrontation with the Twin Demon God, she ordered drone footage of his overwhelming counterattack broadcast throughout Linhai City, allowing both civilians and Transcendents to watch 90.

Promotion and Commendation

Li Yunwei’s performance commanding the Blood Moon Calamity defenses earned her promotion to Deputy Director. She learned of the promotion while preparing a commendation banner for Chen Nian and still insisted on delivering it personally rather than delegating the task 96.

She believed Chen Nian deserved national recognition, but his wish to conceal his identity limited how openly she could honor him. She therefore described his contribution to colleagues as the successful completion of a special assignment and set out for his university’s commendation ceremony 96.

After the ceremony, she helped keep people seeking Chen Nian’s contact information away from him and requested a private conversation. In a deserted corridor, she assured him that she carried no communication or recording devices, then formally saluted him in thanks 98.

Humanoid Calamity Beast Infiltration

During their private conversation, Li Yunwei warned Chen Nian that reports from other places suggested Humanoid Calamity Beasts might have infiltrated the city. Xia Wen’s scream then drew them to an incident involving Zhao Wenqiang, whom Xia Wen claimed to have seen swallowed alive despite his apparently unharmed appearance 98.

Li Yunwei initially prepared to leave when the incident appeared to be a couple’s dispute, but Chen Nian stopped her and challenged Zhao Wenqiang’s humanity. When Chen Nian attacked him, she prevented two officers from intervening. The following morning, she thanked Chen Nian and reported preliminary findings that multiple humanoid Calamity Beasts were likely operating as an organization and learning about humans by infiltrating their lives 98 99.

After Chen Nian rescued Ning Ziqing and slaughtered a group of humanoid Calamity Beasts, he called Li Yunwei to send officers to the hideout and arrange the girl’s return home. Her team found the dead beasts, and Li Yunwei remarked that Chen Nian had acted despite previously saying he would not help them 101.

Later Cooperation with Chen Nian

When Chen Nian could not contact Su Jinyu, he asked Li Yunwei to help locate her phone while he searched Linhai City with Heavenly Eye 142.

Later, Chen Nian arranged for Heizi to send Li Yunwei an anonymous text containing the location of Jack the Ripper’s body. Although she questioned why a criminal believed to be in Lu City would appear in Linhai City, she personally investigated the address rather than dismissing the message as a prank 257.

Her team discovered murdered villagers and then Jack’s corpse. Li Yunwei recognized that Chen Nian had killed him and had effectively handed her a major achievement. Rather than claiming the kill, she instructed her subordinates to report that Buyu was responsible, astonishing them with her connection to the famous player. She remained a Deputy Director at this time 257.

During Chen Nian’s battle with the Skybreaking Demon God above Linhai City, Li Yunwei directed the evacuation of nearby civilians. When the falling Demon God approached, she warned her squad to prepare for impact. The law enforcement Transcendents contained the surrounding shock waves, and the squad subsequently confirmed the Demon God’s death 272.

Appearance

  • Hair: Worn in a high ponytail 32.
  • Clothing: A crisp camouflage uniform and military leather boots 28 32.
  • Bearing: Described as striking and smartly dressed; her strength and dashing appearance impress both male and female students 21 28 32.

Personality

Li Yunwei is direct and pragmatic. During the world boss emergency, she wastes little time on pleasantries, immediately accepts Chu Long’s price, and ends her call with Chen Nian once he says he cannot return. Her refusal to handle Qin Yu’s loot dispute likewise reflects the Bureau’s limited resources rather than doubt that the theft occurred 25 28 32.

She values demonstrated ability over inflated assessments, dismissing Sun Jing’s staged performance while making an unusual recruitment exception for Chen Nian. Her curiosity is persistent but tempered by caution: she investigates Chen Nian’s inconsistencies, yet refuses to pursue an unidentified powerhouse blindly 21 23 32 35 39.

Her determination to uncover Chen Nian’s identity is accompanied by discretion. Before obtaining his confirmation, she secures his records; afterward, she honors his request for secrecy and takes additional precautions when thanking him privately 69 76 98.

She is committed to collective defense but does not consider powerful fighters exempt from consequences. Despite the coming Blood Moon Calamity, she refuses to rescue the dungeon companions who attacked Chen Nian and Qin Yu, rejecting their claim that their value to society should spare them 75 76.

Her professionalism also appears in her response to mass casualties abroad, which she treats gravely, and her willingness to investigate an anonymous report even if it might be a prank. Although Chen Nian gives her an opportunity to earn merit through Jack the Ripper’s discovery, she explicitly credits Buyu with the kill 88 257.
