Power Progression

The following records Chen Nian's documented Word Spirit acquisitions and upgrades after the merger. Entries marked “by” record confirmed possession rather than an explicitly shown acquisition.

Mechanics

Activation and Classification

• Spoken activation: Chen Nian invokes Word Spirits through obscure, incomprehensible syllables that produce effects such as invisible blades, lightning, and summoned creatures 2 3 17.
• Numbered Sequences: Each documented numbered Word Spirit has a Sequence designation. A low Sequence number does not exclude rarity or utility: Sequence 30 and Sequence 53 are both rare abilities 11 39.
• Tier-specific ultimate abilities: Lion Flame, Thunder Dragon, Peng Wind, and Water Flood Dragon are identified by tier rather than a disclosed Sequence number. These ultimate Word Spirits are stronger than ordinary abilities but less powerful than high-risk rare Word Spirits such as Judgment 121 140 225 447.
• Multiple abilities: Chen Nian can use several compatible Word Spirits together. During his descent toward the world boss, he uses Void-Escaping Spirit Snake, Eagle Eye, Flame Explosion, and Golden Sword of Judgment over the course of the approach 29.
• Compatibility restriction: Golden Sword of Judgment must be used alone, unlike Illusory Space Technique, which can be used alongside other Word Spirits. Against the Twin Demon God, Chen Nian drops Judgment before switching to other attacks 78 116.
• Combined elemental attacks: Flame Explosion, Flash Lightning, and Wind Demon Slash can strike a target simultaneously 34.
• Stat interaction: The Transcendence attribute affects supernatural powers. Chen Nian's displayed combat rating does not fully account for the strength of his high-level Word Spirits 4.
• Attack scaling: Both Transcendence and Attack contribute to Word Spirit strength. Tier advancement and improved equipment can therefore strengthen his existing repertoire without changing the abilities' Sequences 85 145 691.
• Variable preparation: Some abilities require elaborate or continuous chanting, while Intangibility activates instantly. Zhurong's chant can be completed in advance of its release 138 290 579.

Unlocking Word Spirits

Confirmed rare synthesis results:

Synthesis consumes three scrolls for one result, making repeated attempts expensive. Chen Nian reinvests equipment-sale proceeds into low-level scrolls to pursue rare Word Spirits 39.

The World Tree's exchange interface also lists compatible abilities that are not thereby confirmed as acquired, including Sequence 29, Water Dragon Swim, for two Performance Points and Sequence 58, Dust Storm, for three. Chen Nian explicitly purchases Intangibility from this interface 578 579.

Costs and Risks

• Power consumption: Every use consumes extraordinary power. During early hunting, frequent level increases replenish enough power to sustain Chen Nian's repeated group kills 5.
• High-risk expenditure: Golden Sword of Judgment consumes enough energy that Chen Nian initially limits it to a few uses rather than routine hunting 4.
• Overuse: Excessive supernatural-power expenditure can overtax the user's genes and cause irreversible collapse 16.
• Ability-specific hazards: Death God suppresses Chen Nian's emotions, while Mandate of Heaven can produce an indiscriminate Black Sun 10 50.
• Recognition: Familiar players can identify Buyu through his signature Word Spirits. A witness recognizes him specifically after seeing Death God 4 10.
• Consumption reduction: By Chapter 134, Chen Nian has collected four Arcane enchantment gems, reducing supernatural-power consumption by 40%. Despite this reduction, his first use of Zhurong against the Deep Sea Demon God empties his entire reserve 134 139.
• Chanting vulnerability: Elaborate high-risk invocations can require protection while preparing. Shangze guards Chen Nian against blood bats during a Zhurong invocation, while Wrath of the Gods supplies its own protective barrier during its continuous chant 203 290.
• Divine-power requirements: Wrath of the Gods requires an awakened Divinity and consumes substantial divine power, making it unsuitable for casual use 290.
• Reuse restrictions: Intangibility cannot be activated consecutively, and advanced Mandate of Heaven becomes unavailable for a period after an effect is selected 579 606.
• Power-dependent limits: Even a suitable Word Spirit can fail if Chen Nian lacks the reserves to sustain it. Judgment has a chance of breaking the Cursed Cave's fog gate, but he must stop because the clash drains his power 121.

Abilities & Skills

Golden Sword of Judgment

Sequence 121 — High-risk, domain-type Word Spirit. Establishes a domain centered on its user, with a golden sword described as holding power over life and death within it 1 2.

• Can cleave physical objects, bullets, air, supernatural abilities, and souls 3.
• Produces rapid invisible slashes; Chen Nian cuts apart the level-50 Black Lin Tiger in a single activation 3.
• Nullifies the Flame Calamity Treant's heat and flames before destroying it 6.
• Cuts through the world boss's normally entrance-restricted barrier, then destroys the Mountain-Carrying Demon Turtle with one strike 29.
• Dismembers three Calamity Beasts and cuts down approaching Undead Warriors before they can touch Chen Nian 38.
• Its heavy energy consumption makes it unsuitable for unrestricted use against ordinary monsters 4.
• Channeled expansion: Its domain expands while maintained. A rushed invocation against the Twin Demon God initially covers only two meters around Chen Nian, allowing the enemy to remain outside its reach 78.
• Exclusive use: Cannot be used alongside other Word Spirits; Chen Nian relinquishes the domain when changing to his other attacks 78 116.
• Defensive applications: Destroys the Twin Demon God's lasers, turns Abe no Seimei's flying flowers and falling leaves into dust, and protects Chen Nian's airship while passing through a tornado 89 364 462.
• Barrier limitations: It can sever temperature and challenge the Cursed Cave's fog gate, but Chen Nian initially lacks sufficient power to complete that breakthrough 121.
• Later recaps and invocations also shorten its name to Judgment 121 225 364.

Death God

Sequence 127 — Ultra-high-risk Word Spirit. Deploys a vision-stripping domain and grants Death God Possession for 30 seconds 6 8.

• After killing the group led by Brother Dao, Chen Nian states that his next activation will provide 300% + 500 attack power 10.
• Its permanent kill-based growth can eventually make it stronger than Golden Sword of Judgment 8.
• The domain can intimidate without killing: Chen Nian uses it to silence hundreds of guild members and reinforce Su Jinyu's authority 26.
• During his period of incomplete recovery in the holy lands, Chen Nian invokes it once he has accumulated enough power for a high-risk Word Spirit 637.

Mandate of Heaven

Sequence 101 — High-risk, card-drawing Word Spirit. Its original effect depends on the card drawn 50.

• Black Sun is dangerous enough that even Chen Nian may be unable to control it properly 50.
• Chen Nian uses Mandate of Heaven to restore his strength after Cain pierces his chest during their battle 563.

Advanced form: Allows Chen Nian to directly select a Mandate of Heaven effect without prerequisites instead of relying on the original draw. After activation, the Word Spirit cannot be used again for a certain period 606.

• During the Rangers' Pursuit Ritual, Chen Nian combines Stars with Sovereign to surge into the lead 702.

Void-Escaping Spirit Snake

Sequence 53 — Rare Word Spirit. Summons an invisible, agile spirit snake with substantial attack power and exceptionally high concealment 11 12.

• Directed attacks: Strikes wherever Chen Nian directs it, allowing him to damage the Fire Rock Giant without revealing his intervention 12.
• Transportation: Can be ridden through confined spaces, as demonstrated during Xiaoke's sewer rescue 17.
• Aerial protection: Coils around Chen Nian and cushions his descent after he jumps from an aircraft 29.
• Protection of others: Shields Qin Yu during Jiang Lie's attack 22.
• Body manipulation: Moves Xiao Cheng's body while Chen Nian secretly launches attacks through the resulting gestures 34.
• Restraint: Binds the Twin Demon God while Chen Nian attacks with Lion Flame 78.
• Obstruction: Plugs an aircraft opening to prevent enemies from reaching the cabin 116.
• Evolution: Becomes the first summon within Sequence 130, Ten Beasts of All Creation Summoning Technique, rather than disappearing from Chen Nian's repertoire 195.
• Continued use: Carries Chen Nian toward a demon lair's concentrated energy and is later summoned with four other beasts against Cain 203 563.

Ten Beasts of All Creation Summoning Technique

Sequence 130 — High-risk summoning Word Spirit. Evolves from Void-Escaping Spirit Snake through the Qilin's blood blessing. The original spirit snake becomes the first of ten beasts, with nine stronger summons available through further progression 195.

• King of All Creation: An enormous phantom that devours sacrificed powerful souls. Gaining its recognition unlocks additional summoned beasts 195.
• Personal-kill requirement: It can absorb the souls only of beasts Chen Nian has killed himself. He therefore stops Ai Lan and Zhao Yixue from helping kill the surrounding Desolate Beasts 195.
• Initial progression: Begins at 0/1,000 soul energy toward unlocking the second beast, Moon-Howling Heavenly Wolf. The golden lion king's soul supplies 10 points 195.
• Alternate advancement: World Tree Performance Points can unlock further beasts. Chen Nian spends 20 points to acquire the seventh beast, Heavenly Thunder Divine Bird 691.

Before purchasing the seventh beast, Chen Nian is explicitly stated to have unlocked the first six 691.

Wind and Lightning Flash

Sequence 30 — Rare movement Word Spirit. Provides extremely high-speed movement at low expenditure 39.

• Compensates for Chen Nian's lack of mobility and serves as an efficient escape ability 39.
• Allows him to reach Qiu Ya and remove an explosive talisman before it detonates 42.
• Later ability recaps specify rapid movement along the ground, distinguishing it from flight and spatial movement 121 225.

Sensory and Concealment Word Spirits

• Without activating Heavenly Eye, Chen Nian cannot distinguish Gu Qingyue's Yao Ji transformation from the real Su Jinyu 290.

Elemental Word Spirits

• Repeated Flame Explosions deliberately mutate the Calamity Treant into the stronger Flame Calamity Treant 6.
• Wind-Gathering Cannon allows Chen Nian to present himself as a wind mage rather than reveal his unique talent 39.

Tier-Specific Ultimate Word Spirits

These abilities are comparatively easy to activate, powerful enough for routine combat, and more convenient than high-risk rare Word Spirits. Chen Nian nevertheless uses them relatively infrequently because his exceptional higher-end abilities overshadow them 140 225 447.

Primordial World and Origin-Destroying World

Sequence 125 — High-risk restoration and destruction Word Spirit. Primordial World is awarded during Chen Nian's Tier Two advancement. Its reversal, Origin-Destroying World, is unlocked with the Evolution Secret Key 85 121 225.

• Both forms affect inanimate objects only, rather than functioning as bodily healing or unrestricted destruction of living targets 225.
• Against the Cursed Cave's gate, Origin-Destroying World is more effective than Judgment because of its specialization in inanimate targets 122.

Zhurong

Sequence 119 — High-risk fire Word Spirit. The Divinity evolution of Sequence 19, Flame Explosion, derived from the Dragon Country fire god Zhurong. The transformation occurs after Chen Nian equips the Demon God of Trickery's Jeweled Pendant and receives its Divine Gene effect 138.

• Invocation: Requires an elaborate chant and immense accumulated power. Chen Nian completes the chant while returning to the battlefield before its first release 138 317.
• Manifestation: An enormous flame giant envelops Chen Nian, with a body forged from fire and eyes blazing like suns 139.
• Area destruction: Releases an all-destroying fiery explosion centered on the user; its heat boils the sea and rapidly evaporates seawater 139 225.
• Regeneration counter: Evaporates the Deep Sea Demon God's seawater body faster than it can regenerate, destroying it outright 139.
• Extreme cost: Its first use drains every remaining drop of Chen Nian's transcendent power despite his Arcane consumption reduction 139.
• Protected casting: Shangze guards Chen Nian while he invokes it in a demon lair; Vermilion Bird Divine Fire later protects him during the chant against Ibaraki-doji 203 317.
• Domain destruction: Engulfs Ibaraki-doji and shatters his life-draining Power over Life and Death Domain 317.
• Later use: Destroys the Carrion Giant Monster using gathered fire energy in the Ghostly Shadow Forest 447.

Heavenly Brilliance

Sequence 88 — Rare Word Spirit. Awakened through absorption of Vermilion Bird blood essence 268.

• Fires a blazing beam of immense power down from the sky 268.
• Its power increases as the time approaches noon 268.
• Burns Inugami's fur and defeats him in the Dream Pavilion arena, leaving him scorched and returned to his original dog form 323.
• Amplified by the rising sun, burns away Cain's body and soul, killing the sixty-first-ranked Origin Demon God 565.

Wrath of the Gods

Sequence 131 — Wide-area divine punishment Word Spirit. Obtained through contribution-point rewards; at acquisition, its Sequence surpasses Ten Beasts of All Creation and becomes Chen Nian's highest 290.

• Fills Chen Nian's need for an attack capable of striking large enemy formations across a vast area 290.
• During the Dragon Calamity's approach to Linhai City, Chen Nian activates God Descent Technique as its foundation and chants within a sacred golden barrier before releasing it against the dragons 296.
• Its post-merger acquisition is distinct from the original game's requirement to collect seven bolts of world-destroying heavenly lightning 6 290.

Sovereign

Sequence 100 — Rare field-type Word Spirit. Awakened through a legendary-grade skill scroll 339.

• Expands a field centered on Chen Nian and forcibly increases living beings' bodily mass a hundredfold, compelling them to kneel or prostrate themselves 339.
• Its practical threat is limited against powerful opponents, but the sudden weight increase can catch first-time targets off guard. Two academy guardians fall before forcing themselves upright against its pressure 577.
• Chen Nian applies it to rival racers' airships, increasing their mass and sending them plummeting near the finish line 462.
• Used with Mandate of Heaven—Stars at the start of the Rangers' Pursuit Ritual. Taxue resists its effect 702.

Tiankong Divine Cannon

Sequence 126 — Destructive ranged Word Spirit. Chen Nian unleashes it while Tang Rou protects the group with a barrier 455.

• Blasts apart an undead horde and the colossal python that has shattered the party's Undead Bone Dragon 455.
• Destroys the concealed black energy sphere responsible for the Frost Domain's contamination, causing the contamination to fade 492.

Movement, Restraint, and Defensive Word Spirits

• Instant accelerates Chen Nian's saber draw against the Heavenly Demon Ape King, though the resulting strike still fails to sever its heavily defended arm 130.

Poetry and the Nine-Character Mantra

Chen Nian's use of Word Spirit power later extends beyond the original numbered repertoire into spoken poetry and the Nine-Character Mantra 370 641.

• Poetic combat: After comprehending Li Bai's poetry, Chen Nian borrows his wine and defeats the Beast God using “Bring in the Wine.” Poetry subsequently becomes one of his means of fighting 370.
• Heaven-and-earth power: While studying the Nine-Character Mantra scroll, Chen Nian recognizes that his Word Spirit and poetry can invoke the power of heaven and earth 641.
• Initial characters: “Approach” drives back Jun Moxie's black dragon, while “Warrior” shatters it 641.
• Later progression: By his middle-to-late Tier Seven enhancement, Chen Nian can use the mantra's sixth character 691.
