Background / History

Prince of Lordaeron

Arthas was King Terenas’s son, Calia’s younger brother, and the first in line to Lordaeron’s throne. Terenas had entrusted him with administering the kingdom several years before the plague crisis. His popularity approached his father’s, and the soldiers were prepared to fight to the death for him 39 58 69.

Trained by Uther in the Holy Light and Muradin Bronzebeard in combat, Arthas became the Silver Hand’s youngest full member and youngest Grand Knight. Gavinrad was a notable dissenter among his admirers, questioning his devotion and suitability for the order 2 84 98 100.

Arthas brought Jiang Jie back from Andorhal. When a palace maid was poisoned after eating food shared with Jiang Jie, he cleansed the remaining toxin with holy magic. He then strengthened palace security and departed with Jaina for Hearthglen 2 4.

Stratholme and Frostmourne

Arthas purged Stratholme, leaving the city a ghost town and breaking with Uther and Jaina. He subsequently took Lordaeron’s fleets and elite troops north to pursue Mal’Ganis. Although Terenas was shaken by his son’s unauthorized actions, he defended the purge as a ruler’s responsibility to protect the greater population 30 50 57 58.

In a cavern in northeastern Dragonblight, Muradin read Frostmourne’s warning and urged Arthas to abandon it. Arthas knowingly accepted its curse, arguing that revenge and saving his people justified any cost. He discarded the Might of Menethil and offered everything he possessed to the spirits guarding the blade 84 362.

The sword’s ice prison shattered, striking down Muradin, while Frostmourne consumed Arthas’s soul and expelled his Holy Light. Muradin was initially believed dead, but was later revealed to have survived with amnesia among the Frostborn Dwarves. Arthas went on to kill the five thousand elite Lordaeron soldiers he had brought north 84 85 362 519.

Return to Lordaeron

Arthas sailed home with Falric and Marwyn, now Death Knights. Uther, Jaina, and Korth’azz intercepted his ships, exposing his transformation before he could return as a victorious prince. Arthas rejected Uther’s authority and proclaimed his intention to make Lordaeron an eternal kingdom under his rule 98 99 111.

After Jiang Jie’s Murlocs sank most of his fleet, Arthas reached Whispering Shore. There he revealed that he had killed and raised the captured Korth’azz. Uther, wielding the Silver Hand, overwhelmed Arthas in their ensuing battle, although the arrival of Naxxramas prevented an immediate allied victory 140 142 146 148.

Jiang Jie ultimately forced his withdrawal by threatening Invincible’s remains. Arthas left Tirisfal Glades with his forces, recovered the coffin from the North Sea, and resurrected his beloved horse as a skeletal death charger 150 152.

Unlike the history Jiang Jie remembered, Arthas did not return to the palace and personally murder Terenas. The king instead died after an unidentified person told him of Arthas’s corruption and attack on Lordaeron. Calia succeeded him as queen 111 162 163.

Quel’Thalas and Dalaran

Arthas led an army of one hundred thousand elite undead out of Stratholme, slaughtering Northpass Tower’s defenders and raising the fallen. He then advanced through Quel’Thalas with Kel’Thuzad, while Noth and Heigan established plague infrastructure behind them 174 177.

At the Eastern Sanctum, Arthas defeated Sylvanas and severed her leg, but Jiang Jie intervened before Frostmourne could kill her. He later used the Key of the Three Moons to reverse the Runestone Barrier’s energy, devastating Silvermoon and its defending mages 189 197.

Arthas froze a passage across the sea to Quel’Danas. In battle with Anasterian Sunstrider, he shattered Flamestrike and pierced the Sun King’s chest before Jiang Jie intervened. His subsequent ice wall failed to protect fifty thousand undead from the Sunwell’s explosion 200 205 211.

During the assault on Dalaran, Arthas joined Kel’Thuzad against Antonidas and killed the archmage. Frostmourne unexpectedly failed to capture Antonidas’s soul, while Kel’Thuzad seized the Greatstaff of Atiesh and the Book of Medivh 242.

The Frozen Throne

At Southshore, Arthas fought Old Chen to a stalemate before withdrawing when Dalaran’s reinforcements arrived. Soon afterward, he felt his power and control over the undead weakening as Ner’zhul’s strength drained away 343 353.

Arthas returned to Northrend with Kel’Thuzad, accepting Anub’arak’s guidance through Azjol-Nerub. Although he resisted Yogg-Saron’s attempts to dominate him, he accepted outside help because he doubted he could defeat the forces approaching the Frozen Throne 360 363 364.

At Icecrown Citadel, Ner’zhul transferred his remaining power to Arthas. He fought Illidan in Metamorphosis, survived Jiang Jie’s Phoenix Arrow, and retreated toward the Frozen Throne under cover of ice barriers 367 373 375.

The throne was destroyed before Arthas could merge with Ner’zhul. Anveena secretly recovered the Lich King’s armor, leaving Arthas without its mental amplification. He survived with Frostmourne and Ner’zhul’s transferred power, but the Scourge fragmented into competing factions 376 377.

Final Campaign and Defeat

Arthas continued rebuilding his forces, establishing the Acherus Death Knight Order. By the Northrend Expedition, Acherus was his sole flying fortress; Anub’arak had seized the others 610.

Jiang Jie later fought him on Sindragosa’s back, but could not finish him while Icecrown Glacier’s frost energy sustained him. When Arthas discovered Faol wearing the missing Lich King’s armor, he launched an assault to seize it, only to be intercepted by Uther and Old Mograine 619 664.

As King Thoradin took control of most of Icecrown’s undead, Arthas refused both flight and submission to Yogg-Saron. He chose a final duel with Jiang Jie, preferring to fall to the father of Calia’s child rather than an outsider. On learning that their unborn son would be named Thoradin Menethil, he acknowledged that his family’s bloodline would continue 674.

Jiang Jie defeated him and broke Frostmourne. The imprisoned souls poured into Arthas, who accepted their punishment and welcomed release 674.

Appearance

  • As a Paladin: Handsome, imposing, and bearing a leader’s presence; wore exquisite Paladin armor and carried the Might of Menethil amid surging Holy Light 4.
  • As a Death Knight: Entirely white hair, cold eyes, gray-black armor, and a matching hooded cloak; carried Frostmourne on his back 98.
  • After Ner’zhul’s empowerment: Ice-blue eyes and deepened frost markings; his existing armor became frost armor formed from steel and ice 367.

Personality

Arthas’s determination could become extreme stubbornness. Calia observed that once he decided on a course, even Terenas could not dissuade him. His authority, popularity, and upbringing reinforced his conviction that he had the right to decide Lordaeron’s future 39 99.

His initial desire to protect his people became inseparable from revenge. At Frostmourne’s altar, he recognized the blade’s evil but accepted it anyway, interpreting Muradin’s apparent death as a necessary sacrifice. Gavinrad’s earlier judgment—that he was spoiled, emotionally fragile, indecisive, and insufficiently devout—contrasted sharply with his public reputation 84 98.

Corruption did not immediately erase his remaining goodness. Part of his soul remained imprisoned within Frostmourne, and he experienced conflict over his actions and lack of freedom. His attachment to Invincible remained strong enough for Jiang Jie to exploit 98 140 150.

Arthas also possessed considerable willpower and ambition. He resisted Yogg-Saron’s whispers and resented subordination even while dependent on greater powers. At the end, his pride as a Menethil outweighed survival: he refused to flee or become the Old God’s servant 152 363 674.

Abilities & Skills

Paladin Training

Arthas originally wielded the Holy Light under Uther’s instruction 4 98.

  • Cleansed poison from a palace maid after Jiang Jie removed most of the toxin 4.
  • Advanced rapidly with Uther’s guidance and the blessed Might of Menethil 100.
  • Lost all Holy Light energy when he claimed Frostmourne 84.

Frost Manipulation

Through Frostmourne, Arthas drew upon the bitter cold of Northrend 200 205.

  • Froze breaches in a damaged ship to stop it sinking 140.
  • Created a sea crossing more than a kilometer wide and dozens of kilometers long, strong enough to support the Scourge 200.
  • Directed freezing ice toward Jiang Jie beneath the sea 205.
  • Created enormous defensive ice walls, though these could not withstand the Sunwell’s explosion 211.
  • Became especially difficult to kill on Icecrown Glacier, where immense frost energy sustained him despite physical wounds 619.

Necromancy and Undead Command

Frostmourne allowed Arthas to raise slain creatures and enslave their souls, including powerful professionals and dragons 127.

  • Personally raised Falric, Korth’azz, and Sapphiron; Sapphiron retained his arcane power and became stronger after death 98 142 362.
  • Directly controlled powerful undead, then used them and subordinate necromancers to command a much larger army 617.
  • Could preserve his hold over undead directly bound to himself and Frostmourne even against the new Lich King’s control 674.
  • Directly controlled approximately one hundred thousand undead near the end; most remaining forces depended on intermediary commanders and could be taken from him 674.

Soul Absorption and Frostmourne Bond

Arthas surrendered part of his soul to Frostmourne and became inseparable from the weapon’s power 98 619.

  • Gained strength from the souls Frostmourne absorbed, imprisoned, and devoured 189 619.
  • Drew on accumulated soul power without needing to individually digest each soul 619.
  • Initially lacked the power to master the sword, allowing Ner’zhul to control him through it 150.
  • Never acquired the Lich King’s armor or completed the intended merger with Ner’zhul 376 377.

Anti-Magic Shell

Arthas maintained an Anti-Magic Shell while fighting Illidan 373.

  • Effectively resisted spells below Legendary level and weakened Legendary spells 373.
  • Was penetrated by Jiang Jie’s arcanite-tipped Phoenix Arrow, empowered with arcane energy, Phoenix Flames, and the Moon Goddess’s power 373.

Limits and Vulnerabilities

  • Borrowed power: Despite the enormous energy he could command, his intrinsic strength was described in the final battle as only ordinary Legendary. He could not fully exploit the demigod-level frost power available to him 674.
  • Dependence on Frostmourne: Jiang Jie identified destroying the sword, overwhelming Arthas’s soul, or stripping away his sustaining frost and death energy as ways to kill him 619.
  • Lack of flight: Arthas could not personally pursue a flying Jiang Jie and relied on aerial troops or allies to counter him 342.
  • Artifact-armed opponents: Early after his transformation, Uther with the Silver Hand decisively surpassed him; Icecrown’s later environmental advantage reversed their matchup 146 664.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Calia Menethil — Elder sister and successor to Lordaeron’s throne. Her unborn son’s continuation of the Menethil line brought Arthas a measure of reassurance before his final duel 163 674.
  • Jaina Proudmoore — Lover before his fall. She rejected his transformation, though he continued addressing her as his beloved after becoming a Death Knight 39 84 98 142.
  • Uther the Lightbringer — Paladin mentor who sponsored his Silver Hand membership; later a determined opponent seeking to purify his fallen student 98 143 664.
  • Muradin Bronzebeard — Combat mentor and companion in the search for Frostmourne. Tried to prevent Arthas from taking the sword and survived its shattering ice prison with amnesia 84 519.
  • Ner’zhul — Master and controller through Frostmourne. Transferred his remaining power to Arthas, but their intended merger was prevented 150 367 376.

  • Tichondrius — Distrusted ally who supported his return to Lordaeron. Their cooperation was marked by mockery, concealed hostility, and competing interests 140 152 177.
  • Falric and Marwyn — Loyal adjutants who continued serving him as Death Knights 98 142.
  • Jiang Jie / Nicholas Jiang — Initially rescued by Arthas, later his recurring enemy and final opponent. Broke Frostmourne after revealing that he and Calia were expecting a Menethil heir 2 150 674.
  • Yogg-Saron — Offered aid and repeatedly sought his submission. Arthas accepted a tactical alliance with the Old God’s servants but ultimately refused complete surrender 363 364 367 674.
