Personality

Gui Mei is deeply deferential to Bibi Dong and conscious of his responsibilities. When reporting to her, he avoids raising his head for fear of displeasing her. During the prolonged Thorn Ridge expedition, he worries that remaining away too long could leave the Pope without someone available to carry out her orders 6 12.

He is ruthless toward threats to Spirit Hall’s Holy Son. He silently kills an assassin sent by Xue Beng and destroys the evidence, and later attempts to finish Dugu Bo after defeating him until Yu Tianling intervenes 12 17.

His attachment to Yu Tianling develops into personal devotion. After receiving the Ghost Shadow Jade Flower, he kneels and pledges to protect both Yu Tianling and Spirit Hall unto death. His confidence in the Holy Son is strong enough that he waits calmly beside the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Spring, trusting Yu Tianling’s judgment despite Dugu Bo’s warnings 18 19.

Ghost Fire Martial Soul

His Martial Soul combines darkness and fire, both strengthened by the Ghost Shadow Jade Flower 20.

• Ten Thousand Poison Pill — A pill developed by Spirit Pill Douluo. Gui Mei takes one before crossing the poisonous barrier surrounding the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Spring 17.
• Immortal Herb delivery — Entrusted with transporting Yu Tianling’s harvested herbs, their usage instructions, and the Ten Thousand Poison Pill back to Spirit City 20.

Background / History

Recruiting Yu Tianling

Bibi Dong sends Gui Mei to retrieve Yu Tianling after hearing of his innate full Soul Power, exceptional Beast Martial Soul, and willingness to join Spirit Hall. Gui Mei arrives in Swift Village as the Pope’s representative and agrees to bring Lin Qingze along 3 5 6.

Upon reaching Spirit City, he reports that Yu Tianling’s Martial Soul surpasses the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon and that his first Soul Ring is 780 years old. He also raises the question of Lin Qingze’s placement, then carries out Bibi Dong’s order to appoint him as a Spirit Hall Academy teacher 6.

Star Dou Great Forest and Thorn Ridge

Gui Mei accompanies the young Soul Masters on their ring-hunting expedition. When Xue Beng sends a Soul Saint to kill them, he intercepts the assassin and erases the body with ghostfire. He had previously restrained himself because he recognized Qian Renxue beneath her Xue Qinghe disguise and knew of her infiltration mission 10 12.

After locating Thorn Ridge, Gui Mei clears an entrance and incapacitates a suitable Thorn Dragon for Yu Tianling’s second Soul Ring. He later returns ahead of the others to report the expedition’s events to Bibi Dong 12 13.

Sunset Forest Ruins

At Yu Tianling’s request, Gui Mei accompanies him to the ruins described in his father’s letter. Inside the cave, spatial fluctuations repeatedly teleport Gui Mei outside, preventing him from following Yu Tianling into the inheritance site 14 16.

He waits anxiously at the entrance until Yu Tianling returns. After learning about the Godhood Inheritance and the Third Trial, he helps search Sunset Forest for the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Spring, locating its poisonous valley after six hours 16.

Ice and Fire Yin Yang Spring

Gui Mei crosses the poisonous barrier with Yu Tianling and defeats the valley’s guardian, Dugu Bo. Yu Tianling stops him from killing the Poison Douluo, instead negotiating access to the herbs and Dugu Bo’s recruitment into Spirit Hall 17.

After cultivating with the Ghost Shadow Jade Flower, Gui Mei learns that Yu Tianling has fallen into the spring. Initially suspicious of Dugu Bo, he accepts his explanation and notices that the two herbs growing within the spring have disappeared. Convinced Yu Tianling is cultivating deliberately, he waits until the Holy Son resurfaces unharmed 18 19.

Yu Tianling then sends him back to Spirit City with the harvested herbs. Though reluctant to leave him alone, Gui Mei complies after advising him to seek help from Heaven Dou City’s Spirit Hall branch if necessary 20.

Return to Heaven Dou and Spirit City

Gui Mei rejoins Yu Tianling in Heaven Dou City, where he deals with a predatory Soul Elder threatening Yu Tianling and Zhu Zhuqing. During the subsequent ring hunt, he weakens the Shadow-Seizing Bamboo for Xie Yue and the Ghost Tiger chosen for Hu Liena 25 26 28.

After the hunt, he proposes resting in Heaven Dou City before returning home. Once the group reaches Spirit City and reports to Bibi Dong, Gui Mei and Yue Guan resume their assigned duties, remaining available for the Pope’s summons 29 32.

Relationships

• Bibi Dong — His superior and the recipient of his reports. She trusts him with retrieving and escorting Yu Tianling 3 6 13.
• Yu Tianling — His principal charge and benefactor. Years of accompanying him culminate in a lifelong oath of protection after the gift of the Ghost Shadow Jade Flower 18.
• Yue Guan — Fellow Spirit Hall elder and partner during the later Sunset Forest expedition. Yue Guan warns him to subdue the Ghost Tiger before it can summon reinforcements 27 32.
