Background / History

Original Life

Nan Qing came from a wealthy family and entered the entertainment industry with ambitions of becoming an actor. His family had already fractured before his death: his mother moved abroad and changed her number, while his father formed a new family. He died when a billboard fell on him during an outdoor commercial shoot 8 37.

After his death, he bound himself to the Vicious Cannon Fodder Trouble-Making System and entered a novel’s world. His assigned identity was the Bai family’s pampered fake young master, whose purpose was to antagonize others and serve as a contrast to the true young master, Bai Ruanruan 1 116.

Life with the Bai Family

Nan Qing spent years following the system’s assignments, cultivating a reputation as a spoiled troublemaker. His apparent academic incompetence was also deliberate: Huo Yuzhou later recalled that he could solve difficult problems and understand English passages despite intentionally answering incorrectly, cheating, and handing in blank examination papers 1 147.

Bai Ruanruan entered the household six months before the opening events. Nan Qing had to cooperate with his provocations to preserve the plot, even when he was being wronged. Once Bai Ruanruan’s identity as the biological son was established, the family abandoned Nan Qing 1 17.

His final assignment required him to seduce Huo Yuzhou, be strangled nearly to death and thrown outside, and then die in a traffic accident. Huo Yuzhou’s attraction to him derailed that sequence. Although Nan Qing’s task completion had reached 100%, the mission did not conclude, leaving him stranded with a ruined reputation, a five-year agency contract, and only 33.8 yuan 1 8.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and slender, with long limbs, a narrow waist, and notably balanced proportions 19 57.
  • Hair: Short, flaxen-colored hair 19.
  • Eyes: Dark, glossy, rounded or almond-shaped eyes with slightly upturned outer corners and thick lashes 7 50.
  • Features: Very fair skin, a finely shaped nose, and soft red lips; his appearance is compared to an exquisitely made BJD doll 3 50.
  • Bearing: His richly beautiful features contrast with an imperious, proud manner rather than a fragile or ingratiating one 50 80.
  • Style: Usually dresses casually, but can shift convincingly between youthful, relaxed, aristocratic, and sharply formal looks for fashion work 57 80.

Personality

Nan Qing is outspoken, quick-tempered, and exceptionally sharp-tongued. He responds to insults with mockery rather than deference, including repeatedly hanging up on Zheng Ming and verbally confronting people who try to exploit his loss of status. His anger can pass quickly, however: after the failed mission leaves him destitute, he talks himself out of despair and decides to make use of his second chance at life 8 10 13.

His spoiled manner conceals a strong need for lasting affection. Abandonment in both lives makes him doubt that anyone would choose him unconditionally. During the Mount Pingqiao disaster, those fears become so severe that he questions whether his life has any meaning. Huo Yuzhou’s rescue challenges his conviction that no one cares about him 37 38 39.

He initially resists romance and repeatedly asks Huo Yuzhou to remain his friend instead. Even as their intimacy grows, he struggles to reconcile it with that label. His later jealousy, public defense of Huo Yuzhou, and explicit declarations of love mark a substantial change from this avoidance 68 74 118 129 146.

Despite his assigned villainous role, Nan Qing is protective and warmhearted. He previously helped Qi Bin escape mistreatment, warns a filming crew about dangerous weather, defends Qin Mubai against threats, and intervenes when Fan Muzhi is attacked. He also refuses the idea of pursuing someone already in a relationship, even when he dislikes their partner 9 12 36 127 142.

Abilities & Skills

Hearing Huo Yuzhou’s Thoughts

  • Hears thoughts that contrast sharply with Huo Yuzhou’s composed outward behavior 83 87.
  • Overhears Huo Yuzhou’s thought of killing Bai Ruanruan after the mountain accident 40.
  • Reports hearing only one person’s unspoken voice; the supplied events do not establish general mind-reading 20.
  • The cause of the ability is not established in the provided chapters.

  • Gaming: Carries a team match despite deliberately uncooperative teammates, dealing 61% of the team’s damage 58.
  • Physical confrontation: Can overpower Bai Ruanruan and has kicked Xu Jing’an hard enough to leave him crouching in pain. He remains unable to break Huo Yuzhou’s grip 67 127.
  • Improvised defense: Throws a thermos to knock a broken bottle away from Fan Muzhi 142.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Best Actor trophy — Huo Yuzhou gives his Huaying Awards trophy a dedicated display stand 152.

Relationships

  • Huo Yuzhou — Childhood connection, contractual partner, and eventual husband. Nan Qing initially mistakes his affection for revenge or interest in Bai Ruanruan. After being rescued and learning of Huo Yuzhou’s longstanding desire, he gradually accepts the relationship and becomes fiercely protective of him 39 44 67 129 152.
  • Qin Mubai — Older brother by upbringing, without a blood relationship. Once Nan Qing’s most trusted protector, he becomes the focus of Nan Qing’s hurt over being abandoned. Nan Qing still reacts violently to threats against him and rushes to the hospital after his accident. Qin Mubai’s feelings extend beyond brotherly affection; the side story depicts him learning to withdraw and let Nan Qing live with his chosen lover 91 127 133 153.
  • Bai Ruanruan — The Bai family’s biological son, the original story’s protagonist, and Nan Qing’s principal antagonist. He repeatedly manipulates public opinion against Nan Qing, deliberately causes his mountain fall, and later threatens Qin Mubai to demand betrayal of Huo Yuzhou 17 45 70 127.
  • Bai Yanxiu — Former second older brother. His jealousy of Qin Mubai’s favoritism contributes to his withdrawal of affection from Nan Qing. Their later contact is openly hostile, especially when he accuses Nan Qing of abducting Bai Ruanruan 103 104 109.
  • Xi Juan — Former schoolmate and persistent, rejected suitor. Nan Qing keeps firm boundaries because he knows Xi Juan as Bai Ruanruan’s intended partner in the original plot. He eventually tells him directly that he loves Huo Yuzhou 30 52 61 146.
  • Yu Xingyan — Initially an antagonistic fellow artist, later a friendly colleague who warns him about Bai Ruanruan and listens to his thinly disguised requests for relationship advice 14 70 72.
  • Gu Xingchen — Huo Yuzhou’s friend, who calls Nan Qing “sister-in-law” and supplies evidence of Huo Yuzhou’s longstanding attachment to him 47.
  • Zhou Guangliang — Career manager who promotes his prospects, arranges professional opportunities, and persistently pushes him to study 79 119 136.
  • Fan Muzhi — Co-star in Journey through Luo. Nan Qing protects him from a drunken attacker, and Fan Muzhi invites him to a meal in thanks 142.
