Background / History
Childhood and the Silver Hand
Fenna was born to Admiral Daelin and a High Elf mother. She lived with her mother in Silvermoon City as a child, but her mixed heritage left her less than fully welcome there. After answering the Holy Light’s call, she joined the Order of the Silver Hand and spent many years in Lordaeron, eventually regarding it as her homeland 53 201.
She became one of Uther the Lightbringer’s highly regarded students and served as a squad captain. Despite studying under a teacher associated with the Holy path, she specialized in Retribution and held militant views closer to those of Alexandros Mograine 63 73 111.
Her illegitimate birth shaped her relationship with her father’s family. She initially refused to acknowledge Jaina as her younger sister, contrasting Jaina’s public standing with her own concealed identity. Jaina herself did not yet know of their relationship 39 68 122.
Exposing the Cult of the Damned
Fenna joined Calia, Jaina, and Jiang Jie in investigating the Cult of the Damned. She offered to seek help from three Silver Hand units before the raid on Baron Soroson’s residence 62.
Afterward, she pressed Harak the Lifebringer to arrest suspected cultists and confiscate their plague liquid. Harak rejected the possibility that his Paladins could be corrupted, despite Fenna’s warning that coercion, persuasion, or magic could compromise anyone. His certainty collapsed when Elmer was exposed as a cult member 66.
Becoming Ashbringer’s Wielder
Fenna carried the Holy Light crystal intended for Ashbringer to Ironforge. During Magni Bronzebeard’s week-long forging process, she remained beside it, contributed ideas about the weapon’s shape, and supplied Holy Light to unite the crystal with the blade. She also trained under a dwarven combat master 100.
Her participation imbued the sword with her spirit and feelings before she ever wielded it. Although she hesitated because Mograine had originally supplied the crystal, Magni explained that Ashbringer had already chosen her. Taking it transformed her into a Grand Knight 100.
The decision caused resentment within the Silver Hand. Some members viewed her as having taken Mograine’s rightful weapon, while senior knights questioned whether a newly promoted Grand Knight possessed the prestige to carry it. Fenna herself would have preferred advancement through her own strength, but her bond with Ashbringer prevented another wielder from gaining its recognition while she lived 111 124.
Scholomance and Recognition
After assisting at Andorhal, Fenna remained with Jiang Jie to help Tirion cleanse the area. Jiang Jie encouraged her to establish her reputation through a decisive victory and proposed attacking Scholomance 111.
As supreme commander of Chillwind Camp, Fenna led soldiers against Caer Darrow and entered Scholomance with Jiang Jie and Jaina. She served as the party’s main frontline fighter and greatest damage dealer, personally purifying Ras Frostwhisper and Darkmaster Gandling. During the fighting, Ashbringer awakened Wake of Ashes 117 119 122 124.
On their return to Lordaeron, Jiang Jie publicly emphasized her achievements: breaking the bridge defenses, fighting for five hours, and purifying more than a thousand undead. His account changed Harak’s attitude from suspicion to admiration and helped counter the stories surrounding her possession of Ashbringer 124 125.
Commanding the Ashen Army
Despite her growing strength, Fenna initially commanded only the small Chillwind outpost, with fewer than a thousand troops and roughly a hundred Silver Hand elites. Her youth, recent promotion, and exclusion by other Grand Knights limited her authority 170.
Jiang Jie recommended her to lead a campaign through Stratholme toward Quel’Thalas. Uther and Calia approved, and Uther assigned her a thousand elite troops, including two hundred Paladins, forming the Ashen Army 170 171.
During the campaign, Fenna rallied the soldiers by invoking their homeland, families, and loved ones, then led the charge herself. At Festival Lane, she awakened more than a hundred heroic Paladin spirits and received their Holy Light 181 185.
She later led the Ashen Army into Silvermoon City along the Dead Scar. There she rescued Liadrin and sixteen other Priests, encouraging Liadrin to take up weapons and become a Paladin 201.
Highlord of Stratholme
For cleansing Stratholme and helping reclaim Silvermoon City, Fenna was appointed Highlord of Stratholme, the highest governing official of the Eastern Plaguelands. High Elf Priests and rescued civilians joined the Ashen Army, with Liadrin leading those seeking Paladin training 211.
Fenna and her army spent months clearing Stratholme’s remaining undead. By the time Jiang Jie visited her there, the city housed more than ten thousand residents, with its first citizens receiving homes or shops 387.
Civil administration proved far less comfortable for her than battlefield command. After the Ashen Army lost nearly a third of its strength and Liadrin departed, Fenna struggled with security requests, merchant petitions, recruitment assignments, and public events. She worked until she fell asleep at her desk, prompting Jiang Jie to urge her to delegate 593.
Marriage, Protection, and Motherhood
Fenna’s relationship with Jiang Jie developed through their shared campaigns and mutual protection. Their reunion in Stratholme became openly romantic, though Chromie interrupted their private moment and rumors soon spread throughout the city 135 146 387 389.
When Fenna feared she might be pregnant, Jiang Jie promised to ask her father for her hand. Her pregnancy was subsequently confirmed, and their grand wedding brought together leaders and representatives from across Azeroth. Daelin attended, and her parentage became public knowledge 593 597.
Pregnancy changed her understanding of the Holy Light. Rather than follow Uther’s justice or Mograine and Tirion’s retribution, she chose protection for the sake of Jiang Jie and their child. This choice completed her advancement to Legendary, but conflicted with Ashbringer’s nature. She handed the sword to Mograine 607 625.
Fenna later gave birth to Olivia Jiang Huangyi. She proposed “Olivia,” while Jiang Jie chose the Chinese name after the Phoenix Robe in which their daughter was wrapped 701.
The family subsequently spent time in Stratholme, Sky City, and Pandaria. Fenna and Jiang Jie agreed to raise their daughter as their only child for the time being. In the finale, Fenna lives in seclusion in Sky City 836 865 868 900.
Appearance
- Build: Approximately 175 centimeters tall, with a tall, slender, well-proportioned figure 36.
- Heritage: Her beauty is attributed partly to her High Elf mother, while her armored appearance is described as particularly valiant and striking 36 53.
- Hair: Golden 836.
- Usual attire: Paladin armor and a two-handed sword; Ashbringer is nearly as tall as she is 36 113.
- Civilian dress: Before her romantic reunion with Jiang Jie, she had not worn skirts for years, having worn armor continuously since becoming a Paladin apprentice 387.
Personality
Fenna is straightforward, resolute, and committed to open, honorable combat. She dislikes indirect techniques such as the Pegasus Meteor Finger, but is fascinated by Taijiquan and eager to learn stronger, more direct martial arts. Her determination to improve is tied to her desire to earn recognition independently of her birth 68.
Her courage includes a willingness to stand against opponents she cannot defeat. She shields Jiang Jie from multiple Faceless Ones without retreating and prepares to meet Tichondrius even when she expects to die. Ashbringer responds to both her courage and her willingness to sacrifice herself 135 146.
Although confident and perceptive, Fenna becomes insecure when separated from Jiang Jie and worries about competing affections. Pregnancy softens her demeanor without removing her authority: when necessary, she still imposes her will as Stratholme’s Highlord and a Legendary Paladin 387 607 676.
She prefers military action to bureaucracy. Her administrative exhaustion reflects a dislike of the work rather than indifference to her responsibilities; she continues handling petitions even when deprived of sleep 593.
Abilities & Skills
Holy Light and Retribution
Fenna initially specializes in converting Holy Light into overwhelming offensive power 63.
- Sword of Holy Light: Combines with Ashbringer’s flames to deliver the strike that purifies Ras Frostwhisper 117.
- Hammer of Wrath: Uses a descending hammer of Holy Light against Brother Crowley 393.
- Anti-shadow combat: Ashbringer’s flames burn and purify Faceless Ones; the weapon is described as even more effective against shadow than against undead 134.
- Ranged limitations: Her early ranged attacks cannot overcome Ras Frostwhisper’s Frost Armor or eliminate Alexei through his supporting undead and necromancers 117 120.
Ashbringer Bond and Wake of Ashes
Fenna helped create Ashbringer’s soul, allowing a particularly deep bond between wielder and weapon 100 122.
- Purifying flames: Burns nearby weak undead to ash and allows her to hold narrow approaches against large numbers 115.
- Magical defense: The sword’s flames withstand Ras Frostwhisper’s frost spells without requiring Divine Shield 117.
- Wake of Ashes: Releases a sweeping eruption of holy flame that destroys dozens of undead and accompanying necromancers in one stroke 122.
- Power recovery: The embedded crystal replenishes her Holy Light even without meditation, greatly accelerating recovery 387.
- Compatibility limit: Choosing protection creates discord with the retribution-focused artifact, leading her to relinquish it 625.
Defensive Holy Light
Fenna uses protective techniques before formally choosing the Protection path 119 392.
- Divine Shield: Becomes completely immune to Scholomance’s opening wave of attacks while continuing to fight 119.
- Revolving light shields: Manifests three shields around herself during the confrontation in Tyr’s Hand 392.
- Legendary protection: Her commitment to safeguarding her family becomes the defining insight behind her Legendary advancement 625.
Heroic Spirit Summoning
Fenna can call upon buried heroic Paladin spirits willing to answer her summons 185.
- Awakens more than a hundred spirits at Festival Lane, each possessing High-Ranking Paladin-level Holy Light 185.
- Receives their combined power to cross the Legendary threshold through external empowerment 185.
- Uses heroic spirits in place of the unavailable Guardians of Ancient Kings 185.
Martial Arts
Fenna supplements Paladin training with dwarven combat instruction and Jiang Jie’s Chinese martial arts 100 595.
- Dwarven techniques: Studies under a combat master arranged by Magni during Ashbringer’s forging 100.
- Opened meridians: Jiang Jie directly opens the meridians throughout her body before teaching internal cultivation 595.
- Yin-yang dual cultivation: Uses a technique selected by Xiao Feng, reaching Xiantian with Jiang Jie’s assistance 595.
- Meditation: Learns a meditation method from Jiang Jie, though it cannot fully compensate for her later overwork 593.
Leadership
Fenna leads from the front and becomes especially influential among younger Paladins 170 181.
- Commands the Ashen Army’s original thousand elite troops, including two hundred Paladins 171.
- Rallies Silvermoon’s defenders and recruits Liadrin into the Paladin path 201.
- Oversees Stratholme’s security and reconstruction as Highlord 211 387 593.
