Background / History
Bibi Dong’s Favored Candidate
Hu Liena is an outstanding student of Spirit Hall Elite Academy and Bibi Dong’s personal disciple. Before witnessing Ye Han’s Twin Martial Souls, Bibi Dong puts Hu Liena forward as her preferred candidate for Spirit Hall’s leadership succession, praising both her character and cultivation talent. Yue Guan and Gui Mei also regard her highly. Bibi Dong later states that she had intended to appoint Hu Liena as Holy Maiden; no appointment is shown in the provided chapters 5 18.
Meeting Ye Han
Hu Liena first encounters Ye Han during a street attack by a deranged former Spirit Hall Soul Master. Although she and her companions are heading toward the disturbance, she changes course after noticing him alone. She carries him to a secluded alley, tells him to wait safely, and leaves to help stop the attacker. Ling Yuan retrieves him before Hu Liena returns 8 9.
When she next sees Ye Han at Ling Yuan’s courtyard, Hu Liena initially distrusts him during Bibi Dong’s confrontation with Ling Yuan. Her attitude changes after he reveals his Twin Martial Souls and rank twenty-six Soul Power, then presents himself as taking responsibility for protecting Ling Yuan. Impressed by his talent and apparent sense of responsibility, she introduces herself as his senior sister and offers to look after him 10 11.
Sunset Forest
Hu Liena accompanies Bibi Dong, Ling Yuan, and Ye Han to Sunset Forest to obtain her third Soul Ring. Bibi Dong severely wounds a suitable demon fox, allowing Hu Liena to deliver the finishing blow and absorb its ring. During the journey, she also recognizes Ye Han as the child she rescued and becomes more protective of him 12.
After gaining Heavenly Fox Enchanting Sound, Hu Liena proposes charming Ye Han so that he will cooperate with Bibi Dong. She sees this as a way to help her teacher while becoming closer to him. Nevertheless, when Ye Han’s three purple Soul Rings contradict Spirit Hall’s established absorption theory, she openly supports his argument that the theory should change 18 19.
That night, she secretly approaches Ye Han and uses her new charm skill on him. The attempt fails: his mental strength is far greater than hers, and he merely pretends to be controlled. Bibi Dong calls Hu Liena away before she discovers the deception 19 20.
Return to Spirit City
After returning to Spirit City, Hu Liena witnesses Yan and Xie Yue attack Ye Han over his closeness to her. She declares that she is willing to be Ye Han’s partner and tries to stop the confrontation. Following their defeat, she ends her friendship with Yan and warns her brother against troubling Ye Han again. Ye Han subsequently evades her attempt to clarify his public declaration that she is his woman 20 21.
Hu Liena thereafter visits Ye Han regularly to spend time and cultivate with him. When he returns with Xiao Wu and Dugu Yan, she clashes with Xiao Wu over his attention and the latter’s refusal to address her as Senior Sister. She helps arrange Dugu Yan’s accommodation, hoping that befriending Poison Douluo’s granddaughter might also benefit Bibi Dong. By their next visit, Hu Liena and Dugu Yan have become close 24 35 36.
