Background
Red Adornment lost both parents while fleeing a devastating famine. As a small child, she narrowly escaped being eaten when Hongxiu rescued her. Hongxiu offered her a home and the opportunity to become Yaoguang, changing the course of her life 4 11.
Raised in Seven Stars Valley, she regarded Hongxiu as both her senior sister and family. Hongxiu could not succeed as Yaoguang because she had cultivated a dead body, and hoped Red Adornment would take the position instead. Red Adornment willingly accepted that expectation out of gratitude, although the valley’s rules forbade each generation’s stars from marrying or having children 5 11.
Her vendetta against the Yin Clan grew from learning what had happened to Hongxiu and her infant daughter. The child had been buried alive on a snowy mountain, while Hongxiu had suffered assault and torture and become a puppet sustained by Living Dead Gu. Red Adornment volunteered to travel to the Central Plains and avenge them 4 5 7 11.
Appearance
- Build and features: Petite and slender, with fair skin and striking eyes described as both catlike and foxlike. The outer corners of her eyes tilt upward, and her smiling eyes curve into crescents 4 5 13.
- Hair: Long, dark hair, sometimes worn loose and lightly tied with a ribbon rather than arranged in Jiangnan-style buns 3.
- Clothing: Frequently wears red, but also appears in a blue-black dress embroidered with silver thread. Her Southern Frontier clothing leaves her midriff and parts of her legs exposed 5 6 12.
- Accessories: Red or purplish-red footwear and a silver anklet engraved with snakes 3 6.
- Injuries: During her recovery, a dark palm print remains on her shoulder for more than half a month after Ji Chengxuan strikes her 4 11.
Personality
Red Adornment is brazen, mischievous, and fiercely protective of her freedom. She enjoys unsettling people constrained by Central Plains etiquette, especially Ji Hanchu, whom she repeatedly calls her “little stick-in-the-mud.” She exploits his assumptions, stages displays of helplessness, and uses flirtation to challenge his self-restraint 4 5 6.
Her cruelty is deliberate rather than indiscriminate. She tortures those responsible for Hongxiu’s suffering and initially intends to destroy the Yin household, but follows Hongxiu’s insistence that innocent people be spared. Although she sometimes claims to enjoy killing, the narration explicitly distinguishes her vengeance from a love of slaughter 4 7.
Affection exposes a much softer side of her. In Hongxiu’s presence, she readily seeks comfort and cries like a child. With Ji Hanchu, teasing gradually gives way to genuine attachment, jealousy, and fear of abandonment. She repeatedly tries to leave him, yet returns despite the danger and eventually chooses a life incompatible with becoming Yaoguang 9 11 12 14.
Abilities & Skills
Whip Combat
Her strongest martial specialty is the whip; the narration describes her other weapon skills as markedly uneven 7.
- Uses the barbed Bone-Setting Whip for direct attacks, intimidation, and torture 4 5.
- Can launch forceful, killing attacks at an opponent’s heart 4 5.
- Later uses the whip to drive an unwanted admirer away from Ji Hanchu 20.
Poisoncraft
Red Adornment uses poisons for assassination, incapacitation, retaliation, and leverage. She also produces a new poison during her confrontation with Yin Qingyan 4 9 13.
| Poison / Preparation | Documented use or effect |
|---|---|
| Soft-Bone Powder | Weakens or restricts movement and martial ability; used against Ji Hanchu and Xie Liyou 4 6 11. |
| Non-Action | Causes unbearable itching that worsens with the smell of blood, potentially driving victims to scratch themselves to death 5. |
| Rebirth | A lethal poison Yin Yuanya survives through treatment. Red Adornment investigates its antidote and later scatters Rebirth around her home to deter visitors 4 20. |
| Poisoned blade coating | Leaves Ji Chengxuan unable to use his martial arts for several hours; movement intensifies the pain 4. |
| Internal-energy-sealing poison | Disables Qi Jin and Xie Liyou before they can effectively oppose her 9. |
| Remedy for Yin Qingyan | Offered as a cure for her poison, but capable of damaging her mind and leaving her with a child’s mentality 13 14. |
- Can identify a distinctive ingredient-like fragrance in medicinal broth, but cannot fully assess the Rebirth antidote without testing it against the poison 4.
- Her poisons are not infallible: Ji Hanchu neutralizes Non-Action and explains that his childhood exposure to medicinal substances has given him extensive poison immunity 5 10.
Venomous Insects and Gu
- Keeps venomous insects inside hollow prayer beads and directs them with whistles 7.
- Poisons Qi Jin’s leg with insects, then tells him to let blood daily for half a month 7.
- Releases venomous creatures against the death warriors during Ji Zhiyuan’s ambush 11.
- Knows of puppet-making gu, but Tianshu rejects her request for one that would preserve a person’s awareness while making him willingly obey her 7.
Lightness Skill and Internal Energy
- Moves across rooftops and slips past the Yin Clan’s guards without being clearly seen 4.
- Uses internal energy to project her voice and to throw a saddle nail hard enough to deflect an incoming blade 3 5.
- Catches a disciple’s sword between two fingers and shatters it 5.
- Considers escape one of her strongest skills, but cannot reliably evade Ji Jingsheng’s superior saber technique 9.
Twin Gu and Survival
The Twin Gu preserves her life after catastrophic crossbow wounds and a fall into a ravine. Tianshu brings her back to Seven Stars Valley and painstakingly repairs her shattered body while she lies in an ice-jade coffin for nearly a year 11.
- Survival does not restore her immediately: she emerges with severe internal injuries and an almost undetectable heart pulse 11.
- The Twin Gu cannot remain separated by too great a distance, prompting Hongxiu and Little Mute to follow her after she leaves the Southern Frontier 12.
- During recovery, her weakened body leaves her vulnerable even to accidental force and Yin Qingyan’s physical attack 11 13.
Other Skills and Limits
- Hidden weapons: Carries poisoned nails and can accurately strike small moving targets with pebbles 4 5.
- Archery: Explicitly described as poor, despite her use of arrows to kill Yin Sanping 7.
- Saber technique: Inferior to her whip skills and insufficient against opponents such as Ji Jingsheng 7 9.
- Private sign language: Shares a system of gestures with Little Mute, developed in childhood to communicate secretly and evade their elders’ supervision 12.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Bone-Setting Whip — Her principal weapon, fitted with barbs and carried coiled at her waist 4 7.

- Kaiyang — Martial uncle and bearer of the matching Hooked Moon Scimitar. He later tests Ji Hanchu’s saber skills and brings news of Hongxiu’s journey 4 12.
- Little Mute — Childhood companion with whom she shares a private sign language. Their easy intimacy makes Ji Hanchu jealous 12.
- Ji Chengxuan — Hongxiu’s former lover and an adversary seeking her whereabouts. Red Adornment condemns his failure to protect Hongxiu and refuses to relieve his uncertainty about his lost daughter; she is not that daughter 4 11 15.
- Ji Zhiyuan — Enemy responsible for the ambush and crossbow attack that nearly kill her 11 15.
- Yin Qingyan — Romantic rival and repeated antagonist, nicknamed the “little white rabbit.” Their conflict escalates from threats and captivity to attempted strangulation, poisoning, and a later confrontation over Qi Jin’s betrayal 5 9 13 16.
- Qi Jin — Enemy whose devotion to Yin Qingyan gives Red Adornment leverage over him. He reveals Ji Zhiyuan’s role in Ji Hanchu’s memory loss and had supplied information enabling Yin Fangchuan’s killing 13 14.
- Liu Xinlü — Acquaintance at There Is an Inn. Red Adornment protects her from an attack and later borrows her bridal veil for her wedding 3 11.
- Ji Qingrang and Ji Qingxi — Her son and daughter. Conceiving was difficult, and their birth nearly cost her life 16.
