Background / History
Childhood and Spirit Hall Academy
Yan was an orphan who experienced homelessness and bullying before Spirit Hall took him in and raised him. He consequently regarded the organization as his home, rather than merely an institution he served 226.
At Spirit Hall Academy, he belonged to the same year as Hu Liena and was close to her brother, Xie Yue. His unreturned feelings for Hu Liena made him hostile toward Jun Yi, whom he glared at despite having no prior grievance against him 64.
Bibi Dong assigned Yan to test Jun Yi's potential in an equal-level spar after he repeatedly requested the task. Although Yan was level 47, he agreed to suppress his Soul Power to Jun Yi's level 33. Jun Yi redirected his rocks and flames, forcing him to use his fourth Soul Skill and violate the agreed limit. Hu Liena declared Yan the loser and stopped his attempted rematch 71 72 73.
Mist Grand Canyon
While training in the Mist Grand Canyon, Yan and Xie Yue fought two Evil Soul Masters whose Martial Soul Fusion Skill raised their combined strength to the Soul Emperor level. Unable to overcome them, Yan placed himself between the enemy and Xie Yue, intending to self-detonate so his friend could escape 223 224.
Jun Yi and Zhu Zhuqing intervened before the sacrifice became fatal. Zhu Zhuqing killed the enemy, while Jun Yi treated Yan's catastrophic burns with a Cockscomb Phoenix Sunflower. The herb restored his body and improved his talent; Jun Yi separately reshaped his facial features 225.
While restoring Yan's consciousness, Jun Yi appeared to him as a spider-headed “god of death” and questioned his convictions. Believing himself dead, Yan admitted his unconditional loyalty to Spirit Hall, acknowledged that Hu Liena would not love him, and resolved to stop pestering her. Jun Yi accepted his answers and completed his recovery 226.
Yan awoke at rank 50 with an evolved Martial Soul. He credited Jun Yi for saving him, then reunited with Xie Yue, who initially failed to recognize his new face. The experience redirected Yan's attention toward cultivation and practical combat rather than romantic pursuit 227 228 229.
On returning to Spirit City, Yan concealed Jun Yi and Zhu Zhuqing's identities in his report to Bibi Dong. He and Xie Yue obtained permission to return to the canyon for another year of training before preparing for the tournament 230.
Academy Tournament
By the later team-selection dispute, Yan had reached level 56. He defended Zhu Zhuqing's place on the team but also insisted that he and Xie Yue should apologize for laughing at their teammates, demonstrating his more considerate temperament 231.
Against Shrek Academy, Yan blocked repeating-crossbow bolts, destroyed Tang San's Blue Silver Grass cages, and overwhelmed Ma Hongjun with fire. He subsequently defeated Tang San with his fifth Soul Skill, then asked Zhu Zhuqing to freeze the fire dragon before it killed the unconscious opponent 350 353 354.
Yan later challenged Dugu Yan after she defeated Hu Liena and Xie Yue's Demon Charm fusion. Despite revealing his Blazing Flame Domain, he was slowed by her poison and lost their final clash of dragon attacks. He accepted the result and thanked her for exposing his shortcomings 360 361.
Slaughter City and Spirit Hall Missions
Yan sought permission to temper himself in Slaughter City alongside Hu Liena. Bibi Dong escorted them with Jun Yi and negotiated arrangements preventing the four newcomers—including Dugu Yan and Zhu Zhuqing—from being forced to fight one another 346 374.
After the King of Slaughter's death, Yan agreed to help Jun Yi maintain order in the city. Jun Yi granted him the ability to use Soul Skills there, bypassing its usual restriction 401.
Yan later interrupted Tang San and Ning Rongrong's wedding, identifying himself as a member of Spirit Hall's Golden Generation and presenting bloody evidence of Ning Fengzhi's agents within Spirit Hall. He also fought Tang San during the confrontation 415.
On a subsequent recruitment mission, Yan demanded that the Strength Clan join Spirit Hall and fought Tai Tan after his refusal. He overcame Tai Tan's eighth Soul Skill, then engulfed him in flames while combining two domains. At the Defense Clan estate, Yan acted as an elder-in-waiting and presented Spirit Hall's offer of protection to the assembled clan leaders 427 428 429.
Back in Slaughter City, Jun Yi assigned Yan to watch Tang San and keep him alive until he achieved one hundred consecutive arena victories, because Jun Yi still had a use for him 440.
Fire God and Later Life
As a rank 95 Titled Douluo with divine inheritance powers, Yan encountered a weakened Tang San. He initially tried to explain Spirit Hall's work against Evil Soul Masters, but attacked after Tang San repeatedly insulted the organization. Yan then healed his burns and warned him against further slander 522.
Yan subsequently reported completing the Seven Trials of the Fire God. By the time Ning Fengzhi discussed Spirit Hall's divine forces, he had inherited the Fire God position 526 547.
At Jialing Pass, Yan joined Sea God Zhu Zhuqing and Water God Dugu Yan in attacking the assembled gods. Later, he evacuated Yue Guan and Gui Mei on Jun Yi's orders and activated the Soul Tools supporting Lou Gao's Level 10 Spear of Eternity against the Creation God 598 605.
In later years, Yan trained his seven-year-old daughter, Gu Ruomeng, in Spirit City. When Xie Yue returned from his mission, the two embraced, and Yan introduced him to Ruomeng as her uncle, Gu Xie Yue 631.
Appearance
- Hair: Red, later described as long and crimson 64 521.
- Original face: Unremarkable before Jun Yi altered his features during treatment 225.
- Reconstructed face: Sharply defined features, sword-like brows, bright eyes, a straight nose, and thin lips, giving him a handsome, aloof appearance 228.
- Forehead marking: A black-and-red flame pattern between his brows 228.
- Birthmark: A tiny black-flame-shaped mark below his left ear. Hu Liena uses it to recognize him despite his changed face 230.
- Restored skin: The Cockscomb Phoenix Sunflower leaves his skin fair and removes both his burns and old training scars 225 226.
- Later clothing: Crimson robes when he encounters the weakened Tang San 521.
Personality
Yan initially has an explosive temper, a condescending attitude toward weaker opponents, and difficulty accepting humiliation. His jealousy over Hu Liena contributes to his early hostility toward Jun Yi, while his defeat in their spar leaves him demanding another fight 64 71 73.
His loyalty to Spirit Hall is rooted in personal gratitude. He takes its duty to eliminate Evil Soul Masters seriously, but does not treat justice as a higher authority than his adopted home: when questioned, he admits he would obey even an order to kill defenseless people. He explicitly describes himself as no saint 224 226.
His willingness to sacrifice himself for Xie Yue reveals genuine devotion beneath his arrogance. The near-death experience makes him recognize the consequences of neglecting cultivation and relying too heavily on his Martial Soul's advantages. He becomes more disciplined, rational, and willing to apologize, while respecting Hu Liena's request not to call her “Nana” 226 229 230 231.
As a father, Yan is attentive and encouraging. During practice, he deliberately gives Ruomeng openings, praises her progress, and stops her from overusing a newly mastered technique 631.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Lord and Its Evolutions
- Dual attributes: The Flame Lord combines fire and earth and is described as one of antiquity's top Martial Souls, with balanced offensive and defensive power 71.
- Winged evolution: After treatment, it appears as a goat-headed, humanoid flaming demon with symbol-covered fiery wings 227.
- Ten-headed form: By rank 75, it manifests as a ten-headed hell demon surrounded by flaming skulls, with enormous fiery-red wings 427.
- Fire God Phantom: Evolves into this form through the Fire God's trials. Its sacred phantom can merge with Yan and is accompanied by seven flame-formed God Rings 522 526.
Soul Skills
| Skill | Position | Applications |
|---|---|---|
| Hell Magma Surge | First Soul Skill | Covers his striking arm in black flames; its impact blasts a deep crater into the training ground 72. |
| Granite Rock | Second Soul Skill | Transforms ground stones into hard black granite and launches them at opponents. Yan claims precise targeting against grounded enemies within the arena 72. |
| Hell Blaze | Third Soul Skill | Creates a fiery phantom that releases a sweeping flood of flames; Yan can also detonate the phantom into scattered tongues of fire 72. |
| Magma Surge | Fourth Soul Skill | Makes the ground viscous and raises rocks into airborne magma masses. The fourth skill also creates a magma covering capable of blocking redirected flames 72 224. |
| Hell Sun-Eclipsing Dragon | Fifth Soul Skill | Condenses flames into an enormous attacking dragon. It defeats Tang San but is overcome by Dugu Yan's Blue Silver Poison Dragon 354 361. |
| Huo Wu Soaring | Later named attack | Used during his divine-powered assault on the weakened Tang San, leaving him severely burned 522. |
Blazing Flame Domain
- Produces a circular area of intense fire-element pressure and scorching heat 360.
- Originates from the embryonic domain Yan senses during his Martial Soul evolution and matures through sustained cultivation 360.
- Destroys a poisonous construct released by Dugu Yan, but does not grant complete poison immunity: her later poison slows his movements 360 361.
- Requires substantial Soul Power to maintain; prolonged combat against Dugu Yan leaves him unable to sustain the fight 361.
Divine Slaughter's Domain
- Manifests dense killing intent 428.
- Can overlap with the Blazing Flame Domain, bringing Yan to his peak condition during his fight with Tai Tan 428.
Flight, Defense, and Combat Technique
- Flight: Uses flaming wings for aerial movement and fireball bombardment 354.
- Physical defense: Withstands exchanges with Tang San's Clear Sky Hammer without using Soul Skills 353.
- Crimson protective light: Blocks Dugu Yan's spear thrust and produces suction that pulls her toward him 360.
- Projectile interception: Uses flames to deflect or destroy Tang San's hidden weapons and a shield to stop repeating-crossbow bolts 350 354.
- Combat awareness: Notices nearly invisible poison powder released by Tang San 353.
Divine Power
- Healing: Restores Tang San's charred body with red light after burning him 522.
- Divine attacks: As Fire God, joins the assault that destroys the Second-Class and Third-Class Deities below Jialing Pass 598.
- Slaughter City exception: Jun Yi's intervention allows him to summon Soul Rings and use Soul Skills despite the city's restrictions 401.
