The "Massacre" on the Track (Part One)
Just as Fang Yuan was about to copy "Intermediate Agility Enhancement," the school's track and field team walked onto the running track and began warming up.
Fang Yuan swept his gaze over the team and unexpectedly spotted someone with "Advanced Agility Enhancement."
After a moment's thought, he understood why.
An ability like Advanced Agility Enhancement would naturally be most useful in track and field's running events.
Competitive sports still existed in the Star Power era.
Of course, the emergence of Awakeners had completely changed the rules of competitive sports.
Track and field, for instance, was divided into different groups based on Star Power level.
It was much like the weight classes in weightlifting and boxing.
Athletes at the same level competed against each other.
Moreover, the use of Star Power was strictly controlled during official competitions, so the contests still tested the limits of the human body and athletic technique.
Even with Star Power banned in official competitions, attribute-enhancement abilities were still an enormous help to athletes during training.
Thus, Fang Yuan found several students with attribute-enhancement abilities on the school's track and field team.
The boy with "Advanced Agility Enhancement" seemed to be a new member. His agility was 15, placing him below average on the team.
The team member with the highest agility was their captain, Lei Minghao.
Fang Yuan remembered that he had taken second place in several events at last year's Donghai City Secondary School Games.
Lei Minghao's ability was also Agility Enhancement, but it was intermediate rather than advanced.
Attribute-enhancement abilities could increase an Awakener's cultivation speed.
Since Fang Yuan had come across "Advanced Agility Enhancement," he naturally had to borrow it.
He walked over and tapped the boy's arm with the back of his hand, copying the ability as he said, "Hey, could you guys move aside?"
The dozen or so team members all turned their heads and asked in hostile tones, "Who are you?"
"Could you not block the track while you're warming up? I just want to use it," Fang Yuan explained.
The team members were standing on the track to warm up, blocking all the lanes.
Lei Minghao glanced at Fang Yuan and said, "Don't you know the track belongs to our team in the morning?"
Fang Yuan spread his hands. "There are only a dozen or so of you. You can't possibly fill the whole track. Can't you at least move aside while you're warming up?"
"Who's this guy? Any of you know him?" Lei Minghao asked the others with a mocking expression.
One of the boys on the team was Zhou Xiangming from Class One.
Since they took martial arts class together, he recognized Fang Yuan.
"He's Fang Yuan from Class Two, the one at the bottom of martial arts class."
The dozen or so team members immediately jeered, "If you're at the bottom of martial arts class, why aren't you back memorizing your books and preparing for the academic exams? What are you doing here?"
Fang Yuan was a little speechless. "I just want to use the track. Even that gets me mocked by a whole crowd?"
"Hurry up and get lost. Don't get in the way of our training." The team members began shooing him away.
Looking at these arrogant fellows, Fang Yuan felt as though a huge pile of Rage Points was coming straight at him.
So he deliberately muttered loudly enough for all of them to hear, "You haven't won a single championship, but you sure put on airs. No champion's fate, but all of a champion's attitude."
"What did you say?!" The entire team bristled and crowded around him, looking ready to fight.
Fang Yuan grinned as he watched a string of +3s and +5s pop up in Rage Points.
Just one remark had earned him 72 Rage Points. Added to the 95 he had left, his total reached 167.
Zhou Xiangming, the boy from Class One, leaned close to Lei Minghao's ear and whispered, "Captain, this is the guy who pissed off Young Master Li last time. How about we teach him a lesson?"
Lei Minghao poked Fang Yuan in the chest and threatened, "Kid, you'd better know what's good for you and get lost, or I'll make sure you can't get by at No. 1 High."
Fang Yuan spread his hands. "I've seen people hog basketball courts and tennis courts, but this is my first time seeing anyone hog a running track. In that case, let's have a race. Winner gets the track."
Disputes over courts were fairly common at school. The more civilized way to settle them was to play a match, with the losers getting lost.
"A footrace?"
"Yeah."
"Hahaha... Are you an idiot? You're actually challenging the track and field team to a track event!" The team members burst out laughing.
"Are we racing or not? Hurry up," Fang Yuan urged.
"Captain, this guy's way too cocky. Race him and teach him a lesson!" Not one of the team members took Fang Yuan seriously.
Lei Minghao had no interest in racing Fang Yuan himself, so he casually asked the teammates beside him, "Which of you wants to race him?"
Zhou Xiangming from Class One immediately stepped forward. "Captain, let me race him."
He wanted to beat Fang Yuan in the race, then go claim credit with Li Weilian.
Lei Minghao glanced at him and whispered into his ear, "This isn't an official race. There are no rules. Just use your ability and crush him."
A knowing smile curled Zhou Xiangming's lips. He looked at Fang Yuan and asked, "I'll race you. One thousand meters. Do you dare?"
"Sure."
Fang Yuan began warming up while guiding Star Power through his body according to the Star Power cultivation model, stimulating his muscles and drawing out his body's potential.
Once they were both ready, Lei Minghao brought over a small flag, raised it, and shouted, "Ready, go!"
As a member of the track and field team, Zhou Xiangming had received professional training and had a solid foundation.
Both his start and acceleration were extremely fast.
The instant "go" rang out, he shot forward.
He launched himself like a cheetah.
Fang Yuan had never received professional training and had no experience with racing technique.
As a result, he fell five body lengths behind right at the start.
Seeing this, the dozen or so other team members all jeered, "That's it? And you dared race our team? What were you thinking?"
Fang Yuan was in no hurry. He ran as hard as he could while channeling Star Power into his eyes to examine the Class One boy's attributes.
His opponent's base agility was 16, and his ability was Basic Agility Enhancement.
However, he had not used his ability yet.
Fang Yuan's current agility was 15. He was at a disadvantage in both racing technique and agility, but the gap was not too large, and the distance between them had not widened much.
Lei Minghao shouted from beside the track, "Speed up! Crush him!"
Zhou Xiangming looked back at Fang Yuan and taunted, "Guess how many laps I'll beat you by?"
As he spoke, he activated "Basic Agility Enhancement." His speed abruptly surged by 20%, and he raced ahead like a cheetah, leaving Fang Yuan farther and farther behind.
After adjusting to the rhythm of running, Fang Yuan activated "Advanced Agility Enhancement (Mimicry)" as well. His speed instantly surged by 40%, and he chased after Zhou Xiangming at an even faster pace, rapidly closing the gap.
Zhou Xiangming had thought he had left Fang Yuan far behind and was feeling pleased with himself.
Then Fang Yuan's voice suddenly rang out beside his ear. "Hey, you don't seem that fast."
Zhou Xiangming looked back, his eyes widening in shock. "You... how did you catch up?"
"You're as slow as a snail. Anyone with feet could catch up." Fang Yuan flashed him a very friendly grin.
The sight of that smile only made Zhou Xiangming's anger surge. He sprinted forward with all his might, trying to pull away.
The angrier he became, the happier Fang Yuan was.
His Rage Points kept rising.
After catching up, Fang Yuan began accelerating on the right to "overtake" him.
Zhou Xiangming ran with every ounce of strength he had, but could only watch as Fang Yuan ran past him.
After passing him, Fang Yuan slowed down again and dropped behind him, then sped up to "overtake" him once more. Smiling at him, he said, "I passed through your whole world, and then... passed through a second time, and a third..."
Zhou Xiangming watched Fang Yuan "pass through" beside him over and over, sometimes on his left, sometimes on his right, until he was utterly broken.
