History
Exile and the Founding of Quel'Thalas
After the War of the Ancients, Dath'Remar Sunstrider's elven mages opposed the Night Elves' prohibition on spellcasting. Malfurion and Tyrande exiled them, and they crossed the ocean to establish Quel'Thalas. Their dependence on arcane energy caused severe mana addiction during the journey; creating the Sunwell subsequently relieved it 212.
Many founders came from ancient noble families, including the Sunstriders, Morningstars, and Sunfurys. The Windrunner family accompanied the Sunstrider ancestors and commanded the kingdom's rangers through successive generations 165 200.
Quel'Thalas fought the Amani Trolls over thousands of years. During the Troll Wars, 2,800 years before the Scourge invasion, the dynasty prepared a mass-evacuation teleportation array that ultimately went unused because the Empire of Arathor intervened 196 210.
The Second War and Withdrawal from the Alliance
The High Elves joined the Alliance during the Second War after suffering attacks by the Horde. Afterward, Anasterian withdrew Quel'Thalas, citing opposition to funding Orc internment camps. Near death, he called this withdrawal the greatest mistake of his life, believing continued membership would have secured help against the Scourge 206.
A small number of High Elves answered the Holy Light's call after the Second War and joined the Order of the Silver Hand. They were later recalled to defend Quel'Thalas 192.
The Scourge Invasion
Arthas's invasion devastated the southern kingdom. Deatholme fell, and fifty thousand inhabitants were raised as undead. Anasterian and the Silvermoon Council initially refused to seek outside aid, despite objections from Kael'thas and Sylvanas 178.
Sylvanas attempted to stop the Scourge at the Elrendar River, then made a stand at the Eastern Sanctum. She sent Halduron away with nearly half her remaining rangers to escort civilians, while Lor'themar carried a warning to Silvermoon. Jiang Jie rescued her immediately before Arthas could kill her 187 189.
Dar'Khan's betrayal allowed the enemy to reverse the Runestone Barrier's energy through the Key of the Three Moons. The backlash killed or severely injured at least half the High Elf mages, disabled many survivors, and reduced Silvermoon's fighting strength by at least half. Fallen elves were raised against their former comrades 197 198.
Anasterian died buying time for the defenders of Quel'Danas. Although the surviving mages eventually broke the spell severing their connection to the Sunwell, they could not rebuild the barrier before Arthas arrived. The Sunwell was corrupted during Kel'Thuzad's resurrection, making its destruction necessary to prevent contamination from spreading through the ley lines 208 210.
Survival and Reconstruction
Lordaeron's reinforcements helped prevent Silvermoon's destruction. After ten more days of fighting, Kael'thas's mages restored a local Runestone Barrier with less than one-tenth of its former power 211.
At Anasterian's funeral, Kael'thas refused coronation until he had killed Arthas and avenged his people. He also proposed renaming the race Blood Elves, but Sylvanas, Telestra, and others opposed abandoning their ancestral name. He consequently ruled as prince, and the new name was never formally adopted 212.
The losses shifted military power toward the rangers. Sylvanas became the kingdom's second-ranking figure, while the nearly annihilated Sunfury and Dawnblade legions faced years or decades of recovery. Some survivors instead joined the Ashen Army, including Liadrin and other aspiring paladins 211 212.
Return to Kalimdor
With mana addiction returning, Jiang Jie directed Kael'thas toward the arcane communities of Eldre'Thalas and Suramar. Kael'thas helped clear Dire Maul of ogres and demonic forces, accepted the Shen'dralar into Quel'Thalas, and began arranging permanent High Elf settlement there. Tyrande subsequently recognized his possession of the city 213 275 278.
By Jiang Jie's later visit, Eldre'Thalas had become their second city. At least one-third of High Elf mages lived there, while another third lived near Arcan'dor in Demon Fall Canyon, where a third city was being developed 677.
The expansion carried obligations to the Night Elves: environmental protection, oversight by Sentinels and Druids, and assistance against demons and coastal Naga. Before leaving for Outland, Kael'thas helped destroy the five-thousand-strong Hatecrest Naga force in Feralas 677.
Regency and the Outland Campaign
During Kael'thas's absence, Sylvanas governed as regent. She appointed reform-minded young councilors and increased troop-mustering efficiency to at least three times its previous level. After Quel'Thalas lost an arena match to the Kirin Tor, she announced plans to make regular arena participation part of military and mage evaluations 599 653.
Kael'thas continued seeking a lasting answer to his people's dependence on external energy. In Outland, he negotiated with the Naaru rather than attacking them. M'uru agreed to infuse a rebuilt Sunwell with Holy Light in exchange for help against Dimensius. Kael'thas also announced his intention to return to Silvermoon and become king; the agreement did not itself establish that the Sunwell had already been rebuilt 788 821.
Society and Culture
High Elf society placed considerable weight on noble ancestry. Anasterian regarded his people as the world's most civilized and noble race, looking down on humans, dwarves, Orcs, and even Night Elves. Ancient surname hierarchies reinforced this outlook, with celestial names carrying especially prestigious associations 165.
That pride was not universal in practice. Frontline rangers, accustomed to fighting and losing comrades, welcomed human reinforcements rather than rejecting them. The High Elves also placed great value on promises and reciprocal loyalty: Jiang Jie's assistance earned enduring friendship, material rewards, and access to closely guarded magical knowledge 176 192 203 223 280.
Their long lives could also discourage friendships with humans. The prospect of watching shorter-lived companions grow old and die was described as a source of emotional distance 841.
Magic in Everyday Life
- Domestic enchantment: Magic supported everyday conveniences such as enchanted brooms and flying carpets 653.
- Architecture: High Elf buildings featured intricate ornamentation, golden and crimson patterns, and magically supported structures. Silvermoon had undergone thousands of years of expansion 186 192.
- Restricted scholarship: Rommath supplied Jiang Jie with 360 mage textbooks, but explicitly requested that they not circulate—especially into Dalaran's hands 223.
- Conservative research: Despite their longer magical history, High Elves had fallen behind Dalaran in several fields. Their arena defeat exposed shortcomings in offensive spell variety compared with the Kirin Tor's more experimental approach 653.
Abilities and Skills
Innate Arcane Talents
Sunwell energy flowed through every High Elf, allowing even non-mages to use arcane power 181.
- Named racial talents include Arcane Affinity, Magic Resistance, Arcane Acuity, and Arcane Torrent 181.
- An ordinary adult ranger or civilian could possess mana comparable to a low-level mage 566.
- Mana reserves alone did not establish professional spellcasting ability, knowledge, or qualifications 566.
Agility and Longevity
High Elves excelled in speed and agility rather than physical strength 176.
- Their rangers moved substantially faster and more lightly than accompanying human warriors 176.
- Their physical constitutions were weaker than those of Night Elves and, by Jiang Jie's later assessment, even humans 223 603.
- Long lives allowed centuries or millennia of training, but did not prevent aging or fatal injury 190 194 202.
- High Elf–human unions could produce half-elves 9.
Ranger Arts
High Elf archery originated with the ancient Night Elves and developed through generations of refinement 216.
- Magical shots: Techniques included Arcane Shot, Concussive Shot, Piercing Shots, Rapid Fire, and Tracking Shot 181 216.
- Close combat: Qualified rangers trained in swordsmanship as well as archery, switching to blades when enemies closed or ammunition ran out 176 189.
- Limitations: Magical arrows remained finite during the Scourge invasion; ordinary arrows were much less effective against undead 188.
- Selection standards: Rangers underwent strict selection, and three hundred were assessed as more than a match for a thousand elite Ashen Army soldiers in open-country combat 176.
Spellcasting and Battle Magic
Before the invasion, Quel'Thalas possessed more mages than the seven human kingdoms combined and at least five Legendary mages 170 208.
- Mages coordinated large-scale spells, barriers, teleportation arrays, and ley-line networks 197 208 211 357.
- Battle-mage traditions combined close combat with magic, exemplified by Anasterian, Kael'thas, Spellbreakers, and Sunfury Guardsmen 446.
- High Elf mages could receive physical combat training and use spells to lighten their bodies and increase movement speed 365.
- Their expertise was not comprehensive: Kel'Thuzad's forbidden binding spell initially lay outside their studied fields 205.
Holy Light
High Elves included priests and paladins before the Scourge invasion, though paladins were relatively few 192.
- Priests healed wounds, protected allies, and helped dispel the plague 176 201.
- The invasion encouraged some priests and civilians to seek paladin training, with Liadrin leading one such group 211.
- Paladins later helped cleanse undead energy from the Sunwell Shrine 383.
Mana Addiction
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Origin | Prolonged exposure to the Well of Eternity created a dependence on arcane energy that persisted through the elves' bloodline 212. |
| Severity | Only a very small number could resist through willpower alone. Ancient accounts described consequences severe enough to threaten the race's survival 212 213. |
| Sunwell's function | Its continuous energy supply had suppressed the condition for thousands of years 212. |
| Return after the invasion | Affected elves became weak and agitated, with subtle physical changes 212. |
| Interim measures | The Shen'dralar's method of draining demonic energy and Arcan'dor provided relief, though Kael'thas initially regarded them as treating symptoms rather than the root problem 788. |
| Later position | Dire Maul, Arcan'dor, and Waters of the Well of Eternity collectively removed the immediate crisis. M'uru's proposed contribution offered another route toward restoring the Sunwell 821. |
Territories and Defenses
| Location | Importance |
|---|---|
| Silvermoon City | Capital of Quel'Thalas and location of the Sunstrider Court. Human reinforcements helped reclaim it after much of the city fell 178 211. |
| Isle of Quel'Danas | Site of the Sunwell and the dynasty's principal residence. Kael'thas later undertook to cleanse its plague and stabilize its disrupted ley lines 193 386. |
| Eversong Woods and the Ghostlands | Heartland and frontier defended by rangers, sanctums, gates, and runestones 178 187. |
| Eldre'Thalas / Dire Maul | Second city, shared with the incorporated Shen'dralar; its arena attracted competitors and spectators from numerous factions 275 677 678. |
| Demon Fall Canyon | Arcan'dor settlement intended to become the High Elves' third city 677. |
The Runestone Barrier distributed Sunwell energy through Quel'Thalas's runestones, gates, and natural features, including the Elrendar River. Its strength had previously protected the kingdom against Trolls and the Horde, but its interconnected design made Dar'Khan's reversal of its energy catastrophic 152 187 197.
Military and Equipment
Forces
| Force | Documented role |
|---|---|
| Rangers and Farstriders | Elite archers and swordsmen; became the kingdom's strongest surviving forces after the invasion 176 212. |
| Sunfury and Dawnblade legions | Major military formations nearly annihilated during the defense of Quel'Thalas 208 212. |
| Spellbreakers | Elite magical combatants; included among Anasterian's defenders and Quel'Thalas's arena team 208 653. |
| Dragonhawk Riders | Aerial personnel used for communication and represented in arena combat 192 653. |
| Arcane golems | Constructs comparable in combat power to Infernals; only a few hundred had been accumulated at Sunwell Plateau 208. |
Arms and Craftsmanship
- Enchanted equipment: Long-standing arcane research supported extensive stores of epic-grade gear. Ranger lords and high-ranking Archmages commonly possessed multiple epic weapons 176.
- Flamestrike: Anasterian's famous mage artifact, later inherited and reforged for Kael'thas 165 386.
- Quel'Delar and Quel'Serrar: Dragon-gifted sacred swords. Reforged together with phoenix and dragonfire, they gained the power of life and were entrusted to Liadrin 212 384.
- Thori'dal, Defender of Quel'Thalas: A weapon passed down through generations of Ranger-Generals; its runes could produce numerous kinds of magical arrows 178 564.
- Troll Stalker armor: An epic leather ranger set commemorating victory in the Troll Wars, personally enchanted by Anasterian and later given to Jiang Jie 223.
