Appearance
- Plain features: His face is notably unremarkable, especially beside Ji Hanchu 7 16.
- Reserved expression: Usually expressionless or unsmiling, with a cold, stern bearing 7 10 13.
- Blue-and-white robes: Red Adornment interprets his clothing as an unsuccessful attempt to imitate Ji Hanchu 7.
- Later years: Develops white hair at his temples and wrinkles around his eyes, while Yin Qingyan remains comparatively youthful under his care 16.
Personality
Qi Jin is proud, quick-tempered, and vindictive. He lashes out at Xie Liyou when challenged and repeatedly attacks Red Adornment despite being outmatched. His ruthlessness extends beyond personal quarrels: after seizing control of the Ji Clan with Ji Zhiyuan, he advocates killing the remaining prisoners to eliminate future resistance 7 9 10 13.
His devotion to Yin Qingyan overrides both self-preservation and loyalty. He is willing to die for her, submit to humiliation for an antidote, or arrange her marriage to Ji Hanchu if that is what she wants. Nevertheless, his insistence that he seeks only her happiness conceals possessiveness: he helps remove her mother as an obstacle and ultimately accepts a means of making Yin Qingyan dependent on him 10 11 13 14 16.
He is not entirely without conscience. He initially recoils from Ji Zhiyuan’s plan against Xie Liyou and later recognizes that his unattainable desire has destroyed sincere friendships. That awareness does not stop him from continuing down the same path 11 13.
Abilities & Skills
Commerce and Financial Management
Qi Jin’s strongest talent is financial rather than martial. Self-taught in commerce and calculation, he earns a reputation as a “living God of Wealth” 7.
- Controls funding within the Ji Clan; Xie Liyou complains about deductions from the Second Gate’s allocation 15.
- Spends a fortune bribing covert agents to consolidate his and Ji Zhiyuan’s control of the clan 13.
- Continues handling money-house business after losing his standing in the martial world, using his wealth to maintain Yin Qingyan’s comfortable household 16.
Saber Combat
His saber style relies on cunning attacks aimed at vital points, with little mercy or allowance for retreat 10.
- Trains diligently but never achieves mastery of saber techniques 7.
- Can turn his blade aside to strike with its back when attempting to force someone away rather than kill them 7.
- Is decisively inferior to Ji Hanchu, who repeatedly disarms, repels, or subdues him 7 9 13.
- Cannot land a blow on Red Adornment during their confrontation outside the inn 10.
Intrigue and Intelligence
- Uses hidden agents to track Ji Hanchu’s movements south 13.
- Leaks Yin Fangchuan’s whereabouts to Red Adornment, seeking to have her killed without openly implicating himself 10 14.
- Personally administers the memory-erasing drug to Ji Hanchu on Ji Zhiyuan’s orders 13.
- Combines bribery with Ji Zhiyuan’s coercion and deception to suppress opposition within the Ji Clan 12 13.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Long saber — His principal weapon. Yin Qingyan borrows it to attack Red Adornment, and later uses the same saber to kill Qi Jin before taking her own life 9 16.
- Mind-damaging remedy — Given to him by Red Adornment to cure Yin Qingyan’s poison at the cost of reducing her mental faculties to those of a young child 13.
- Ji Hanchu’s antidote pouch — Contains a genuine antidote for Yin Qingyan, giving Qi Jin an alternative to Red Adornment’s harmful remedy 14.
History
Childhood and Service to the Ji Clan
Qi Jin grows up alongside Ji Hanchu and Xie Liyou. When the eight-year-old Ji Hanchu nearly poisons Xie Liyou through a medical mistake, Qi Jin has already calculated the cost of a coffin before Xie Liyou recovers. The three once share genuine friendship 5 13.
By his first appearance in person, Qi Jin commands the Fifth Gate and serves as Ji Zhiyuan’s ally. His attachment to Yin Qingyan is the foundation of that alliance: Ji Zhiyuan understands that Qi Jin follows him because he is her cousin, not out of personal loyalty 7 11.
Conflict with Red Adornment
At the Ji estate, Qi Jin attempts to attack Red Adornment on Ji Zhiyuan’s behalf, but Ji Hanchu intervenes. Even after Ji Zhiyuan agrees to release her, Qi Jin wants her dead to protect Yin Qingyan’s hopes of marrying Ji Hanchu. Red Adornment retaliates with venomous insects, poisoning his leg. At Ji Hanchu’s insistence, she withdraws them and tells Qi Jin that daily bloodletting will allow him to recover in half a month 7.
Qi Jin later brings Yin Qingyan to Ji Hanchu. Red Adornment suppresses his internal energy with poison, leaving his attempts to defend Yin Qingyan ineffective; Ji Hanchu confiscates his saber 9.
When Red Adornment leaves the inn, Qi Jin confronts her again. Believing her claim that Yin Qingyan needs an antidote, he immediately attempts to stab himself when she offers a cure in exchange for his life. Red Adornment knocks his saber away and reveals that the supposed aphrodisiac poisoning was a lie 10.
During the same encounter, he tells Red Adornment that Ji Hanchu has secretly killed Yin Clan assassins to protect her and now faces punishment. He also reveals that Yin Fangchuan is alone with weakened defenses. Red Adornment recognizes his concealed purpose: Yin Fangchuan opposes him as a prospective husband, so he wants Red Adornment to remove her. His involvement in her death later becomes decisive to his own fate 10 14 16.
Releasing Ji Zhiyuan and Seizing the Clan
A year after the ambush that nearly kills Ji Hanchu and Red Adornment, Qi Jin visits the imprisoned Ji Zhiyuan. He offers freedom in exchange for help arranging Yin Qingyan’s marriage to Ji Hanchu. Ji Chengxuan already distrusts him because of his association with Ji Zhiyuan 11.
Ji Zhiyuan demands action against Xie Liyou and proposes erasing Ji Hanchu’s memories. Qi Jin initially objects to harming his old acquaintance, but continues negotiating and releases Ji Zhiyuan. He later admits that he personally drugged Ji Hanchu 11 13.
The pair ally with Yin Clan death warriors, buy off covert agents, and slaughter nearly half the Ji household while crushing dissent. After their takeover, Qi Jin urges a complete purge of the prisoners, including Ji Jingsheng; Ji Zhiyuan refuses to go that far 12 13.
The Choice of Antidote
When Yin Qingyan leaves to find Ji Hanchu, Qi Jin follows and eventually agrees to help her search. His agents lead them south, where they discover Ji Hanchu traveling with the surviving Red Adornment 13.
After Yin Qingyan attacks Red Adornment and is poisoned in retaliation, Qi Jin strikes Red Adornment across the face. Ji Hanchu immediately beats him back and warns him never to touch her again. Qi Jin subsequently kneels before Red Adornment, endures her blows, and confesses the circumstances of Ji Hanchu’s memory loss in exchange for help 13.
Red Adornment gives him a remedy that will cure Yin Qingyan’s poison but damage her mind, tempting him with the prospect of a woman whose world contains only him. Before he leaves with the unconscious Yin Qingyan, Ji Hanchu also supplies a genuine antidote. Although the administration is not shown directly, Yin Qingyan’s later condition and the account of her fate establish that Qi Jin turned her into a mentally impaired dependent 13 14 16.
Marriage and Death
Qi Jin marries Yin Qingyan, and they have a daughter, Qi Yinyin. For more than a decade, he shelters his wife in material comfort despite losing his standing in the martial world. Yin Qingyan sometimes recognizes him but often mistakes him for Ji Hanchu, calling their daughter “Ji Yin” 16.
Fifteen years later, Red Adornment tells Yin Qingyan about Qi Jin’s role in her mother’s death. Yin Qingyan regains her memories and sends their daughter away before confronting him. She stabs him with his own saber; he does not resist and tries to wipe away her tears. His final words are, “It’s all right” 16.
Unable to forgive him but unwilling to live without him, Yin Qingyan pulls out the saber and kills herself beside his body 16.
