Background
Ji Hanchu’s father taught him medicine, martial arts, and the family precept: “Purify your heart and understand propriety; restrain yourself and uphold discipline.” His childhood medical training included exposure to numerous medicinal substances and poisons, which developed his exceptional resistance to poisoning 5 10.
After his father’s death, his third uncle, Ji Chengxuan, raised him, while his second uncle, Ji Jingsheng, continued his martial training. Xie Liyou, his father’s adopted son and Ji Hanchu’s sworn elder brother, grew up alongside him. Within the Ji family, Ji Hanchu was particularly close to Ji Jingsheng and Xie Liyou 5 6 10 15.
He became master of the Third Gate, the pharmacological branch of the Ji Clan’s Five Gates. His medical work earned him the title Little Medical Immortal, but he avoided seeking a martial reputation, following his father’s teaching that martial arts should serve others rather than win empty fame 3 4 5.
Appearance
- Features: Refined and handsome, with dark, bright eyes and dark hair 5 7 14 15.
- Clothing: Frequently wears blue outer robes over white clothing 5 8.
- Hands: Described as beautiful and scholar-like, despite his considerable martial strength 6.
- Bearing: Maintains an upright posture and restrained, gentlemanly manner; his composure is repeatedly compared to jade or the clear moon 3 4 5.
- Family resemblance: Hongxiu remarks that he looks very much like his father 12.
- Scars: Retains the marks of the lashes inflicted before his attempted escape from the Ji Clan 11.
Personality
Ji Hanchu is courteous, compassionate, and unusually strict with himself. He initially trusts the Ji Clan’s reputation and takes offense when Red Adornment insults it. His manners remain controlled even while he is bound, drugged, and provoked; he struggles to answer her teasing with anything stronger than a demand for propriety 3.
His kindness is sincere rather than transactional. Believing Red Adornment to be a mistreated maid, he offers her protection and rejects her suggestion that she repay him through personal service. As a physician, he repeatedly treats people she poisons, even when doing so places him directly against her plans 4 5.
His love for Red Adornment exposes a conflict between his inherited principles and his own judgment. At first, he hopes to reconcile her grievances with accepted justice. As he learns more about the Ji and Yin families, he becomes increasingly unable to equate respectable standing with righteousness. His eventual willingness to leave the clan does not erase his guilt over those he leaves behind 5 6 10 15.
Although usually reserved, he becomes shy, jealous, and emotionally direct around Red Adornment. Even without his memories, he is drawn to her again and resents being measured against the version of himself she remembers 4 7 12.
Abilities & Skills
Medicine and Pharmacology
- Oversees the Third Gate’s pharmacological work and has extensive experience treating poisoning 3 4.
- Uses medicinal herbs, acupuncture, and the sealing of acupoints to counter Red Adornment’s poisons 5.
- Identifies drugs by their properties and recognizes that a supposed antidote would instead strengthen the effects of her specially prepared Bone-Softening Powder 10 11.
- Nurses Red Adornment through her severe internal injuries, brewing tonics and refusing to let her travel before her condition improves 12.
- Saves Red Adornment’s second senior brother after the latter deliberately drinks poison to test him; the treatment takes six hours 20.
- His skill has limits: he cannot save the mutilated and poisoned Xie Liyou when they find him in the Ji family dungeon 14.
Poison Resistance
- Attributes his resistance to his father testing many medicinal substances on him from childhood 10.
- Describes himself as immune to every poison, though he acknowledges that a potent stupefying drug can still weaken his limbs slightly 10.
- Sometimes pretends to be affected by Red Adornment’s drugs, a deception Xie Liyou recognizes 6.
- His resistance is not absolute in practice: Red Adornment’s specially prepared Bone-Softening Powder impairs him, and Qi Jin later admits administering the drugs responsible for his memory loss 3 11 13.
Martial Arts
- Trained first by his father and later by Ji Jingsheng 5.
- Uses powerful, direct saber techniques emphasizing overwhelming force rather than ornamentation; Red Adornment also notes the unpredictability of his techniques 5 10.
- Wields strong internal energy through Star Pendant, allowing him to restrain Red Adornment’s whip during their duel 5.
- Intercepts Kaiyang’s surprise attack left-handed while holding a medicine bowl in his right hand. Kaiyang subsequently judges his saber technique superior to Ji Jingsheng’s and offers to accept him as a disciple 12.
- Claims he can defeat Ji Chengxuan if he uses his full strength; Kaiyang accepts the claim after testing him, but a full duel between the two is not shown 12.
- Overpowers Qi Jin with a short sequence of strikes aimed at painful pressure points 13.
- Defeats Kaiyang’s disciple when challenged in Seven Stars Valley 20.
Precision and Perception
- Retains exceptional hearing even while drugged, detecting faint running water and approaching footsteps 3.
- Hears an approaching person during his fight with Red Adornment before she notices them 5.
- Incapacitates an abduction plotter with a thrown chopstick, catches another man’s sword between his fingers, and breaks its blade with controlled force 12.
Equipment & Items
- Star Pendant — His signature weapon, outwardly a jade-ribbed fan. Its black fan leaf conceals sharp projecting ribs and a bladed edge; he uses it to block weapons, entangle Red Adornment’s whip, and wound Ji Zhiyuan 5 15.
- Medicine pouch — Carries herbs used in emergency treatment. He also uses its fragrance to steady himself after being drugged 5.
- Jade bangle — The only keepsake left to him by his father. It becomes a deeply personal token between him and Red Adornment, passing between them during their courtship and reconciliations 6 8 14.
- Embroidered brocade pouch — Given to him by Red Adornment and decorated with mandarin ducks playing in water. Ji Chengxuan later recognizes its connection to Hongxiu 6 10.
- Gold leaves — Given to him by Xie Liyou to support his departure from the Ji Clan 11 14.
- Crescent Moon — Uses it to end Xie Liyou’s suffering at his request; the weapon cuts through iron with ease 14.
Story Role / Major Arcs
First Courtship and the Yin Clan Vendetta
In the earlier events recounted from Chapter 4 onward, Ji Hanchu meets Red Adornment while treating a poisoning in the Yin household. Mistaking her for Yin Yuanya’s bedchamber maid, he offers to take her into the Third Branch under his protection. His attraction survives the discovery that she is killing Yin disciples, but he initially insists that she return with him to answer for those deaths 4 5.
Their relationship develops through repeated clashes over her revenge. He refuses both Ji Chengxuan’s proposed marriage to Yin Qingyan and the prospect of succeeding him as clan head. Despite his belief that marrying Red Adornment would betray his family obligations, he protects her, becomes her lover, and urges her to return to the Southern Frontier alive 6 7 8.
When Ji Jingsheng attacks her at Ji Zhiyuan’s request, Ji Hanchu takes the blow intended for her. He later openly chooses her over Yin Qingyan and secretly kills Yin assassins sent after her 9 10.
Departure, Marriage, and Ambush
Ji Hanchu accepts punishment for aiding Red Adornment but refuses to surrender her. The detailed account records eighty-two lashes. With Xie Liyou’s help, he leaves the clan and returns to There Is an Inn, where Red Adornment puts on Liu Xinlü’s bridal veil and declares them husband and wife 10 11.
Ji Zhiyuan then sends death warriors armed with eagle crossbows after them. Ji Hanchu suffers two crossbow wounds and a sword thrust through his shoulder blade, while Red Adornment is shot into a ravine and presumed dead 11.
Memory Loss and Second Courtship
The opening abduction takes place after this separation. Ji Hanchu remembers his family and friends but no longer recognizes Red Adornment. She takes him away, insists that they are married, and accuses the Ji and Yin families of drugging him. The later account identifies two years of missing memories 3 11.
While traveling with her, he cares for her injuries and falls in love with her again. Familiar exchanges and dreams gradually revive fragments of their shared past. Although he initially believes Yin Qingyan to be his fiancée, he promises to break off the engagement 11 12.
Qi Jin eventually confesses that he drugged Ji Hanchu on Ji Zhiyuan’s orders. After another quarrel and reconciliation, Ji Hanchu again asks Red Adornment to take him with her, choosing their relationship without waiting for every memory to return 13 14.
Xie Liyou’s Death and the Final Family Confrontation
Returning to the Ji estate, Ji Hanchu finds Xie Liyou mutilated, chained, and beyond saving. At his brother’s plea, he kills him with Crescent Moon. He and Red Adornment cremate the body, gather the ashes, and confront Ji Zhiyuan 14 15.
Ji Zhiyuan admits responsibility for both Xie Liyou’s torture and the earlier ambush. Ji Hanchu wounds him and prepares to kill him, but Ji Chengxuan kneels to beg for his son’s life, offers his own life, and severs his left arm as payment. Unable to kill the uncle who raised him, Ji Hanchu relinquishes his vengeance and leaves with Red Adornment, finally severing his ties to the Ji family 15.
He then asks Hongxiu to transfer the male Twin Gu into his body so that he can share Red Adornment’s life and death. He accepts the stated consequences: sensitivity to sunlight, restrictions on how far the paired hosts can separate, and death for both hosts if either gu dies. The passage records his request and consent, not the completed procedure 15.
Later Life
Ji Hanchu and Red Adornment later return to Jiangnan with their children, Ji Qingrang and Ji Qingxi. Discussion of the fallen Gusu Ji Clan still distresses him. Red Adornment recognizes that his grief—whether over Xie Liyou, sparing Ji Zhiyuan, or losing his former home—has never entirely disappeared 16.
In Seven Stars Valley, he withstands the attention and challenges of Red Adornment’s fellow disciples. During a quiet rooftop conversation, he reveals that all his memories have returned and recalls falling in love with her twice 20.
Relationships
- Red Adornment — Wife and the only woman he says he has ever loved. Their central conflict concerns her revenge and his sense of righteousness; he chooses her both before and after losing his memories 8 11 14.
- Xie Liyou — Sworn elder brother, childhood companion, and his father’s adopted son. Helps him escape the clan; his torture and death leave Ji Hanchu with enduring grief 6 10 14 16.
- Ji Jingsheng — Second uncle and martial teacher, with a bond approaching that of a foster father. Ji Hanchu shields Red Adornment from his attack despite their closeness 5 9 10.
- Ji Chengxuan — Third uncle, guardian, and clan head. Favors Ji Hanchu as a successor, but their obligations ultimately divide them 6 11 15.
- Ji Zhiyuan — Older cousin, addressed as his elder brother. Becomes his enemy through the ambush, drugging scheme, and torture of Xie Liyou; Ji Hanchu ultimately spares him at Ji Chengxuan’s plea 7 11 13 15.
- Yin Qingyan — Yin Qiqi’s niece and his later supposed fiancée during his amnesia. He rejects marriage to her before losing his memories and promises to end the engagement afterward 3 6 12.
- Hongxiu — Red Adornment’s senior sister and an acquaintance of his father. Ji Hanchu asks her to entrust Red Adornment’s future to him through the Twin Gu transfer 12 15.
- Ji Qingrang and Ji Qingxi — His children with Red Adornment; accompany their parents on a later visit to Jiangnan 16.
