Background / History
Departure from the Star Dou Great Forest
Xiao Wu entered the human world to grow stronger and eventually avenge her mother, who had been killed by Spirit Hall’s Bibi Dong. She left despite Da Ming and Er Ming advising her to remain in the Star Dou Great Forest. After her capture, she regretted ignoring their warnings 26.
During the academy holidays, she accompanied Tang San to Holy Soul Village. On the mountain behind the village, she accepted his offer to become his younger sister after he promised to protect her with his life—even against enemies he could not defeat 24 25.
Capture and the Dragon God’s Third Trial
The Dragon God assigned Ye Han a trial to subdue a transformed hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast as his personal pet beast. Recognizing Xiao Wu as the intended target, Ye Han arranged to intercept her during the holidays. His motives also included provoking Tang San and taking revenge against Tang Hao through his son 18 23 24.
Prompted by Ye Han, Ling Yuan identified Xiao Wu’s true species and captured her. Tang San attempted to intervene but fled after being severely injured, leaving Xiao Wu behind. His departure shattered her trust in his promise of protection. Ling Yuan initially intended to preserve her as a future Soul Ring for Ye Han 25 26.
Tang Hao intercepted the captors, and Xiao Wu witnessed Ye Han defeat him using the Dragon God’s power. She interpreted the divine presence as evidence that Ye Han was a god of Soul Beasts in human form. After escaping her restraints at an inn, she convinced herself that he had rescued her from a plot by Tang San and Tang Hao and was working undercover to destroy Spirit Hall. These were her assumptions, not confirmed plans 27 28.
Ye Han exploited this belief to secure her agreement to become his personal pet beast. He placed the Dragon God’s Soul Seal in her Sea of Consciousness, producing a dragon-beast totem on her forehead and completing his Third Trial 28.
Concealed Life in Spirit City
At the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Ye Han gave Xiao Wu the Lovesick Heartbreak Red. The flower recognized her as its master and concealed her Soul Beast presence. Ling Yuan subsequently introduced her as a newly accepted disciple, providing a public explanation for her place beside Ye Han 31 32 33.
Xiao Wu moved into Ling Yuan’s courtyard, where she could be kept under observation. After Ling Yuan whipped her for secretly watching a private bath, Ye Han intervened, treated her injuries, and comforted her. She promised to obey both of them, while Ye Han privately regarded her growing dependence as useful for his future plans involving Da Ming and Er Ming 35 36.
She later accompanied the group to Heaven Dou City to meet Qian Renxue. Intimidated by Qian Daoliu’s strength, she became more cautious about protecting what she believed was Ye Han’s undercover identity. She also rationalized his relationship with Qian Renxue as part of that supposed mission 37 39.
Hope of Resurrecting Her Mother
During the following two years, encounters with Bibi Dong repeatedly renewed Xiao Wu’s grief and anger. Ye Han kept her settled by promising revenge. He later told her that her mother’s soul might still exist within Bibi Dong and promised to find a way to resurrect her 49.
Ye Han also warned that killing Bibi Dong could destroy her mother’s soul. Xiao Wu accepted his explanation with intense gratitude, but neither her mother’s survival nor a means of resurrection had been confirmed 47 49.
Appearance
Xiao Wu appears as a young girl with long black hair, rabbit ears, and a preference for pink clothing 24 37 49.
- Hair: Silky black hair worn in a long scorpion braid 24.
- Rabbit ears: Pink ears that visibly droop when she is frightened or disappointed 37 50.
- Clothing: Initially wears a pink miniskirt and pink stockings; later appears in a pink silk nightdress 24 49.
- Soul-seal mark: A dragon-beast totem appears on her forehead when Ye Han brands her 28.
Personality
Xiao Wu initially behaves defiantly toward unfamiliar people, insulting Ye Han and Ling Yuan before recognizing the danger they pose. Once confronted by overwhelming strength, she becomes frightened and seeks protection. Tang San’s abandonment leaves her especially receptive to the idea that Ye Han is a divine rescuer 25 26 28.
Her devotion to Ye Han combines gratitude, attraction to his Soul Beast aura, and the fear imposed by his seal. She repeatedly interprets his actions in ways that preserve her belief in him. She also becomes possessive, confronting Hu Liena and Dugu Yan over their closeness to him and preventing them from entering his room 28 35 39 41.
Her mother remains a central emotional attachment. She repeatedly asks about revenge, struggles to sleep when missing her, and finds comfort in having Ye Han comb her hair 49.
