Appearance
- Hair: Long, lustrous wine-red hair 55.
- Eyes: Azure blue, becoming fiery red during Martial Soul Possession 55 60.
- Entrance measurements: 1.61 metres tall and 47 kilograms at age twelve 55.
- Martial Soul Possession: An icy layer surrounds her body, and the nearby air rapidly chills 60.
- Initial Soul Rings: Two yellow rings and one purple ring 60.
Personality
Meng Hongchen is proud of her talent and initially takes Xu Zhengyang’s challenge to fight both siblings as an insult. After their first defeat, she asks Jing Hongchen why he did not intervene on their behalf. Nevertheless, she accepts repeated challenges rather than abandoning competition: she and Xiao Hongchen honour their wagers and become the class’s most diligent physical trainees 60 63 75 77.
Her attitude toward Xu Zhengyang gradually shifts from resentment to admiration. She openly praises his strength after his duel with Ji Juechen and later blushes when Xiao Hongchen teases them. Although Xu Zhengyang senses that she likes him, they continue interacting as close friends without acknowledging a romantic relationship 83 100.
In competition, she is patient and tactically disciplined. During the tournament final, she conceals the strength of her poison until it has spread through Shrek’s lineup, then refuses to supply an antidote before the contest is over 116 119.
Abilities & Skills
Vermilion-Eyed Ice Toad
A top-grade poison Martial Soul possessing both ice and fire attributes. Its distinctive toxin combines bone-piercing cold with heat rather than functioning as ordinary cold poison 61 71.
- Airborne poisoning: Releases mist that can spread across an arena or chill an area extending dozens of metres around her 61 80.
- Weapon-borne poisoning: Infuses her longsword with poison and freezing cold, making close-range exchanges dangerous even before a decisive strike lands 60 73 80.
- Delayed effects: Low concentrations initially cause subtle Soul Power disturbances; prolonged exposure can produce numbness, slowed movement, unconsciousness, and convulsions 80 117 127.
- Cross-realm threat: Can poison opponents one major realm above her, including Soul Emperors during her Soul King stage 110 114 117.
- Advanced control: By the final, she can quietly release and control her poison without visibly summoning her Martial Soul. Zhou Yi judges her Martial Soul cultivation to be comparable to that of Shrek’s students 119.
Documented Soul Skills
| Soul Ring | Skill | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| First | Ice Toad Poison | Greatly increases toxicity, producing a distinctive poison associated with alternating ice and fire 61 116. |
| Second | Ice Poison Ring | Multiplies the potency of the Vermilion-Eyed Ice Toad’s poison; can form a large ring accompanied by ice-and-fire energy 61 80. |
| Third | Ice Refraction | Creates a mirrorlike ice disc and shifts her position through refracted light and shadow. Useful for rapid repositioning, though explicitly inferior to true Teleportation 61. |
| Fourth | Ice Feedback | Uses fire to stimulate Ice Toad Poison, converting it into energy that feeds back into her body and maximises her offensive attributes 116. |
Close-Combat Soul Engineering
Meng Hongchen combines sword-based Soul Tool combat with her Martial Soul rather than relying exclusively on either discipline 77 80.
- Engages opponents at close range while poison accumulates in the surrounding air 61 80.
- Uses speed and sword counterattacks to withstand Chen An’s ranged Soul Tool assault before incapacitating him 80.
- Coordinates naturally with Xiao Hongchen, pairing her close combat with his cannon fire 60 61.
- Develops enough practical combat ability after a year of training that the siblings together begin posing a threat to Xu Zhengyang, though they still cannot defeat him 77.
Limitations and Counters
- Friendly fire: Early in her training, she cannot freely release toxins among unfamiliar teammates without risking poisoning them 71.
- Poison-resistant opponents: Xu Zhengyang withstands her toxins through his powerful physique and resistance developed during training in poisonous environments 62.
- Mist dispersal: Xu Zhengyang’s sweeping spear movements and spinning attacks disperse her airborne poison and reduce exposure 62.
- Ultimate Ice: Huo Yuhao’s Eternal Frozen Domain blocks the poison around himself and Wang Dong. Ordinary ice is insufficient: Ling Luochen’s Ice Radiance Ring fails to stop it, and the poison spreads along its ice 117.
- Special flames and barriers: Ma Xiaotao’s Phoenix flames make the poison relatively ineffective against her; Absolute Defense also prevents her exposure during the team battle 118.
Self-Poisoning and Treatment
Her Martial Soul’s toxins also erode her own body. While still a Soul Elder, she recognises that she is already mildly poisoned 74.
- Physical conditioning: A year of intensive training reduces her pain, discomfort, and the extent of toxin damage by strengthening her body’s resistance 78.
- Soul Bone treatment: Xu Zhengyang recommends a top-grade strength-type or poison-attribute Soul Bone over ten thousand years old to receive the accumulated toxins 78.
- Proposed complete remedy: He identifies a ten-thousand-year jade phosphorus seven-absolute flower as the preferred means of fully resolving the problem; its use on Meng Hongchen is not documented 78.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Soul Tool longsword: Her principal melee weapon. A Level 4 sword is confirmed during the class battle, and she channels cold and poison through it 72 73.
- Soul Tool armour: Used alongside her sword for protection; Xu Zhengyang shatters her armour during their first duel 61.
- Ring of Teleportation: A Level 6 Soul Tool capable of teleporting its wearer ten metres. She uses it with Xu Zhengyang to press their attack on Dai Yueheng 118.
- Fifty-thousand-year Ice Jade Scorpion Soul Bone: Purchased for her at auction for 33 million Gold Soul Coins through Ma Rufeng’s bidding. Its absorption is not shown in the supplied account 104.
- Ice Giant Dragon Head Soul Bone: Allocated jointly to her and Xiao Hongchen among the championship rewards; the eventual recipient is not specified 129.
Background / History
Academy Entry and Early Defeats
Meng Hongchen enters Class One of the Sun Moon Imperial Soul Engineering Academy at twelve. As the granddaughter of dean Jing Hongchen and one of the empire’s celebrated young geniuses, she attracts considerable expectations. Her entrance results demonstrate exceptional Soul Power but also expose the gap between her cultivation and physical conditioning 55.
During the class monitor dispute, she joins Xiao Hongchen against Xu Zhengyang. Their coordinated cannon fire, sword attacks, and poison fail to overcome his strength and resistance. Xu Zhengyang defeats them both, and Jing Hongchen refuses to retaliate, instead insisting that they learn from the loss 60 61 63.
She later participates in the thirty-nine-against-one class battle. Xu Zhengyang disarms her Level 4 sword and sends her flying with a spear strike, leaving her badly injured. His subsequent warning about poison Soul Masters harming themselves prompts her to reconsider the dangers of her own Martial Soul 71 72 73 74.
Physical Training and Reserve Selection
Following the class’s defeat, Meng Hongchen and Xiao Hongchen undertake unusually intensive physical training and repeated combat assessments. Over the next year, they repeatedly challenge Xu Zhengyang, losing wagers but steadily improving their practical ability 75 77.
After her first year, she chooses the Practical Control Department and seeks Xu Zhengyang’s advice about self-poisoning. His proposed treatment becomes the basis of an arrangement granting him access to the academy’s secret lava earthfire. The siblings subsequently escort him to the Hengduan Mountains 77 78 79.
She joins the Sun Moon Team as a reserve while still a rank-45 Soul Ancestor and Level 4 Soul Engineer. In her assessment match, she defeats the starting member Chen An by quietly poisoning him before sharply increasing the toxin’s potency 80.
Tournament Final Against Shrek
Xu Zhengyang deliberately keeps Meng Hongchen out of the tournament’s earlier matches, preserving her unusual abilities as a surprise weapon. Spectators largely mistake her absence for a sign that she is an inexperienced reserve 97 110.
In the final’s team battle, she fights as an apparent close-combat Soul Engineer while gradually contaminating the arena. She then activates her skills during a coordinated assault on Dai Yueheng. Bei Bei, Xu Sanshi, and Ling Luochen collapse from poisoning, while Dai Yueheng suffers severe wounds and concentrated toxin exposure 114 116 117 119.
As she and Xu Zhengyang continue attacking Dai Yueheng with Rings of Teleportation, Xuan Zi intervenes after Shrek’s surrender is called, knocking them back and triggering a dispute over interference. Meng Hongchen subsequently refuses Zhou Yi’s request for an antidote until the competition has ended 118 119.
After Xu Zhengyang and Huo Yuhao fight to a draw in the individual competition, Meng Hongchen defeats Xiao Xiao with poison and then defeats Wang Dong, securing the Sun Moon Team’s championship. Ma Rufeng later credits her group poisoning with laying the foundation for victory 127 129.
Continued Cultivation
Following the championship, Jing Hongchen acknowledges how rapidly both siblings have improved while training alongside Xu Zhengyang. The academy abandons its proposed exchange programme with Shrek and instead develops its Martial Soul teaching through the incorporation of Zhengtian Academy 138 139.
Over the following two and a half years, Meng Hongchen reaches rank 63 Soul Emperor. Her progress benefits from both Xu Zhengyang’s cultivation methods and the academy’s newly established, comprehensive Soul Master curriculum 153.
Relationships
- Xiao Hongchen — Elder brother and frequent combat partner. Their natural coordination supports combined ranged and melee attacks, and both repeatedly challenge Xu Zhengyang 55 61 77.
- Jing Hongchen — Grandfather and academy dean. He places great hopes in her, personally treats her injuries, and encourages her to improve rather than seek revenge for defeats 55 63 75.
- Xu Zhengyang — Class monitor, rival, teammate, and close friend. His criticism transforms her training and helps alleviate her self-poisoning. Her admiration develops into an implied romantic interest, but neither openly acknowledges a relationship 75 78 83 100.
- Xu Jie — Homeroom teacher who oversees the physical training and practical combat assessments that reshape her development 57 75.
- Ma Rufeng — Team leader and trainer. Assesses her ability as a reserve and later recognises her decisive contribution to the championship 80 129.
