Background / History

Canghui Academy and Recruitment

Ye Mengyang grew up in an ordinary village. His uncle-in-law, Ye Zhiqiu, awakened his Martial Soul, and he subsequently attended Canghui Academy. While returning to school after taking leave for a family funeral, he stopped at the Soto Great Soul Arena to participate in Soul Fighting 46.

There, he faced an enraged Dai Mubai. Having watched Dai Mubai’s previous matches, Ye Mengyang respected his combat instincts but remained confident in his own strength. He weathered Dai Mubai’s initial attacks, disrupted his close-range assault, and ultimately knocked him from the stage. The victory brought Ye Mengyang’s arena record to thirty wins and seventeen losses 45.

His performance attracted Yu Tianling, who invited him to a VIP room. After examining his Martial Soul, Yu Tianling identified it as a Xuanming Turtle rather than a true Black Tortoise and offered the prospect of its future evolution. Recognizing that following Spirit Hall’s Holy Son offered better opportunities than remaining at Canghui Academy, Ye Mengyang accepted. He wrote to Ye Zhiqiu before leaving with Yu Tianling and Zhu Zhuqing 46.

For the following month and a half, Ye Mengyang and Zhu Zhuqing fought daily at the arena and cultivated at the Forest Hotel. He later accompanied them to the Star Dou Great Forest for Zhu Zhuqing’s fourth Soul Ring before traveling to Spirit City 46.

Heavenly Stairway Trials

After more than three years with Spirit Hall, Ye Mengyang joined Yu Tianling’s companions at the God of War’s inheritance site in Sunset Forest. The Origin-God-Pillar assigned him the Black Level Six Trials, with a first task of climbing 666 steps of the Heavenly Stairway 64 65 66.

He initially struggled around the seventieth step. Although his defense-oriented physique gave him an advantage over Ye Lingling at first, her relentless training eventually allowed her to overtake him, leaving him last among the group 67 73.

During disturbances from Yu Tianling’s trial, Ye Mengyang, Yan, and Xie Yue suffered fractures after crashing to the ground. Ye Lingling healed them with Complete Healing. Ye Mengyang recovered quickly enough to tease Yan about his fall 75.

When the God of War Domain weakened during Yu Tianling’s Seventh Trial, the companions seized the opportunity to finish their stairway objectives. Ye Mengyang subsequently absorbed a God-Given Soul Ring and discovered that only his final trial—Martial Soul Evolution in the Far North—remained 76 77 78.

Far North and the Water God’s Inheritance

Following the God King of Equality’s advice, Yu Tianling took Ye Mengyang and Ye Lingling to seek the Snow Empress. During their journey into the Core Circle, the two deliberately endured reduced protection from the cold to temper their bodies and refine their Soul Power 77 78 79.

The Snow Empress recognized a resemblance between Ye Mengyang’s Xuanming Turtle and a mysterious creature that had fallen into the Far North long ago. Acting on her directions, Yu Tianling and Ye Mengyang searched the snowfields. Ye Mengyang suggested that the creature might have become buried beneath the accumulated snow 82.

At Yu Tianling’s suggestion, he released his Martial Soul’s presence from an icy mountain summit. He persisted until nearly exhausting his Soul Power, when the ice beneath him opened and swallowed him into a fissure that immediately closed. Inside, he underwent secret-realm trials, reached Black Tortoise, and received its inheritance 83 86.

The encounter fulfilled his long-awaited Martial Soul evolution and also unlocked the inheritance of the First-Level Water God. He returned with the Black Tortoise Shield and reunited with his companions near the Snow Empress’s palace 85 86.

Return to Spirit City

On the return journey, Ye Mengyang helped Gu Na catch and prepare fish, then invited her to travel with the group. Later, moved by her fabricated account of losing her family, he offered assistance through Spirit Hall or Spirit Hall Academy 87 88.

Back in Spirit City, Yu Tianling revealed Ye Mengyang’s divine inheritance to their friends. After joking with Yan, Ye Mengyang promised to look after everyone once he became a god. When Gu Na subsequently confronted Yu Tianling, he remained with the companions whom Yu Tianling instructed to stay back and watch over Zhu Zhuqing’s ongoing trial 89 90.

Personality

Ye Mengyang combines confidence in combat with sustained diligence. Against Dai Mubai, he stays composed rather than matching his opponent’s anger. His later progress reflects persistent study and cultivation, supported by private instruction from Spirit Pill Douluo 45 64.

He is willing to face danger for advancement without being fearless. The Snow Empress’s strength and the Far North’s cold unsettle him, but he continues training and agrees to attempt contact with Black Tortoise. Even when the mountain-top attempt appears unsuccessful, he resolves to expend his remaining Soul Power before stopping 78 79 83.

Among friends, he is playful, hospitable, and fond of food. He readily teases Yan and Yu Tianling, eagerly anticipates grilled fish, and offers help to Gu Na both as a stranded traveler and as someone apparently searching for family 75 78 87 88.

Abilities & Skills

Xuanming Turtle Martial Soul

His original Martial Soul specializes in defense. During Martial Soul Possession, his body enlarges, an enormous shell rises from his back, and blue-black light surrounds him 45 46.

• Layered shielding: Forms a black dome of Soul Power, then reinforces it through his first Soul Ring. This blocks Dai Mubai’s White Tiger Fierce Light Wave without visible damage 45.
• Defensive limits: Dai Mubai’s full-strength, rank-thirty-three close-range assault cracks the dome before Ye Mengyang counters 45.
• Evolution potential: Yu Tianling identifies the Xuanming Turtle’s potential to become a true Black Tortoise, making it a central reason for his recruitment 46.

Mystic Air Tremor

His Second Soul Skill produces trembling black light and a rolling rumble, forcefully repelling nearby opponents 45.

• Knocks Dai Mubai away before he can exploit the breach in Ye Mengyang’s shield 45.
• Can also cause some dizziness when the opponent’s cultivation is lower than his own 45.

Third Soul Skill

His unnamed Third Soul Skill manifests a blue-black Black Tortoise phantom that lunges at the target 45.

• Used immediately after Mystic Air Tremor to strike Dai Mubai while he is airborne and slam him into the arena floor 45.

Black Tortoise Martial Soul

After receiving Black Tortoise’s inheritance, his Xuanming Turtle fully evolves into the divine beast Black Tortoise 86.

• The evolution itself grants five Soul Power levels 86.
• His post-evolution Soul Ring configuration becomes three purple and four black 86.
• He gains access to the Water God’s Godhood Inheritance; this makes him an inheritor, not yet a confirmed god 86 89.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

• Black Tortoise Shield — A divine artifact passed directly to him through the Water God’s inheritance. It supports both attack and defense and serves as his flying platform on the return from the Far North 86.
  • Classified as a Quasi-God King artifact 86.
  • Forged from the first divine beast Black Tortoise’s back shell through hundreds of thousands of years of refinement by a human artifact refiner 86.
  • Can naturally evolve into a God King artifact if the Water God’s inheritor reaches the God King realm 86.

• Yu Tianling — Recruiter, leader, and benefactor. Identifies his Martial Soul, brings him into Spirit Hall, and personally helps him seek its evolution 46 78 82 83.
• Ye Zhiqiu — Uncle-in-law who awakened his Martial Soul. Ye Mengyang informs him by letter when accepting Yu Tianling’s invitation to leave Canghui Academy 46.
• Yan — Close friend. The two cultivate, study, and eat together, and frequently joke at each other’s expense 64 75 89.
