Background / History
Before becoming Barbatos, Venti was a formless wisp among the thousand winds. Around 2,600 years before the present, he befriended a boy living within the wind walls of Old Mondstadt under Decarabian, the Lord of Storms. The boy played the lyre for him and longed to see the world beyond the walls 2.
The wind spirit and the boy participated in the rebellion against Decarabian. The boy died during the uprising, pierced by two arrows. When the screen reveals their story, Diluc and Kaeya infer that Venti walks the world in his friend’s likeness to commemorate him 2.
After becoming the Anemo Archon, Barbatos supported the establishment of a free city without a ruling king. He expended divine power to disperse Mondstadt’s ice and snow, leaving it with springlike weather throughout the year; his winds also sheared the tops from mountains 15 18.
Five hundred years before the present, the Heavenly Principles summoned Teyvat’s gods underground to fight. Venti was consequently unable to return in time to prevent Rustam’s death during the dragon disaster. Rustam’s lover, Rosalyne—later La Signora—resented him for his absence, while Venti retained a desire to offer her something in recompense 16.
Appearance
Venti appears as a youthful bard whose resemblance to the boy from Old Mondstadt becomes an early clue to his identity 2 17.
- Clothing: Green attire described as old aristocratic dress 2.
- Hair: Braids that can illuminate when he uses divine power; the other gods notice that they never light up during his supposed defeat by La Signora 18.
- Original form: A tiny wind spirit without a human body 2.
Personality
Venti is playful, shameless, and fond of presenting himself as an unreliable drunkard. He earns drinks through singing, wheedling, and acting cute, and considers obtaining wine through tricks more entertaining than receiving it because of his divine status. He prefers being addressed as Venti rather than Barbatos and dislikes the restrictions that fervent worship could place on his everyday freedom 15 16.
His frivolity coexists with affection for humanity. He trusts Mondstadt’s people to accept his identity without demanding that he become a conventional ruler. Barbara’s unwavering devotion nevertheless makes him uncomfortable, particularly when she defends his misleading behavior; seeing her reaction to the damaged Holy Lyre prompts him to consider a genuine, costly restoration 16 17.
Venti is also deliberately cautious. He conceals dangerous information about Celestia and monitors whether the screen can protect its users from interference. Even after discovering that he can speak Asmoday’s name without punishment, he refuses to reveal secrets he considers genuinely deadly 20 47.
Abilities & Skills
Anemo Authority
Venti commands wind as the Anemo Archon, with historical feats far exceeding the weakness he habitually claims 15 18.
- Wind transformation: Turns into a breeze to leave Mondstadt for Windrise 2.
- Large-scale environmental alteration: Dispersed Mondstadt’s snowstorms and reshaped mountains 15 18.
- Elemental defense: His on-screen counterpart blocks part of La Signora’s ice storm with Anemo energy 17.
- Wind-borne perception: Is described as able to hear words scattered upon the wind 47.
- Uncertain present limits: Claims that neglecting his divine duties has diminished his power, but Lumine and the other gods recognize his supposed helplessness against La Signora as an act 18 41.
Music and the Holy Lyre
Venti uses music in his efforts to soothe Dvalin. His proposed treatment depends on restoring the Holy Lyre der Himmel’s Anemo energy with purified dragon tears 15.
- Can use the replenished lyre to calm Dvalin so that Lumine can approach and remove the corruption 15.
- Cannot easily resolve the corrosion from Durin’s poisonous blood himself; he identifies Lumine’s purification ability as essential 15.
- Recognizes that his on-screen counterpart restores only the damaged lyre’s exterior, not its lost power or authority 17.
- Believes a complete repair would be possible, but could require him to sleep at Windrise for several months afterward 17.
Bardcraft and Deception
Venti makes his living through song and repeatedly uses performance to conceal his intentions 16 18.
- Feigned weakness: Allows his on-screen confrontation with La Signora to resemble an overwhelming defeat 18.
- Staged impact: Flies backward before her final kick fully connects, a detail noticed by Kaeya 18.
- Misdirection: Calls the lyre’s apparent restoration an unreliable “illusion,” despite having physically restored its exterior 17.
- Discreet movement: Appears before La Signora without her noticing his approach and vanishes after offering his Gnosis 19.
Knowledge of the Gods and Celestia
As an original member of The Seven, Venti knows information unavailable to most of Teyvat 20 33.
- Explains that possession of a Gnosis does not itself make someone one of The Seven 20.
- Shares information privately with Lumine concerning the deeper circumstances of her journey 30.
- Identifies the white-haired god who separated the twins as Asmoday 47.
- Distinguishes information he can safely disclose from secrets that could provoke punishment 6 47.
Equipment / Items
- Anemo Gnosis — A chess-piece-like object containing high-quality Anemo divine power. Although the video depicts La Signora forcibly taking it, Venti voluntarily gives it to her in the altered present 18 19.
- Holy Lyre der Himmel — Barbatos’s divine artifact, held by the Church of Favonius and delivered to him for Dvalin’s treatment. Purified tears eventually restore its former glory 16 30 50.
- Cider and Dandelion Wine — His favored drinks at Angel’s Share. A bottle carrying his aura becomes Barbara’s first quiz reward, leaving Venti bewildered when the cider disappears from his hands 2 16.
Relationships
- The boy of Old Mondstadt — His friend and fellow rebel against Decarabian. Their resemblance leads Diluc and Kaeya to interpret Venti’s human appearance as a memorial to him 2.
- Dvalin — An old friend whom Venti is determined to rescue from corruption. He first proposes soothing treatment, then prepares to force the withdrawn dragon out of Stormterror’s Lair 15 50.
- Lumine — Partner in Dvalin’s rescue and recipient of information about the gods. She readily challenges his claims of weakness and considers him a friend 15 18 30 47.
- Paimon — Calls him “Tone-Deaf Bard,” a nickname he cheerfully accepts 15.
- Jean — A devoted believer who gradually learns to address him as Venti. She coordinates Dvalin’s rescue and expels the Fatui delegation after witnessing the attack depicted on-screen 15 18.
- Barbara — An exceptionally fervent follower whose devotion survives his exposed tricks. Her efforts to organize an honor guard are stopped by Jean, though she gains permission to bring him food and drink 16 17 50.
- Diluc — His tavern host and frequent obstacle to obtaining free alcohol. Diluc refuses to let even Mondstadt’s god help himself to the liquor cabinet 15 16.
- Kaeya — Respects him without sharing the others’ degree of worship; notices the revealing flaw in his staged defeat 18.
- La Signora / Rosalyne — Resents him over Rustam’s death. Venti acknowledges her grief, gives her his Gnosis, and encourages her to consider a future beyond the past 16 19.
- Zhongli / Morax — An old friend whom Venti teases over his staged death and funeral. Venti’s amusement helps viewers suspect that Rex Lapis’s assassination is a deception 25 26.
- Raiden Ei — An old acquaintance from gatherings of The Seven. Seeing her unchanged manner briefly makes him feel that his Erosion has eased 19.
- Alice and the Hexenzirkel — Alice challenges his claims of weakness by recalling his teasing of her fellow witches; Venti calls the group a handful 41.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Exposure of Barbatos’s Identity
- “The Boy and the Whirlwind” reveals Venti’s past and prompts viewers to connect the familiar green-clad bard with Barbatos. Anticipating trouble, he flees to Windrise with cider 2.
- He joins the gathering at Angel’s Share while Mondstadt’s leaders discuss Dvalin and the Fatui 14.
- Footage of him apparently restoring the Holy Lyre effectively confirms his identity. Barbara publicly recognizes him, while Venti laments losing the ability to drink in peace 16.
The Gnosis and La Signora
- The screen depicts La Signora humiliating Venti and taking his Gnosis outside the cathedral. Mondstadt’s anger culminates in Jean ordering her delegation to leave 17 18.
- Lumine, Kaeya, and the other gods expose indications that Venti deliberately staged his defeat 18.
- Rather than reproduce the confrontation, Venti privately intercepts La Signora and hands over the Gnosis. He tells her that she still has a future without demanding that she forget the past 19.
- His subsequent explanation establishes that Gnoses are not indispensable to the gods’ standing as The Seven 20.
Preparing Dvalin’s Rescue
- Venti identifies Lumine’s ability to purify Dvalin’s tears and outlines a treatment using the restored Holy Lyre 15.
- Barbara delivers the lyre while the Knights gather additional tears 30.
- By the end of the second day, five purified tears have restored the instrument. With Dvalin refusing to leave Stormterror’s Lair, Venti prepares for compulsory treatment; the rescue itself has not yet occurred in the supplied chapters 50.
Revealing Asmoday’s Name
- When Asmoday appears among the answers to a quiz about Furina’s Vision, Venti discovers that mentioning her does not trigger the punishment he previously feared 47.
- He identifies her to Lumine, repeatedly says her name in relief, and rules her out as the giver of Furina’s Vision while withholding more dangerous secrets 47.
Notable Quotes
“Mondstadt without wine is even harder to imagine than Liyue without contracts.” 29
“I won't tell you to let go of the past. But you aren't without a future. You could try looking ahead.” 19
“It's just a name. I won't reveal any genuinely deadly secrets, even here.” 47
Trivia
- Venti sneezes while addressing Diona through the discussion screen and wonders whether allergies can be triggered remotely. The passage raises the possibility without establishing its cause 20.
- Despite calling himself the weakest of The Seven, he repeatedly finds his claim challenged by people familiar with his feats or tricks 18 41.
