Background / History
Sheltered upbringing
Yin Qingyan was the only daughter of Yin Fangchuan and the maternal granddaughter of Yin Yuanya. Her mother took a husband into the Yin family, while her aunt, Yin Qiqi, married Ji Clan leader Ji Chengxuan. Qingyan grew up in her aunt’s household and addressed Ji Hanchu as her third cousin 5.
The Yin family doted on her, ordinarily assigning numerous guards to protect her. Raised largely in seclusion, she was told from childhood that she would eventually marry Ji Hanchu. His courtesy led her to believe she held a special place in his affections 5 9.
First encounter with Red Adornment
After hearing that Ji Hanchu had arrived at Fishing Slumber Cottage, Qingyan hurried to see him and discovered Red Adornment beside him and a mutilated corpse nearby. Red Adornment seized her, held Crescent Moon against her throat and cheek, and questioned her about her feelings for Ji Hanchu 5.
When Red Adornment threatened to kill her, Ji Hanchu created an opening and pulled the attacker away. Xie Liyou shielded Qingyan, who fainted from fright 5.
Captivity and rejection
Qingyan later confronted Red Adornment for harming her grandfather and threatening her mother. Armed with Qi Jin’s saber but lacking martial training, she attacked unsuccessfully. Red Adornment subdued the group and kept Qingyan captive to draw out Yin Fangchuan, who failed to appear despite several days of waiting 9.
Convinced by her mother’s claim that Ji Hanchu had been bewitched with gu, Qingyan privately begged Red Adornment to release him. Red Adornment instead sealed her acupoints and concealed her in a wardrobe, forcing her to witness Ji Hanchu’s willing affection. When Qingyan appealed to him directly, he apologized but chose Red Adornment 9.
Red Adornment subsequently released her before leaving to pursue Yin Fangchuan 10.
The proposed marriage and poisoning
After Yin Fangchuan’s death and Red Adornment’s apparent death, Qingyan still wished to marry Ji Hanchu. Qi Jin concealed Ji Hanchu’s involvement in protecting Red Adornment, allowing Qingyan to believe he had been innocent and controlled by gu. He offered to free the imprisoned Ji Zhiyuan in exchange for help arranging the marriage 11.
Following his memory loss, Ji Hanchu believed Qingyan was his fiancée. When he disappeared, she left a letter and went looking for him; Qi Jin found her and reluctantly agreed to accompany her search 11 13.
Discovering Red Adornment alive, Qingyan tackled and strangled her until Ji Hanchu intervened. Red Adornment poisoned Qingyan in retaliation, leaving her with recurring attacks of unbearable pain. Qi Jin sought a remedy and received one that could relieve the poison while damaging her mind; Red Adornment tempted him with the prospect of a Qingyan who recognized only him 13.
Marriage and impaired memory
Qi Jin chose the mind-damaging medicine. Qingyan subsequently married him and bore their daughter, Qi Yinyin, while living with severely impaired recognition and memory. She often mistook her husband for Ji Hanchu and called her daughter “Ji Yin” 16.
For roughly fifteen years, Qi Jin maintained a comfortable household and cared for her devotedly. Qingyan’s awareness fluctuated: sometimes she recognized him as Qi Jin, while at other times she believed he was the cousin she had loved. She later acknowledged that she understood how much he had sacrificed for her 16.
Final confrontation and death
At There Is an Inn, Qi Yinyin defended Qingyan from men harassing them. After Ji Qingrang intervened at Red Adornment’s request, Red Adornment approached Qingyan privately and revealed that Qi Jin had supplied information enabling Yin Fangchuan’s killing. She also confronted Qingyan about the medicine and questioned whether her apparent madness still concealed moments of lucidity 16.
Back at the Qi residence, Qingyan recognized her daughter, embraced her, and asked to speak with Qi Jin alone. When he returned, she confronted him about Red Adornment and his betrayal. Unable to forgive him but unable to bear leaving him either, she stabbed him with his saber, then used the same blade to take her own life beside him 16.
Appearance
- Youthful features: A fresh, lovely face with particularly delicate brows and eyes, black hair, and fair cheeks 5.
- Early clothing: Wears a blue-green tunic and white robe when she first appears, an outfit noted to complement Ji Hanchu’s clothing 5.
- Later appearance: Remains beautiful and comparatively youthful past thirty, having been sheltered from material hardship by Qi Jin 16.
- During her illness: Often has a vacant gaze, mutters indistinctly, and curls up trembling when frightened 16.
Personality
Qingyan is affectionate, sheltered, and easily frightened, but accustomed to having others protect her. When threatened or humiliated, she repeatedly turns to Qi Jin to defend her. Her dependence does not prevent impulsive action: jealousy and fear for her family drive her to confront Red Adornment despite knowing how dangerous she is 5 9 13.
Her childhood attachment to Ji Hanchu makes rejection especially difficult to accept. Rather than believe he willingly loves Red Adornment, she clings to the explanation that he has been bewitched. Her family’s concealment of its darker affairs reinforces that belief 9 11.
In her final lucid moments, Qingyan recognizes both Qi Jin’s devotion and the harm he inflicted on her. Her tenderness toward her daughter and anguish over killing her husband reveal attachments that persist beyond her earlier fixation on Ji Hanchu 16.
Abilities & Skills
Martial limitations
Qingyan is explicitly described as having no martial arts training 9.
- Her attack with Qi Jin’s saber is unsteady and without technique; Red Adornment evades it easily 9.
- She later overpowers an injured, weakened Red Adornment through a sudden physical assault, nearly strangling her before Ji Hanchu intervenes 13.
Relationships
- Yin Fangchuan — Mother. Encourages Qingyan’s intended marriage to Ji Hanchu and tells her that Red Adornment has bewitched him. Her death becomes a central cause of Qingyan’s hatred 5 9 11.
- Yin Yuanya — Maternal grandfather. Qingyan blames Red Adornment for his death, although Kaiyang delivers the fatal blow 5 10 13.
- Yin Qiqi — Maternal aunt, in whose household Qingyan grows up. She asks Ji Chengxuan to raise the marriage proposal with Ji Hanchu, who refuses 5 11.
- Ji Hanchu — Her “third cousin” and childhood love. He protects her from immediate harm but does not reciprocate her feelings; after losing his memories, he believes she is his fiancée 5 9 11.
- Qi Jin — Protector, later husband, and father of her daughter. His devotion leads him both to serve her wishes and to manipulate her life, including facilitating her mother’s death and administering the medicine that impairs her mind 10 11 16.
- Red Adornment — Captor, romantic rival, and her mother’s killer. Their conflict culminates in Qingyan’s poisoning; their reunion years later exposes Qi Jin’s betrayals 9 13 16.
- Qi Yinyin — Daughter. Protects Qingyan during her illness and initially regards Qi Jin as a devoted husband. Before her death, Qingyan recognizes Yinyin by name and calls her her pride and treasure 16.
