Background / History
Early life
Qing Lin was abandoned by her mother after birth and endured years of prejudice because of her mixed heritage. Xiao Ding and Xiao Li took her in at the Desert Iron Mercenary Group and were the only people there who did not bully her. Nevertheless, she was left doing the dirtiest, most exhausting work and frequently went hungry. Prolonged mistreatment made her withdrawn and convinced her that she had no right to refuse others’ demands 7 11.
Leaving Stone Desert City
Luo Yang sought Qing Lin out and offered Xiao Ding ten thousand gold coins as compensation for her food and lodging. Believing the commander intended to sell her, she initially submitted to his decision rather than expressing a preference 7.
Tushan Rongrong intervened after the mercenaries reacted with disgust to Qing Lin’s snake scales. She punished them, comforted Qing Lin, and let her touch her fox ears to show that she was not human either. Only after Rongrong explicitly assured her that she could refuse did Qing Lin willingly agree to become Luo Yang’s maid 8.
Rongrong then fed her, helped her bathe, altered clothes for her, and delayed the group’s departure for seven days to nurse her malnourished body. Luo Yang and Rongrong also protected her from further harassment in the city 9 11 14.
Tagor Desert expedition
Qing Lin guided the party to Queen Medusa’s former underground route by sensing traces left more than five months earlier. Beneath the desert, Luo Yang subdued the Two-Headed Fire Spirit Snake so that she could awaken her pupils and contract it. She named its heads Da Ling and Er Ling, then ordered it to guide him through the magma to the lotus platform 14 16.
She subsequently accompanied the party to the Snake-People Holy City. During the preparations for Luo Yang’s wedding, she toured the city with him and Yue Ti Xia, continued attending to his daily needs, and stood guard while he cultivated 29 35 37.
Salt City and attempted abduction
After leaving Snake-People territory, Qing Lin traveled toward the Jia Ma Empire with Luo Yang and Hai Bodong. To draw out the Mo Clan, Luo Yang had information about her pupils circulated and disguised himself as her. The real Qing Lin remained concealed with Hai Bodong while Mo Cheng prepared to transplant the supposed pupils into himself 47 48 49.
Following Luo Yang’s counterattack against the Mo Clan, Lu Man attempted to take Qing Lin for her sect. Hai Bodong blocked her and refused to abandon Qing Lin even after Lu Man summoned the Eight-Winged Black Serpent Emperor. When Lu Man approached during the battle, Qing Lin summoned her Two-Headed Fire Spirit Snake to resist 49 50.
Appearance
- Build and complexion: Petite, fair-skinned, and initially thin from prolonged malnutrition, with a delicate oval face 7 8 9.
- Eyes: Jade-green; three green dots emerge around each pupil during activation, developing into flower-like manifestations 14 16 50.
- Snake scales: Green scales grow around her wrists. Initially a source of shame, they later resemble jeweled bracelets when paired with Rongrong’s altered outfit 8 11.
- Clothing and hairstyle: Her early replacement outfit is a pale-green flowing-cloud gauze robe, worn with a high ponytail and small braids framing her cheeks 11.
- Recovery: Her initially frail appearance improves over roughly two months of care; her later profile records increased height and weight 46 48.
Personality
Qing Lin begins as intensely timid, insecure, and accustomed to appeasing others. She avoids eye contact, speaks almost inaudibly, and apologizes when her scales become visible, fearing that they will frighten Rongrong. Despite her treatment, she retains an innocent and kind disposition 7 8 11.
Safety allows her to become more expressive and affectionate. She enjoys Luo Yang’s praise and head pats, laughs freely with Rongrong, and gradually develops romantic feelings for her young master. Her attachment also produces jealousy: she resents the Heaven Swallowing Python’s closeness to him and pointedly displays her own familiarity with him in front of Yue Ti Xia 14 33 35 48.
She takes her maid duties seriously and worries readily about Luo Yang’s safety. While he is beneath the magma, she asks Rongrong about him twenty-two times; during his extended stay in the bridal chamber, she continues attempting to deliver all three daily meals 17 45 46.
Abilities & Skills
Triple Jade-Green Snake Flower Pupils
Her innate ocular ability links her to snake-type creatures and enables sensing, contracting, and controlling them 14 16.
- Trace detection: Identifies faint traces left by Queen Medusa and distinguishes which underground passage contains the strongest remnants 14.
- Detection through magma: Notices the approaching Two-Headed Fire Spirit Snake before it emerges from the magma lake 15.
- Compulsory contracts: Brands green flowers onto both heads of the subdued snake. The contract removes its hostility toward her and compels obedience even when it is reluctant 16.
- Mental communication: Receives information from the snake and issues telepathic orders 16.
- Contract space: Stores the snake within her pupils’ space and summons it when threatened 17 50.
- Documented limit: At her current development, she can control at most fifth-order magical beasts, leaving the sixth-order Eight-Winged Black Serpent Emperor beyond her reach 50.
- Potential: Her eyes are described as capable of eventually bringing her to Dou Sheng; this is a future possibility, not an attained realm 16.
